Every time i watch this scene, I say, 'This time, this time he'll make it" and I know one day, he will
In the video game he does
Like every time! you are just screaming along with everyone else make it just make it!
Like how he identified himself as an officer when he showed his 'Hershey ' Captain bars
@@asthmaticnightmare215didn't even know there was a video game.
lol i say the same thing
Didn't guy Martin recreate the jump at the same place
You know that all these scenes weren't in the original script, McQueen got drunk one night and said he'd quit if he didn't get to have some fun on a motorbike. But thank god they're there, can't imagine the film without them...
I was there. It was exactly as you said.
Who told you that?
@@eugeneninnie3754 it's in a book I read a long time ago, was about McQueen's career I think
They tried to make this scene as accurate as possible.

Who could ever forget Steve McQueen on the motor bike? One of the greatest all time scenes ever made! Love it.
The bike that McQueen used in the film is the very same bike that Henry Winkler used on 'Happy Days' when he played Arthur Fonzerelli.
(Per Henry Winkler)
@@careercriticalthinker Henry Winkler, who portrayed the character Arthur "Fonzie" Fonzarelli on the television show "Happy Days," rode a motorcycle known as a Triumph Trophy TR5 during the earlier seasons of the series. The Triumph Trophy TR5 was a British-made motorcycle manufactured by Triumph Engineering from 1949 to 1958. It was a popular model among motorcyclists during that era. Fonzie's motorcycle became an iconic symbol of his character's cool and rebellious persona on the show. While Steve McQueen rode a 1961 Triumph TR6 Trophy motorcycle in the movie "The Great Escape." The iconic motorcycle chase scene, where McQueen's character attempts to escape pursuing German soldiers, has become one of the most memorable moments in cinematic history.
The Triumph TR6 Trophy and Triumph Trophy TR5 are two different motorcycles produced by Triumph during the 1960s.
The Triumph TR6 Trophy, as mentioned earlier, was the motorcycle ridden by Steve McQueen in the movie "The Great Escape." It was a 650cc single-cylinder motorcycle, known for its ruggedness and off-road capabilities. The TR6 Trophy was a popular choice for desert racing and off-road enthusiasts due to its powerful engine and durable frame.
On the other hand, the Triumph Trophy TR5 was a different model from Triumph. It was a 500cc twin-cylinder motorcycle, which was designed more for touring and road riding rather than off-road adventures. The TR5 featured a smooth and refined engine, comfortable seating, and other touring-oriented features. It was intended for riders who preferred long-distance cruising and a more relaxed riding experience.
In summary, the main difference between the two motorcycles is their engine size and intended purpose. The Triumph TR6 Trophy was a 650cc single-cylinder off-road motorcycle, while the Triumph Trophy TR5 was a 500cc twin-cylinder touring motorcycle. Obviously, the TR6 would lend itself better for a combat role.
Actually, a 'motorbike' is what little kiddies ride on the sidewalk. What Steve rode is termed a "Motorcycle" just as did I for 67 years (Just recently gave mine to my youngest son)
Nope... The scene is funny but justa bad edited

This is the single greatest scene ever filmed. A huge star filming a very risky stunt. The cinematography is beautiful. Thanks Steve McQueen.
Almost as good as First Blood bike chase scene.
bud ekins did the jump
McQueen did some scenes wearing googles as one of his character's pursuers.
@@dylanjordan4747 I don't think so. According to a biography published in 1987 he did the jump.
@@jimcram3650 ekins 100% did the jump you see in the movie, though I do think I remember hearing that Steve did do the jump just not on camera and without the barbed wire fence
You can really tell he loves motorcycles. Great clip.

And McQueen and Eakins participated in the ISDT races together on the same team. During the nineteen sixties the guys the guys at the Triumph factory loved McQueen. You can't buy publicity like this.

