I bought this lens like 15 minutes after watching this video 3 months ago. Since then the only time it has left my X-E3 is when I tried it on my new X-S10 for a couple days. After that, the lens went right back onto the X-E3 where it will stay as half of my “forever camera.” The X-S10 replaced an X-T3 and it will eventually be replaced by an X-H2, but the Zeiss/X-E3 combo will never leave my possession. The images that I get from that pair are the exact images that have always been in my head since I first picked up photography back in 10th grade, if that makes sense. Wow, thank you! That really means a lot! I want to make it as visually appealing as possible since we are talking about things that make images after all :)
Agree, it's a much underappreciated lens, and just superior to the 35/1.4 overall. The reason it's forgotten is that when it came out the reviews all said the same thing: "The Fuji 35mm 1.4 is cheaper and I can't see a difference," or the more thorough ones noticed that the Fuji is sharper stopped down. So buyers went by those reviews, made the XF35 a lot (A LOT) more legendary than it truly deserved to be, and the Touit got forgotten in spite of nicer optics, better rendering, better tonality, better build, better ergonomics... I did the same. I listened to the reviews, got the XF35, used it extensively for two years, wasn't happy with the look of its results, and only got unhappier the more trained my eye became. Went back to those old reviews, looked over their comparisons, thought they were insane to not be able to see the difference. Got the Touit, compared them, confirmed what I'd seen in other comparisons, and have hardly used the Fuji again in the more than five years since. The Touit really only has two major weaknesses, aside from being priced a little higher than its performance can probably justify: 1) Its stopped down resolution at infinity is noticeably weak compared to the cheaper Fuji competitor, making it a poor choice for landscape work, and 2) Reliability issues, in the form of electronics quirks and lack of firmware updates. My copy has an aperture ring issue that causes it to intermittently slip in and out of auto when set wide open, and I've heard of autofocus issues on some copies. It also has the minor weakness of having its rendering flattened a bit by the slight distortion correction that's applied automatically. If you edit the raw with something that can disable the automatic correction, you get back a little of the Zeiss depth. But even its corrected jpegs look less flat than what the original XF35 produces. So I still use my dodgy and annoying Touit instead of the XF35 because one gives me acceptable results and the other does not. That said, I understand some do prefer the look of the XF35, and that's valid too; it's a character lens with a ton of intentionally uncorrected spherical aberration to make it glow wide open, as well as a lens that becomes very resolving when stopped down, and the Touit simply isn't either of those things.
Bro... just wanted to say thank you for making these videos and putting so much effort into making them pop and stand out while bringing some really really valid knowledge that could help shooters evolve their practice...needs to be said.. grateful
Hi there. Have just bought this lens for my X-pro 2 off the back of this video. Thanks so much for the excellent review. Very unique and insightful. Can’t wait to see what it’s capable of.
Awesome vid GX, great music used as always. I've seen this lens pop up in a few of your other vids and have had an eye out for a used one ever since, I might have to get two eyes on the job after seeing this. Keep the amazing content coming but don't forget to get out there and keep taking awesome shots ;)
Sold! I was debating between the Fuji 35mm and this one, and your review has helped me make up my mind. UPDATE: Ended up getting the lens and absolutely agree with you. The color is just amazing, I don't get the same results with any of the Fuji lenses, despite those being excellent too.
I own this lens and have used it on the Fuji X-H1 with mixed results, I've missed focus on this lens more than any other lens on the Fuji X-H1, have tried it with image stabilisation on as well as off but its odd and has given mixed results, don't get me wrong Ive had some great shots when its been mounted on the early X-pro1 camera and its strangely awesome, I also own the fuji 35mm f1.4 and I do think that's a superior lens IMHO.
Fabulous review! I have this lens for my Sony a6600 and haven't really used it bc I normally use my a7iii however, you've peaked my interest with your photos and made me realize that I'm missing out on something special.
