I used to work on a show produced by Glen Larson called “NightMan”, circa 1997. I was on the special effects crew, where we did the pyrotechnic, flying/rigging, and prop effects on its first season in San Diego, CA.
One thing to understand about Glen Larson was that he liked to tell “fish stories” (to put it lightly). Any show he put up had to have the first copies of something, whether it be cars, electronics, or debuts of actors or musical acts.
Example- Larson used to claim he got the prototypes of the Plymouth Prowler cars as driven by the lead character for our show. He would even go so far as to claim the cars would need to be delivered to car shows from time to time during our production run as they were “on loan” from Chrysler Corporation, who made the cars.
This didn’t make sense though as BOTH cars were pretty much wrecked by the time we ended production that first season (this due to stunt driving mishaps and stuff). I can imagine the second season was worse when they moved the show to Canada for the second season, where the show’s quality suffered immensely. I can also imagine those Prowlers would have been handled much more gingerly if they were indeed first copies or even prototypes on loan from Chrysler as he had claimed.
Larson’s claims about the Firebirds (and even the Prowlers in he show I was on) were probably more a matter of Hollywood eye-wash than anything. Something to stir up interest and hype for his projects, as well as his playing the part of salesman, which most producers do in order to get their projects on television or theaters. Anything to get and keep his name out there, I guess…

hmm did you ever hear about James Garners story about his confrontation with him, where he got cross with him about apparently ripping off Rockford file episodes for knight rider, do you know if theirs any truth to that?

    • @blue.5058
      @blue.5058 2 роки тому +4

@@kavinskysmith4094 I had always understood that Knight Rider was actually a reimagining of “Have Gun, Will Travel” (right down to the knight chess piece on the FLAG semi truck) with elements of “My Mother The Car” added in, but I can’t confirm either way. I wouldn’t be surprised if Garner felt Larson stole from The Rockford Files, as elements of that show seem to be present in KR too.
Larson is well-known for recycling, reusing, and “borrowing” ideas from other shows with just enough changes to avoid lawsuits, though. He did it with Battlestar Galactica (borrowed from Star Wars, right down to the VFX crew), and BJ And The Bear (taken from Smokey And The Bandit), and other shows.
NightMan itself was itself a kind of Batman rip off, especially with the fact the character belonged to Marvel Comics. So you could consider that show to be a rip off of a rip off, of sorts.

    • @kavinskysmith4094

@@blue.5058 and another rip off actually, given what some fans of the shadow have said, where batman ripped off the shadow and repurposed him to be a non lethal viglante that always let the bad guys live
which made him far more marketable to kids, hence his longevity into the modern era, have gun will travel though, that I havent seen that but I know that is a gene roddebery production
so he rips off star wars and star trek's creators all in one go in some way or another, go figure lol

Is the interview from Glen A. Larson shown in this video the very first mention of that myth?
Because I'm wondering if it's possible what he meant by "we got the first three off the assembly line" was not "we got the first three [cars that ever came] off the assembly line", but rather "we got the first three [cars for the show] off the assembly line"? Meaning he may have just been trying to say that the first cars they used for filming came directly from the plant, as opposed to the later cars used in the show that were procured in different ways (e.g. train derailment).
Then some people might have misunderstood that and repeated what they thought he meant, thus starting the myth.

First off the assembly line urban legend probably started with a GM exec throwing out a little extra PR Larson's way once KR had made the 80s TA as big an automotive cultural icon as Burt made the 77 TA. Either that or Larson was getting in touch with his inner fisherman and spinning a bit of a KR tall tale.

It's not really a "mystery" but one thing that always kind of bugged me in a tiny way.....why was it that when they were always underway in the semi that they almost never were seated or never saw the trailer moving around as it they hit a speed bump or went up a hill or the driver had to slow down fast and everyone in the back had to hold onto something solid? That always kind of bugged me that they always had scenes in the semi that never showed any movement....it was like a little cocoon or time capsule more so than a moving trailer. Did that ever bother you?

I've worked in dealerships. Dealing with sales people is like dealing with politicians. When Glen said he needed the cars, somebody probably said "I'll get you the first three off the assembly line!" (They'll say anything to make a sale), Probably meaning the first three that they could get their hands on. Glen probably mistook that for being the first three ever created. So he went with that. Ironically I really didn't care for the new F bodies when they came out, but then Knight Rider came along and that all changed lol. Great detective work once again my friend. HI, I don't know if I commented on your page before. Your info is correct. As manufacturers tend to bring out their new models in the fall of the prior to the designated year model. In this case the firebirds especially the Trans am had some issues getting up to speed and out the door as you note. High Performance Pontiac Magazine did a 2 issue story on the Knight Rider cars and it lines up with a lot that you said in the video. Manufactures had liaisons in California to help get their products on the screen. Glen L. embellished his story. By the time they wanted/needed the T/A's they were in high demand as all the dealers were screaming for them and allocations were tight. They finally went back and forth and the studio people you mentioned were told be here at a certain time and you can get your 3 cars. The rest of the article goes into validate that George Barris's name never came up with the design of the Knight rider car, maybe a little change later on? The big reveal in this article was that the Knight Rider show actually help reinvigorate Pontiac as they were close to shutting down. You might be able to get those magazines out their archives?

