Every now and then the usually conservative Fender designers kick loose and decide to hot-rod one of their standard models to add a little glitz and glamour - After all when everyone else is saying that the design of the original Telecaster is so perfect that it would be a crime to change it - How can you better the original ...?
The answer of course is not to change it - just to give it a new suit or a new haircut, which I beleive is what Fender have done with the new Blacktop series - inside it's still the great instrument that it used to be, yet on the outside it's had a contemporary make over to bring it up to date - so just who was it that said you can't play heavy Metal on a Telecaster ... ?
The Blacktop Telecaster HH is a no-nonsense dual-Humbucker Tele that'll impress the hell out of you without breaking the bank. Twin Vintage-style Fender Blacktop Alnico humbucking pickups deliver the hot high-gain power of today's most aggressive sounds. Other distinctive touches include skirted black amp knobs, a reversed control plate and a vintage-style hard-tail bridge with six grooved saddles for optimum string alignment. The Blacktop Telecaster HH features include an Alder body, Rosewood 9.5"-radius fretboard, 22 medium jumbo frets, a gloss urethane finish, and Nickel/Chrome hardware.
I got a blacktop HH black on black two months ago and it has reignited my love of playing. It really is a fun guitar to play. It feels and plays like a guitar three times its price. great fun.
I always come back to this series of demos because Damon is just a beast when it comes to putting a rig thru its paces and the "Blacktop" line is one of the best Fender has come out with this decade (imho)!
Not a huge fan of the amp but it's great to see someone actually dig in and play some slightly heavier sounds with this guitar and showcase the versatility a bit. I'm totally going to pick up an American Standard Tele HH thanks to this demo. Well done.
Love that you played full open chords. Many reviews dont show that. You play great by the way
You are so lucky to work in a place like that, with such a huge number of guitars surrounding you!
Massive range of tones! This is a ridiculously good value guitar...
Ive been wanting a Tele and this just about convinces me, Now to go out and play one of these Blacktops!
I LOVE the twangy sound from the bottom humbucker!
Oh goooood, I just played one of these today. It was fantastic. Through the Boss Blues Distortion pedal, it sounded just fantastic.
im getting it for my birthday in a month! im soo excited!!!!
I've had this guitar for a couple years. It's a pretty decent value. I recommend lowering the pickup height as the pickups are really hot. Lowering them has given the tone some more clarity and brightness.
Actually the reason for the reversed controls is mainly for volume swell use, and not "hitting it while strumming". The volume knob it easier to reach this way. Very nice feature, and a very good demo.
best youtube reviews hands down!
Im sold..I have to buy this asap!
Finally, someone did a demo of a Telecaster with heavy overdrive/gain to get a metal sound out of it's humbuckers. Humbuckers are traditionally used for METAL playing sound and style. I cant tell you how much shit I always get from all the other commentors when I suggest playing any of these Telecasters equipped with one or even two humbuckers to have someone dial in a heavily overdriven tone. For all of you out there that usually give me shit over that;THIS demo is what i've been talking about!
I've loved Telecasters for the longest time, but I would have had to send it for extensive modification to fit humbuckers in because I play heavy music. Then Jim Root of Slipknot started using Teles with humbuckers and eventually released and thought I'd get his signature series, but I am against signature series lol. Then this came out and IT IS SUCH A BLESSING.
That store is paradise.
I used to love strats only before, but after seeing this Im beginning to love teles ^_^
It is also beyond me why people insist on demoing guitars with so much distortion - we want to hear how the GUITAR sounds, NOT the AMP. Please just go through the various attributes of the guitar with a clean amp setting (no effects). THEN put on some distortion and do the whole process again, for those who may be interested. Thanks :)
Isn't that what he did?
Oh your one of those guys this isn’t 1957 anymore FUCK CLEAN
oooooh I have this and it's MAGNIFICENT! and the candy-apple red definitely what's up!!!!
I Need one now, love it. sounds incredible.Great demo.
Whoever got that axe scored bigtime!
that axe is a beast. i'm seriously considering trading my hotrails equipped tele in on it. it plays AMAZINGLY well.
I got the same one it Rocks
im glad i have one
Silver or black, i cant deside. But i WILL get this guitar! im in love
Maaan, that guitar sounds great!
Love this, got a second hand one for $500 AUD. Sounds very Iron Maiden , ACDC. Makes me laugh while playing it. It's so over the top in a great way. This burns and sears.
Really nice shop, and really good informative video !
Thanks
I dont understand how this can have any dislikes
i got this and its the best guitar I've played
I've played this guitar and loved it! I loved the Pick-Ups. I kinda preferred it to the Fender Telecaster Deluxe. Don't take my word for it since I have no idea about how well built either model is to how long it will last but non the less great guitar :O
best demo of this guitar :)
It's interesting that he is using a Fender G-DEC modeling amplifier to show the tones one can get with this Telecaster. I would prefer he used a regular Fender tube amp that wouldn't color the sound as much.
I hate fender for stopping the production of this guitar !!!
