If I was going to buy one I would get the standard.
Im getting the standard
Hey Mr. Braun, love your videos and your telecasters! Personally I'm a huge tele fan and both sound great. If I were to play my good ole' country music which is somethin I love to play since I live in Texas, I would go for the standard (which looks amazing btw) but if I wanted some southern rock I'd reach for the deluxe. Love your videos and keep us updated on Instagram! (arronrayb is my insta account)
The Standard Tele takes it!
Darrell Braun Guitar I love the Standard, but I own a Modern Player. Two reasons, versatility and price. It was the most for my money.
I started out on a tele my dad got me back in 97 he died later that year and it sat in my closet collecting dust along with an old peavey amp, one day a few years later I got the urge to play it and never sat it down .. still own and play that very guitar to this day.
My condolences for your loss.
My story is similar to yours for my strat, my Dad got it some 20-25 years ago when he wanted to get into guitar but never really did.
When he found out that I started getting interested in guitar he bought me an acoustic, and got the strat re-strung. I don’t have the acoustic anymore I sold it for an acoustic that I feel more comfortable, but the strat is still my go to.
Along with the two guitars he gave me his old amp which probably costs some $100-$150 today. It’s a trash amp but it serves me well.
I like your story, way to go man there's no quitters here
Never sell it!

The hero we needed 👍
It's wrong for a Tele to have humbuckers.
That been said, I think I am getting a Tele with humbuckers.
I own the Chris Shiflett Telecaster deluxe and that has humbuckers in it
@@bradleyspinks7922 I never owed a Tele with humbuckers, but I am curious, does it have the Tele twang?
@@ricmel8008 it definitely has that Tele swang to it but is less bright and more warmer sounding, to my ears anyway.
@@bradleyspinks7922 Oh ok, thanks much
AWESOME!!!😁🎈😁🎈😁🎈😁🎈😁🎈😁🎈😁🎈😁🎈
When it comes to clean and slightly dirty tones, nothing ever beats a Fender single coil. So much texture and clarity at the top end.
For clean tones I would definitely say yes the Tele with single coils. For crunch I would say a Strat with single coils.
@@fredriksvard2603 or P90
@@fredriksvard2603 I don't know about that. I think a good Tele single coil bridge pup kicks out high gain better than most humbuckers.
It also has more of a twang sound.
For sure! Single coils are so expressive! The tone😋
"It's like the perfect woman. Does she have the prettiest top, the best curves, the most features? No, but she is reliable, loyal, hardworking, and she has got tone for days..."
Matthew Pettersen My mom heard that because I was playing it out loud and she laughed so hard 😂
I like my women like my guitars - long neck and a good bottom end. :)
most of the time you can tell what kind of women the men prefers by his favorite guitars ;)
What a quote~
Yeah that was kinda yikes
I like the single coils. I’m getting a Squire bullet tele tomorrow can hardly wait . The surf green .
I have one incredible @@@@@@!!!!!!!
great colour choice!
Squire?
I'm a humbucker guy, but how do you argue with that timelessly amazing single coil Tele sound?
Thanks for the great video! Awesome playing as always!
+Andrew Stump Thanks!
Hi!
You could try the Squier Vintage modified Telecaster Deluxe. Search for "HH Telecaster" for some other options. Most will have low output pickups though, which might not be your preference. ☺
Andrew Levister actually jim root's squire is dual passive humbucking pick ups I don't think you need to change it's battery
Andrew Levister also search the J5 squire telecaster you might like it uses humbuckers
Get a deluxe custom like I have. Single coil on the bridge humbucker on the neck pickup. Cant go wrong
The simplicity of the design is what makes it so bloody sexy in many’s eyes. Mine included.
This guy has the most unenthusiastic smile in all his thumbnails and that’s why I click.

Got the deluxe in natural finish and i am so happy with it. It does not reproduce the iconic tele sound and it is obviously "inspired" by the les paul, but it definitely has it's own characteristic sound and delivers the twang! I think it stands out especially in the mix. I like how fender made this les paul thing happen, that bonamassa talked about. The seperated volume and tone knobs make this guitar versatile AF! From Jazz to Hardrock, this thing does its job!
NT is the way to go for a deluxe!
Never thought Id say this but those original pickups kick the tish out of the Humbuckers! They are such singing pickups! IMHO!
