- How To Relocate The Battery In Your 240SX Coupe To The Trunk
I show you guys step by step how to move the battery from the front of the car to the trunk in a clear video. My car has an intercooler pipe going through the battery try and the last owner put in a tiny motorcycle battery that kept dying. Instead of spending another $150 on a tiny battery, I relocated the battery from the engine bay to the passenger side of the trunk. (Ingenious battery hack)!
Supplies:
Battery
Battery tray
Tie downs
Approximately 20’ of 0 gauge or 4 gauge wire
2-3’ of wire for a ground
Cable ends
Power splitter
250A fuse
Misc bolts

Top 5 Reasons To LS Swap On A Budget. Yes - I'm LS swapping my Mercedes. It’s such a bad idea, no one has done it before!

3.5 years later and this video is super-useful. Thanks!
Followed this step by step, worked flawlessly
Excellent video!! I'm doing a battery relocation on my 240 convertible, your video is a huge help, thank you!!
Thank you! I tried to make it as clear as possible. Please share!
Purchased those items last week (took about a week to get from the US to the UK and was not expensive!) and will install this week end along with a battery cut off switch. Thanks for the video, really neat install!
Gabriel Nicolau Hope it helped!
It really did! The video was thorough and helpful!.
PS - the wooden Nardi looks great on the car!
Appreciate the support Gabriel! I try to make all my 'how to' videos super clear.

Gabriel Nicolau Looking good my friend!
Very informative video as a reference, sometimes later down the road I want to do a battery relocation on my G37. I will still do my due diligence to make sure everything is right and maybe learn a couple things along the way.
awesome man!! i picked up all of the products that you suggested it was a little difficult to follow good write ups so im glad i came into this video!
Andrew Maisonet Glad It was helpful!
Look out for chafing from where your wire pass behind the seat against the frame. You could long split e some hose there or some Teflon stripping. Good video.
You have earned my subscription good sir! Deserve wayyyy more views; great job! :)
Thank you sir! I just posted a brake swap tutorial as well.
Nice video. You never fail to impress me with the quality. Its a shame you are not getting 500k views.
Appreciate that! This video is from at least a year ago =)
A year ago, I didn't really know what an s13 was other than seeing the rare one pass by, Initial D and a few movies/games. There was not a big import scene where I live. I had sold my last project car about 10 years ago. At the time, I was very into American muscle cars, but family comes first and toys like this are expensive. I bought my 240sx in July 2018 after watching it sit on craigslist for 3 months (love at first sight). This is my first fuel injected/turbo project too. I'm finding answers to all my questions thanks to videos like yours.
fuzzorama Welcome to the world of cool old Nissans! It’s pretty awesome. I need to drive my car more. Thanks again for the compliment!
Any one doing this make sure you get a grounding kit so you can have grounds from Engine to chassis other than that great video !!
Grease squirrel You can never have enough grounds! I agree. My car already has this but I should have pointed it out. It’s been working perfectly since I did this.
Great video, exactly what I am looking for. Thanks for making it.
Ned Rennolds Glad you found it useful!
great video, very informative and very proffessional. thank you
Glad you found it useful! I'll be doing future how to videos as well. Next one up is probably the brake upgrade.
I really like this video, good quality and straight to the point. Now i saw in comments someone asked if you can put a kill switch instead of the 250a fuse. Isn’t better if you add the kill switch along with the fuse?
You can definitely add a kill switch as well for added safety.
Where did you run the ground to the engine block, (Fellow sr20det owner here)
I like your style. Enjoyed watching 👍🏼
Glad you enjoyed it!
Where did you get that Nardi steering wheel?! Beautiful set up! Oh and great video of course👍🏼
The steering wheel was purchased online... and thank you!
i still dont understand why you used that distribution block for the starter wire when you could have ran 1 continuous piece from the starter to battery. i did distribution block my accessory wires and add to my positive terminal though.
Nice work man :) such a good mod
So necessary.
+Michael Ronin I had to do it. Better weight distribution as well.
For sure man, I love how BMW's have that standard. Actually when I had my R33 skyline the battery was in the boot of that aswell. So much more room in the bay and makes things especially easier if you plan to
install amps in the boot/trunk also for a sound system :)
At 7:20 you snip those “custom wires” and connect them to the power distributor, what were those wires? I have a similar looking relay setup on my sr20
its a fusable link, You shouldnt cut them out but try and incorporate them into your new wiring.
What do we do with the factory ground cable?
