Assault Horizon is a fine game standing on it's own. I played most of the previous games and I had a lot of fun with AH regardless. I prefer strangereal, but other than that it's still a game in the spirit of the series with it's highly cinematic and story-driven nature.
What I tell most people is that AH would've been great as a standalone game. But the fact that they slapped on the Ace Combat title immediately made it vulnerable to comparison to previous AC titles, all of which have completely different gameplay concepts comparatively.
This is what I imagined when I played the After Burner II arcade machine as a kid. It was so satisfying to relive that fantasy again as an adult, and it's still badass!
I love having this on loop while I do household chores. Something about the combination of music, controlled chaos, and the sound of characters who are professionals in their element helps me focus. Thanks for the upload!

This game is a good game. And the music is top notch. The only big mistake was that they called it "Ace Combat." If the game was called something else, it would have gotten more love from the fans.
I am a dogfighter fan, sir. I couldn't stop playing it! I woke up early every day so I could play the mission Siege before work cause it was so FUCKING awesome. Thats when things got bad. While driving to work I started to see a green ring around every car in front of me. 15 people died that day. Before I knew it, I had a sharks mouth painted on my Honda. I shot an old Russian man because I was angry about my dead wife I imagined. Who the hell took that picture of me in Bosnia then!?

Actually I must thank you for the opportunity to explain the greatness of the jet mission in BF3! It's so realistic! They use real life maneuvers such as saying "I'm defending!" then flying in a straight line. It's brilliant, they'd never expect it. You also have to appreciate that the WSO has control of the M61 cannon. I mean, the pilot just can't do everything! Evading by flying in a straight line requires skill. I was also impressed how flares cause missiles to do complete U-turns.
I was making a joke about Solo Wing explaining there are 3 kinds of aces. But yes, Ace combat games are probably the series I love the most. No matter how an upcoming game looks I never miss out on it. I didn't expect much from Ace Combat 3D Cross Rumble, but I liked it. It was a really good remake of 2. I hope the come out with on for PS Vita soon, still playin X2 on that.
I have a question for anyone who's ever flown single seat or small jet, like a trainer. How the experience compares to an older prop driven plane. I know theres a big difference between cruising at 120mph an near 500mph. The smallest jet I've gone up in is a Learjet, an the controls can be stubborn. I like older planes, when I was down in Florida we knew someone with an old Waco biplane and taking it up with the prop draft an wind an no canopy was the most fun I've ever had. Hows it compare?
Not gonna lie, I actually enjoyed the dogfight mode. It's adds a new level of cinematic storytelling to the game. It can get repetitive, however, when used extensively just like in the final battle.
I can't agree more. If you wanna have fun with aircraft, play Ace Combat, or IL-2 Birds of Prey if you prefer WW2 planes. The worst part is a lot of it is due to laziness or people thinking a flight sim is "just as real". Figure the cost of 2 sims $50 each, if someone really wants to fly, save that $100 and go on a discovery flight. They take you up in a Cessna an let you fly, an it also helps you get into flight school and at a more affordable price. Then rent a Cessna an have fun really flying
you can can switch views while playing... The cockpit view in this game is awesome. All the displays and instruments function arccordingly, and even the mirrors in the cockpit work
The height of badassery is when you're locked on an Bishop says "I have you now". It's like a Vader who doesn't get hit by a fighter that richochets off the wall of a trench. That only happens to Captain Hamilton in AC5. So many Star Wars references, like being chased thru a tunnel in AC5 an Bartlett dives in. Or flying thru the trench to destroy the cooling duct of the Chandelier in AC6, or in AC4 when all the Mobius planes say "Standing by" before a daring assault on a massive weapon.
Thats actually the best way I've heard it described. And to thank you for enlightening me not only have I heard a Vulcan tell me that my idea was not logical. But I'll also throw in a fact about another piece of military hardware that makes an odd sound. Ever heard an AH-1Z Super Cobra? The engine sounds like a growling animal.
I disagree with most Ace Combat fans, this game was actually fun to play. Don't let your "fanboyism" get in the way of quality entertainment. I mean, the story sucks but the gameplay is fun to master.
I've played Ace Combat since 1996 and I've played nearly every game. Admittedly Assault Horizon does have its bright spots. The plane damage is awesome, and it's great getting to see the destruction you wreak up close instead of just seeing a tiny explosion from far away. Some of the missions are very memorable too, like Naval Warfare. Plus I do like getting to fly other aircraft like bombers and helicopters. However, what is great about older Ace Combat games (and the newest one, Infinity) is the freedom. Some missions are linear, but in most of them you're free to use any plane you want, attack the targets in any order you want, and attack however you want. And the dogfights have a lot more strategy to them than just getting behind them and activating a quick time event. You have to actually observe what your opponent is doing and adapt. One on five dogfights against ace squadrons require lots of skill and are quite tense. In this game however, I feel like I'm playing Call of Duty: Ace Combat. The missions are way too scripted and they rely too much on spectacle and explosions instead of gameplay. I don't feel like I'm playing the game or accomplishing anything. I feel like I'm just watching a movie. You can't even shoot down certain targets until the game lets you do it. Until then, you can shoot missile after missile into somebody like Markov and it does absolutely nothing. I was shocked when I actually started getting bored midway through missions. That has never happened to me before in other Ace Combat games. That should be a very telling sign of Assault Horizon's quality. It's not really a "bad" game and it can be fun to play, but it doesn't measure up to what's come before it (and now after it, with Ace Combat Infinity).
As a standalone game, it was actually pretty decent. The reason why it's held in such low regard is because it carries the Ace Combat title which holds significant weight (especially since most of the older fan's initial entries into the series were 04, 5, or Zero).