They now have the Fender Standard Telecasater HH....essentially the same guitar with the dual humbuckers and it has a coil split in the bridge
This guitar fits!! with everything!!! it rocks!! :D
this is so good, i'm looking to buy one, i like to play a range of jazz and punk rock type. so so so convincing
nice guitar demo!
im sold! i want that guitar! good demo!
thanks for doin this guys... I wasn't sure if it could handle metal tones until now :) ugh, red or silver... dilema!!!
Actually Fender is selling one of it's 60thTele-versary Telecasters with the TV Jones pickups. I was in shock when I saw one at Buddy Rogers music the other day since normally you can only get these pickups in a Gretch Reverend Horton Heat model. It would be great to have in a Tele since the Gretch's are so big and bulky.
Owned this Tele Blacktop, diagonal selector is better IMHO still. Haven't got used to tele one, yet.
Very good guitar, comfortable, easy to play, I prefer the Black on Black with a maple neck but It's a very nice guitar. Good demos as well, reasonable player. Might finally go get myself one.....
That was a great review. I'm wondering if it's possible to replace another white pickguard on it.
i want this telecaster for my birthday =)
i neeeeedddd iiiiittttt
A telecaster with humbuckers is an interesting concept. Listen to the FMT models. But I don't think it's going to satisfy someone who likes the normal Tele tone or the normal Gibson tone. A normal Tele or Strat can get reasonably crunchy but it's a brighter sort of crunch.
Want to go to this shop so badly:) need this Fender for my birthday dieing for it-_-
you should look at TV Jones humbuckers, specifically the powertron and powertron plus.
I have this guitar for 3 months and half and I luv it is beautiful guitar i chose this color candy apple red with rosewood fretboard I cant I'm geting a fender American Standard or deluxe Stratocaster
I like your Tennessee shirt... I live in the Knoxville area..
I wonder if he can play the Osbourn's (?) "Rocky Top?" Love that song.
I was looking to see if anyone else noticed his shirt!
Damon, I'm looking for a Tele and here are my players so far. The New Road Worn Tele, Fender Special Edition Custom Tele Spalted,
Classic Series 72 Tele Deluxe, and the one your playing in this video the Blacktop HH. But the Blacktop seems to have a more LP feel to it vs the 2 HB in the 72 Deluxe. Will be used to play Rock & Blues.
I got one of these in 2011. I should have kept it but I thought it sounded too much like a Gibson. I already had an sg and les Paul.
I luv my fender blacktop telecaster HH candy Apple red with rosewood fretboard upgrade pickups with Seymour Duncan 59 neck pickups and JB pickups
@DeltyBoy Well, it has humbuckers, which is half the job done. I guess what you need is just to tweak the tone well enough to reach that level of distortion. Or if you have an extra hundred quid lying around, change the pickups to active ones.
I have one just like it that my grandpa built except the dials are different.
D --> Not going to lie... this guitar has one of the best clean sounds I have ever heard on any tone setting. The distortion was a bit to chunky for me though, but this guitar is way to se%y 100king and it isn't that costly either.
My main ax is a grey blacktop I got it cuz a miss my 70s deluxe that needed a fret job
@2tonesg believe me...just the way you feel it!
You flip the knobs so you can do volume swells.
The Blacktop Tele doesn't do the classic Tele tones. The Blacktop Strat does the coil split tones. Why don't they give the Tele the same 5 way switch and make it as versatile as the Strat?
Its possible the pickups come ready for you to install a push pull. My chris shiflett tele deluxe does (but only bridge).
Christmas for me.
How would you compare the new Blacktop Tele to the 72 Re-issue Tele Deluxe with the wide-range humbuckers and the Strat style headstock?
this guitar us brilliant, i have one. if i were to get another guitar i think i'd get this again in a different colour
Niiiiiice
you are making a demo of a tele using it like Ibanez or bcreach.what's the point?
My thought exactly.
Well that's the point of this series I think. They're trying to push Fender out of their classic sound. Whether that's a good or bad thing is up to the individuals opinion
*****
more than good i 'd say,but this is a review of a tele,not a demostration of skills
@lucradiste Exactly how I felt and now I'm most likely gonna get this guitar.
I hated telecasters too, but when I knew that my fav solo 'stairway to heaven' was made with one, my view started to change, same with stratos and my eddie van halen style practicing
Please set up this shop in Sheffield PLEASE! ;D
i love that backing track!!! what is it?? :)
On my squire, I can put the distortion down all the way, and still too much. I find I need to invest in one of these.
@lucradiste I was the exact same way....now its the my favorite guitar! :D
I have a fender Blacktop Telecaster is Candy Apple Red with Rosewood Fretboard and Maple neck I put with Seymour Duncan Pickups im gonna change the tuners with locking Tuners
@lucradiste Exactly the same :D
I wish this guitar had the standard Telecaster bridge pickup. I love the sound of it in my Squire (which I found, win!).
