@@joncoda365 in the last few decades, USPS has unions unfond of Queens's hyphenated addresses and I used to have to beat up on merchants' software to accept my address the way I wanted to enter it. I didn't always succeed.
It's too bad. It's wonderfully quirky animalistic and it did let you know where you were. If you were driving east in East New York [Brooklyn] on Atlantic Avenue looking for 3802, you'd have a hint as to what was going on when the addresses jumped from something like 3520 to 7410 if you saw a hyphen in the latter address.. 3802 is on a different Brooklyn Atlantic Avenue in the gated community of Sea Gate.

It used to be that street name signs in Queens were blue on white in Queens, but white on black in Brooklyn. This did help drivers know which borough they were in. BTW, the Bronx was white on blue and both Manhattan and Staten Island were black on yellow (it was pretty obvious whether you were in Manhattan or Staten Island).
There is one place where the Bronx-Manhattan border is funky. That is the "Marble Hill" section. It is on the "Bronx side" of the Broadway Bridge, but is part of Manhattan.

I’ve passed The Hole numerous times while going to Long Beach or my cousin’s house in Howard Beach and always wondered why it’s at a lower elevation than the surrounding area and why the streets are always flooded. But now I know. Also you should do a video about the most underdeveloped neighborhoods and the city’s plan to redevelop them. One well known example being Willets Point in Queens, aka: The Iron Triangle. It’s that neighborhood that’s filled with Auto Shops and Junkyards located right across Seaver Way from Citi Field, which like The Hole has barely paved streets, some without sidewalks and where flooding is common due to limited or a lack of sewer connections.

I grew up in Ridgewood, in the '60s and '70s. At that time Ridgewood spilled into Brooklyn, and so even though I lived in Brooklyn (just west of Irving Av) I went to school in Queens. As you walked from Kings to Queens you'd see "Cooper St" become "Cooper Ave". Of course, back then each of the boroughs had distinctly-colored street signs. Just as Manhattan signs were the signature gold, B'kly sign were black with white lettering, Queens' were white with blue lettering.
Ironically, several years and two (Brooklyn) homes later, I worked one college summer in the CityLine Area of Brookly/Queens, on Liberty Ave, near Conduit Blvd ...

This is cool. I’m in Rego park now and overlook Flushing Meadow Park. A few years back when I was in Forest Hills there was quite a bit of flooding by the drains after a rainfall. There’s an old map in my former building that calls Forest Hills as Long Island. The area wasn’t very developed when the building went up. Forest Hills Gardens wasn’t developed yet. It was still ‘country’. I find it all amazing how recent this all is.

As someone who currently lives on the Brooklyn Queens Border - I think that first division line shown at (0:40) is actually very accurate; when I first moved to this area and was walking down the vertical streets I immediately noticed the architecture change from duplex 2-family units, terraced townhomes & semi-detatched townhomes into low-rise tenements and apartment buildings when crossing over Cypress Ave.
Above Cypress, there are fewer people, more cars, more families. Below Cypress there are more (and younger) people around, more businesses (especially nightlife), and most of all, much more noise! You really notice the difference in vibe the moment you cross over.

Slight correction: at 6:10 you mention Bay Ridge-95th St. not being in Bay Ridge. While maps may still define the borders of Bay Ridge in the way depicted, anybody who lives in Bay Ridge will tell you that the entire region bounded by the Belt and the expressway is considered Bay Ridge. Historically, Fort Hamilton was it's own neighborhood, but that distinction has all but faded. "Fort Hamilton" now only refers to the literal military base, at least colloquially.

I grew up right next to ‘The Hole’. I don’t know if this is accurate, but I had been told that the jewel streets were once part of Queens but were eventually given to Brooklyn, which could be why the border isn’t a straight line across Conduit Ave./Blvd. from one end of 75th street to the other end. Ruby St. b/w the Conduit & Blake Ave. also has 75th St. signage and the houses have hyphenated house numbers like the homes in Queens.

So about living in a Queens zip code (or was that a Brooklyn one)…zip codes don’t always reflect where you actually live, they tell what post office serves you.
Here in Central New York (for those of you who think anything north of Yonkers is upstate), parts of the Town of DeWitt are served by a Syracuse post office, and have a Syracuse zip code. Other parts of DeWitt are served by the East Syracuse post office, and have an East Syracuse zip code. And Jamesville-DeWitt High School, which is also in DeWitt, is served by the Fayetteville post office, and has a Fayetteville zip code.
So yeah…municipal borders and zip code borders aren’t always the same.

It was easier when each borough had its street signs different colors, queens was white with blue letters and Brooklyn had black with white letters, all changed in the 80s with the green with white letters everywhere. The google maps issue is actually Google maps being wrong. The problem is the data is pulled from algorithms, rather than being hand-drawn, so occasionally you will get slightly incorrect borders. This actually almost cause a war in South America once. If you found government documents showing the borders, those are what would be considered official and used in legal scenarios, so those are the ones which would be technically correct, because if it came down to the law, those are what would be referenced. Hope this helps.

    • @Hypestrike1
      @Hypestrike1 4 місяці тому

We have the 1847 Rural Cemetery Act to thank for that.
Towards the middle of the 19th Century, burial grounds in Manhattan were pretty much full. Establishing new ones was out of the question for the still growing city (not to mention the health problems arising from the smaller overcrowded churchyards), so the New York Legislature implemented a new law that banned burials within Manhattan, but at the same time allowed religious organizations and cemetery corporations to establish new cemeteries outside the island.
Large areas of Brooklyn and Queens were rural farmland at the time, and the large tracts of land that were available in conjunction with the proximity to Manhattan made them ideal locations for cemeteries.
The anomaly of the Brooklyn-Queens border comes into the story when individual private cemeteries, which were property tax-exempt, were regulated to occupy only a certain amount of land, which would naturally restrict their profitability as they filled up.
On the other hand, if a cemetery straddled the border between Kings and Queens counties, it could occupy twice as much land, increasing its profitability whilst also remaining property tax-exempt.
It was a very smart idea.

When New York City was formed we are literally one rock the island of long island covered with miles of ice after the Ice Age Queens became the terminal meringue the edge Of the big rock we call Long Island which is actually one huge rock and Brooklyn Queens Nassau County and Suffolk are all connected always have been always will be one big rock covered with ice which melted I made the island Newtown Creek and the East River are not rivers or bodies of water at all they are estuaries where freshwater and saltwater mix which we turned into where we collect run off when it rains all of the water that washes all of the contaminants on our rolls on our streets we then route there Nassau County puts them in the stump a big dirt hole some people use septic tanks we use the East River and New South Creek they are full completely cemented in and no longer connect to anything so they basically pulled but to answer you Brooklyn and Queens are on the island of Long Island and we are one

You said all of that to say ‘we’re all one’. Yes, as a land mass. But Brooklyn, Queens and LI are still separate entities

Stupid video. Neether Google nor the census map establishes a border. The border is a matter of public record, and every surveyor knows where the border is. Do your homework CORRECTLY.

Now do the Queen & Nassau Borders next. Or as I like to call it, “W. Queens & E. Queens” Borders.
