    Whether the video you made on the Ovation was recorded 6 years ago or last week they are all full of valuable information that I cherish and use on a daily basis. ❤. As I get older my recall is not so good 😅

    Great tutorial. Clear, very well illustrated and easy to follow. I have an Imagine, but it generally looks the same.

    Ha! Thank you for this video! I have had a BL Enlighten for a long time but have never used it. It only has the regular foot and a piping foot though :(

      The only specialty foot I own is the blind hem foot. I do all the rest of my serger techniques with the standard foot. Sorry for the delayed response.

    For setting up the blind hem, are you removing thread from the upper looper before engaging the subsidiary looper? I previously had my Ovation setup for a 3-thread wide overlock and want to make sure I'm setting it up right for the blind hem. I know not to disengage the upper looper, but does it matter if it has been threaded?

    • @JSternDesigns
      @JSternDesigns  10 місяців тому

      I am not using the subsidiary looper... The only thing that changes for a blind hem vs a standard 3-thread wide is that the needle thread is threaded through the Upper Looper path (with the upper looper thread) and the tension setting is D...So the needle and upper looper have loose tension & the lower looper is snug. Hope this helps!

    You are a really good teacher so here is my question. I attempted to do a 4 thread overlock on a really thin slippery material and it was kind of loopy over the edge.........???? the stitch was fine - just not snug against the edge. I did that on my Imagine, but will be getting an Ovation in about 2 weeks.

    • @JSternDesigns
      @JSternDesigns  7 років тому +2

      Thank you so much. Loopy along the edge can be caused by a few things... The cutting width may not be long enough (which causes the cut edge of the fabric to not reach the ends of the looper threads). Another cause could be that the looper thread tension not tight enough. Another cause could be the differential feed setting. If you are setting it lower than the N or neutral setting, it may be stretching the edge causing it to not fill the looper thread. Let me know if any of this helps. Thanks Jen

    Fabulous video! I have watched it about 5 times in the last few days!! And I too was wondering about sewing a pant leg in the round :) I did just kind of go for it after I watched your “serging in the round” video and it worked!! Thank you! My actual question is: What am I doing wrong if the stitch is super visible. I am sewing police uniform pants and dress pants for men- and at this point - after much practice I may have to switch back to serging the edge and doing the blind hem on the sewing machine. Is there something I am missing?

      Just had another thought. Would I catch less if I pressed the fold? I pressed the hem before I started sewing, but I did not press the fold that you are barely trying to catch……

    • @JSternDesigns
      @JSternDesigns  3 роки тому

      Hi Tinychemist... Thanks for watching!! If you're stitch is too visible, that means the needle is too far over to the left (Past the folded edge)... The idea is to just catch it slightly... it gets easier to do this with practice. I do think pressing the fold will help you catch less. The only trick with that is you don't want to press a serious permanent crease... because it may not press out flat completely, making the fold and hem look more obvious. Hope this helps!

    This is so great. How would you measure how much/where to mark to ensure it’s accurately the length you need?

    • @JSternDesigns
      @JSternDesigns  2 роки тому

      So sorry I missed your comment....I generally pin the excess vertical length up at the knee so I can see how the hem hangs without the cuffed up fabric in the way. Subtract the amount of the hem allowance from the amount you pinned up. Then Mark that amount you pinned up at CF, Side Seam, CB and Inseam along the bottom edge of the pants. Thanks for watching.

    Hi, you mentioned adjusting the differential feed when hemming knits? How? Increase, decrease?

    • @JSternDesigns
      @JSternDesigns  6 років тому

      Hi Susan, Adjusting differential feed for knits depends on how much stretch the knit has. Differential feed compensates for the "stretch out" factor. Try a scrap starting on the lowest setting. (usually 1.3 or so). ... This setting will start to feed the fabric in faster than the feed dogs are letting it out. If the fabric is still stretching, increase the differential feed setting until you get a nice flat seam. Let me know if this makes sense. Thanks for watching, Jen

      Is there any way to lengthen the space between the catches of a hem?

    Hello Jen, I'd like to know what the function of that screw is, to put pressure on the fabric to hold in the fold or to open up more room closer to the needle?

    • @JSternDesigns

      The screw loosens to move the guide... So sorry I missed your comment... Thank you for watching!

    Can you do the same type of tutorial showing the cover stitch for hemming a tee shirt. I have it all threaded and ready to go but would like to see how to fold and feed the hem

      Sorry I missed your comment. Here's a tutorial showing how to fold the fabric in the round (it's a pants hem, but the technique is the same) ua-cam.com/video/PkOotHtiW_k/v-deo.html Here is a tutorial showing how to start and stop in the round using a 4-Thread Stitch... Different stitch, but the start/stop technique is the same. ua-cam.com/video/nWuo3GfoA5A/v-deo.html Thanks for watching

    Does this work on knit fabrics and if so are there specific tips for working with this type of fabric

    • @JSternDesigns
      @JSternDesigns  6 років тому

      Yes, it works great on medium to heavy weight knits too. Make sure to adjust your differential feed for the amount of stretch your fabric has. Thanks for watching :)

    Great video. I do enjoy your Ovations videos. Question - your samples were flat is it difficult to do the blind hem in the round like on a pant leg or do you hem before you sew the inside seam?

    • @JSternDesigns
      @JSternDesigns  8 років тому

      Hi Robin...Thanks so much. I though of that as I was editing the video. You definitely want to sew a blind hem in the round when doing a pant leg... That sounds like an excellent follow up tutorial ... stay tuned :)
