- Well...I mean I can't love all the heroes. Highlander is probably my most disliked of all the Vikings, and frankly it shouldn't be that way. What's wrong with him? ...I'm not 100% sure. He feels clunky...his offensive stance and defensive shift feels weird...and...I suck with him.

A really good Highlander is scary, but they are really rare.
I think the reason we struggle against these good highlanders is because since they are so rare we don’t fight them often. So when we see one we don’t know what to do.

100% Freeze's Highlander video really left a bitter taste in my mouth as a Highlander main, I really like how Raven doesn't act like his view is objective fact, and understands people will have different opinions and he respects them for it, unlike a certain someone, which allows for a better discussion to take place. This kind of humility is what we need more of in this community. Everyone is far too up their own rear end to act this maturely about opinions on a hero. So while I may not agree with Raven's opinion, I respect him for putting it out there in a well spoken, civil manner to encourage discussion in the comments.

Freezes if shown through his lens of absolute Hatred for highlander, as in his opinion where he thinks the hero should just be left behind and not fixed in any way. Raven on the other hand talks about how they could maybe fix him and make him a hero more connected with the game of now.
@@BoltYT_ I actually kind of agree with that... I feel like shoulder bash is strong as heck as is, especially since its follows will be better soon. Wardens weaknesses lie elsewhere honestly (unless you mean making side-sb act more like a dodge attack.)
I feel the main appeal of Highlander is that he has some of the most in-depth tech of any For Honor character. It is just too much fun watching top-level Highlander players that can wave-dash in OS, shorten stance transition with the OS taunt of all things, and completely demolish someone the second they run out of stamina. He’s hard to get into, rough around the edges, and has gotten pretty harshly power-crept over the years, but he’s pretty technical, and that’s why a lot of his higher-level players like him.
As a LONG time highlander main, I can respectfully see where this perception comes from, but have to disagree. When you really know how to use him and go from stance to stance, you aren't sacrificing anything, you're just swapping tool sets. In defensive you have trade capabilities, crushing counters, ability to block and guard break, but no real neutral pressure which is why, like Shaolin, you're really just looking for a flow to the other stance. To be one of the "offensive stance gods" you really just learn how to use the tools he has there for defense. His lights keep frame advantage, are enhanced, and can be used to stuff most attempts to knock you out of the stance. His dodge recoveries are crazy. Kick after dodge is quick enough to be guaranteed if you dodge any heavy finisher, many chain heavies and bashes, or if you back dodge and they dodge forward to keep close to you. His role is to have a very high skill ceiling among the cast. He has every tool he needs to answer every hero somewhere in his kit, but he requires good reads and extra practice to comfortably access them all as needed.
I think the frustration is just like you said though. He looks cool. He has a big meaty weapon, but I think this attracts players who are looking for more of a shugoki or hitokiri play style, and he just isn't that, but those of us who learned him never want to see his kit stripped down like that.
I think his second testing grounds hit the sweet spot though for what he needs. In the live version he has no roll catch in offensive, no heavy guard break punish, and throwing a kick/grab mixup can be option-selected with a dodge attack by literally every character. I think that rework fixed everything he needed without being overturned, and I can't wait for the next title update JC said it's coming with to finally have those gaps in his kit addressed. Also feintable kick, yay.

he doesnt actually feel sluggish when you get good with him, and him being difficult to pick up is exactly what makes him a good character
personally i would rather a bigger learning curve between each character than what we usually get

So many people say “highlander is low iq” and ive learned many characters and wonder.. so who is hard then? Who is so much harder to learn than highlander i dont get it

4:30 the taunt is really good to scare your opponent into reacting because it looks like you're about to kick. Also raven I noticed with your gameplay you weren't using the soft feint kick into grab which is one of the best moves in his kit which would've caught almost every dodge people were doing against you.
In my opinion, highlander is a cool character, but not easy to master I think people give highlander a hard time not because they hate him but because they wish they could use highlander better

