True story, I had a friend borrow a book of mine and their dog got ahold of it....they called me immediately, asked if it was a regular copy or a special edition, and met me outside work the very next day with a brand-new copy and an apology. If something you borrow gets ruined, no matter if it was your fault or not, it's your responsibility to replace it.
That person who spilled hot chocolate on the cover and blamed their brother literally made a sitcom situation out of it, usually a sign it's your fault lol.
The time Zuko was crying and shouting at sky, asking the lightning to hit him....many people say that he was talking to his father, but I really felt like he was shouting at the world
With the male author one I don’t think anyone should force themselves to read a book they don’t think they’ll like just because of who wrote it. That being said there’s absolutely no harm in investigating if there are any books by female authors that you think you’ll like.
The one about destroying their friend's copy of Words of Radiance, then shifting the blame to a brother and poisoning their relationship, over _Words of freaking Radiance,_ is the funniest thing ever. Big Sadeas energy there.
Really random and a throwback... I had a dream last night that you got lost in the Marina Trench to mermaids 😢 I was devastated! Anyways thanks for the amazing recommendation/nightmares 😂
The undulate and Full Metal Alchemist ones had me dying! I haven't watched or read FMA, but it's one of my brother's favorites and I also know the context of that comment. Whenever I see a meme about it, I send it to him and I'll DEFINITELY have to read this comment to him!
So, I totally resonate with the "I only read male authors" person. I remember a while back, going into a new bookstore that had opened (the owner had ties to my university, it was conveniently located, and they had free coffee so long as you bought something if it was below 32 degrees out). I noticed that most of the authors were ones I'd never read, and very quickly realized why. The bookstore specialized in books by female authors, LGBTQ authors, and non-white authors. They still did have a lot of the standard stuff and best sellers you expect to find in a bookstore that's 90% fiction books pandering to a super liberal audience, but, it made me realize how much my recent reading had been dominated by white male authors (mostly older). At first, I just wrote it off as "well, I like fantasy and sci-fi/sci-fantasy, and those genres are just dominated by white men." However, shortly after, I was watching a Q&A by a content creator I like, who specializes in Magic the Gathering content, and he (a former English teacher) was asked about his favorite books, and he mentioned Octavia Butler (and, especially "Parable of the Sower"). I immediately requested that from my library, along with the sequel. Shortly after, the library closed for a while (2020 happened), but, that book store remained open online, so I was able to call the owner and get some similar recs. He was able to recommend quite a few authors, like Le Guin, N.K. Jemisin, Derrick Bell, Walter Mosley, Ernest Gaines, and Ken Liu, who I greatly enjoyed. I also went back and read a few books from authors whose books I'd "read" in high school, like Allende, Richard Wright, Mohsin Hamid, and James Baldwin. I still probably skew disproportionately towards fiction by white male authors. I just make more of a concerted effort to not only read those authors.
I have straight up bought copies of my favorite books to give away. They're not getting my copies (and honestly, I've abused those copies enough myself that loaning them might be a risk anyway). Plus, some of them are old covers that are hard to find anymore. I had to search a while to replace my old copy of Sabriel when I never got my old copy back!
if you speak honest and true and the other person still has a problem, then that's a them problem (unless what you said or did was horrible, but if they dislike you over what you said that's also their prerogative)
The FMA post really drives home the point that anyone trying to get internet validation for their actions could be omitting pertinent information without readers knowing. Also I am cancelling out the only male author reader by being a predominantly female author reader.
The Avatar and FMA trolls are pretty iconic parts of their respective series, but the Caw Caw Clock happened like 2 months ago. I may be inclined to reward them with paternity just for using such a sensitive spoiler. That said, I wheezed laughing right along with you. The trolls are such a welcome reprieve from the more stressful real-life scenarios (even if they could all be fake)
It's not really a spoiler, anyone who knows who the crow person is knows they're against the Nobles. Now, it WOULD be a spoiler if you said-- (just kidding i'm not gonna actually write a spoiler here)
On the passionate people question: another good tip is to ask questions, build off of what other people have said and let them know if you think they made a good point. Also, if you’ve been talking for several minutes, and everyone else in the conversation has kind of mentally checked out, not a good sign!
