Hey Thomas, just watched your video and it resonated deeply. We've been pouring our heart and soul into our game 'Venture to the Vile' and I believe it embodies the principles you mentioned. The journey's been challenging, especially with our wishlist count not quite reflecting the passion we've put in. Would be honored if you ever took a glance at it. Thanks for the insights, they're invaluable for indie devs like us! 🎮
I think Portal definitely has three hooks: Mechanical: The portals. Visual/Presentation: The white pristine environments, the blue and orange, the cubes, all very distinct and iconic. Story: GLaDOS, the humor, the weird experiment, the Half Life shared universe, etc. I fully agree with the idea of the Trinity Hooks, but I'm not entirely sure about the Big But. Because soooo many games could literally just be "X but a video game". Like The Last of Us is a zombie movie, but a video game, Uncharted is Indiana Jones, but a video game, Red Dead Redemption 2 is a western, but a video game. Games that aim for immersive experiences, definitely don't NEED to work in contrasts. Stuff like The Witcher, Assassin's Creed, Skyrim, can't be really summarized to "X but Y" in my opinion. They just want to create a believable world and story for the player to be invested in. EDIT: I 100% agree when you say that if a feature doesn't compliment the Trinity Hook (or at least the core intended fantasy you're trying to recreate), you should remove it from your game. So many games have unnecessary bloat.
@@owdoogamesthere are actually people who don't plan to earn money from their crappy games? Thank god, I thought your kind was extinct with the introduction of steam. While devs were making freeware games all the time in the 90s
14:14 minecraft survival could be: survival game, but you can reshape the environment. At the time, simply having voxel graphics could've counted as a visual hook too, i think.

My problem with the polished demo is that you basically need final art in the first stages of development

What happens to the trinity hook if our game doesn't have a stroy?
I'd honestly avoid using an IP I don't have the rights to in my marketing
My game is going to earn me six figures:
£0.00001
The more you belive in your failure then is it more likely that you are going to fail. Its better to gaslight yourself in positive way.
@@verboxinho - Who said anything about failure? I’m a hobbyist and have no plans to charge for my crappy (or even good) games 😉

Hi Sir Thomas, I'm from Indonesia, if I want to do Kickstarter campaign, whether are I need a Partner from USA?

0:40 ...wait, what? how? you just said the real thing I'm thinking right now, omg.
Man I missed the live
I'd easily argue that both Portal and Cuphead have all three hooks
Tldr?
Yeah? I can certainly agree with that. Proofs it's (EDIT : The trinity hook's) value.

Dang! Tried to ask Smith to leave his question in the comments! Guess he didn't read my text.
As a game dev at what point do you need to worry about copyright or trademark your work?
Before you start.

I dont know if this sounds good, but what about a psycholigical horror with a D&D art style and first-person perspective.
Ngl I don't care if my game makes 6 figures... I just want someone who doesn't know me to play it and like it...
Six figures in Japanese yen. 🤟
Im mak8ng days gone with mechs