Highlander is probably the only remaining relic of the past, from a time when every hero felt different. He is also one of the most difficult heroes to master. His playstyle and kit are genuinely interesting and different, which is one of the reasons why he went through so many testing grounds. Highlander players won't accept another watered-down rework.
It's okay if many people do not like highlander. Everyone does not have to. Similarly, highlander does not have to be another watered-down, easy-to-pick hero.
The issue with buffing defensive stance is he’s even more insufferable to fight as a noob.
I feel you, Raven. I picked up Highlander lately and at first I struggled massively. People will just hit you out of your offensive stance and if you just picked him up thats pretty frustrating. To this point I learned kinda how he works but tbh he never is my go to Character. And then there are these God tier highlanders just shredding your health down and you are like "Jeez, when do I unlock that skill?".
Oh, btw. I really like your story for Aaran the Ashen. And it inspired me to write my own little "backgroundstory" for my highlander ^^

9:31 three reasons ( aside from the obvious tricking the opponent ) one is the range on the grab is longer but has more of a wind up, two is sort of like choosing the level of bash on a warden that delay on when it goes out trips people up while giving you that split second to decide at the cost of more stamina. Threes is a bit jank but that forward movement that the kick doesn’t have can save you some times
One very deceptive thing is the range on his sword is more then you think( though not disjointed hitboxes

I appreciate this video. Highlander is clunky. You have to use all these techs to make him feel anywhere close to other heros in terms of viability, but even then youre at a disadvantage. Still love playing the hero.

As your average casual, I love playing Highlander. Tricky to yes but impossible, not really. I I do get my butt smack against Highlander's weird timing but have gotten somewhat better. It is definitely more of the timing than anything but could speed up the attack in areas.
The only thing I hate about Highlander is that he doesn't have access to Shugoki's t4 feat, Staggering Blow.

He doesn't really feel that bad once you actually get good with him, he feels quite smooth, the only reason you're feeling that its "slow or dragging something that shouldn't be a sword" is because your using neutral heavies, which are pretty slow on all characters, but really for HL because his attack speed was never really updated since his dmg nerf from ages ago, same reason he can't heavy off of GB is because they used to do like 45 dmg.
I more or less feel the same way about highlander. He does feel a lil sluggish to play as and he is a Pain in the ass to fight against. I manly play against bots and there are few times when a bot kills me in a 1v1 situation. But when that does happen. 99% of the time its a Highlander bot. Honestly the most fun I have when playing Highlander is with my support Highlander who uses his Attack boosting Aura and his Healing Aura(I havent played For Honor in a lil while so I forgot the name of the feats) while playing the Bagpipe emotes kinda like a big scottish bard.
I rarely ever see a genuinely good Highlander
It’s mostly light spam, which sucks for me because my internet is ass and I’m on 30 FPS, light spam is my undoing
Highlander is one of those heroes who I both like to play yet also hate to fight against. I understand there is a learning curve to him in terms of mastering every bit of his moveset, but there's times where I rarely ever go into my offensive and just abuse my hyper armor heavies with the Celtic Curse mixup. I feel like his hitstun at times is ridiculous because when I get his by either his Celtic Curse attacks or even his lights, he follows up with that finisher heavy and no matter what I do I can't ever seen to counter it.
I find it funny that there is a lot of similar statements between Charge Blade in Monster Hunter World/ Rise and Highlander in For Honor. Both swap between an offensive and defensive stance. Both have shorthand ways to get to offensive. Both even have powerful combos that can do big damage. The thing that makes them different (aside from gameplay strategy), is the charge Blade also has easy ways back into defense as part of attacking. You can go from the big weapon form directly to sword and board with a combo move, which also charges up some of your big damage.
My story with highlander is pretty straightforward. When I was a newbie at the game I did not touch this hero because he seemed way too wonky and I was enjoying berzerker and kensei and orochi, raider (all the common picks) more.
Then when I was around rep 100, I took on me to push every single herl to rep 1 at least to learn their moveset and be able to counter them better. Highlander was a PAIN. Ways too complexe, I could not get it right, it was the most painfull rep I ever had (I play all types of game modes).
I never touched him again until rep 270 or something, when I completely switched to viking for my main faction and all of them were above rep 10 to 40 except HL. It was more pain, pain, and pain. My skill braket was much higher and I was unable to win à single duel so I aimed for breach and dom for my team to carry me and give me some space to try new mixup and build muscle memory.
Then I was rep 8 and I finally started to be able to handle myself in 1v1. This was the moment they announced his rework funny enough. I piped up some crates like I do every new rep 8, made a build with some perks for each load out, and then I just stoped playing him with relief because those rep where a real stretch at the end of the day and I wanted to relax and wait for the rework.
I played the TG a little bit but I was not feeling getting back to HL seriously especially since he was gonna get a rework (as you may know, it has been some time since the first TG now)
In the meantime I was reping my others vikings and lot of fun and all but when they finally said the rework was gon a come, I picked him up again like a week ago, and I am having a BLAST. it's like all these hardship got me tired of him although I got it right finally, and now I understand finally what he can or cannot do, how to gank, how to anti gank, how to pressure people to hell with offensive form, this is the only hero I got so long to be able to toy with my opponent, but it came in the end. Sure I'm still floppy on wavedash but Idc because it will be removed, but other than that my only complain is stamina which will be fixed soon. All what they add is welcome but HL playstyle is super fun in the end and you can litterally make people crazy, he is one of the hero I make people rage quit the most, which says something about him.
So my point is, Highlander is not a hero like hitokiri, which give quick burst of satisfaction but bore you as fast. He is more like something you learn to enjoy. Hito would be a cocktail with a lot of sugar and highlander would be a good scotch, sour for rookies, but deliciously smokey for whiskey enjoyers.
I'm rep 11 so far and I want to push it further,because I learn everyday and it get better and better
I think highlander is a tad clunky. Maybe if they gave him a weapom that corresponds with his body and weight instead of something really heavy and makes it hard to control. Perhaps also improve the defense mechanics as well. Moreover, enjoyed your thoughts raven