Finally, some AITA posts that don't make my blood effing boil and don't give me emotional damage for people that might not even exist. That was lovely for a change.
I’m not the father. 🙌🏼 I know it’s best to be honest but I always feel bad when I have strong negative feelings towards a friend’s favorite book. It could be special or significant in ways I don’t know!
19:50 I didn’t realize when my husband and I started dating 21 years ago that him loaning me his copy of Terry Goodkind Wizards First Rule was a huge sacrifice on his part, but I earned his trust
i’m one of the people who is notoriously bad at returning books that have been lent to me and for that reason i actually really hate borrowing books from people. i’d MUCH rather get it from the library and never ask anyone (except people i live with) to borrow their copy of anything. i haven’t figured out a not-awkward way to refuse when people just unexpectedly lend books to me without me asking, though.
I have a very reduced/select group of people to whom I lend my books. Outside of that group, nobody is allowed to take them. The end. Some people think I am too intense about my books, but I have lost too many to people "borrowing" them to give an eff about other people's feelings on the matter... 🤷♀️
Thank you for telling us where to start with Robin Hobb! I definitely *can’t* continue what I was reading by her, but I want to give her work another chance. ^.^’
about not lending books to an 8 year old. not the father BUT, i would lend them i book i don't care that much about, see how they treat it, and make future decisions based on that.
Because SOMEONE didn’t allow another opinion of the undulate take in the form I’m just gonna leave my vote here as NOT the father😔 So I feel it’s safe to say that the true father is the tyrant who devoids us of our democratic right to vote AND for gaslighting us by having two alternatives with the same answers, or the father just might be the friends we made along the way, idk, who am i to judge🤷♂️
This video reminded me of a situation (that is funny in hindsight) where I was probably was the father (situation): Waited almost 2 years for a series I love to drop a chapter (Land of the Lustrous btw). Since leaks happen all the time, I explicitly stated anyone who posts spoilers will be blocked. One of my friends in a discord server posted photos of the chapter (that looked like they were taken by a nokia) and openly talked about the content of said chapter. I deleted the posts and blocked the person. 99% of the server said I was overreacting and I was being childish. Sorry I didn't want my first experience with the return of one of my favorite series to be grainy images and crappy translations. I did unblock him after I read the official translations but it was not a fun week before then.
With the topic on excitement. Long story short, I never liked movies, books, media etc as much as family, even music...found out later it was cause everything the fam showed me that was "good" was no what I wanted. It basically boiled down to me noticing the stuff, that stuff, the story plot etc that others don't care about. So when I realized stories can be deep, music can tell a story and effect your feelings, etc...i fell for it. Then when I bring up deep points to family they just care more about doing their cosmetics or listening to a tiktok on food...so they get bored...so I get merphy's take. I used to force my self to talk faster cause people in my family got bored if I said anything too long about 1 minute...Came to realize it was a bad option. People are different, and my family just wants simpler things and some book readers overthink or think right. Its why the best written book has negative reviews...so many different personalities. That said generally most seek to be more and don't just eat the lowest common idea...i know people who are happy with never leaving their town and people who wanna explore and know the entire universe...no one is wrong but sometimes you feel wrong cause your talking to the wrong people. So lately, if anyone feels like me. I just state my statement. Whether they're tiktoking while I'm talking, and if they say something I am in full attention...its not the fact they understood or cared that you said something its that you said it...one day they will catch up and enjoy your stuff...aka like all the other fads...maybe one day they wont...but what matters is that you shared your feelings...and someday someone will care...Like writing a youtube comment that is TLDR...someone will read this far and like.