Loved this review and overview. I bought this lens late last year when prices were higher and not many of them on eBay. I got mine for $500 on KEH. I don’t know exactly why I picked it over the Fuji options at the time, but I love it and it may be my favorite lens (and I have the 16mm f1.4). There aren’t a lot of reviews for this but there were enough to help me make an informed decision on buying it. Hopefully you making one will give this lens more exposure. I think another reason why nobody talks about it is because it’s old and came out early on during the X-Mount’s life (2013) and Zeiss has basically stopped supporting and marketing it. I bought mine before the Viltrox 33mm f1.4 was available/became a hot topic, but that’s another option at around this ~35mm focal length under $300 brand new. I could have realistically bought that if it was available when I was shopping. Would appreciate a third party showdown between that and the Zeiss 32mm! I’d imagine the Zeiss would be “better” overall and more fun to use, but the extra stop and much lower price brand new make the Viltrox a pretty compelling option.
@@WasatchBDCdid you ever pick one up? It’s still a daily driver for me to this day but I never saw it for the price he shared in this video ever, hah. It would be a steal at anything below $500.
WOW! How are you not at 200K+ subs?! Really loved the style of this video, its the first one of yours I've seen and I really enjoyed it! Subbing immediately
I've watched your 35 1.4 video and this one 3-4 times over. Back again to ask, if you had to choose one which would you go for? I know here you say you prefer some of the characteristics of the Zeiss, but your reverence for the 35 is palpable. I've only used the latter.
From the Rolleiflex TLR, to the Hasselblad 500’s, Rollei’s delve into 35mm Film with Carl Zeiss(My Favorite Lens Planar 1.4/50 Made In Germany at the Voigtländer Factory-all metal and glass), The Cosina Made Zeiss modern lens for Nikon and Canon, this Len’s Pedigree inspired the entire industry to copy it’s formula for normal lenses. But there’s just something about the lenses character, an X-factor that makes Primary Colors jump out, and the incredible micro-contrast, the silky smooth transition from focus to out of focus areas(or even fully in focus photographs), that just feel one step away from reality into a dream-world, one slight click away from this dimension. I wish I had better descriptive adjectives to wax poetic about the Planar. And, having nothing to do with it’s performance, I love looking into the vintage Planar’s Purplish-Golden HFT Coatings that the modern T lacks- but not in photographic results! I can’t say enough great things about Carl Zeiss Lenses. Yeah, they are expensive, but I’ve only seen rare subtle cases where one can’t enjoy the lens for a year or decade, and get their money right back on a sale- or get more in the case of some vintage cameras, and that makes them super cheap if taken care of.
Great video. Have you tried using the lens in manual focus? I'm after a 35mm on my Fuji X Pro 2, but shoot manual focus lenses on the fuji. I know this is focus-by-wire, but is the experience at least better then the fuji lenses, which just spin without any user tactile feedback.
I cannot say enough good things about your videos. I absolutely love and am inspired by both your reviews and photos. I would also love to see future vids on some of your thoughts regarding shooting and editing technique 🙏🏼
I have the Zeiss on my X-T2, and it's definitely better than the Pentax nifty 50s, Pentax 35s, and Sigma zoom I'd been using prior to purchasing the Zeiss. I think Zeiss started at $900, then dropped to $720 MSRP when there was not much interest. Another thing is that the Zeiss was introduced before Fuji's X system got to be so popular, so maybe that's why it slipped thru the cracks. Anyway, you're correct about $400 clams being a good deal. Grab one up at that price if you can.
Thanks for the nice lens presentation. You remind me of "three blind man and an elephant", you also more focused on the shooting and feeling of the hobby and not spec sheets. Allways nice for me to find someone who present me this view point. Its just a bummer that Sony seems to don't care for their APS-C lineup anymore. I may switch to fullframe because of that ...
I had and loved so much the Fuji 35mm f1.4, after that lens and the X-E1 was "confiscated" I was considering this Zeiss but I read (and I could be misremembering) it is not optically corrected as the Fuji, but relies in software. I love my Carl Zeiss lenses, but I don't like software geometry corrections, to my eyes they take what looks, even if distorted, natural for something flatly correct.
I have xpro3 and zeiss 32mm combo and I'm very happy. My main lens is zeiss 32mm, rest of my lenses fuji 16mm f1.4 and fuji 56mm. If I want narrow dof, I use 56mm ;) When I want wider than 32mm, I use 16mm. I tried some other x mount lenses, but I keep these 3.