thing is a historically accurate greatsword of that size would weigh around 4 pounds as it is actually on the smaller side of the spectrum of greatswords where it could pass as a very big longsword. so no highlander doesnt need a different weapon to be less clunky

Okay Raven I suppose your points stand pretty firmly, but that's only because you may have not been exposed to the sheer magic and beaty (and badassery) of Highlander Community.

As a rep 75 highlander I can see maybe why you don't like him. Of course I disagree with a lot of what you said which is also fine, I think once you get offensive stance down it feels the opposite of clunky and i also agree he needs more in defensive stance. The getting rid of grab is a big no no for me it's his only gank tool and looks cool as shit also.

Highlander main here, I agree with most of things that you pointed out with him feeling sluggish and whatnot as he most definitely does, the sprint speed especially is just laughable. As for the clunkiness of his moveset in general, I personally like to think of a lot of his moves as building up momentum. Although he certainly doesn’t use his Ultra-Claymore like a standard Greatsword, he somewhat shares the standard need to keep your momentum going with your swings. Which, makes me all the more sad that his rework has been stuck in testing ground hell for the last little while as it almost perfectly represented that momentum aspect that I love. The ability to flow from your standard heavy finishers to a zone, then back to your heavies immediately was just amazing. Does he need more actual moves&combos in general? Absolutely. Like for instance, a heavy into light combo would be fantastic for him, and someone like Warden as well. With offensive stance however, all that stuff you could be doing with the momentum is kind of just tossed out the window, in favor of becoming orange. Now, while Offensive can be a useful tool it just adds to the general clunkiness of Highlander with the fact that you can hardly flow into it from most of his different combos or moves, if they just combined the Offensive form with defensive and gave him more to work with altogether instead of having two incomplete halves I feel like he’d work much better.
I agree. Aesthetically and lore-wise, Highlander is awesome, but his moveset is clunky. In fact, my stance and opinions on Highlander is pretty much the same as yours
I will say that the clunkiness never really bugged me that much(though I'm not against smoothing it out as it is still very exaggerated), since that's how I've sort of felt using a claymore. Well, a training version anyway. Compared to other "warswords", it does feel a bit unwieldy. Least to me, despite doing semi well with it in sparring. I will say that I think the defensive stance needs some reworking to be more viable and add more variety to playstyles.
I know he's Highlander and it's his soul, but I don't like that I can't launch heavy after a gard break, I tried to do unblockable heavy in offensive stance but it's still too slow...