as an autistic person, I do want to point out, 1 of the common autistic traits is to deeply express our interest in something (whether its books, tv shows, video games, gardening, vehicles, animals, anything) with no break, just stream of info-dumping our interests onto our social network lol. That's because for us, interests aren't just hobbies. they're not just "leisure activities", their vital stimulation for the way our brain works, & without engaging in them, our mental health would take a hit. In those scenarios, we only seem "mutually interactive", if the other person actually engages with anything we're "info-dumping" about. So, anyone here who can relate to that level of passionate info-dumping, you might be a fellow autistic
People don’t understand what it means to read and enjoy books 📚 I am the only one in my family who does love reading 📖 I mean both sides and when we start talking about books I get wound up and my family doesn’t understand it ❤❤❤
It's fine to start with Liveship Traders. I'd probably recommend to start with whichever of Fitz or Liveships sounds more interesting though. But I started with Rainwild, so what do I know.
If you aren't actively avoiding female authors*, then you aren't being consciously "assholey" (ie prejudiced). However, people with different backgrounds bring different perspectives to their writing, and it is worth diversifying your reading JUST to experience those new takes on your favorite genre (besides the benefit of supporting a more diverse set of authors monetarily). Especially if you like SFF - which I would assume, if you like Merphy's content - there are a TON of options to suit a variety of tastes. Some more recommendations for non-male authors (including cis women, trans women, non-binary people): - Almost anything by Ursula LeGuin, but the short story collection "The Birthday of the World" is a nice introduction. Or the Earthsea books, if you are mostly into fantasy. - The 'Broken Earth Trilogy' by NK Jemisin (basically an epic fantasy/sci-fi crossover that is unlike anything else I've ever read) - 'The Color of Distance' by Amy Thompson (Fun sci-fi story about an earth explorer who gets injured on an alien planet and sort of adopted - and modified - by the local rainforest-dwelling amphibian people) - 'An Unkindness of Ghosts' by Rivers Solomon (Sci-fi set on a generation ship with a social structure similar to the antebellum South. Autistic doctor protagonist) -'The Once and Future Witches' by Alix Harrow (alternate history with witches, suffragettes, labor organizers... Mixes fairy-tale tone with the realistic stuff amazingly well!) - 'Certain Dark Things' by Silvia Moreno-Garcia (urban fantasy set in Mexico city with multiple vampire "races" and a cool bio-luminescent dog) - 'The Worm and His Kings' by Hailey Piper (sort of urban-fantasy/Lovecraftian horror) - 'The Bone Shard Daughter' by Andrea Stewart (first in a trilogy featuring an Asian-inspired world with a real cool bone-based magic system) - 'The Daevabad Trilogy' by SA Chakraborty (epic fantasy with djinn) - 'A Deadly Education' by Naomi Novik (The setting has been described as "murder Hogwarts" which is very accurate. A 1st person YA that didn't annoy me, which is rare!) - 'Carnival' by Elizabeth Bear (a sci-fi spy caper with space-dragons and a second-chance romance) - 'The Gilda Stories' by Jewelle Gomez (the adventures of a former slave black lesbian vampire and her unusually wholesome vampire family) *Or black authors, queer authors, etc.
I love my Paperwhite, but no, definitely not a a good choice for reading comics. Forget screen size. E ink is fabulous for text, but not so hot for drawings.
I have to wonder if some of these were only submitted so they could get attention by being on a video... these people are like "Hi, when I was two years old I took my dad's favorite book right out of his hands, threw it into the fireplace, and smiled as I watched it burn. AITA?"
"you should give back the books that were lent to you even if you bought the rest of the series and liked it way more than the original owner" yes absolutely but this won't stop me from clinging to the first five one piece volumes my sister lent me like 10 years ago like my life depends on it (it's fine she doesn't actually want them back but she did call ownership of them a couple years ago cuz her bf wanted to read the series and it took MONTHS to get back her property to my collection. horrible time 0/10 would not recommend.)