Yes i am a zeiss addict. In film contax with zeiss now fuji pro-2 with zeiss. De resultaten are ready different all the time. Even the fuji 56mm f 1.2 a great lens, i pick up the zeiss tuit 32 special atmosfeer i am addict to. I was in Jena and Oberkochen to the factories and have soms old planar sampels. After doing some research on this lens, reviews absolutely hammered it. Seems popular in Japan. But noise and lack of confidence autofocus, distortion and vignetting and a busy bokeh
seems like you updated your talking-head setup. looks good! Also, that drone opening shot at the beginning of the video, did you shoot that yourself while in China or did you find it on a stock-footage site? Oh and do you use your own kind of LUT preset for your videos? looking good
My favourite lens/camera combo is the full-frame Sigma 50mm Art adapted to my Fujifilm X-T1. Beautiful and wonderful combination of sharpness and softness.
Why no one is talking about the Planar is the quality of the Fuji. Not everyone favours the character of the Planar over that of the Fujinon. It's a matter of taste and to me their differences in character are a good reason to own both. You simply can't have to many normal lenses. They are very useful and there are next to no bad ones among them.
Absolutely! Lenses are subjective and each offer different characteristics. I personally own this and the fuji 1.4 and like them for different reasons :)
@@GxAce And to add that: You need experience to appreciate their differences and several different to learn about them. For most their first normal lens is just good enough and there the story ends.

The Touit really only has two major weaknesses, aside from being priced a little higher than its performance can probably justify:
1) Its stopped down resolution at infinity is noticeably weak compared to the cheaper Fuji competitor, making it a poor choice for landscape work,
and 2) Reliability issues, in the form of electronics quirks and lack of firmware updates.
First time ever I listen to a photography geek that takes great pictures. Very very nice images
Glad you're doing weekly videos! Congrats GX!
Hopefully I can sustain this frequency haha. Thanks for watching!
incredibly unique review style! absolutely loved the video great work and fantastic images!
Thanks a ton!
still using this amazing planar lens combo with my XPRO2+touit32mm amazing results.. more power!!
There is no need for your videos to look this good. Great work!!!!
Breathtaking :D What a pleasure to watch your review.
Awesome vid GX, great music used as always. I've seen this lens pop up in a few of your other vids and have had an eye out for a used one ever since, I might have to get two eyes on the job after seeing this.
Keep the amazing content coming but don't forget to get out there and keep taking awesome shots ;)
I have just helped myself to one of your Lightroom packs, they are an awesome tool and for a great price, cheers
Thank you so much for the support! It really means a lot! I hope you continue to enjoy them!
Your videos are truly masterpieces, thanks for inspiring to take my cameras out and shoot more!!
Sold! I was debating between the Fuji 35mm and this one, and your review has helped me make up my mind. UPDATE: Ended up getting the lens and absolutely agree with you. The color is just amazing, I don't get the same results with any of the Fuji lenses, despite those being excellent too.
I got the same lens over Fuji. Somehow Fuji lens looks are not for me.
The composition and overall mood of your photography is... /chef's kiss/ - Cheers!
If it makes you feel any better, I'm not seeing them anywhere online for much under $500 today...
I found it second hand for half the price. It's a nice lens from what I've seen from your video. Thanks for video.
4:33 wow, this is like a scene from Ghost In The Shell with all the wires connecting to the helmet.
I know! I almost didn't take that photo because I was too nervous and had to talk myself into going back to get it since it was too good.
Coming back here for the 10th time and it still delivers more cinema than Netflix.
The production quality on this video is wild.
Hahah thanks!
I've watched your 35 1.4 video and this one 3-4 times over. Back again to ask, if you had to choose one which would you go for? I know here you say you prefer some of the characteristics of the Zeiss, but your reverence for the 35 is palpable. I've only used the latter.
I’m unfortunately in the same dilemma as I have both of them still haha. I prefer the bokeh on the Zeiss and prefer the speed of the 1.4
@@GxAce well I will let the invisible hand of the used market guide me to delivery, then.
At this point, you gotta start shooting on the worst lenses imaginable to keep it fair for the rest of us. Your images are perfect.
Hahah, not sure about that, but I'll take the compliment :)
Love the editing of your videos. Keep up the good work 👍
Thanks a ton!
Wow this is great.