4:03 Raven, ZhanHu's weapon is XiuChunDao/绣春刀 from historical perspective. But they're actually using MiaoDao/苗刀 and its stance, usage in his executions and in-game.
And also... I'm a highlander main myself, the point I like about him is just those you belittled, Why his clunky? Because many players don't know how to fast flow from defense to offense with him, his every move in defensive stance except finishers can flow into offensive stance, you need to catch every chance to offense, and then just like shaolin, you can access any move in other stance. Use the defense stance moves time to time for mix.
In addition, Highlander is the few characters who have big damage ranged hyper armor attack and dodge recovery at the same time in for honor (and even a special guard swtich recovery in OS). Most of his true features are never mentioned in his move table nor tutorial. His combine of hyper armor, big damage and mobility make him a monster in team fights if you played correct. His grab makes him can let someone hit the floor when they are in revenge and bullying your teammate (grab em when they are in attack recovery).
P.S. The giant sword feelings brought out from dark souls and manga berserk. GB no heavy still a pain in the ass... And a female highlander is super welcomed to me! Scottish mommy hoorra!
The lander is a character who have many imperfections, so do I. He's imperfections are just like my honest reflection, that's why I love the guy.

That’s why i stopped using him he’s too slow with a weapon that isn’t as heavy as he portrays it to be.
I played back in beta/launch and recently have returned to the game and I think the issue you have is two fold. Highlander got treated less like a heavy in lore/hype, but when they designed him he is a hybrid at the end of the day. Which is why if you're going to compare him to Heavy characters I don't think it's fair to Highlander or the heavies. Highlander is a hybrid, he should require a higher skill floor and a unique tech based playstyle, just like how heavies should have simple kits designed to stall and trade

Hl is a good character precisely because hes hard to learn, its his charm. Im a rep 80 hl and i still learn new stuff from him pretty much mostly every match. To play him you cant just use the 2 stances like they are seperate rigid playstyles, like medjay. You have to combine them constantly and knoe how to flow between them, whcih hes not sluggish at all.
You said you dont knoe what hes supposed to be. In gameplay hes all about being patient and knowing when the right time to strike with your offensive heavies. Or counter strike with the kick.

Highlander is pretty much the opposite of what I like. I love feminine beauty, elegance, and grace and when that's mixed with martial prowess it is a killer combination. It is why I love Nuxia, Peacekeeper, and Nobushi, and even female Zhanhu. Speaking of which can't wait for the Nuxia video!
i personally love highlander, when you fight good he just flows so cool, but he attacks too slow sometimes, basically anyone can counter his offensive stance with a light at any moment. I really don't like the hyper amour maniac playstyle, but in this meta its almost needed or he isn't really all that viable.
HL is fun for me, because I like challenges and with him.... I do have that kind of challenge
but I think, even HL mains really want HL to shine again

**HL rework:**
DEF stance:
light attacks- first light will be as we know it, but second light will be undodgable
heavy attacks are alright, I wouldn't change them
dodges- would have that crushing thing like kensei or Verengian has and ofcorse you can dodge attack from it
OFFENSIVE stance:
I would change, that you don't have to hold right button on your mouse, idk what console players hold :D (it's like with medjay)
his kick would be faintable, but not his grab because that would look meh in my opinion XD
his softfaints would be from heavy to grab and kick and yes, you can still faint the kick
I know there would be some orochis that will dodge attack you or others with undodgable attacks, so in his offensive stance he will have hyper armor just to take one hit, after HL takes hit, his hyper armor will be gone, until you get in to an offensive stance again (it's hard to explain, so I will say it easier, HL goes to his Offensive stance and gains his hyper armor, after he takes hit, his HA will be gone until you get in to the offensive stance again, so HA gone, get in to a DEF stance and back to offensive stance to obtain HA again)

