  • (22 Jul 2016) More than 100 migrants were rescued on Friday from their sinking rubber boat in Libyan territorial waters.
The rescue operation was a collaboration between Migrant Offshore Aid Station (MOAS), the nongovernmental organisation Proactiva Open Arms and the Norwegian Border Patrol.
The operation was also accompanied by a helicopter and a warship from EUNAVFOR MED (European Union Naval Force Mediterranean).
For the past year, EU naval vessels in the Mediterranean have been working to intercept smuggling boats in a programme called Operation Sophia.
According to the International Organisation for Migrants, more than 240,000 migrants have reached Europe by sea in 2016 and nearly 3,000 people have died in the attempt.
