Enjoyyy!!
; )))
The Chessmen were from Fort Wayne Indiana and were originally formed in 1964 under the name "The Telecasters". The original members were the founder and leader of the group, Jon Finchum, drums , Chuck Weick, bass guitar, Phil Motley, rhythm guitar, and Steve Griebel, lead guitar. The name change to the Chessmen took place in 1965 with the addition of a fifth band member, Kevin Evans playing the organ. The group, collectively, wrote "You Can't Catch Me" in early 1966 and recorded it on the Phalanx label that same summer. Phil left for college in the fall of '66 for 2 years and was replaced by Al Crowe. Phil returned in 1968 and rejoined the group. Near that same time, Chuck left the group and was replaced by Mike Geise on bass guitar. One of the most memorable moments for the Chessmen, aside from hearing their song being played on the local area radio stations, was a guest appearance on the WPTA Television teen program called "21 A-Go-Go" where they played 3 songs. The end came for the Chessmen in 1969 when 3 of the 5 members, Phil, Kevin and Steve were called to duty in Vietnam. All returned safely, but their days as members of a band were now behind them. Jon Finchum and Mike Geise, however, went on to perform with a very popular group known by 2 names: Peace & Love and their alter-ego stage name "Snake and the Armpits".
Steve, their lead guitarist, was just in my shop a minute ago! Super great dude!
You might not believe me, but my dad is on Rhythm guitar in this song, thanks so much for uploading it.
Masterpiece!!! 1960`s Garage Rock For Ever!!!
Sio absolutely super garage live forever❤
I'm not too sure what you mean by "that moog", but in this record, Kevin used a Farfisa Combo Compact organ, Chuck used a Fender Precision Bass through a Fender Bassman amp, Steve (me) used a Fender Stratocaster guitar through a Fender Super Reverb amp and a Gibson Maestro Fuzz Tone, Phil used a Gibson ES-355TDC guitar through a Fender Princeton amp, and John played Gretsch drums.
Epic thank you, I will be taking notes
In 1968, I was running a cherry red Hagstrom semi-hollow electriic guitar through a Fender Super Reverb, and of course, a Maestro Fuzz-Tone. State of the art for a kid in junior high school! For Christmas 1968, I received a Vox Wah-Wah pedal.
@@nuwavedave You had great gear. Our rhythm guitar player Phil had a red Hagstrom solid body before buying his Gibson ES-355 TDC.
I just love the guitar distortions back then!! ✨
Pure garage sound, energetic twisting, wholesome clean-cut kids, monsters from the surf. Yeah, 1960s Pop culture all the way, baby.
I loved this song right away !! The perfect harmony between psychedelia and punk !!
Animals, The Kingsmen, organ and thou, that,s you!
2019 here and punk still hasn't been killed.
Makes me wanna get down with the groovy twist in the sand at Malibu.
Twitchen!
True Knowledgeable Music Lovers Can Feel "The Chessmen's" Vibe. The others just "Can't Catch Them". Good Fun.
This is the same riff as Paul Revere and the Raiders killer song “ Just Like Me “.
Very catchy. I could do the boogaloo to this.
Cavewoman is queen of the cave.
Very cool garage tune. Ah, but the video makes the song pop.
Coldest looking beach party ever
See kids, your grandparents were even weird back then
:)
hell ya but we had some real fun mate😂Look at all this retro voice over dummy’s ,no skills,no Heart,.....that’s the the Sound....
Stilling loving this.
They are dancing to the twist !
The video looks like the clip from the 1962 movie The Wild Guitar with Arch Hall Jr and Nancy Czar. This is a great song that Rocks which is wild and insane.
Thanks, I was about to mention that. Arch Hall Jr plays Bud Eagle. Funny movie.
really looks like a stretch of beach i visited in Malibu, the rocks look identical!
Another super cool 60s Garage Rock tune from you! Again, one of my favorite songs so its going in my Favorites Folder, thanks!!!
this reminds me of when i was too young to be one of them
They managed to combine The Kingsmen's "Louie Louie" with Paul Revere and the Raiders' "Just Like Me."
Big Fun, love it!
60`S FOR EVER!
This just occurred to me....If you're questioning which were the most popular organs used in those days, the Hammond B3 played through a Leslie speaker system was probably the #1 favorite, but Farfisa Combo Compacts became very popular because they were much easier to move from gig to gig than the Hammond, they sounded good, and they were made popular, thanks to Paul Revere and the Raiders.
GREAT MOVES!
"It's The Beat, The Beat, The Beat"!!! Right Sir. I've Got It.
This was the beatnik generation of the 60's and they had great music and wild free love SEX, before the spread of out of control AIDS, Herpes, and other S.T.D.S. that are resistant to most modern cures, and its getting worse! I came of age in the 70's and it was the last time a generation was Free to do almost anything that they want to do! Those days are gone, sorry young people, I feel very sorry for you and what you inherited! Good Luck!
Excellent track!
This is a Great Honour for me! wow! Thank you for your Fantastic Song! ;)))
I believe it. That's what I first thought. Malibu.
My Dad(Phil) said he remembers recording this with his Gibson ES-355. (but he might be a bit forgetful lol)
That solo!
Footage from wild guitar.
Thx Slania!Took me a long Time to geht this record on Vinyl!
Great video accompaniment, thank you Slania!
This is good stuff!
Thanks for sharing this one!
Thank you very much for this incredible song! ;)
Vid is a far cry from the Kalamazoo-based label (Phalanx) they did this gem on!!
Buen ejemplo del eslabón que une al garage con la psicodelia. Un momento crucial en la musica, el rock nunca jamas volveria a ser el mismo despues de este año :-)
excellent video montage that matches the song
fun vid
Grazie ^_^
Thanks! (y)
Awesome!