Hey! Why'd you get rid of the clip that gives power to the fusebox instead of adjusting the other side of it to connect to the power splitter you're hooking up? Isn't having that clip there like a failsafe, or like, a point where you can disconnect it without too much of an extra hassle?
Great work!
+Jim Morrison Thanks Jim!
nice video, sounds like you need new drive belts or the tensioner needs to be tightened up
Oh definitely. PS pump belt is squealing a like a mofo. I'm gonna tighten that up.
Why not tie positives together with fuse? Thanks
i see your going to get z32 brakes are you also going to change the brake master cylinder? Are you also just going to get z32 brakes in front or also rear too? Keep up the good vids.
I'm going to upgade the master cylinder and brake booster as well to Z32. I plan on doing front and rear brakes. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the video!
I follow the previous owner of the coupe and love it. Will you ever do a wire tuck? I see the fuse box is still in the engine bay.
+xXIBON3ZIXx Full wire tuck is not a priority for me right now. It's a huge amount of work to move the fuse box. Next up is a decent seat! Cody (previous owner) is WAY taller than me so I can't really drive it yet because I can barely reach the pedals LOL.
Do you have to ground the engine to the chassis?
Yes you should do that.
did you do this before starting the car?
Did the boot install to my car but cant get it to fire or even power to most of the car, I brought a multimeter to test the resistance to make sure my boot ground was good but cant even get a reading - which means it has no continuity. - Ill make a new engine to chassis ground and see what happens
zachary webb You definitely want to make sure you have good grounds engine to chassis and also in the boot.
I would like to see evo 8 rear calipers in stalled on the rear of an 240sx s14
My plan is to install Z32 rear calipers pretty soon. I should be able to get to it next month. They will have better front rear bias than Evo 8 calipers. I have a video on installing Cadillac CTS-V calipers on the front. ua-cam.com/video/gH20d_pfz6s/v-deo.html
Evo callipers are straight forward, you just need a mounting kit (spacer for the calliper) and the correct disc size. I am using 324mm 350Z discs with the Skyline 4-pot callipers and got a full z32 rear brake set up on my S14 (BM57, z32 booster and R33 hand brake cables). If you need a help, drop me a message dude.
Great video even on today, but may I ask that necessary to consider the battery poison gas leakage problem? thanks buddy.
My car had so much air going through it I never considered it a problem!
You never tell us what you did with old positive cable like where does that go and where does new one go all into block?
Steveo Behar The old positive cable goes into the power distribution block. It's at 11:40 in the video. You can also throw it away and just have the new positive cable go directly to the starter. I did the power distribution block to make things easy.
Hi does the fuse holder have to be the same as the fuse? 250 amp? I'm assuming it does?
The fuse holder has to be the same form factor yes. All these parts are pretty inexpensive.
Awesome vid! peter friday send me to your channel! keep up
Thank you!
Was the 250 inline fuse enough for the application?
Yes. No issues at all after more than a year.
@@revmatchtv is it safer to use a lower amp rating fuse, 100amps ?
What usually causes fire, is it wire that heats up first ?
Kash Korazon You should be ok with a 100amp fuse I think. Fire can be caused by overheating wiring, yes.
@@revmatchtv thanks.. yeah I just looked it up, stock sr alternator is rated at 85 amps. I think with 1/0 g wire, 100 amps might be ok .. maybe even 90 ?
Where did you get that distribution block??
do you know what company or part numbers are for the distribution block and fuse ? looks solid . would love to try those out aswell
Hi Eric, I put the links to those products in the description. They are quite inexpensive. Glad you enjoyed the video!
totally scrolled over them sorry bout that! thanks . by the way I just realized this car was one of the locals in my area. Glad to see it around and still together 👍
Eric Estrada Yeah I bought it from Cody!
does that 250amp fuse ever blow when cranking?
festa289 Nope. No problems at all.
Dumb question, but how did you figure out what gauge to use?
What gauge wire? 0 or 4 is typical for a battery cable.
revmatch thanks. I was guessing that. I feel kinda dumb for even asking, but thanks
That alternator belt screech
Skreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! Believe me, it's on my list!
Hi there! I’m trying to relocate my 240sx battery as well, however I’m new to electrical stuff with cars and am worried about how to make sure I have the grounds placed properly… any advice? As well as would you place the kill switch in t block? Or is that completely wrong?😅
if the ground is on the body of the car then it’s a good ground, just make sure you sand it and is the actual chassis
no idea what you mean about t block
I tried your set up and it works very well. But I keep blowing my inline fuse every start up its a 5.3 swapped. Running all the accessories on one, and the starter wire to the other side of the distribution block, should I get a bigger anl fuse or am I missing something
Sounds like your starter has a lot of pull. Try a bigger fuse maybe.