Great vid, as usual. Just one small request: Would be great if you always remembered to do clean / no pedal / no OD examples. It lets you clearly distinguish different guitars & pickups, without distortion/OD obscuring and smearing all qualities. (And some of us actually play electric that way!)
Humbuckers are generally built for gain though
@@alistairdimmick2886 Humbuckers were invented _way_ back in the day in order to defeat single coil hum. The penchant for overdriving amps came later, when loud bands of the era started to get used to their quest-for-volume resulting in clipped guitar sounds. And even today, not everyone plays in rock/blues-derived styles; there's _plenty_ of music genres that use clean electric guitar - funk, latin, some country, folk, a lot of pop, jazz and a ton of non-cubby-holeable in-between styles. And they don't always use Fenders. Hey, listen to really early Stones & Beatles - the guitars aren't actually very over-driven, you can distinctly hear the natural tone of each guitar model.
@@pbasswil yes and they are usually used for gain tones. All hail the P bass
Darrell you really do make the best vids on youtube. Your tone comparison presentations cannot be matched!
And now, thanks to you, I have another reason to hunt for guitars; need a telecaster in my arsenal/stable/collection!!
+socialdef3 Thanks man! I appreciate it ☺
Im just not a humbucker fan. I can pick them out of a mix almost everytime. And for the dreaded 60 cycle hum....get a volume pedal and tell your drummer to play louder....lol i much prefer the clarity of single coils however, i do like those firebird style mini humbuckers but theyre kinda like p90's. But that probably has something to do with pots and the lot. Good vid.
Buttered Biskit The Les Paul Deluxe has mini-humbuckers and are a cool bridge between a LP and Tele, but not so easy to find or pay for. Nice to have two volume and two tone controls too.
I bought an 86 Telecaster new and I've played it ever since. I recently purchased the deluxe and it opened up a different world of tones. There's definitely room for both of these axes in my quiver.
Humbucker in neck, single coil in bridge... bigsby trem for extra points with the ladies.
Gotta get myself a woman with tone for days...
Darrell forgot to mention that only Japanese women are like that...and they age magnificiently! I have been married to my Japanese wife for 20 years this year, and she is as beautiful, sexy, wonderful and kind as ever!!
But would it hurt as much if you dropped her?
@@peyotepete6532 If you dropped her you didn;t love her enough in the first place and got complacent. Just be careful she doesn't have an admirer who would be all too keen to pick her up when you drop her cos that m/f will run with it lol.
Uhhmmmm Yoko Ono.....
@@TonySSohal I think Yoko was Korean. I used to pick on the whole race but when I lived in Fayetteville North Carolina near Fort Bragg I saw a lot of Korean women. They don't age well once they get off the boat, if you know what I mean.
Ok, I guess I still do....lol
Honestly i don’t really seem to ever like a humbucker in the neck position. I’m more of a single coil guy through and through but i can really get into a humbucker in the bridge and single in neck. I think that is the best combo of both worlds.
Great vid i always enjoy your thorough demos!
Yeah they get so muddy
Initially the deluxe had me....but there is something profoundly resonating about the sound of those single coils that haunts me even afterwards. Just WOW. Fantastic video
I agree about the single coils. Very much so. I actually have a Deluxe with Shawbuckers. I like it a lot, it sounds great...but it's not that Tele sound that haunts us
I enjoyed the tone of the Deluxe but, that’s not a real Tele.
I own a squire '51, 2005. Tele neck, single coil and humbuckers. A fun guitar to play. Your videos are always spot on and informative. Now I want me a straight classic tele
How can you not like them both. They both have their place. Love it!
And I subbed
I like the Standard Telecaster, it has the sound that I would expect from a Telecaster. 😊 I just finally bought one, I have been playing an Taylor for 30 years so this should be fun stepping into an electric. 👍
Man, something about your videos really encourage me to play the guitar again. It's really been years but I think I'm ready for a new guitar in my life. Probably gonna get this standard American Telecaster! Thanks for the encouragement!
+Frank Alvarado Man, that is great to hear!