Having played highlander and loving how he feels (aside from the stance switching speed ) i find hes a character of extremes and being able to flip from one to the other on a dime ( basically makes my adhd go brrr) like his stance i find i have to go hyper aggressive or hyper defensive, push advantage hard
To be honest I think a female highlander would be cool because I find it easier to customize characters as females.
Well just be glad this game doesn't have 'The Quickening'... by which I mean the sequel to the Highlander movie.
Genuinely, i just hate highlander in general. I cannot stand the armor, i think it only looks good in the hero skin. I really don’t like playing it, it feels like your only attacks are lights and they really lean into that because they’re so unnaturally fast. Fighting him is even worse in my opinion, people just light spam and the kick is so fast and the soft feint from kick to grab feels impossible to dodge. Plus the hitstun drives me crazy. Every time i get hit by one attack, it doesn’t let me block or parry any follow ups and i have no idea why, maybe that’s just my game though. But that’s just all my crappy opinion, My top reps are rep 30 Warmonger, rep 13 Warden and rep 9 Lawbringer. In my opinion, they all have stuff that makes them interesting and unique but highlander just feels like lights and bashes and a thirty minute staring contest.

As a highlander main I can't even disagree with you. I love the character, but he was designed for a version of the game that doesn't exist anymore. He was supposed to be slow, thought out hit like a truck. They made the game more about speed, nerf his damage hard. I don't feel like he really fits in.
I like highlander both because he’s mechanically unique and because he hits hard and it feels big and heavy. He might be slow and clunky but he feels unstoppable when you trade with hyper armor and throw people to the ground. And as for him feeling clunky and like a barbarian I think a big boy who lives off the land would be more brutish than strategic, besides he doesn’t just go crazy with a sword he actually does pretty good movements with it and yes it’s overly heavy but he at least knows how it works as if he’s been using it but hasn’t had a proper education in technique and such which again I think makes sense if he is more of a survivalist out in the wild compared to a trained soldier like a knight would be

Ever since I joined for honor highlander feels so weak to play for me personally but annoying strong to fight against now anytime i play him i just get dominated but when im against them i just have no ability to defend against their attacks and its not that i cant parry i just find their moveset to how to put this oppressive

I would say I'm pretty good at Highlander in which case I disagree with the entire video until Raven mentioned female Highlander which I agree wholeheartedly.
I mean I preferred when For Honor was historically 'accurate' so the idea of a seeing a male Nobushi or a female Centurion is weird.
But since we abandoned historical accuracy it doesn't make sense to gender lock anymore...at least to me.
Plus I mean when we can switch the skin tones of every character it makes even less sense.
As for Highlander I do feel like his second light is way to fast animation wise,I get it's to balance for the slow heavy but it looks off to me

A flamberge isn't a type of sword but type of blade. The wavy blade pattern wasn't exclusive to just longswords as some raipiers had some too. Plus the zweihander is probably just the more iconic kind of sword to have the flamberge style blade.

Highlander main here , if you wanna play highlander well , you need to in my opinion , use a controller ! It makes it much much easier to stay in and out of offensive stance . You need a lot of game knowledge to play highlander and make hard reads . I love him the way he is to be honest , but I understand both sides

Highlander is a character that i believe needs a full rework. The whole defensive and offensive style can stay, but like Raven says, he feels too clunky. A rework to make him look more like he knows what hes doing with the claymore would be a good first step, and not just a barbarian swinging around some metal.

