The Answer (US garage band 60s) Formed 1965, Berkeley, CA, United States Disbanded 1966 Members Todd Anderson (vocals), Michael Friedman (bass guitar), Chip Wright (lead guitar), Mike Simpson (rhythm guitar), Bob Shumaker (drums) One 7” - 1965 Why You Smile / I’ll Be In - Appears on Garage Beat ‘66, Vol. 3: Feeling Zero…
I first heard this on my way to Toronto in 1988 because my friend had this song on his tape. Damn great tune! Another one of those was "Take You Away" by Lil Boys Blue(which I have posted on UA-cam).
This is a great song! I didn't hear it until the 80s but its been one of my faves since! This is the flip side of "I'll Be In" if I remember correctly, on White Whale records, same as the Turtles. Thanks for uploading this!!!
@GarageRockRadio Ciao!Thank you very much! I too have discovered this song in the 80's ... and then bought the compilations Sixties Rebellions .. great collection!
@hobosandbuttmonkeys The film is called Teenage Mother from '67, you can find it through Something Weird Video. As for the girl...her name is Arlene Farber and quite easy on the eyes. I consider her a brunette version of Gillian Hills from Beat Girl.
Yeah baby!! Dig the way cool 1966 Marlin in the background. Hot girls and great cars!! All thats needed now is a bottle of Boonsfarm apple wine (god, who else remembers that crap) and a couple of glazed donuts, and its go time skippy!!!!
Found this on a Grateful Dead Website "The Answer were Todd Anderson (Vocals), Mike Simpson (guitar), Michael Friedman (bass), Bob Schumaker (drums), and Chip Wright (guitar)....Later Mark Batterman joined them on keyboards; he had previously played guitar in fellow Berkeley High band The Haymarket Riot. After The Answer split up Todd Anderson and Michael Friedman went on to form The Droogs."
Look for the Teenbeat Mayhem book coming out sometime this year. It has a lot of 60s Garage type bands in it. Discography type book with photos and other stuff. The Answer will be in there, among thousands of other groups from that "Boss" era!
I always wanted to know what this song was called, it used to come on 97.7 Huber Heights radio (suburb of Dayton, OH) along with other great 60's obscurities but they never named the songs (!!) Thank you for posting this!
They used to show these movies at the old Boro Drive-In in Attleboro, Mass. Not that I ever saw any of them. LOL BTW, the girl in these clips reminds me of my second grade teacher. :o !!!
This is a Californian band, from Berkley if I'm not mistaking, and this song was released in 1965 :) You can find this track on "Sixties Rebellion, Vol. 3: The Auditorium" :)
70s and 80s were the beggning of huge commercial music projects, which led music into the crappy stuff we hear at the radios (but just there). It basically created the pop radio mainstream shit music, stadium concerts, etc.
Well while I was away I thought every day 'Bout comin' home to you Not thinkin' you was untrue But I know why you smile I know why you smile at him Oh yes I know Well people found it hard To think of us apart And so did I Until he walked by Well I know why you smile.... Why do you go On puttin' on a show Pretending you love me While you can see That I know why you smile I know why you smile at him Yes I know, yes I do
I'd say you did a good little thing with the fantasy part. I had forgotten this film, but it all came back. The video images are actually better than the song!
the wierd thing about this movie, is that I heard that my science teacher in high school a guy named Mr. Mittleman was involved in this movie, I went to Long Beach High School in New York, what is amazing is that he wasn't fired , I graduated in 70 and our society was far less politically correct as it is now
What's not to smile about? Slania rocks! Listen to one of my band's original songs from 1966: "Who Do You Love Girl" - ua-cam.com/video/AUfh2hMD4-s/v-deo.html

The 1960's girls were definitely the prettiest! This was obviously taken from a movie; anybody know the title?
It's "Teenage Mother" from 1967. It was Fred Willard's film debut.
RIP Fred Willard.
Cool
Well while I was away
I thought every day
'Bout comin' home to you
Not thinkin' you was untrue
But I know why you smile
I know why you smile at him
Oh yes I know
Well people found it hard
To think of us apart
And so did I
Until he walked by
Well I know why you smile....
Why do you go
On puttin' on a show
Pretending you love me
While you can see
That I know why you smile
I know why you smile at him
Yes I know, yes I do
Great tune. Great effects on the video, but otherwise I don't understand the video. I'd love to hear the story being the tune and the video. Thanks.