You should definitely start playing again ☺
The neck Pickup on that deluxe is outstanding.....the tones you got out of that position were incredible
Ok . So I started to watch this then ended up closing my eyes . You brought out the beauty of both Teles 🤘, need to view this again 👍
I love the traditional Tele setup. In my opinion they got it right the first time. When I want the raw power of humbuckers I reach for a Les Paul which for me... does the dual humbucker thing best. That said, nothing out there can do a Tele like a Tele. The Tele is an awesome instrument and my go to for what it does best. Its simplicity, playability, and tone are astounding.
Since you mentioned grandpa's old lever action 30-30...I'm now subscribed.
As a Les Paul guy who wants a fender, the deluxe is perfection for me..
Evan Iqbal that makes sense, you get the humbuckers you’re used to and you get that single cutaway. But you get the fender feel.
I love the gibson tone and the fender feel, so perfect for me too
I agree, and I’m right there with you. Also with a bad back from my military days, I’m grateful that my tele deluxe is a lot lighter.
Actually, I'd suggest a maple neck single coil tele if you're a Les Paul guy. Put some DiMarzio true velvet pickups in it and you'll love it.
The reason I say is cuz a tele is as close and as far as you can get from a LP. It's like the single coil version of an LP. I used to own a bunch of guitars, but now I just own 3: my goldtop LP, my tobacco burst tele and my acoustic.
If you can get over all that pick guard.
I like to clean sound of the Y2T especially on the high the notes were very clean and smooth, pleasant to the ear.
I have a Squier Tele classic vibe that I bought about two years ago. It's a semi hollow-body.
Interestingly enough I'm getting ready to put a hot rails humbucker on the bridge pickup. I have already replaced the neck pickup with a much better one but I can't remember the name of it but it's gold plated just looks good with that body.
Anyway we'll see what the hot rails do for it, if it doesn't please me I'll just switch back.
Thank you so much Daryl for all your lessons. I've watched so many of them I can't even count. Keep up the good work brother. much love from a Virginia.
There was a time I wanted a les Paul in my teens.. that’s what I felt was the rock stars guitar. Bands I listened to like Interpol, social distortion, Jimmy eat world.. all used them. Then I saw Jim Adkins of Jimmy Eat World began using a telecaster, I was like.. ok move over les I want a tele. This was back in 2013 and now finally in 2020 I finally should be getting one, it’s been ordered and currently on its way to me from the UK. been using a simple cheap but good enough for me Silvertone Stratocaster since 2005. Can’t wait for it to arrive.. it’s a left handed thinline tele, pretty similar to Jim’s guitar but it’s made by revelation guitars. It’s revelation RFT thin line
Congrats
best part of this vid were the note choices on that solo, lovely playing dude
+darkestfugue Thanks man!
The Tele Standard sounds like a Telecaster but the Deluxe enters in a new dimension, tempted by the dark side but with a lot of redemption as it is true to its identity. Great comparison and video Darrell, now you put me in a difficult place especially when my favourite shop has a Tele with soapbars P90s
I like them with a humbucker in the neck but the traditional single in the bridge. Best of both worlds, and a really cool middle position tone.
Yes, the Standard gives the classic Tele tone, but I gotta say I like the "balanced" response of the Deluxe - it sounds more dense and complex in the low end. But I would be more than happy to own either one.
I had an awesome '97 Telecaster California series in a beautiful fiesta red. The 'California Series' was unique in that it had a Stratocaster neck pickup in the neck position. One of the coolest guitars I ever had and i seriously regret getting rid of it. Probably one of my biggest regrets regarding music and guitars was getting rid of that Tele lol.
I've never cared for the look of a Tele and therefore never owned one. Because of your videos and honest display of the capabilities of the species (and a little less bias on my part) I almost feel as if I can't live without one. As for this video....the single coil standard all the way.
Another solid vid! Those Shawbucker 'wide-range-not-wide-range' pickups were A LOT closer to the single coils than I thought they'd be.
To me they sounded so dark n completely different
Darrell, You make fine content. Keep it up.
In this comparison video, it sounds like you are playing with your amp set up to overdrive with higher input volume - as we do, because it sounds great!
As a telecaster owner, I know how to cause amp overdrive, but my interest in the humbucker tele is to hear its cleanest tones.
The single coil tele mostly sounds clean. The humbucker version mostly does not, because its higher output is pushing the amp into overdrive.
So we mostly do not hear the real clean tones of the HB tele, except for some bridge tones after the 7 minute mark.