McQueen even played the soldier who hits the wire. That's how much he loved and could ride motorcycles.
No, it's a friend of his, Joël Robert, Belgian motocross rider, six times 250 cc world champion.
@@firemainstreet Yes, as with the big leaps performed by Bud Ekins, the movie producers didn't want to risk injuring McQueen.
Always loved how Steve gives the Triumph a pat after the crash as if to say, "It's not your fault, we almost made it."
No matter how many times I watch this movie I always think Hilts will get away. Thats how good this film is.
No, that's how dumb YOU are. Lol
Unbelievable motorcycle skills. That jump is incredible, especially on an old bike like that. No helmet?!? No CGI?!? It looks like they even used real barbed wire. McQueen is the GOAT!
I love how he taps the tank of the bike when he's caught, as if to say (you did good) absolute classic!
I think he liked his Triumphs.
Just like petting a horse.
Pats the gas tank like it was his horse. You could even say that the gasoline was like blood as it ran out and soaked his leg at the end.
Liked that touch McQueen did. Like he was saying goodbye to an old friend "We almost did it".
Wow.
👏👏
6:28 he pats the bike as if to say thanks and goodbye, love that so much

Exactly..having ridden since 73', and over fifty years later..still ride..Harley Street glide
@@michaelhegyan7464 My very first motorcycle was a '46 Harley EL 61 cu in. I bought from a Harley shop in Salinas Ca...at the age of 16. Although I rode Harleys for many years, including 100 miles/day to a job in San Jose, CA for three years, and put well over 125K on three of them, ....I quit riding for a spell, and made a move to the southern coast of Oregon for a job which didn't pan out. I moved back to CA, went back to my old job for 30 more years. Shortly after I moved back to CA, my ex BIL rode up my driveway on a brand new Honda 750 4 cylinder..... I was aware of Hondas, but had paid them scant attention....took it for a short ride....goodbye Harleys and I've never looked back. I was never aware of this until many years later.....61cu in is 1000 ccs....so, even in '46, Harley was paying attention to the metric system...and 74 cu in is 1200 cc. Also, my 'last' Harley was a Sporster.....although I once did take a test ride on a V-Rod.
In 2013, I rode my Honda ST 1100 V4 from CA all around the USA on a mission to 'bag' the 13 states I had never previously been in before....ALL east of the MS River. Six weeks later, and with a motel bill of $11K, I had accomplished my mission.
Now, at the age of 83, just gave my last Honda ST--1100 to my youngest son.
If you think I must be rich, couldn't be farther from the truth....never bought a new car in my entire life and currently drive an 88 Pontiac Fiero.....the ONLY American car with a true mid-engine. New motorcycles? Well, that's another story...but I always paid cash.
I don't know if you're familiar with Mike Corbin....the aftermarket seat maker? His shop in Hollister, CA, was about 25 miles from where I lived for over 60 years until about three months ago....when I finally combined households with the woman I had met while on a motorcycle trip on my way to Vancouver Island....to meet some friends at their 'summer home' on Vancouver Island...whom I had previously met 400 miles down Baja CA.....they told me to be sure to stop and meet their friend...and THAT is how I met my 2nd wife. For 16 years we had maintained two households 210 miles apart, but three months ago both my sons showed up with a large moving van and moved mostly my 'shop' here.
For years I went on Wednesday rides with the guy (Mel Watts) who drove Corbin's truck, and twice I rode to Sturgis with Corbin....speeding and tickets mean nothing to that man. I stayed in the house he rented at Sturgis, and even though he rode like a 'Bat out of Hell', luckily we were never stopped.....too many other targets, I guess.