FAROUT! AND GROOVY!
Chesterfield kings do a great cover too! But this is the best!!!!
Thank you! This is the original...we wrote it.
excellent!
Love the hair and fashion agrees with music.
LOVE
the beach footage is from the movie Wild guitar with arch hall. kinda stupid but a must see
Excellent video! nice Beach Party!!! ^ ^
Ralph Morman was the lead vocalist on Joe Perry's ( Aerosmith ) solo album
Ralph Morman was not in this band.
Garage Punk...;)
Garage rock rules
yeeee :)))
excellent
punk was born in the garage
and the basement
popbottle
and in the bedroom.
The original 60s punk was the best punk.the statement had already been made in the 60s.or if you like, marlon brando in the 50s in movie 'The Wild One'(1953)laying the groundwork for a whole shcool of anti-heros eg:'Rebel Without A Cause'(1955)but i think Arthur Lee of Love was the first musical punk(andmore).but you could go all the way back to cave man days when the first cave man was clubbed on the head.70s punk onwards merely reiterated the obvious.
@@starcloud4959 thats the music i try to write.
He could be correct about that. I know that he had (and probably still has) the cherry ES-355TDC, but I thought that came after the red Hagstrom. Of course, that was nearly a half century ago (YIKES!) and there could be a few cobwebs in my memory bank. :-)
Twisting and a shaking on the sand is interspersed with psychedelic inspired pin wheels. Get your groove on, kids!
i enjoyed the couple wear in black and dancing like native américans
wow!!!
The boys are holding the feathers bird .. so 'as to take life lightly .. ;)
Cool!
I suppose it's punk like polka was the "punk" of the 19th century. lol I don't know.. kind of surf-core. Those folks were looking for anything to twist to back in the day. Great tune. Love that fuzz.
all these rock bands that lost the organ n entered into heavy metal n glam rock r crap compared 2 these bands, these bands have got a high energy sound with proper guts n rawness, which makes it culturally important, untill ive heard it in its original form i wont comment about the bass cos this new tech cant give us the tru bottomend, well done lads the natural high its all that matters,n being proud of what u done, but 4 not doing cheesy pop u get respect 4 ever,
Someone needs to release all the GEMS from the Phalanx label out of Portage, MI. on a comp CD. Wonder what happened to the master tapes?
Where exactly was this filmed at? It looks to me, according to the terrain of the beach, that it's either the Ventura area, Malibu area, or the Palos Verdes penninsula area. Can you guys tell me?
I love the vid, by the way. Way too groovy.
The video clip looks like the 1962 movie The Wild Guitar with Arch Hall Jr and Nancy Czar.
I believe you
Yup, Punk Rock.
Oh yeah
Hmmm, sounds a lot like Louie Louie, just with different lyrics.
+Bruce Gordon *** I was thinking the Kinks song, "All Day & All of the Night."
Bruce Gordon It uses the exact same chord progression.
A chord progression that has been used billions of times...
I think it sounds unique given the constraints of a familiar structure and chord progression. The most similar component to Louie Louie is the vocals.
it was a weird time to be ten, but je ne regrette rien
This sounds like The Who - Can't Explain (1964).
Good video. What film is it from. Rog. Pacific sunset records.
yeah!! ;)
All fuzzed up and everywhere to go-go, baby! This one's for you guys: Lenny Kaye and Little Steven.
Great song, fun video. Any idea what those paddles are that many of the dancers are holding?
So far 3 groups called the Chessmen:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Chessmen
A Yamaha YDS-2! It might be a YDS-1, but anyhow, nice!!
It's a Farfisa Combo Compact
You mean the organ, okay, cool :)
I meant the motorcycle :D
But anyways - thanks for the info :D
My grandpa still has that floral bathing suit in his dresser.
My friends and me act like that.
it's not often i comment on utube stuff but that girl at .36,.47,and 1.20 amoungst other time spots is hilarious.she looks like she swallowed a shovel full of quaaludes or else went straight from her eyedrops test to the party.hilarious!!!!and another brilliant nuggets garage spunding band from the 60's.the blues magoos, psychotic reaction, the turtles, chocolate watch band-right up there with em.
Funny thing one year later SRVs brother Jimmie was in this band for a short time.
ace
Being a good dancer was so much easier back in the day. Because everyone sucked.
penguinworm Very true
The Twist on Speed
@Sabb99GL I believe you
the drugs were good back then.
...The Constipation Killers !!!
even the sand can dance better than these lot lol fine tune & post
@Sabb99GL ...............Then your dad's name must be Phil. I'm the lead guitar player in this record, and Phil and I go back many, many years. We had a lot of fun writing and recording this with John, Chuck and Kevin.
Say hi to your dad for me!
Steve G
I likes.......if they made that left turn in Albuquerque, they'd be The Animals Eric Burdon style
Louie Louie - We gotta go...
The video here looks like a clip from the early 60s' B-movie, "Wild Guitar". Correct me if I'm wrong.
If it is, I want to see it!
If I went to the beach and danced like this, I would get arrested.
Party lagging? Break out the feathers.
Bring on the psych pop.
no it ain't punk it's 60's garage rock.
The bike, best seen at 2:10-2:14 is it a CZ 125 Sport?
Their thinking to themselves - boy don't I look stupid. Ouch, I just slipped a disk.

All those people are in nursing homes now.
And what about you, Dude???
Not all, but any survivors are close.
Gregorio Ganesh n
No there not, they would be in their early to mid 70's. Probably still rockin' out.
Not all of us sporto. Some of us are still the people you cross the street to avoid. I got yer nursing home right here.