Perhaps it needed a different amp or amp gain setting for this comparison.
I also feel that the Tone knob should be used on a Tele, but most reviewers don't touch it.
I've Fallen in Love with the one that has Rosewood fretboard...She's all I need+want!
I like both. I started out on a CBS owned Fender Telecaster Standard back in the late 70's and by the way I played Blues, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal and 60's 70's and 80's Rock on that guitar. One night a friend of a friend of mine let me plug into his early Marshall transistor combo amp and it was awesome! The Telecaster is an awesome guitar. Humbuckers makes it even better!
Without a doubt the nicest guitarist on UA-cam
Such a meaningful comparison Darrell. You make me convinced to buy a telecaster when I was in dilemma whether or not to go for les paul with humbucker.
What about the 70s Tele Custom with humbucker neck and standard tele single coil bridge? That seems to be the best of both worlds
to me it's the opposite of the best of both worlds. I'm a strat neck pickup humbucker bridge person. my next guitar will be a hard tail strat with that setup.
Darrell your critique of the Deluxe points to the 70s Custom, with its sweet Humbucker on the neck and the traditional single coil on the bridge.
Thank you very much for all your comparisons. It really helps to choose the right guitar, especially when you can only afford one. It has ti be perfect for me. I got sick so no more money but I really enjoy the search for "the one".
I fell in love with the squier 50s custom but than I saw what you did to it and now I love it even more.
Thanks again, great job.
"only afford one" hahahah check back with me in ten yrs....you will probably have 5 or 10. It's a disease. Good luck!
My first electric was a Tele copy circa 1973. Now I have a G&L ASAT made in Japan in 2000. I do love the single coil.
+William Hawkins Nice!
Out of all the guitars I've owned my old Tele would have to be my favorite. I regret getting rid of it because I loved it and another one just can't replace it. I had single coils which sounded great. It had a nice blues tone to it but could play so much more. I have played the deluxe plenty of times and I think for more hard rock playing the dual humbuckers are the way to go. If you want a nice classic tone go with the single coils. I do have to say the telecaster has to be the most versitile guitar around.
This comparison reminds me why I picked traditional single coil bridge, and humbucker neck with split coil feature on the neck of my Tele. Single coil accentuates the brighter bridge sound, the humbucker supports the fuller neck sound. When you have HB at the bridge, you're making a thin sound thicker. And when you have a Single at the bridge you're making a full sound thinner!
i agree. humbucker in the neck with a split coil feature is the best on a tele
When I play the Tele I always ground my hand on the tailpiece for that hum canceling effect and the Tele wants that kinda musician-instrument connection
I have an FSR tele Deluxe Thinline with the WRHB-shaped Fender humbuckers and those pickups weren't potted, either. Squealed like a banshee when played loud, just like you said. I took out the pickguard, set it face down on a table, and poured hot wax right into the pickup covers from the back until they were full (I also covered the polepiece holes with duct tape to stop leaking wax). Let it cool, then put it back together. Have had zero problems with microphonics since. No need to change pickups.
Guitar with single colils sounds better, but for unknown reason I want Delux
I keep coming back to this video,I'm a big time sucker for teles and killer playing!! I own 2 standards ,One MIM as well as an American limited edition one piece rosewood neck , just love them both!!
+Gonzaga Nice Teles man! 👍
Thanks man! I Love the way you described them!
Both sound awesome and that's exactly why you should never have to choose. Get both!
One of the things that you notice when playing rock and roll on the Tele, you realize that your sound is a part of history. There's a long line of Tele players, right back to the beginning of rock n roll.
Nice vid! One of the best back-to-back comparisons I've watched yet. I tend to like the Deluxe a bit more, but only when the neck pickups are involved. It absolutely sings! But I agree on the bridge. The Standard's bridge is much better. Up until this video, I was thinking double humbuckers was the way to go . . . but not so sure now. But that's what research is for, right! Thanks for the post. I really enjoyed it.
Thanks!
Glad to help ☺
I watched this video before, and I appreciate the comparison. To me, nothing takes the place of that single-coil crisp attack. In 1971 (yep, I'm old) I loaded a Tele with two 1957 ES335 humbuckers. They cut through almost as glassy as single-coils; they smoked on the Hendrix, Cream and Mountain songs. Dagnab it, you young whippersnappers, we walked four miles in the snow to get a new set of Black Diamond strings!