I don't feel like the clean tones were bad on the gdec but for this price range I'm a. it confused why he didn't go with a blues jr
Nevada music is an instrument shop in the UK
Well I really love my Standard Tele - but I would like a fatter sound as well and this Blacktop HH sounds like it. Maple fretboard? It would be interesting to see one compared against a Gibson SG - although the cheapest 2PU SG is about £600 against the Fender £450.
I know this an old video but which is better for playing pop punk? the telecaster or the stratocaster? Or could i not go wrong with either one?
Probably the tele, my friend has the strat and it doesn't sound very punk imo
I'd advise either the Tele or Jaguar imo. I've heard both used for punk perfectly. That said though, Tom Delonge uses a strat with a high-gain pickup in the bridge and it sounds perfect for pop-punk so I guess it boils down to whichever you're more comfortable on:)
Connor Minter /\ Used. Nowadays he uses a archtop Epiphone. That one's probably better for the modern emo pop punk. If you want 90's pop punk get a Strat or a Jaguar. If you're going for lead guitar maybe a Tele - but everyone pretty much uses a Les Paul for lead guitar in punk.
From what I've seen in modern pop-punk bands, telecasters are used everywhere:) In my opinion if you're going for a 90s pop-punk sound the strat will look the part but the telecaster will be "fuller-sounding" from what I've experienced:) To be honest, you can't go wrong with the blacktop series:)
Strats have the extra pickup that gives it the dirty heavy metal hard rock edge.
Teles have two pickups giving them a smoother cleaner warmer edge.
Different makes have different sound properties though, the Blacktop editions seem to have that dirty grungy sound if you look for it plus they have all the warmth that comes with a traditional tele and they look fantastic.
what are the mayor differences between the blacktop and the 72 deluxe telecaster??? i´m into the blacktop, but before I decide to buy this guitar, I would like to know some suggestions and comentaries.....thanks :D
i got this one. its really a nice guitar but the bridge is not that good. can you put a t-style humbucker bridge on these guitars ?
That guitar player is smoking good!
Good day!!! I would just want to know what amp you are using... thanks :)
Is this guitar good for playing stuff like iron maiden and BMTH ?
@BigEvilLadia23 im thinking of buying that guitar, (black tho, and maple neck).
is the guitar really that good quality as the reviews say? does it feel like other mexican made guitars?'
thanks
Would this sound like a regular tele if you were to coil split ?
It looks quite heavy. Is it?
@lucradiste yeah i thought that too. i especially hated how the scratchplate just ended in a straight flat line. i used to think it was stupid but now i kinda like it too.
Just got my BT Tele and my Tone knob does not work properly. Goes from no tone to all tone between 9 and 10. Have you seen this issue with any of the ones you all sell??
I just got Dawson Music's last Blacktop HH Tele today hahaha! F
F**k paying almost as much for a U.S. Tele as you would for a Gibson Les Paul Standard, get one of these instead (if you can).
does this guitar stay in tune well
great! fender have made a tele that doesn't sound like a tele... what's the point?
I know the guitar is made in mexico but where are the pick ups from ??
@riseofthefallen301 So you think they should design a whole new body style just because they have decided to put 2 humbuckers into a guitar?
Hey all,
I need some advice quickly - I've got a Squier Telecaster Custom, and I was thinking about buying some blacktop humbuckers to put in it - is there any point in your opinion, or should I save and get some original 72 deluxe humbuckers in there?
@broomiester Go for the red one.
I don't know why I can't get that high gain sound from my Blacktop Strat, I really find it hard to do enharmonics etc. Do you have any recommendations?
Whats a nice amp to play with this guitar?
What's the difference between rosewood and maple?
Hello all, I have a question for anyone who has some more info. on this Tele. I'm in the market and trying to decide between the HH and the more "original" reissue Tele. classic 60's. To put this in some context, I have an EPi ES-335 pro, which I love. Great guitar all around. So, I have the warmth aspect covered. I am more used to the Epiphone/Gibson sound but I wanted to get a Tele for contrast and...because I have always wanted one. I guess, I'm struggling what sound I want with this. I know the HH will be more versatile ( and fatter/warmer) but I do want that something that does contrast the Epi. "If you're going to get a Tele, then get a Tele" mindset. I guess I just don't want to lose too much of that Tele sound. Sorry, about writing a book here. If you're still reading, thanks!
By the way, my style falls in with various styles of Rock, blues, some jazz. From the Stones, Willie Nelson, and 70's funk to Tool and Metallica. I'm kind of all over the place. Anyway, thanks!
I'd say get a standard tele or a strat. I bought one of these blacktop teles this week (I also have a strat and an epiphone Les Paul) and my humble opinion is that while the tele is a really great comfortable instrument, the les Paul humbuckers are warmer and fuller sounding. you will get a better contrast from a classic style tele.
@GiantBlackWomen
i think because its a new design that stratocasters and telecasters have a pair of modern heavy sounding humbuckers, and fender didn't know how audience will receive it so they only made cheaper, mexican made ones. I think if it will be a huge success, i waited for these guitars.:D