I'm curious have you tried the 40mm Batis for Sony?
incredible review as always! I do need to look into that lens, seems like a beast for a good price used
It really is! Thanks!
Had it on my Fuji. Was really expensive when new. Maybe my biggest gear purchase. Awesome IQ und rendering qualities.
Another work-of-art short film 'review'. Absolutely stunning cinematography. 👏
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks so much for the support, Max.
I cannot say enough good things about your videos. I absolutely love and am inspired by both your reviews and photos. I would also love to see future vids on some of your thoughts regarding shooting and editing technique 🙏🏼
Thank you so much! That will definitely be coming in the future!
THE LAST THING I NEED IS ANOTHER LENS CASEY!
I'M SO SORRY SPENSER. GIVE MY CONDOLENCES TO YOUR WALLET PLZ
I’m shooting the Touit Planar and Distagon on a Sony NEX 7 and 5N.
AF Zeiss for this price is unreal.
I turn off all software correction on my Fuji cameras
The best review which I watched in whole life
Your editing and music choice is ❤️👌❤️
Glad you think so!
Thanks for sharing! Sounds like a great setup!
I had and adored the loxia 50mm on sony and am beginning to wonder if this is the closest equivalent to that (also planar) lens on x-mount
I would say so!
I would absolutely love it if Zeiss came out with a Fuji mounted Loxia line.
woop! you uploaded just in time cause i really need inspirations right now! 😂
Hope you enjoy!
Amazing content as always Gx 👏🏼🔥🤟
Quick question. If you could only keep one, would you pick the Zeiss 32 1.8 or the Fuji 35 1.4?
Yes i am a zeiss addict. In film contax with zeiss now fuji pro-2 with zeiss. De resultaten are ready different all the time. Even the fuji 56mm f 1.2 a great lens, i pick up the zeiss tuit 32 special atmosfeer i am addict to. I was in Jena and Oberkochen to the factories and have soms old planar sampels.
Thanks for your great zeiss vision. I degree so nice atmosfeer!
Btw sorry for my Englisch gang greetings from the Netherlands
My favorite channel on UA-cam. Would still watch even if I didnt shoot Fuji.
Wow its an honor! Thanks so much!
love it when a new video drops
Me too! If only I did it more often hahah
The shot with the rotating X-T3 at the beginning looks fantastic. Almost like it's a render.
Also you make me wanna buy lenses for my Fuji, i thought i could keep that as my small, carry everywhere camera with the 18-55 haha.
Thanks so much! Whoops! hahaha
Hey gX do you have any idea why the price on these lenses has sky rocketed? They were affordable for a while but on the used market in the UK they're very hard to find.
im addicted to your videos
Hahah, I'll try to make them quicker ;P
Why is no one talking about YOU?! im planning to buy this lens so i searched it up and your video came on top:) in the previews it seemed like you cut some movie scenes from the matrix (thats what i thought) but wow, from the beginning to end it was truly an amazing experience. thank you for making this beautiful video. im subscribed and going to binge watch all your contents :D cheers
After doing some research on this lens, reviews absolutely hammered it. Seems popular in Japan. But noise and lack of confidence autofocus, distortion and vignetting and a busy bokeh
Please post narrative content if you have any! The production style and quality of your videos are so good!
I have one narrative short film on my channel actually! But I plan on doing more for sure. Thanks so much!!
THANK YOU I‘ve searched so long for a fuji 35mm!!! Exact the bokeh and Charakter I am looking for!
Awesome! Glad I could help!
Hey 👋🏼 bought the Zeiss used and noticed that the autofocus is quite load. Can you confirm that or is my Focus maybe damaged?!
It’s definitely not silent but quieter than the fuji 35 1.4
@@GxAce okay will Check Tomorrow the other Lenses as well But bought the xpro 1 and Zeiss due to your review 🙏🏼
Your reviews are such a fun visual and audio treat to savour.
They inspire me to do better on my main channel.
Awesome! I'm glad I can help inspire you a bit! Thanks for watching and the comment!
seems like you updated your talking-head setup. looks good! Also, that drone opening shot at the beginning of the video, did you shoot that yourself while in China or did you find it on a stock-footage site? Oh and do you use your own kind of LUT preset for your videos? looking good
Thanks! That is from China and shot on my Mavic Air :)