Hello guys! Always writing from Italy, I wish to add this comment because today I found a small article (with one b/w picture only) reading one of the old car magazines I have in my collection. The name of the magazine is "Autosprint" that was (or better, "is" because it's still available today) focused on Formula One and Rallies but sometimes there were pages about production cars and news from all the world too.
On this issue, November 30 1982, they wrote these words (I wish I can post the scan of the article but here is not possible lol).
"Mr William Houghlund, General Motors vice president, giving the keys of THE FIRST FIREBIRD TRANSAM (black and white with white ubcaps and the words "Official Pace Car Daytona 500") to Mr. Bill France Jr., International Speedway Corporation and Nascar President.
This Transam will be the new pace car, from next February 20, when the Nascar Championship will begin on the Daytona Speedway.
GM has already built 2500 of these cars (I think they mean Transam) that will be avalaible on the market during 1983."
Well, this was the news on this magazine dated November 30, 1982. Is it possible that the first Transam went out of the production line as a Pace Car?

Was that a PURPLE Firebird with matching PURPLE wheel covers? Super COOL!! Why can't they just reproduce some of the coolest cars from the past? With modern engines and technology? I will never understand...
Anyway, I always wondered how many color combos there were especially with wheel covers involved, though it seems that T/A covers were always BLACK? Having color matched wheels had to be pretty rare back then as it is now, and people probably thought it was ugly, but I sure don't remember seeing any, but I also don't remember seeing any bowling ball hubcaps at all growing up in the midwest, and I would have remembered, trust me... I only saw various other model years / ones with different wheels.
BTW, It's too bad the Recaro edition gold turbo cast wheels underneath the covers weren't more common as they match the rest of the gold so well, imagine how KITT would have looked with gold turbo casts? I feel like the wheels on the SPM car were dipped in chrome because they are very shiny! Wonder if anybody has done that...?
Would a white Firebird with white covers look like acid pit KITT? The white covers from the '83 pace car were always pretty sweet too as they were a different wheel altogether right? Concealed fins...

Weird question, in the Season 4 episode Out Of The Woods, it looks like there are a couple of Dukes Of Hazzard filming areas. Looks like the later seasons Duke Farm and looks like the saw mill is possibly the Boar's Nest.

When I started driving in 85 I wanted my parents to buy me a new Trans-Am but it wouldn't do it. I'm not complaining about the car I ended up with because it was actually a pretty nice car and even in the end in 88 I ended up with a Dodge Ramcharger in 89 I ended up with a Chrysler Fifth Avenue

I hope I did not miss it (and I hope that you historians also read this comment - as you receive many comments each time): is the often mentioned „Pre-Pilot“ which was shot to promote Knight Rider to Universal existing? Or is it stored in an archive respectively not available to the public due to contracts / copyright?

Let me add to how it may not have necessarily been a lie after the information in this video was presented. Let’s say the Trans Ams were made in April of 1982 just for the sake of the argument. Maybe the first 3 were the same color both in the interior and exterior. My family had a 1982, 1884, 1987 and 2, 1989 Camaros and/or Trans Ams and black with tan interior was the #1 most popular build followed I believe by red with tan interior.
With the gentlemen in the video who wrote the pilot, he may not have been lying. When the order was placed for the 3 cars and a tight deadline to acquire them was needed, GM maybe authorized the first 3 Trans Ams built that month to go to the studio since they met the criteria. And someone then may have in turn told the pilot writer that they were given the first 3 off the assembly line meaning the first 3 that were currently being built, but not the actual first 3 ever made. But because a general statement was made, the pilots writer may have assumed that it was the first 3 ever made. And sometimes auto manufacturers will keep the first 5 or 10 for a period of time for advertising or whatever and then later on will sell them to a dealership. So the information received to the pilots author could have been very likely in reality but ended up not being. The important detail of them possibly being the first 3 off of the assembly line of the current ones being built may have simply had the one minor detail left out. So more than likely, it wasn’t necessarily a lie but it also wasn’t the truth of what he may have believed or been told.

I don't think it was an honest mistake - I believe that Glen was told these were the first ones off the production line. It could have been a metaphor while a couple of guys are BS'ing around. 'Hey dude, you just got the first 3 Firebirds off the line'. It sounds good so it probably stuck. That said, NICE WORK tracking down all of this information!!

  • @brentboswell1294

I would imagine that Firebird, Trans Am, and Camaro sequence numbers are all comingled. The first Trans Ams likely didn't have a low numbered VIN. At Ford, for example, VIN'S below a certain number are preproduction cars, that are supposed to be rounded up and destroyed and/or otherwise disposed of. These engineering mules and "press cars" have production details that may be quite a bit different from series production cars, and the manufacturers don't want them outside their grasp, for lots of reasons. The story of Mustang VIN 1 comes to mind: a Canadian airline pilot finangled it out of a dealer in Newfoundland the day before Mustangs were officially on sale. The dealership realized the error on Monday morning, and tried to correct it. Ford Motor Company later intervened, but Canadian law made the sale legal and final. Ford got the car back around 1967 by offering the owner Mustang VIN 1 million, built to his specs. The only option he didn't check the box on was the K code engine, which didn't carry the 3 year/36000 mile manufacturers warranty 😉

Hello. I'm a subscriber of your channel, and I'm from Brazil. I'm also a fan (to a lesser extent compared to you and other fans) of the Knight Rider series. Although I don't speak English (that's why I'm using Google translator), I use UA-cam's automatic subtitle system and with translation into Brazilian Portuguese to try to understand your speech in your videos. As I understand it, there was the Firebird model before the Trans AM model. This has always been my question: Was the model used in the series a Pontiac Firebird, Firebird Trans AM, or just Trans AM? I ask this due to the fact that, for years, several videos and articles (usually in Brazilian Portuguese) about the series diverge on the model. Some say it was a Firebird, others Firebird Trans AM, or simply Trans AM. Thank you for your attention, and thank you for your work and dedication in rescuing facts from a series that marked the lives of many people.