The Strat is the AK-47 of electric guitar
The Tele is the Mosin Nagant of electric guitar
Reliable, amazing, and extremely awesome!
AK47: the gun is reliable but kicks like a mule
Strat: the guitar is reliable but the whammy bar whacks it out of tune haha
I think strat is more an m16 and tele is ak 47.
@@joshualessore7652 If you play a Chinese Squier Stratocaster, then of course the whammy bar will detune it.
Thanks for the great video!! It’s helping me solidify my choice for single coil. Just full of snap and character. I was curious about the humbuckers so it’s nice to hear the comparison
YES! I remember asking for this, also I mainly play three tele deluxes so I obviously would pick the deluxe but that regular is just fine! As long as it's a tele, it's good
+MrDirtBaggins 3 Tele Deluxes? That's hardcore! 😀
Darrell Braun Guitar
Of course, after all they are the best model of guitar in the world. In fact three simply is not enough, in thinking about getting another one
Hi Darrel, I'm a Strat guy but had to have some Telies. I started with the MIM Deluxe 72 loving the sound of Wide Range PUs with maple fretboard: sings brighter than your US Deluxe, but warmer than the US Standard, it's a keeper. Later on I got an AVRI 52 loving the "growl" of tone for some Stones riffs as well as raw Springsteen feeling in hand, but finally sold it because not playing it. Got a MIM Baja 60, even brighter than your Standard. But at the end of the day ... I'm a Strat guy 😎
that single coil tele sound grabs me every time
Darrell, i know this is a old vid. But even here your playing is mesmerizing and your improv makes me wanna buy an album with your playing.
Please, some day, tell us all about how you started, when you started, how you learned and your biggest inspirations in Guitar. I really want to learn to play the way and acales you play and just... Be as close to as awesome as you are :)
I've still got my old Marlin 30-30 that my papaw got for me 20 years before I was even born because he knew he always wanted a grandson to hunt with. That thing still works like a dream to this day and it's from the 60's.
Nothing will take away the love of the clarity of my standard Telecaster. I did like the sound of your deluxe at 7:35 . But to my ears I like better the old Telecaster sound . Thanks for the awesome video's
30/30 reference. Golden.
You are my go to guy now for all my guitar and equipment questions. Thank you for your in depth descriptions and precise easy to understand explanations and opinions!!!!! Keep it comin' Darrell!!!!!
A telecaster ain't a telecaster without the metal plate bridge that gives the distinctive tele sound. This Deluxe just can't twang.
Ivy Symphony
I think the ashtray bridge design is ugly. Looks unfinished.
If you are playing music that doesn't need twang, then the single coil can be problematic. A hardtail strat or tele with a humbucker is a great rock guitar that challenges gibson SGs and les pauls, with better tuning stability and easily swappable parts. A strat with a trem and a humbucker isn't quite as thick and punchy, as another youtubers video shows.
To me a telecaster is a just a shape. You can put whatever pickup you want in it. If you want twang you can put a tele pickup in a les paul and it will probably be 95% there. I never understood guitar purists who think that everything leo fender did was perfect from the get go. He had different designs when he went to g&L.
If everyone stuck to this "that ain't a tele" or "that ain't a strat" stuff, Eddie Van Halen would have never been the innovator he was. Who told anyone you can't put a humbucker in a strat? F that.
@@TheDmonet I couldn't have said it any better. I love a hss & hh strat such more than a sss. I hate a single coil bridge...too trebly to me
@@TheDmonet I mostly agree but then, what's the point in buying a tele with hh if its purpose is just to replicate a gibson. Why don't you just buy a sg, les paul or any kind of guitar which is supposed to be the best in what it does. No other could ever achieve the sound a tele had with single coils in bridge position. If you remove that, then it's obvious that you better buy a strat because it has a better sound on neck pickups. I mean, I don't know... A tele without a single coil on bridge still has the shape of a tele but what's the point in buying one soundwise?
@@stell4rt I already mentioned why: Scale length, stays in tune better, more easily swappable parts, different feel on the bridge (raised vs flat mount). Less expensive. If it sounds basically like a les paul but you don't like the gibson scale, don't like raised bridges, and want to be able to change a neck out without having to pay a luthier....those are many reasons why someone would choose a tele deluxe over a les paul.