That Celestial dragon and Avatar reference! 😅and then the FMAB one 😨 I follow a youtuber, and knowing her interests, I keep suggesting her to watch a very well regarded series even if it seemingly doesnt go anywhere. AITA? Also, do watch Mushishi
Day 2 asking Merphy to read Slam Dunk. It’s by Inoue Takehiko (Vagabond). On the surface it’s about basketball but it’s really about personal growth. It’s full of amazing characters like in Vagbond and it’s got lots of great humour
I read a lot of history which is a male dominated genre. There are some fantastic books by women, but I don't keep track of how many books I read by different genders of authors. I sometimes think I should, but usually if I want a book on a specific topic, there are only so many choices.
Never lend a book that you want back, tempest in a tea pot. Replace the book, Father. Read what you want to read, always look for new authors (never liked Fitz, btw.) In 7 decades never had a book that was worth a human friendship. AITFather? Happy reads!
Quick note on the passionate/intense thing. Maybe mention it in the beginning of the conversation that you are really passionate about this subject and that you hope that you can still discuss it even if their views might differ… your opinion doesn’t invalidate their opinion and though you may get a bit loud on the subject it isn’t an attack on them personally. Try not to take it to seriously if people get a bit defensive. The purpose of a discussion as I see it is to discover different points of view, defend your own point of view and criticizing other points of view, that you don’t agree with. Also keep in mind though that it is a conversation and you should listen to their side and keep an open mind. They might be on to something and if not maybe see if you can think of a way to change their mind without them feeling like they have to give up on their beliefs.
@prunelle9068 it's not you just swipe like you would a regular book and it resizes each panel automatically so it's like reading a really long children's book
SPOILER ALERT!! Do not read the last part of this comment if you didn’t understand the Fullmetal Alchemist reference. That Fullmetal Alchemist reference brought back all the trauma I endured watching THAT part. It hurt me A LOT!! I felt haunted…I love dogs a whole lot…I can still see its face in my mind’s eye, and my heart hurts for them still.
Silly question, but what's the actual term on the forum. Am I the father means "Am I the fucker?" "Am I the asshole" . . that googles a bit, but I'm kind of curious.
(This isn’t really who I am. This is just a fun little literary reference. See if you can guess what it is?) I’m currently writing this before I go outside to go ice-skating. I am the youngest of four beautiful sisters… well, excluding my second older sister of course since the only thing beautiful about her is her hair. She should spend less time writing stories and more time focusing on her appearance. Anyways, my family is poor and we can’t buy anything nice or go out and do anything extravagigantic. One day, my rich next door neighbor invited my older sisters to go with him to see a theatrical play. I wanted to go too because I never get to go out and have fun like rich people do, but that ugly second older sister of mine said I couldn’t come. I begged and begged, but she wouldn’t budge. She even had the nerve to belittle me and call me selfish! After they all left, I was so angry at my older sister that I snuck into her room, dug out that stupid manuscript of hers that she had been working on for a long time, and then burned it in the stove to get revenge on her for not inviting me to the play. When my sisters arrived home and found out what I did, my second older sister got so angry at me and slapped me across the face. I cried and cried and nobody took my side in this incident. Finally, I begradingly decided to apologize to my sister, but she refused to forgive me. No matter how many times I say I’m sorry, she just continues to ignore me. I DESERVE her forgiveness! AITF?
AITF for asking an author at a con if his book was available at the library? I felt really bad for saying that but then his friend bullied me into buying his book and I haven't touched it in like 2 years 😂
Things that give you feelings of power:
1. Money
2. Status
3. Having your comment show up in a Merphy Napier video
When my One Piece bad take showed up in that video, I was so tickled and I am still riding that high
Those interludes 🤣 ATLA was amazing!
That Way of Kings comment is absolutely on point. 😂😂 Sums the story.
Way to go friend!
That person who spilled hot chocolate on the cover and blamed their brother literally made a sitcom situation out of it, usually a sign it's your fault lol.