Thats how a vulcan cannon sounds. It's rate of fire is so high that the individual gunshots are in such quick succession, the sound of each shot sort of meshes together resulting in a humming/growling noise.
Agreed 100%. I'm addicted to air combat so I bought it, honestly I think its a great experience. I say experience and not game because about half of it is cutscenes, quicktime events, and scripted chase sequences. It does look and sound nice. But it should just be called Assault Horizon. When I think of Ace Combat I don't think about "standard NATO policy", I think about "A Yellow is hit and trailing smoke!" or "8492nd! Is that all you have to say?" An of course, "Yo buddy, still alive?"

That pretty much sums it up. When you're struggling to get out of that scripted path while slamming over 6 missiles into the enemy......well......it's like you're up against Razgriz itself out there. And lets not forget that it can saw some armored vehicles clean in half. My father's airforce buddy said in the Gulf War they'd make one pass over enemy armor and when they doubled back for the gun run, half the time they'd actually see the guys climbing outta the tanks an running like hell. I actually got a chance a while back to sit in an A-10 and all I could think of was "I have to get pictures!" and "I'm sitting a few feet away from the seven-barreled wrath of God"
This is definitely something new and different from previous Ace Combat series. Not sure how I feel about the "Dog Fight" mode which looks like it is set on a rail or pre-fixed bath but damn you gotta love that metal carnage. The chance to pilot Choppers and Bombers is one heck of a PLUS. Good idea NAMCO. Assault Horizon is a very welcomed fresh look compared to the last AC project "Fires of Liberation". God that story was so awful and cheesy I almost puked.
Quick question, I never noticed this until now, but AWACS says, " Bandits approaching from the south." But then enemy TGT show up coming from the north on the compas???

I suggest you buy this... since you are new to the franchise, but as a hardcore ace combat fan I truly suggest try some of the old stuff. highly recommended "Ace combat 5 : The unsung war" but its back in the PS2 era tho.

