Yes, the singing is... extra.
Trrill™ is about florid passages, improvisatory underpinnings, staccato'd intuitions, and virtuosities even at their most ridiculous.
But it's also about the biggest, boldest form of vocal emission, with aural examples of basically correct singing, correct impostazione-chiaroscuro, vowel clarity, firm and centered pitch, correct vibrato action, absence of throatiness or thickness, sounds free from constriction and from the acoustic noise that accompanies it-with occasional video examples that demonstrate what the body, face, mouth, jaw, and tongue look like when used with correct impostazione-the vocal emission of the one and only Italian school.
Caveat: I'm biased in favor of #baritones and baritone literature, but if you want to learn about and listen to all the greatest singers in the old-school tradition, explore this spreadsheet (voice parts are separated by tabs):

2 full octaves of baritone, that sounds bassier than most basses today, and with better high notes than most tenors.
Lol so true, I saw The Big MAC huge voice in the house!!!
One of the most difficult arias for dramatic baritone.
Fantastic! What a singer and actor. This is a real baritone. Today, most baritones are like tenors without top notes.
No, they're worse. Haha. Petti and Lagvilava are great, though.
Macneil had a stunning top voice right up to the end of his career. I heard him live in Dallas in 1984. And take note, folks -- this is a 60-year-old man singing here.
@williamreynolds :: "60" isn't that old for an opera singer.
@@aurelianida4805right. Not too many of those around these days. Tucker, Kraus, Nilsson, Sutherland, Rysanek, Kirsten, Dunn, Pav, Amara, Olivero, Price all sang past 60 and didn’t embarrass themselves. Then there was Moffo, Ricciarelli, Carteri, Suliotis, Cerquetti, Millo, Sass, and a slew of others who barely made it to 40.
He is just like baritone Domingo!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Oh my God...this man was always a vocal miracle!!!
To find a bariton like this today, you have to call the Interpol and the Mosad.
For the resonance and timbre of that low G, I wouldn't be surprised if he had also a low D/C!

America seems to have a knack for producing baritonnes. Milnes, MacNeil, Warren, Merril
Not to mention Tibbett!
@@xxsaruman82xx87 ... John Charles Thomas, Robert Weede.. and more recently Thomas Hampson...
@@liedersanger1 Hampson ???? must be kidding 🙈
@@ingriddoppler Not my favorite but admired by many, if not by you.
@@liedersanger1 Hampson is a light bari-tenor. People liked him as the voice sounded ok, but was clearly a Mozart leider voice. Also, at that time there were few other well known baritones around.
I’d never want to hear him in Verdi or Puccini. Would not include him in the above list..
That's what I call singing with the body!!!
Even in his later years, still superb!
Almeno secondo me.
Veramente:hai detto bene!!!!
I saw this live in the house in 1981. It was thrilling then too. And what an impressive low G (for a baritone) at 1:00! My late teacher, Jerome Hines, wrote that MacNeil actually had a good low F too.
He sang the Dutchmann, so he obviously had great low notes. And he had a High C#.