"Caw caw clocked me in the face" really broke me.
Zuko really got everything and everyone against him lmao I never realized that
He was only acting like an obsessive psychopath for two years, what's the big deal?
The time Zuko was crying and shouting at sky, asking the lightning to hit him....many people say that he was talking to his father, but I really felt like he was shouting at the world
I'm a giant dude and people always misinterpret my excitement in conversation. I try to be purposely monotone to avoid scaring/upsetting people.
With the male author one I don’t think anyone should force themselves to read a book they don’t think they’ll like just because of who wrote it.
That being said there’s absolutely no harm in investigating if there are any books by female authors that you think you’ll like.
The first interlude literally had me laughing, out loud, for multiple minutes. Needless to say i replayed it 5 times xD
The one about destroying their friend's copy of Words of Radiance, then shifting the blame to a brother and poisoning their relationship, over _Words of freaking Radiance,_ is the funniest thing ever. Big Sadeas energy there.
The look of pain on Merphy's face during the Fullmetal Alchemist one brings me joy
Especially when she realized what it was referencing. 😂 When I realized, I busted up laughing.
Those interludes were just, *chef's kiss* perfection.
The comments which describe a character without giving away the series are hilarious! Please make it a thing on its own, I want to have a go at it. 😂
The Celestial Dragon one was funny af 🤣
Really random and a throwback... I had a dream last night that you got lost in the Marina Trench to mermaids 😢 I was devastated! Anyways thanks for the amazing recommendation/nightmares 😂
that's an amazing dream!
@@merphynapier42 It took my 30 seconds after waking up to realize it was a dream, but I was so relieved when I finally did 😂
Thanks for teaching us to be better communicators and boundry makers! Maybe not the actual goal of the video, but we all need to start somewhere

We need a full video of interlude material. That shit has the most creative writting I've seen since the dawn of me.

My favorite one was with crow man punching that person.😂
Thanks Merphy another fun AITA video...KUDOS!!!
That interlude A+ material. Good work people

These videos are so funny LMAO I feel you, I also have the tendency to get to passionate about my fave book, shows etc :D
Hobb is wonderful! All the respect to her name!
HA! Nice options on the Undulate question on the form, Merphy Napier!
Why can we all just calmly talk it out and have tea and read books! Then no one would be the father 😊
Calm isn't always possible when one is passionate about books, but yes that would be nice.
The giving other ppl room point is so true often ppl make their own groups in parties and events
about not lending books to an 8 year old. not the father BUT, i would lend them i book i don't care that much about, see how they treat it, and make future decisions based on that.
Are You the Father is BACK!!
This was a really fun vid! You are always a breath of fresh air Merphy!
"But start with The Liveship Traders", did Fitz suffer (and he really did suffer) in vain?

11:20 this moment was precious lmaoooo hahahahahahahahahahaha
Me literally putting together the Comic/Mythologically accurate Pantheon, the Dog Breeder, and Burna Boy exactly at the same time as Merphy…

- 'A Deadly Education' by Naomi Novik (The setting has been described as "murder Hogwarts" which is very accurate. A 1st person YA that didn't annoy me, which is rare!)
- 'Carnival' by Elizabeth Bear (a sci-fi spy caper with space-dragons and a second-chance romance)
- 'The Gilda Stories' by Jewelle Gomez (the adventures of a former slave black lesbian vampire and her unusually wholesome vampire family)
*Or black authors, queer authors, etc.
I was not prepared to laugh this hard. 😂
Great Vlog!
This was so fun 😂 not the black magic 😂
I love my Paperwhite, but no, definitely not a a good choice for reading comics.
Forget screen size. E ink is fabulous for text, but not so hot for drawings.
Got that fma ref early. Top ruthless evil mindbroken scientist char.
Put him on the same level as the next ref.
