One thing I noticed today was that usually my horse, Spoon, stays where I leave him if I am wandering about on foot, but today when riding we came across a pretty gruesome scene, I got off to investigate and Spoon didn't stay put, he followed me until we had left the site behind. It reminded me of how pets sometimes look to their owners for comfort/protection in frightening situations.

When looting horses, they are less likely to kick you when their body is relaxed, head down and not swishing their tails.
This mechanic is one of my favourites.
You can pat the horss and see its head drop as it relaxes. Looting horses is one of my favourite activities just because I enjoy watching and reading their body language.

When you ride your horse on paving or cobblestones (typically in St. Denis), no matter your speed, the cores of your steed will drain faster. This illustrates that this type of surface is not very suitable for horse's articulations and their musculoskeletal system in general.

You actually missed a very important one! I don't know online, but when playing history-mode, as long as you bond with the horse if you pet him while galloping him, his running out energy will increase and it will last a longer time. It'll be a little bit if you're in a low-level bond, but it'll increase notably if you're in high or full-level bond, acting as the respect that horse has for the player and how it wants to please them. I find this one a very beautiful one. ~

Someone's probably brought this up but I expected the fact that horses actually have realistic body language to be mentioned because its super cool and is an actual useful and practical mechanic. If you want to loot a stranger's horse, especially bounty hunter horses, you can watch their ears and head and they'll actually start tossing their heads and moving their ears back as they get more and more agitated. They'll also do those little agitated steps like they're trying to move away.

One of the I think directors in charge of essentially making the horses come to life in RDR2 was married to a horsewoman and had a daughter who loves horses - i think it really shows that this game had input from real horse people! Additional small fun fact about player owned horses for both Singleplayer and Multiplayer:
there's chance for players horse to lay down on it's own while being idle, for example when player is using or relaxing at wilderness camp or even simply being idle while off the horse
Sadly as far as I know there's no way to trigger this faster, you'll have to wait for this one

Also, as you bond with your horse, you can do little trick gates. My favorite one is “horse drifting “, which is just essentially having the horse walk sideways like the walking horses do In shows. Pretty cool!

My thoroughbred Calypso is very antsy, and refuses jumps pretty often (although I’ve been practicing with her and surprisingly she’s getting better). Very scared of predators and gunfire. I really wonder how many floats the developers put into these horses. As in how many values go up with specific interactions. I know bonding plays a big role even in how close your horse approaches you when you whistle. Level 1 horses tend to just stand put a little further away while Level 4 horses come a lot closer.
One of my horses in online was super skittish around bears and wolves, bucking me off pretty fast if I didn‘t spam pat it and move away. Today it really doesn‘t care anymore, I can get in really close without much of a problem. The thing is this had nothing to do with the Level of bonding, because it was still the same at Level 4. I really wonder if there are some kind of hidden mechanics happening with just positive reenforcement or if I‘m imagining things.

They are so gorgeous looking and actually made me interested in learning more about real horses. An absolutely masterwork of a game this is. This vid right here makes me appreciate and praise the game and its realistic horse system even more.

With your “personality” one, I’ve noticed one trait that drove me a bit mad in the game. The man who races you on his horse (was it a nokota?) to various spots on the map, I remember that he shoots his horse for losing but, if you shoot him before he gets the chance and you take the horse, the horse is forever “skittish” and will constantly whinny and kick up like it’s scared no matter what. I was trying to hunt bears and took his horse from him as my temporary horse to hold more pelts and it was non-stop reacting to nothing, making me even more nervous that a bear or cougar was close by when it just wasn’t. 🤦‍♀️

HOWEVER, online it is possible to free horse from wagons by having an accident/crash (unlevel ground/rocks, or dynamite in the right place... risking killing the horse, but I've freed several horses. Great way to check out a draft horse test ride before buying one)

I can confirm that the horses have personalities! I got a turkoman and i got it to level 4 bonding but it was a very skittish horse especially near gunshots and wildlife! With the smallest threat it was throwing me to the ground! So i decided to get another one just to try! I bought the same horse, same coat and both are females! The 2nd horse now at lv 3 bonding is fearless compared to the first! I was standing next to a bear and it didn't throw me down! Same with the wolves! :) i really find this fascinating

I have something funny atm in my second playthrough of the story. I'm in chapter 2 atm and since I'm avoiding a certain Strauss mission ( people who played the whole story know what i'm talking about :D ) AND because I'm petty and therefor keeping Micah in jail for the moment, I'm pretty high in honor. So mayby it's because I'm high in honor so early in the game. Anyway; to keep a certain fate on the backburner for now, I'm doing some challenges and was working on the gambling challenges. Since playing a few hours poker emaciated my horse who was outside the saloon I brought him to the stable, so he would get his feed. PLayed poker for a few hours and went on to the next challenge. So I go outside the saloon and whistle my horse; completely forgetting I stabled him and so ofcourse he wasn't coming. But I didn't realise right away so I whistled a few times.....and what do you know; a chestnut horse that I didn't know came to me; no saddle or bridle, but that doesn't matter in the game anyway. So I hopped on and rode to the stable, sold the chestnut and got my own horse. But thats not even all; now every time Arthur spends some time in the saloon gambling that same chestnut is waiting for me outside the saloon. I think I sold him 4 times already. I don't know if it's my high honor that gave me somehow a strange horse to hop on without getting negative honor or being accused of stealing or it's some glitch that never happened my first playthrough, because during the first playthrough I always had my own horse waiting outside. But I'm not complaining; saves me alot of running to the stable to get my horse back; I now can simply ride on some friendly chestnut that seems to have a liking for Arthur. If it happens again I will keep him/her, because now I'm writing this I realise how faithfull that little chestnut is so now I feel a little guilty having him sold several times now :D

    • @Nicola_Bailey
      @Nicola_Bailey 2 роки тому

While it could be a glitch I'm pretty sure that's actually "Scraggy Nag", who is the game's backup horse should yours be unavailable (usually because it's been killed).

one thing i have so far found to be true for all horses in the game is that they hate uncontrolled fires. shoot out a lantern and the structure it was on catching fire will lead to a panicked flight reaction (unless you're riding it, then it will just show its discomfort). same goes for burning bodies and pretty much any fire that isn'ta camp fire or lamp.
also, you don't need to lasso a temporary horse to lead it. simply whistle for it and it will stay on your heels. it's a great help to make hunting trips more lucrative, as you can now carry two big game pelts. it usually makes more sense to ride the temporary horse and have your main horse follow though, as your main horse is usually faster and like that you don't risk accidentally taking off and leaving the other horse behind. also, every step riding a horse helps bonding with it.
