- In today's episode of the baby lock ovation serger manual, I'll show you how to do a decorative reverse flatlock. Plus I'll compare that to a decorative flatlock and show you where the decorative thread goes to create each stitch.

Thank you for the scotch tape trick! What a difference when I tried it!!
:) When all else fails... That's one of my favorite scotch tape hacks!! Thanks for serging along with me!
Jennifer, you are a genius! I've tried flatlock seams in the past and walked away when the result wasn't matching the manufacturer's photos. I wanted to get this method down as I sew yet another legging from your class :) I also have a Babylock, and I taped not only the needle thread tension but also the upper looper and voila! I'm going to sew it so that the ladder is on the inside so the seam lays flat against the skin. Thank you!
I'm so happy this helped you!! Happy National Serger Month!! Thanks for watching
I love your videos, you have so many great tips and you really show how to apply these great features into garments. Thank you!
So sorry I missed your comment.... Thanks for watching.
Another wonderful application; a must try! Love your explanations; they are concise and provide "aha" moments. Please keep them coming. Two years in with my Ovation and I am still on a learning curve even with many years of sewing experience. Just never considered using tape to decrease tension. Thank you. Cheers.
Thank you for watching :)
Dont know if you guys gives a damn but if you are bored like me atm you can stream all of the new movies and series on Instaflixxer. Been watching with my girlfriend for the last months =)
@Mordechai Brysen yup, I have been watching on instaflixxer for years myself =)
Found your video from an alert reader who had posted on someone elses video about the Baby Lock Imagine Serger - she said watch your video for the answer! Thanks!
Thankyou for sharing appreciate it
You are so welcome and thank you for serging along with me!
Thank you so much for this video! I have been trying to do a three thread cover stitch on the seams of my yoga pants so they look more like ready to wear but the Lycra is so slippery that the fabric slides off the seam. This stitch is just the answer I needed...aside from an industrial four needle flat seaming machine 😄
You are so welcome! That's exactly why I love the flatlock/reverse flatlock stitch, it makes sewing tricky fabrics easy! (also sorry for the delayed response.
Awesome, as always!!!
Thank you Karen!!
Very nice tutorial thank you !!!
Thank you for the kind words :)
Thank you....great video!
Thank you for watching!
Thanks, Jen!
So sorry I missed your comment.... Thanks for watching.
Thank you , very interesting.thank you so much
Thank you and thanks for watching!
NICE video...thanks!
Thanks so much! & Thanks for watching
Thanks for the video. I can't wait to try this. What size needle did you use for metallic thread? 90/14 for metallic thread, or topstitch?
That's a great question! I can't believe I forgot to mention the needle in the video... I'm using a size 12 stretch needle. Metallic Woolly Nylon does not require a metallic or topstitch needle... as a matter of fact, I did a video showing what can happen to your knit of you use a big topstitch needle... It's not pretty :) ua-cam.com/video/jLmS_tgXQ2U/v-deo.html
Hello! Really love your videos! I do have a quick question about the Ovation because I am confused and hear different things. Are we supposed to oil our machine??
Black Hat Quilter that’s a good question. The answer is No. Unlike older machines with exposed metal parts, you can’t reach the places that may need lubrication. Those air feed ports look tempting... but please do not put anything in them besides thread.
Awesome video! Are you using regular serging thread in the loopers?
For the Reversible Flatlock Yes... for the Flatlock, I switched the decorative thread to the Upper Looper and put regular thread in the needle. Thanks for watching!
wow. just love the threading using thread loop for the needle........so smart..I have never seen that for the needle !
...my eyeballs are getting a little older now, so I'm trying to be creative and find ways to make threading easier for me to see :)
Can you use a dental floss (blue one) it's long and then has a loop on the end to thread your needle?
Sorry I missed your comment... If the dental floss fits through the eye of the needle, then yes! Thanks for watching!
Please can You show us how to make 2 treath chainstitch om the Ovation?
Yes, that's a good one! Stay Tuned :)
Today I am making men's underwear so this is a great tutorial. Will you tell me about the wooly thread? What is the brand?
Thank you! ... the woolly nylon is YLI Here's a link :) ylicorp.com/products/woolly-nylon?variant=35677760974
Thank for this video! I want to try this but i'm a little scared, is this stitch strong enough on its own for leggins? I feel like they would rip apart mid squat 😨
;) Use a Three Thread Wide stitch for the reverse Flatlock and it will be strong enough … unless you put your thumb through the seam when you’re pulling them up!

Would this type of flat lock clothing construction work with a normal serger? By normal I mean one without coverstitch capabilities.
Hi Jennifer, Good News, you can definitely do a flat lock on a "normal" serger... It's a variation of the 3-Thread Stitch :)