Just bought this on dvd
My Favorite when I was in High School saw him all the time at the MET, The Biggest Voice No Mic For THE BIG MAC! R.I..P
So jealous. I love him.
So many critics heavily criticised his acting, but I just don't see it. Sure he's not as involved as Gobbi, or Taddei, but literally NO ONE is. His acting is fantastic IMO, but his singing his EVEN BETTER!!!!
I think the answer lies in the fact that he does more of his acting visually, as opposed to vocally. Gobbi and others find ways to insert their acting into their vocal inflections. MacNeil doesn't really do that; instead, he relies on his onstage acting abilities.
@@williamreynolds4435 acting is a physical thing, though so why would they just hate him for that? The voice is already telling the story and it embellishes his physicality.
Still great, even in his 60s. BRAVO!!!!
What a masterful performance! His was a dramatic baritone of thrilling richness, and he was a powerful presence on stage. Hearing him sing was a life changing experience for me, Thank you so much for posting this great moment of opera history.
In reply to a recent comment by Jef Olson, BIG MAC did sing in 1968 MET Broadcast as the Dutchman & as a student I sang in the chorus of this opera when he performed it in Seattle early in 1972. Few if any Verdi Baritones in our time have the low range for this role which was & is often sung by Bass-Baritones such as George London & Hans Hotter & others to this day. BIG MAC had the greatest vocal range of any Verdi Baritone, that I am aware of, in his time. I remember him even AUDIBLY marking down a full octave during some rehearsals & this was the DUTCHMAN. I have yet to hear an off-the-air recording of BIG MAC’S MET Broadcast as the Dutchman but perhaps it will surface eventually after royalty issues for still living cast members are negotiated.
A recording of his Dutchman does exist, and I posted a snippet of it on my channel several years ago: ua-cam.com/video/E5CRgtMAc3w/v-deo.html
That recording is on UA-cam(unless it was deleted. I've heard it. He was superb in the role, but it's not one associated with him.
Oh my God you brought this jewel of a video back! God bless you so much! Listen to the easy emission from low G to High G in this one aria that only Macneil and Carroli were able to both do so successfully. THAT'S the true makings of a bonafide vocally complete Baritone -- both ends of the vocal spectrum are resonant and even and balanced.
Agreed. That is what I admire about his voice and this clip: that sonorous, effortless G at the bottom (and you sense that there's a lot more below that) to the dramatic G at the end and everything in between sung with such focus and ring. I wish I had had the chance to hear him live.
@@nickpotalivo7527 And there’s a lot more above the High G. He had a high C#.
You're joking, right? Bastianini did this perfectly. I'm not saying the singers you mentioned are bad, but c'mon, the *only* one who could do it? There's plenty who did great at it
@@DubiousDubs Find me any other baritones who had both the low G and the high G other than MacNeil and Carroli. Bastiannini thinned out on the low G and his high G was uncharacteristically strained and overall lack focus in characterization
@deadwalke9588 ok I ain't gonna take your word for shit if you think his high G was strained. It was absolutely thunderous, and the musicality of the puece as a whole was far superior to what MacNeil displayed here.
Absolutely great.Fantastic voice, huge, powefull, glorious high tones powerful lower register.
Truly the great dramatic baritone of his time, perhaps of all time, in fine voice in one of his best roles. Thanks for posting these great historic gems!
What a performance! Oh my God what he is doing is incredible!
Mc Neil! One of my favourites drammatic bariton !here, he is outstanding !
Now that's truly impressive voice! BRAVO!!

The best part is he gets his dark full bodied sound without depressing his larynx
YES! He is the best
It is one of my references! Can’t stop listening to this recording!
Masterpiece ... for the interpretation, for the octaves, for everything ... one of Puccini's most difficult arias ... the best

Nulla! Silenzio!
È la! Non s'è spogliata, non dormeâ
Aspetta. Chi? Che cosa aspetta?
Chi? Chi? Forse il mio sonno.
Chi l'ha trasformata?
Qual ombra maledetta è discesa fra noi?
Chi l'ha insidiata?
Il Talpa! Troppo vecchio.
Il Tinca forse? No, no, non pensa, beve.
E dunque chi? Luigi? No,
Sei tu! Su!
T'ho colto!

Magnificent BIG MAC
Magnifico
He is one of my favorite baritone. His true prime was rather short though. Mid sixties. He sings the E natural open. That was a critical flaw in his technique. It puts too much strain on the larynx and the vocal folds. He could do it with the Incredibly strong voice that he had. But these flaws are always detrimental in the long run.
But he was still great, for all of his career.
Who cares about vocal flaws when you can sing like him! Even with the flaws in his technique, he produced sounds no other living 0r deceased baritone can come close to. I'd rather see and hear someone show us god-like singing for a few years rather than playing it safe at 85-90% so that the voice holds up for a few more seasons.
Love mc neil, but my favourite version of this magnificent aria, from an overall perspective of both singing and acting is tito gobbis version, followed by carlo tagliabue and then this, but all are excellent in their own ways,
We all love those versions, too, but how this video differs is that it is a live performance, so what you hear is the actual sound manifested made by MacNeil's actual physical gestures and coordinations, jaw, breathing, etc.. Gobbi's and Tagliabue's are filmed in a studio and lip synched to pre-recorded tracks. Not complaining! Just pointing it out.
Bravo master!
THANK you for this video,is there more from him we can listen to? Please send them,he is to good to be forgotten!!

He is in unusually good voice for this late. It may be the music, which doesn’t give him the chance to sing those scary wide open F’s that were characteristic of his singing from the early 70’s on. The G he has to cover!
the low note is a throw away note, but still very well sung. very impressive even if octave count is pointless.
