- One of those movie scenes which makes you shout "NO! YOU STUPID BUGGER!" when you watch it for the first time, this scene from 'The Great Escape' sees PoW camp escapees Squadron Leader Bartlett (Richard Attenborough) and Flight Lieutenant McDonald (Gordon Jackson) caught out by what McDonald himself called "The easiest trick in the world to trip up a suspect!" The irony is astounding lol
This scene is always hard for me to watch because it always breaks my heart. It's a grim reminder of how even the smallest, most insignificant detail can bring you down.
Ozzythenutter1046LS Earlier in the film in the camp Macdonald warns the POW's not to get caught out by the Germans suddenly speaking English which he then forgets himself
R.I.P. Richard Attenborough
R I P Richard a great actor and great director
Translation from french:
- Ah, français! (Ah, french!)
- Ja voll. (Yes.) [in german]
- Commerçant ? (Shopkeeper/salesman?)
- Oui. (Yes.) [in french, this time]
- Parlez-vous français ? (Do you speak french?) [with an accent as thick as the gestapo guy, lol]
- Un peu. (some / a little / a bit.)
- Votre accent est très bon. (Your accent is very good) [still with a thick accent lol]
[Note that a french won't say that. Your french is good precisely when you don't have any accent, or speak it without accent]
- Oh, je l'ai *études fait* dans l'école supérieure. (Oh, i have *studies done* it in high school.)
[Mangled grammar and vocabulary. Should be: Oh, je l'ai *étudié* au lycée.]
- C'est bien, passez. (That's fine, go) [Should be: C'est bon, passez.]
- Merci. (Thank you.)
- Au revoir, messieurs. (Goodbye, gentlemen.)
- Au revoir. (Goodbye.)
"Your arms... up!"
One of the greatest films ever made. Alongside Flight of the Phoenix.
Mac was fell for the error which Haynes made in practice lol, .."Goodluck to us Danny" lol
Great scene. Superbly acted. Thanks for uploading.
He was suspicious that they might be escaped prisioners so he decided to try and trick them when they thought they had gotten away with it
It's roughly: "English? You threaten me with a gun? Put it away at once."
A rather rude way to react. Even his first reply on being stopped is a rude way to say "What's the matter?"
Talk about karma earlier in the film McDonald while in the camp used English after speaking German and tells the pow not to fall for it German always
@VanillaSugar121 Translation of what he is saying to the guard: "Me, an Englishman? You are threatening me with a gun?! Put that away at once!" - "Oh, you're German?" - "Of course!" - "It's ok, move on, we're sorry." And then they leave him alone. He gets away quite easily there... :-P
they so nearly pulled it off. What a wally, what an absolute wally!
Your German is Good and I hear so is Your French!!!! Words From Karl-Otto Alberty!!!!
However brilliant we may be and however long we might evade him, sooner or later, that grim reaper sticks a pistol in our chest and says "Arms up!"
R.I.P. Richard Attenborough (1923-2014).
rip great actor in this part
The historical truth of this event is far more horrific and batbaric than what is portrayed.
Alan Ironside It was indeed. Those Germans were bastards.
It,s amazing how everyone in the picture kept their hat on
duh duh duh duh duh, loved that tune lol :)
@sephjnr the patrol is on a hurry looking for the guy, so if they think thy made a mistake stopping a german civilian... yes, they would let him go
Unforgettable!
Thank you so much for your reply. I've wanted to know for a long time.
Does anyone know the direct translation at 2:31, I know the officer accuses Bartlett of being English and I've only caught fragments of what was said i.e. "you draw your pistol on me?" and that the officer apologizes because he buys Bartlett's German accent. Can anyone fill in the blanks?
your arms... UP
At 3:12 if bartlett didn't respond to that annoying s.s. officer maybe he could be like i dont know what your talking about.
Yeah, i have seen this movie and it was great :)
It is a great scene...
@callumrocksyoursocks Hehehe - goes to show how much this scene resonates in the British culture if we can still get people coming back to this classic :D
today i found out that McDonald (the actor, not the real life character) was born round the corner from me
At 2:37 the officer holds the gun in his left hand. At 2:41 it's in his right hand.
What's a bit silly from 2:31 is that even through Roger is speaking in German, he is pretty much ordering the patrol to fuck off even though he's meant to be a civillian. Wouldn't he have been arrested for that at least?
It's really kind of silly, isn't it? It is clear that the Gestapo men suspected them. They wouldn't have bothered trying to trip them up; they would have just hauled them in. Fun scene, of course, but it's a bit absurd. :)
I'm here from watching the German Version of the Numberwang Mitchell and Webb sketch :)
"...ach Sie sind Deutscher?" " Selbstverständlich...."
Richard Attenborough spoke German , one may forgive me, with such a horrible accent
that makes me shiver. Everyone three miles around would have noticed it.
Nonetheless I reckon him to have been a great actor.
Is it true the reason they were all killed instead of just being taken back to the POW camp was because Hitler didn't want to be made to look like a fool after so many men managed to escape and get so far before capture?
What's the town called were the scene was made?
He touches the barbed wire several times without even looking to see whether he's about to grasp a barb.
I'm here from playing metal gear solid 3 and 4! and I saw the hideo kojima made mgs from reference to this movie just came to see the familiarities.
your arms UP! lol
your '''hounds''' up! LOL XD
He screwed up lol
So what was actually said in French at 00:26? I can't make it out.
Longest shop name in the world on the side of that building at 1:01.....
can somebody who knows german tell me what's being said at 2:31
Can someone translate the French that the Gestapo guy speaks?
So close
Lol, talk about misunderstanding. Yes, that would make more sense!
What does he say to the German soldiers at 2:30 as I don't know much German?
R.I.P. John Hammond.
What is the german saying at 3:11
Hahaha, lol he actually does say hounds. What the?
The Germans got em in the end!
Just before 2.20 the rooftop panorama with Roger in the foreground has at least one TV aerial in it. Tsk, schoolboy error.
Maybe if they were not in a rush trying to hunt down a British POW.
Ur not serious?
Is this actual real footage of an escape or is it from a movie?
Yes it is a 100% real escape from WW2 captured on film using the very first cellular phone with a built in camera. Note the music that is heard playing in the background, probably being broadcast from loudspeakers. Isn't it uncanny how it seems to mach the pace of their pursuit...fascinating stuff.
This is real
boob72 Are you being sarcastic? Cos it is real...
Pilkie101 No, this video is of a real escape, SE France 1943
It is from the movie The Great Escape based on a true escape story during WW2.