hahaha the female highlander would be so cool
I hate Highlander's because they feel like a far less predictable Hitokiri, with the grabbing/kicking of a Centurion. Highlander is in my top 3 most hated, tbh,
While this is progressively becoming harder to do in For Honor, when I lose, I want it to be because of a lack of skill and not because of game mechanics. Hyper Armor is one of the game mechanics I absolutely hate because it's like fighting a Havel build in Dark Souls 1 while using a normal dex or strength build. You can lay into them, but they hit harder and ignore your attacks. Sure, you can turtle, but Highlander has an obnoxious amount of soft-feint attacks, making it a pain to turtle, too.
I hate him so much!!! He doesn’t use his weapon effectively at all and he wears no armor and has more hyper armor than Lawbringer!
Tbh in my opinion highlander is a bs character as most of the time all you see is the ones that do only light but the fact is the lights also get hyper armour half the time or are way too quick to deal with so you can't react to them and by the time they have lost lal their stamina all your health is gone and your dead, i think there needs to be more stamina drain on him, remove the grab and make it so that you can go into his different stances easier but get rid of his hyper armour. (Also i think this should be for all characters but i think specifically for heavys at the end of the attack you should get hyper armour as the amount of times where ive been nearly hitting people with a heavy and they do an unreachable light to slap me out of it is bs as they always have hyper armour on that attack or their attacks are garented for some bs reason, and while i do like multiple full blocks too, i think instantly being able to go into it like aramusha and VG with no penelties is shit design as with BP and conc you need at least 100-200ms of time to get into the full guard which is quite easy to be hit through (unless your a god at bp and manage to flip the guy at the last ms)
One thing I really hate about highlander is one question, why in Odin beard did ubisoft even MAKE HIM!?!? He makes me so angry 😡 to fight
As a highlander main I have a few words
Number 1 if a character fits every one's cup of tea as you put it then there is no character it's fine if you don't like him but don't suggest changes to the character just to fit what you like.(except for female highlander I agree on that brother🤝)
2 why are you complaining about someone being good with who they main idk it seems off to me
3 if you don't like his flow that's fine, I do and you don't have to like him
4 he doesn't really trade offense and defense he does kinda but dodging is his defense (quick canceling into defensive stance is also what he can do)
5 if you can't do what high level landers do just call me I can help:)
6 why don't u like his grab it's a horrible move that's pretty cool
Side note highlander rework sucks major ass, please just give him heavy on gb. If you want to know more about what I would do to highlander with a rework then ask but this comment is getting plenty long.

I agree with this comment. Every character does not have to fit everyone's taste. Suggesting changes like this is hilarious.
Highlander is one of my highest rep viking and the first one to get to legendary teir. I had trouble using him at times as well because he'll either be not so good or too good and its a weird mix feeling. His fashion as well to me is top tier in comparison to other vikings and why I've used him so much. And lastly, Raven now sees the BS gender-locking for each new character release? This has been a very tiresome thing we can all agree on because it's been 4 years which is about half the game's life cycle and they have given way too many excuses not to deliver. I wish this could be applied to Warmonger, Varangian, Etc. To sum this all up, Ubi needs to STOP making new heroes and fix the current problems with the recent and old ones. Give most of them alternative body types, make them balanced, and of course give them new good sets like they have done before since the Heresy season started. This will help reduce down the negative reputation and breath for a moment otherwise risk losing most of your playerbase in the future.
...What do you mean I now see the BS gender-locking? I was making a joke about how I'd enjoy seeing a female highlander. I'm not saying it's a necessity for all heroes everywhere. I couldn't care less honestly who they gender lock. It doesn't hurt the game for me.
@@RavenKnightYT No it's not a main problem. But going back and fixing the balancing problems with the current heroes will help alot more than it would releasing more to where the new ones are either broken or overpowered. And certain other characters like the Highlander and Lawbringer has been through a testing ground mess. My worry for this hero is the way he's going to turn out like Lawbringer and conqueror rework that left unfinished and detours players from using them as much. These characters have minor issues that just needs fixing but reworking them sometimes leaves them as a hallowed shell as they were beforehand.

He sucks now I’ve been playing him for years and I’m rep 80 with him this new “rework” made him even worse in my eyes I’m a rep 1565 overall
