MrYoucandoityourself does this works only with laminate flooring ? Wondering if this would work on engineered hardwood .

@@MrYoucandoityourself Bummer! I just learned the hard way - Doesn't work on Pergo Outlast+ flooring. The "laminate" is only a couple of microns thick and it just splits, no matter how carefully you try.

Does this technique work for the engineered wood flooring type that has a high density core board? I am using the Mohawk Engineered wood flooring sold at Costco. It has a thin clear protection layer on top, then a thin wood veneer, a high density core and the a thin balance layer of plywood on the bottom. I’d share a link but I think this wouldn’t allow me to

@@MrYoucandoityourself thank you! I was afraid you’d say this as I just bought the tools to try the heat gun process and I don’t have a table saw. Do you think it’s worth trying the heat gun option? My slats don’t look like these ones. These have plywood (engineered wood) layers. Mines has what looks more like compressed carton with a very thin layer of plywood at the lowest most layer. If I by the time I do the v-Groove extraction I’ll have s thing veneer of wood and the ‘splash guard’ clear form over it

What is the measurement between the router grooves? How far is the groove from the edge? 1 1/2"?
Hi Jason, I don't remember exactly about this project, but depth of the nosing should be 1 inch and front - double of the thickness of material. Try to calculate with your router bit. it's easy. Thanks!

Is there any other way to router the bottom if you dont have a router? Perhaps a table saw? The square look looks great.
I never tried with table saw.
You might try a dado on table saw
Does the heat gun have to be a certain temperature? The laminate seems to crack and not plasticize when heating.

This is great idea and I did try this but it seems not all laminates will bend this way, I have tried a number of ways and the laminate snaps when heated, it does not bend. I think this would work better with a vinyl flooring.

lf you have to do more nousings like this build a heated table and leave more boards on top until are heated you just glue it and clamps,.just my idea.

Very good that's what I did 10-12 years ago when I first started with laminated MDF planks. Just didn't film it. By the way wear a mask when cutting that shit people. One of our guys has Loung cancer disease cause of cutting MDF and wood planks for 20 some years. A non smoker so it proves that we are fragile.

Can you do this with Luxury Vinyl Plank?
I've seen this type of stair tread nosing in other videos.
I'm in the process of doing this with LVP. I'm using a 2" x 12" for the stair tread as a base for my LVP. My LVP has a thickness of 3mm.
I'm using a 1/2" round over router bit to make a softer stair tread profile edge on the 2" x 12", yet it will still have a small portion that is flat at the face of the stair tread.
I choose to use a 1/4" round nose router bit instead of any sharp pointed router bit to cut the grooves in the back of my LVP.
I didn't want to have a "sharp" stress point at the bend radius of the LVP. I think that a sharp profile edge (90') might have a tendency to crack over time due to the stress of bending the top laminate/wear layer. I will use approximately 3 cuts with the 1/4" round router bit for the top and bottom of my chosen stair tread radius.
Once I have verified the LVP cuts I will use the same adhesive to attach the LVP to the 2" x 12" stair tread base.
The only detail that will change is at the landing at the top of the stairs. The upstairs floor will have 3/4" subfloor with 1/4" luan I will have to make and attach a similar profile at that location so that my LVP nosing will provide a smooth transition to the LVP flooring.
I guess it’s possible.

why not order stair nosing when ordering floor? Can choose if you want rounded or squared nosing
Sometimes it’s hard to find nothing. Some suppliers don’t have it stock.
I tried this but my laminate just snapped.
This technique works for vinyl and cork flooring with flexible top. Laminate flooring you have to cut 45 degrees and glue it together then bevel the edge and put stain and finish.
Great work but there's one problem, your nosing can't just be a quarter inch cork board, treads are thick wood at an inch and a half for a reason because of the extreme force they will take on the edge, you can't cut the nose off and use this material as the new nose, not strong enough, this idea still works but you would want to wrap around the wood nosing instead to keep it structurally stable.
Hi Jonathan, we are using this type of nosing for so long and don't have any problem. This is not just idea - this is working model!
I didn't say it was a bad idea, just saying that quarter inch cork board can't be the only thing supporting that nose of the step, it will break sooner or later and worse somebody could get hurt, if I was going to do this I would make the cuts to wrap the solid piece of wood
@@jonathancowdin3775 Stairs nosing and tread I glued down with construction glue and bottom nosing attached very tide to the riser - it's hard to break the nosing, believe me.