As for the strat neck pickup, just put the strat neck pickup in the tele. I think strat hardtails sound better than trems (as does the god of all dad rockers Joe Bonnamassa however you spell it), and a telecaster and strat hardtail are basically the same guitar with one more cutout on the strat.
Again, the entire guitar traditionalist thing is one of the most annoying things I"ve ever experienced. "It just ain't no tele without no twang". Why do anyone care if someone wants a tele that doesn't twang? They should be forced to play a les paul.
Again EVH should have put an end to the guitar traditionalist nonsense but some people cling to it.
I have the American Standard and I love it. I've had it over a year now and I can't find one thing I'd change. It's just about perfect. That being said, it doesn't generate the same tone at a double-humbucker and so I'm on the lookout for my favorite of those next (likely a PRS). I like your deluxe but I think if I were going for that tone I'd just go with a guitar that can make those noises AND be a rock machine.
I've never heard someone make a guitar sound so seductive
I own a 2000's tele just like yours and I love it, but that deluxe sounds so sweet!!
I wanted to like the Deluxe but those pickups sounds muffled, like a wet blanket was thrown over the amp. The neck & middle position of the tele is just amazing!
With the utmost respect to Darrell ... check out some of the UA-cam demos on the newer Vintera Tele Deluxes. Make sure you check out the 70s Deluxe with 2 humbuckers. Amazing range of tones! Yes ... it might be a bit Les Paul leaning in sound ... but the tones are awesome! I love this line of guitars. Just about to pull the trigger on one.
@@stephenlennartz3466 I happen to have one myself, a 70s tele Deluxe reissue. I can attest, those humbucking pickups very sweet clean or distorted. What I like best about them is if you attack the strings there's a lot of dynamic range that comes out of them, and when you want to pull back in the background easing up on the attack gives you a very soft sweet sound. When you put the overdrive on, and push the strings hard, you get a beautiful harmonic sound, it sings🎶
Nothing sounds better than the neck pickup of the single coil tele. OMFG it's just like heaven.
Telecaster HS, Humbucker in the bridge and single in the neck. Is very versatil. Great video.
+Iván Maguiña Thanks man!
I have a -74 Deluxe with original Seth Lover WRHBs and it suits me perfect as my main rythm guitar. Had it since 1984. The sound is great, deep tone with a lot of versatility.
+Henrik Nordberg That's sweet! 🎸😍
I have a standard Mexican Tele that I put an old school 3 saddle brass bridge in and dropped some lollar pickups in. I Absolutley love it for my blues and rock tone.
If I’m only buying one then the standard would be it, but which guitar player only have one guitar.
The broke one...
Mike Anderson Like Jimi Hendrix, Slash, Ritchie Blackmore, Albert King, YJM, Brian May, John 5, Chuck Berry, and Brian Setzer?
They basically play(ed) and were devoted to one model of guitar.
@@nkmcfrln Pffft. Jimi Hendrix did not. He used Flying Vs, SGs, and multiple Strats.
Much like bikes and watches (also cars if you have the money), the correct number of guitars is N+1 (N=number of guitars currently owned).
I recently was given a Tele player plus for my 17th birthday
3 single coil pickups which are all noiseless it's got a 5 way switch and my god do I love this guitar. Its now become my main guitar and the for piece for my bands sound
Tele single coil pickups are just the best
To me it sounds like the standard single coils are more rough, piercing and in your face while the humbuckers are more muffled, rounded off and mellow sounding. I would own both for different purposes.
They both sound so sweet on those tunes you choose.
I got a Squire Tele custom, black.
Bought used, looked new.
Couldn't pass it up at GC for 250$.
Replaced saddles with brass and am using flat wound 11's. Play gospel songs with a bluesy rockabilly tone. The neck is very nice. Passed up a Classic vibe that was nice but not as nice or as versatile as the Tele custom.
Amen!!!
Hi, just saw this video and thank you. I have an 1983 USA Tele Standard which I am very pleased with. I recently got a Squier Affinity Tele to do some mods on and added a five way switch and middle pickup and set it up like a Strat, and also added a SPDT switch to connect the neck and bridge pickups (like Tele Nashville I think). These mods have made the Squier Tele an interesting beast tone wise.