¡As a biker I love this scene since I was a child, and what I like the most apart from the whole scene itself, is when he slaps the bike saying "thank you friend, we have done everything possible" V for everyone.
yes -- my take also
McQueen was actually riding a Triumph motorcycle mocked up to look like a German bike ...!
It was a Triumph T 6, the "Nazi's" were riding Triumphs also. I've rode Triumphs myself since the 1960's. Triumph has probably made millions of those 90 degree vertical twin cylinder engines over the decades. Including McQueen's, the ones my dad rode in the 60's, and my current 2005 Bonneville.
You can buy a brand new one in 2021. Hard to believe my dad is in his 80's and Bonneville's still look almost exactly the same as they did in the 60's, (and probably before that). Still have the same 90 degree vertical twin cylinder. Also, "pea shooter" pipes and straight across handlebars that you have to take off and throw away the day after you buy it==ua-cam.com/video/v0f2tRHSx1s/v-deo.html
I went out and bought a triumph loved it . I'm watching it again and thinking about getting another one. I have a 66 in my garage that I'm rebuilding again. My Harleys are for long trips. Can't look at movies with motorcycles in them gets me stupid.
i think that nazis were ridein bmw motorcycle.
It was his own motorbike apparently.

When Steve rides the bike to get away while the music plays and they close in on him, He seems to be flying the flag for Freedom for mankind against Evil. No matter how many times I see it I just will him to make it.
Steve McQueen what a acting legend
One of Steve McQueen's best moments in cinema 🎥 history.. truly iconic.. can't think of anyone else who could have pulled this off. He was an amazing great actor... doing this motorcycle 🏍 jump instead of a stuntman just made him even more legendary. He was one of a kind.

That patting of the motorcycle at the end, man's true love for his machine 🏍

His best mate did the stunt. On a Triumph the oldest bike manufacturer in the world. Nice 1 Steve.

Ok, how many old Army Veterans out there remember driving their tracked vehicles over those road side markers while stationed in Germany? I had a buddy that used to do it on purpose when his TC wasn’t paying attention, lol. And God help you if you do a tight steer maneuver inside a town and chip up a curb, the citizens will hunt you down! To be fair to the Germans, we were extra careful in cities, they always kept their streets clean and beautiful, each person would sweep the section of road and sidewalk in front of their house not because they had to but they took pride in their property which is part of what makes their country amazing to live in.
After all these years i still love this scene.

Absolutely. He makes that bike act just as hard as any other part of his body.
I wish they shot film like this again. We can see where the character is going and why he is going there.
Apparently it was also Steve McQueen who played the German soldier hitting hit the wire
"During the climactic motorcycle chase in "The Great Escape" (1963), director John Sturges allowed Steve McQueen to ride (in disguise) as one of the pursuing German soldiers, so that in the final sequence, through the magic of editing, he's actually chasing himself. McQueen played the German motorcyclist who hits the wire.
Although McQueen did his own motorcycle riding, there was one stunt he did not perform: the hair-raising five foot jump over a fence. This was done by McQueen's friend Bud Ekins, who was managing a Los Angeles-area motorcycle shop when recruited for the stunt. It was the beginning of a new career for Ekins, as he later doubled for McQueen in "Bullitt" (1968), and did much of the motorcycle riding on "CHiPs."
McQueen's character of Hilts was based on amalgamation of several characters, including Major Dave Jones, a flight commander during Doolittle's Raid who made it to Europe, and was shot down and captured, and Colonel Jerry Sage, who was an O.S.S. Agent in the North African desert when he was captured. Colonel Sage was able to don a flight jacket and pass as a flier, otherwise he would have been executed as a spy. Another inspiration was probably Squadron Leader Eric Foster, who escaped seven times from German prisoner-of-war camps.
During idle periods while this movie was in production, all cast and crew members, from McQueen and James Garner to production assistants, and obscure food service workers, were asked to take thin, five-inch strings of black rubber and knot them around other thin strings of black rubber of enormous length. The finished results of all of this knotting were the coils and fences of barbed wire seen throughout the movie. (IMDb)"
Us kids were crushed when he couldn't make the second jump.
the plan was to shoot in Hollywood; sent a crew over to assess the scene in Europe: James Garner: "the problem with Germany, is that it looks like Germany"! so location shooting entered the plan.
You can see in his heart ❤️ and mind he is still thinking 💭 about his next escape. 😊❤🎉