Seriously, God bless Namco and Project Aces for this awesomness. In a perfect world they would have directed Avatar. Fat fuckin Base Commander Orson Perrault could be the villain. There'd be an aerial battle between Akula and the Na'Vi dragon things and they could tear apart just like the planes do in the game. They could have Captain Sulejnavi whine about being a child soldier and cheat during a dogfight. Even Red 6 could make an appearance to get shot down again! I'd see that!
I think you missed my note about magic savior arrows and how flying slow and straight ( I meant low at the time and was referring to MP) For some reason if you got low whoever was on you would almost instantly dig a grave.

I just noticed, the way the planes rip apart and pretty much bleed oil (which is in my opinion the most epic destruction physics I've seen in a game. Fuck.....I could watch it for hours. I'd visit Miami with the family just to watch the "Air Show" then have the kids take pictures with Markov like its Disneyland) anyway, with the way the planes get shredded and spray the machine equivalent to blood, doesn't that technically make this the "goriest" flying game?
One other thing. This game actually is more fun than BF3. It's fast, looks nice, the explosions are awesome, and the voice talent and music is good. And despite it being pretty unrealistic, it does pay attention to a good deal of detail, even if they skipped out on stuff like pre-flight weapons and avionics checks, but does that add anything? No. I'll admit there decent detail put into some of BF3, but its not as epic, an thats why we play Ace Combat rather than enlisting, its damn fun.
If the gameplay was similar to traditional AC games honestly ACAH would be great. I just don’t know what the hell they were thinking with DFM. If it had been a little less headache inducing and less on rails it could’ve been a cool feature.
Indeed, it has great graphics and visual effects but there's were the greatness ends (or at least for me), about the quotes, in AC5 I prefer "Thunderhead this is Razgris 3 roger that" and in AC6 is the famous "Let's do this Garuda 1" BUT the most famous one has to be Solo Wing Pixie
All sarcasm aside, and believe me it is a riot talking about BF3's jet mission. Even tho Ace Combat isn't realistic, they made it that way on purpose. An at least the pilots act like pilots. I really have no idea why in BF3 the "MiGs" do random barrel rolls and continually waste flares for no reason. An I just can't let it go that they call the Su-35s MiGs. Yeah, the jets weren't MiGs in Top Gun but that was during the 80s so Russia wouldn't lend us any MiGs. Anyway AC3,4,5,Z,6,X,X2, all awesome
I thought the online play was pretty decent, I never really go into an Ace Combat game thinking about multiplayer, but yeah it was surprisingly fun. I'm still confused as to why people choose helicopters though. I know they surve a purpose since they can shoot down missiles an bombs an ambush enemies by hiding around buildings, but I always see them getting shot down literally like 5 or 6 within 10 seconds. I'm not gonna complain about whats pretty much a free kill though.
It's more of an experience than a game. It does a bit too much for you and feels too scripted. But the graphics are beautiful, the story is well told thanks to great voice talent, believable characters who are enjoyable to watch, and the villain is actually pretty well developed. He's got flaws, emotion, and a decent reason for why he does what he does, not to spoil anything. The soundtrack is also top notch. But it's not REALLY a true Ace Combat game. It's a great game, just not in the same way
It's auto piloted. It takes some getting used to. It kinda takes some of the skill away but the payoff is that it allows them to pull of epic chase scenes. I like to call it more of an experience than a game, although it's one of my favorites. The best way I can describe it is like Metal Gear Solid 4. It tells a good story with good visuals and sound, and you do get to play a lot, but the game will eventually take you exactly where it wants to take you. It'd make a good movie, kinda already is.
I'd rather be trapped in a crippled jet with a jammed canopy and broken ejection seat, slowly falling towards my death in the middle of a stadium. Theres more damn key commands than there are buttons in a real F-16. The only sim I play is IL-2 because I love the ol' 109. I'm honestly surprised tho that people thought "Ace Combat, this ones gonna be just like real life!" It's fun cause its over the top, an at the same time, sometimes the game can really make you feel like ur in an epic battle.