It's the regular single coil Tele for me.. that's it that's all I need.. you could never go wrong with a classic tele .
My very first was a 1974 Deluxe. Everybody at the time, 1980, poop pooped this instrument- not a LP "Dude". It had the Wide Range pups. They kept breaking the xil wire for some reason allot. But this cleared up and I loved it. One of my "best friends" stole it. Took years to figure it out. The guy he sold it to, famous Nasville session guy, told me. Of course he no longer had it. But I remember the feel and sound. Thx Leo, RIP.
Conclusion: They're both utterly amazing and incredibly well designed guitars. I'm the proud owner of a Thinline Tele and would also highly recommend that one :-)
Btw My Thinline is a few years old and does not have Shawbuckers. The Wide Range-ish pickups in mine are very pleasant sounding and not squealy at all.
+The Don DeLuxe Love thinlines!
Thinking is on my wish list, great guitars!
Once owned a '72 Tele Deluxe, maple neck, has the Shawbucker neck and std tele single coil bridge, fondly remembered and must replace.
I love my single coil Tele. I thought one with humbuckers would be the perfect marriage between a Tele and a Gibson SG but I'm not that impressed with the Tele hum bucker sound. Thanks for the video!
You definitely keep these comparisons interesting love the analogy of Gramps 30/30" or the great woman who's always there old reliable! 👍 I have two an Mexican and a Affinity and a hollow thinline they are awesome! All different and love them all for different applications. 👍 🎸
The Tele is all about the rear single coil. Adding a rear humbucker just isn’t the same.
Don't forget the middle position. This is an important sound of the tele too
The answer is a Tele Custom!
I started on a tele. I have Jazzmaster, LP, Junior, etc. They are good too, but if the house is on fire and I need to play tonight, I'm grabbing the tele.
Didn’t hear any rhythm playing, it was all lead work. I’d love to hear a few chord progressions side by side.
that intro was awesome xD gonna start with a tele for sure
+Matheus Castro 😎 Thanks!
yes it was great, was wondering if it is a existing song or just impro.
Matheus Castro i was tryin to figure out which one i wanted to start out with the standard or deluxe
Its amazing to hear how each guitar inspires you to play completely differently. You use the grit on the deluxe humbuckers as a nice condiment, not too much not too little. But the single coils on the standard tele you use the way a painter would make broad brushstrokes. Unapologetically, and with more "umph". Being a single coil player myself this was cool to see.
I prefer the standard however both sound great. I like the sound of the standard a little more though.
There’s something about the tone of the tele that is just amazing, having said that the single coil when sliding has a noise that
Has always annoyed me and always felt it was because of how my guitars were cheaper models, the hum bucket has something missing but it also feels thicker like a raw photo with a wider range of options to work with in post.
I love a Tele Standard but I have to have the old ashtray bridge with brass saddles. I know the six-saddle provides more accurate intonation but something about the brass both aesthetically and tonally just does it for me!
Great video, thanks! I've always been a single (coil) guy and here I also much prefered the singles.
The standard seemed brighter and more "tele" sounding to me.
Is there a pedal that may reduce any hum it produces?
I like its look better as well.
Try a gate pedal
When I was about 6 or 7 years old, one of my Dads friends left a White Tele and a Twin reverb at our house after a local jam session. So this sat in our living room for almost a week before he came back to pick it up. Well, that was it....I knew I was staring at heaven, I was never the same after that. Now after almost 60 years I am fortunate to own about a half dozen Teles. My favorite is with a tele bridge and SD humbucker in the neck. Wired to get out of phase sound in middle position. That set up covers a lot of ground...all good!
Dammit Darrell, I like both of them... I see a visit to the bank coming up :-)
Nothing can bite like a tele at one end. And then sound sweet and soulful at the other end. It's a hell of a guitar. And that's why it's still one of the holy trinity after all these years.
I really like the way the deluxe sounds, especially in the mix. I just can't get over all the plastic on the front. Too much pick guard.
I have to agree, but to me it sounds like a warmer tele which is perfect in my book... I had to pick one up.
mcleroy1967 ... picking up a used one next week - black on black. Maybe if you wanted a Deluxe, that would be a good compromise. I find the black one looks the best since the pick guard doesn’t stand out as much.
