    GRANDISSIMO CARROLLI!!!
    Che voce ,che emissione, che interpretazione, che classe (appassionata pure!) CHE GOLA!!!! UNICO!
    PS.

    A wonderful baritone voice. One that could sing both the lowest note for a baritone (G2) and sing the highest for the baritone (G4) in one performance. Corneil Macneil is a great example as another great baritone who also sang this role live in 1981.

    Fantastic voice--but where's the acting? He just kinda sits there. I don't get the sense of Michele's emotional collapse at all that this aria is supposed to represent.

  • @PedroZamagna
    @PedroZamagna Рік тому

    Clarification is needed. - This was supposed to be read in humor, but is a serious reflection.
    I'm not trying to be abrasive, but how is Carolli's voice here sounds nothing like the only other recordings from the 70s (71 Aida with Lavirgen), much less all other ones?
    I mean, there clearly is something that is an actual sound derivative of his voice, as we see an "even vibrato" - I don't like the term - completely non-existent throughout his recorded legacy. However, there is a lot of here that isn't voice.

    Very rich and huge baritone voice, but stiff singing, and dreadful acting, only to be outdone by the soprano, who couldn't convince a five year old that her husband's limp corpse was just rolled out before her own eyes based on the way she reacts.

      I think Carroli is a great actor.

    • @lsmart
      @lsmart 3 роки тому

      @@xxsaruman82xx87 As someone who prides himself on trying to be objective and always being open to other views and reconsideration of my own, I reviewed this recording after seeing your comment. I must say that as I currently viewed it, my above comments from 5 years ago seem overly harsh. Perhaps I came in with an overall bias because I was never a great fan of his singing. His acting here is not great by any means, but I have definitely seen plenty of worse baritone actors. However, I still stand by my view that he was never a very interpretive or emotional singer, and it came across in his facial acting when singing. For example, here he is singing Iago's Credo: ua-cam.com/video/Glr962M-XlY/v-deo.html. An ok performance if you don't know what the words he is singing really mean. Now listen to Lawrence Tibbett: ua-cam.com/video/EqgZh0LJElY/v-deo.html, or see the other great singing actor baritone, Tito Gobbi: ua-cam.com/video/1SWYKIN41WQ/v-deo.html, and you discover what this really about. Look at the incredible changes in Gobbi's face throughout, and see how amazingly fitting they are to the changes in the aria's emotional style, changing from sheer arrogance, to sinister slyness, to pure joy for evil. THAT is what singing and acting is all about.

    • @xxsaruman82xx87
      @xxsaruman82xx87 3 роки тому

      @@lsmart I agree somewhat (and I adore Gobbi and Tibbett), but I think Carroli can act with his voice. And his voice is a marvel in itself. And there is certainly no baritone to match him, let alone surpass him, today.

    • @lsmart
      @lsmart 3 роки тому +1

      @@xxsaruman82xx87 Since I have grown bored of listening to the baritones and tenors of the past 15 or so years, I can't make a blanket statement, but I certainly agree with you in general agree about that comparison. Even if there are any decent voices today, they are certainly no better interpreters than Carroli. Terfel is certainly the best voice to come along in the past two decades, but Verdi and Puccini is not a big part of his repertoire.

    • @xxsaruman82xx87
      @xxsaruman82xx87 3 роки тому

      @Leo Smart My two favourite modern baritones are Ernesto Petti and Nikoloz Lagvilava. I think Terfel is really a dramatic tenor. His voice isn’t very dark.

  • @bassoprof

    Sorry chaps! No body can compete with great Bastianini as Michele...Carolli sounds more like a third-class Russian basso. The way he shouts (not sings) the words "Nulla Silencio" is especially pitiful.

    • @caseyfranco3959
      @caseyfranco3959 4 роки тому +1

      I believe that is part of the interpretation

    • @xxsaruman82xx87
      @xxsaruman82xx87 3 роки тому +5

      Why does he sound like a Russian bass? Carroli is a dramatic baritone, not a lyric one like Battistini, so his voice is naturally much darker. Besides, Battistini's recordings make his voice much lighter than it actually was, especially in his prime. And how would you know how Battistini sounded in this role? I don't think he ever actually sang it, but if he did he certainly didn't record it. Are you sure you're not getting mixed up with Bastianini (who was a great Michele btw)?