That moment when Merphy firgured out the FMA one and just slowed down her reading lol
I have to wonder if some of these were only submitted so they could get attention by being on a video... these people are like "Hi, when I was two years old I took my dad's favorite book right out of his hands, threw it into the fireplace, and smiled as I watched it burn. AITA?"
18:09 I agree with you Merphy about that order. Mainly because the rest of RotE series are written in first person which i don''t really like. 😅
"you should give back the books that were lent to you even if you bought the rest of the series and liked it way more than the original owner"
yes absolutely but this won't stop me from clinging to the first five one piece volumes my sister lent me like 10 years ago like my life depends on it
(it's fine she doesn't actually want them back but she did call ownership of them a couple years ago cuz her bf wanted to read the series and it took MONTHS to get back her property to my collection. horrible time 0/10 would not recommend.)
That outro went from stumbly to JUST CHAOTIC CUT it’s very you 😂
That Celestial dragon and Avatar reference! 😅and then the FMAB one 😨
I follow a youtuber, and knowing her interests, I keep suggesting her to watch a very well regarded series even if it seemingly doesnt go anywhere. AITA?
Also, do watch Mushishi
7:00 is you literally solving my biggest problem in life
Day 2 asking Merphy to read Slam Dunk.
It’s by Inoue Takehiko (Vagabond). On the surface it’s about basketball but it’s really about personal growth. It’s full of amazing characters like in Vagbond and it’s got lots of great humour
Number 10 - No! BAD! Always and forever, too SOON!
5:52 Shallan moment
This was a lot of fun
I read a lot of history which is a male dominated genre. There are some fantastic books by women, but I don't keep track of how many books I read by different genders of authors. I sometimes think I should, but usually if I want a book on a specific topic, there are only so many choices.
Lol, what if you loan out your book to a friend who you know will likely return it damaged and therefore have to buy you a new copy 😂
14:00 Your father is the father!
The FMA one killed me omg
I know it's not 100% the same but most kindle and e-readers will zoom manga so you are only seeing one panel at a time so you don't have to squint
@prunelle9068 it's not you just swipe like you would a regular book and it resizes each panel automatically so it's like reading a really long children's book
I've only watched 1 ep of ATLA and I understood the ref immediately lmao
Me when i use undulate in my writing a lot: 😢 guess im the father
With manga I only read physical books unless it is a 100+ like OP
My mum and sister are big readers - wibta if i tried to trick them into reading fantasy!
13:00 *insert meme about how to upset a fullmetal alchemist fan*
10:11 what book was recommended?
Avatar and One Piece ones were genius 🤓😊
So, most of my books are female leads but they're also written mostly by male authors.
So, do they cancel out?
SPOILER ALERT!! Do not read the last part of this comment if you didn’t understand the Fullmetal Alchemist reference.
That Fullmetal Alchemist reference brought back all the trauma I endured watching THAT part.
It hurt me A LOT!! I felt haunted…I love dogs a whole lot…I can still see its face in my mind’s eye, and my heart hurts for them still.
🧡📚🧡📚🧡📚🧡
Silly question, but what's the actual term on the forum.
Am I the father means "Am I the fucker?" "Am I the asshole" . . that googles a bit, but I'm kind of curious.
please someone what is the great man interlude??
these were a blast to go through!
One Piece
AITF?
Can't find the original video. Does anyone have a link?😊

Plenty of great female fantasy authors out there but really Merph? Everybody should start Robin Hobb with the soulcrushing experience of Fitz.....
A few of those were just awful but I don't understand how most of them were even a problem.
Read what you want and don't let society tell you what you have to read. Robin Hobb is good though
AITF for asking an author at a con if his book was available at the library? I felt really bad for saying that but then his friend bullied me into buying his book and I haven't touched it in like 2 years 😂
As an author, requesting a book at a library is actually a really good thing for authors! Most greatly encourage it :)
I don't know about the male author one - if it's fantasy i feel like you have to work hard to only pick up male authors.