@@revmatchtv bigger than 250a? 300 snapped. I'm thinking on going 500a.. just because the LS I'm reading new more amps. I appreciate the quick response
@@philm9373 that’s a big fuse already. Not quite sure what to suggest. Talk to someone local who can help diagnose
was this a kit or did your source the parts separately?
Part of it was an overpriced kit including the mount and wires i got from Summit Racing. The fuse and distribution block I got on Amazon.
revmatch thank you good sir I've been thinking about doing this mod before I install my sr20det
I use 300amp fuses for my audio setup
What did you do with all the grounds ? Like where did I ground them and what not
Sorry I get a lot of comments and didn’t see this. I use multiple grounds in the car. Thee is one at the battery going to the trunk. There is another going to the engine block up front as well. You can always add more.
Sorry I’m confused, at 8:43 you connect negative and positive wires together into the distribution block?
Same, that really confused me
at 8:43, all wires actually are positive and same as those at 6:33.
still need the front ground, engine needs to be grounded unless you dont want your starter to work all the time (starter is grounded off the bellhousing/engine).
The engine is grounded. I should have showed that in the video.
Where/how do you ground the front engine? Just the starter to the bell housing/engine? Going to be redoing the battery relocation on mine (previous owner had a lousy shop do it) and I’ve been having issue with my car dying/ battery dying/ car not starting up right away gotta turn the headlights on and off sometimes to get it to start or turn the ignition on/off. I at least Assume it’s from the sketchy battery relocation.
really dumb question but what was the cold cranking amps of the new battery that you put in the trunk? i bought the set up that you suggested but im not sure if ill do damage seeing as how the fuse was for 250 and the battery that i have puts out 750 cold cranking amps? does it correlate at all?
The battery I used has 750 CCA. Since the battery cable is now so long compared to OEM, the fuse is there to stop the cable from becoming a giant heating element should the battery get hit in an accident or some type of other electrical malfunction.
thank you very much for the speedy response!!
What kind of drill are you using? I'm
Having a real hard time getting the 250a fuse in place
Just a corded Black and Decker drill. Get a higher quality bit maybe?
revmatch what kind of screws did you use?
Small self tapping screws. I don't know the thread size. I got them at ACE Hardware.
revmatch I really find your videos information I'm running the same motors as you. would you be willing to do a walkthrough of how your intercooler piping setup is routed into your engine bay and the way you mounted your front mount intercooler
Great idea. When I add an oil cooler I'll pull the bumper off and I can do a walkthrough. It's huge pain to put the bumper back on so I only want to do it once.
Does anyone know what that loud screeching was when he started the car?
That's my fan belt. It has aluminum pullys and it needs to be tightened.
When do you plan to do the z32 brake swap?
I got a seat so that's coming up next. Z32 brake swap should be within a couple weeks. It's next after the seat!
revmatch sweet! Love your videos by the way. In the process of relocating the battery! Looking forward to your future videos!
I'll be doing more 240 videos pretty soon. Seat going in next week so I can start driving it.
just curious, how is the battery relocation holding up till this day?
No issues so far.
revmatch I relocated the battery but it's not holding up the charge. What could it be??
Hmm. Not sure. You could get your battery checked. You might also want to test your alternator to make sure it's putting out the voltage and current it should. My car has some kind of voltage leak and the battery will drain after a few days, but it's always been this way.
revmatch I turn on my car at least once a weak could that be it too?
Yeah If your battery is older it might not hold a charge for very long..
be careful with that battery since you in closed you battery in the cabin you want a agm battery sealed
Good point, although it will be in the trunk with the seat up.
revmatch it's the fumes that kill
The trunk is not exposed to the passenger compartment. Every BMW since the 80s has the battery in the trunk. It's a sealed battery, but honestly I don't see how this is an issue since it's not in the hatch.
some drag strips or road courses may require a kill switch and it to be enclosed. At least the strip in my town does if not in oe location.
Thanks painter. I'll be adding a kill switch. Very easy to swap to an enclosed housing if need be.
fuck o reilly brakes, go z32
Exactly. Z32 brakes from O'Reilly. Remanufactured and essentially brand new!
revmatch ohh i see
Needs to fix that belt squeal
Hahaha, yes that was the A/C unit that wasn't being used. I got rid of it and no more belt squeal!
This dude is kinda hack lol
The car was pretty janky to begin with!
Havevu had any problems with the fuseable links that u removed
No issues.