Seriously, God bless Namco and Project Aces for this awesomness. In a perfect world they would have directed Avatar. Fat fuckin Base Commander Orson Perrault could be the villain. There'd be an aerial battle between Akula and the Na'Vi dragon things and they could tear apart just like the planes do in the game. They could have Captain Sulejnavi whine about being a child soldier and cheat during a dogfight. Even Red 6 could make an appearance to get shot down again! I'd see that!
I think you missed my note about magic savior arrows and how flying slow and straight ( I meant low at the time and was referring to MP) For some reason if you got low whoever was on you would almost instantly dig a grave.

I played every ace combat up until 5. I'm finding it hard to enjoy them anymore. 5 was SO great. I feel like no other will compare.

I just noticed, the way the planes rip apart and pretty much bleed oil (which is in my opinion the most epic destruction physics I've seen in a game. Fuck.....I could watch it for hours. I'd visit Miami with the family just to watch the "Air Show" then have the kids take pictures with Markov like its Disneyland) anyway, with the way the planes get shredded and spray the machine equivalent to blood, doesn't that technically make this the "goriest" flying game?

One other thing. This game actually is more fun than BF3. It's fast, looks nice, the explosions are awesome, and the voice talent and music is good. And despite it being pretty unrealistic, it does pay attention to a good deal of detail, even if they skipped out on stuff like pre-flight weapons and avionics checks, but does that add anything? No. I'll admit there decent detail put into some of BF3, but its not as epic, an thats why we play Ace Combat rather than enlisting, its damn fun.

Indeed, it has great graphics and visual effects but there's were the greatness ends (or at least for me), about the quotes, in AC5 I prefer "Thunderhead this is Razgris 3 roger that" and in AC6 is the famous "Let's do this Garuda 1" BUT the most famous one has to be Solo Wing Pixie

All sarcasm aside, and believe me it is a riot talking about BF3's jet mission. Even tho Ace Combat isn't realistic, they made it that way on purpose. An at least the pilots act like pilots. I really have no idea why in BF3 the "MiGs" do random barrel rolls and continually waste flares for no reason. An I just can't let it go that they call the Su-35s MiGs. Yeah, the jets weren't MiGs in Top Gun but that was during the 80s so Russia wouldn't lend us any MiGs. Anyway AC3,4,5,Z,6,X,X2, all awesome

I thought the online play was pretty decent, I never really go into an Ace Combat game thinking about multiplayer, but yeah it was surprisingly fun. I'm still confused as to why people choose helicopters though. I know they surve a purpose since they can shoot down missiles an bombs an ambush enemies by hiding around buildings, but I always see them getting shot down literally like 5 or 6 within 10 seconds. I'm not gonna complain about whats pretty much a free kill though.

It's more of an experience than a game. It does a bit too much for you and feels too scripted. But the graphics are beautiful, the story is well told thanks to great voice talent, believable characters who are enjoyable to watch, and the villain is actually pretty well developed. He's got flaws, emotion, and a decent reason for why he does what he does, not to spoil anything. The soundtrack is also top notch. But it's not REALLY a true Ace Combat game. It's a great game, just not in the same way
It's auto piloted. It takes some getting used to. It kinda takes some of the skill away but the payoff is that it allows them to pull of epic chase scenes. I like to call it more of an experience than a game, although it's one of my favorites. The best way I can describe it is like Metal Gear Solid 4. It tells a good story with good visuals and sound, and you do get to play a lot, but the game will eventually take you exactly where it wants to take you. It'd make a good movie, kinda already is.

I'd rather be trapped in a crippled jet with a jammed canopy and broken ejection seat, slowly falling towards my death in the middle of a stadium. Theres more damn key commands than there are buttons in a real F-16. The only sim I play is IL-2 because I love the ol' 109. I'm honestly surprised tho that people thought "Ace Combat, this ones gonna be just like real life!" It's fun cause its over the top, an at the same time, sometimes the game can really make you feel like ur in an epic battle.
The only ACE COMBAT GAMES that i played it is ACE COMBAT 5 and ACE COMBAT ZERO AND ACE COMBAT X and ACE COMBAT x2 and
