I don't usually laugh out loud while reading by myself but the Ryuunosuke sunset got me so good. It's my lockscreen. One of the best one piece moments for me. Peak comedy.
I know you did a "bad tropes done well" video fairly recently, but I would totally be interested in a follow-up if you want to continue that discussion! It's always fascinating to dig into what actually makes these tropes off-putting to so many people, and how those issues can be avoided.
I've been thinking about this! I don't know what the interest level would be in something like that but I'm going to play with a discussion on it and see if I can make an interesting video out of it :)
@@merphynapier42 I absolutely despise instalove with no build up, or the characters fall in love when the main character is strong and has a reason not to. I have read a book where the main character was strong but took a period of 3 books to get in a relationship. I’d love for you to do another video on these flaws.
I'm SO happy you started the Magicians. I read it at 18 and read along with the releases so I grew up with the characters but it holds such a close place to my heart despite Quentin's flaws. It's almost too relatable.
yup. its like he copied it from a person in real life. and i love that he is not a generic NPC perfect character like most main characters are written.
Really love the pretty outdoor spaces, but the focus of the background jumping in and out (undulating, perhaps?) is pretty distracting. Totally agree about Fruits Basket though
The Fruits basket thing kinda pains me a bit because the main reason I got interested in it and ended up watching the whole anime (and really liking most of it) was because of your video on the manga
Totally understand your reaction to Fitz from the first trilogy. The reason I love Hobb so much is how she writes characters and how the can evolve in this massive story. I think she writes Fitz in such a way that it's totally valid for you to not like him, but without getting into spoilers I think in the 3rd trilogy he does change, he's older and he's reflected on what's happened to him, or at least tried to. I'm not claiming you'll suddenly love him, but I bet you'd enjoy the books.
@Merphy Napier I really love the series and will probably do a reread at some point. It's hard because Hobb characters go through so much trauma and are written so well that they feel like friends. More than once, I had to put a book down for a day or two before I could continue. We're all fools in the end!
@@merphynapier42 I think Hobb is a fantastic writer, but her Fitz/Fool trilogies basically made me go: book one=oh dear, where is this going that's horrible; book two=this is AMAZING and horrible I love where this is going; book three=Nooooo... why did you do THAT?
I agree. Fitz does grow so much from the 1st trilogy to the 3rd. He is pretty insuferable in the 1st trilogy, but you see his growth in the 2nd quite a bit, and in the 3rd he is actually a really mature and fantastic character.
I don't know why I've never recommended this before but I think you'd really enjoy Shadows House. It's the prefect combination of cute, wholesome but also creepy, mysterious and gothic. The Magic system is also very interesting. It's a manga, but its colored. Most of the characters sort of dress like Perona. Personally I really like the artsyle, it feels very unique (just google it, its great).
I had watched the 1st season of the anime, then wanted more so i read the manga, cant go back into watching the anime loved the art style too much and so much more plot in the manga
I know!! The thing is is that I also kinda dropped it for a bit and decided to give it another try and the ending totally redeemed any doubts I had about it and it went from being very meh to being one of my favorites
I loved Magicians too! One of my favorites cause it's like, what if the characters from Harry Potter and Chronicles of Narnia had to actually deal with the mental ramifications of going through what they've gone through.
Wow Merphy, I went down this dark alley on the way home and used my laptop as a light. I saw a silhouette sneaking close 😮behind and turned my laptop light, towards the anonymous person’s direction. They hissed and pulled away, and begin to talk. A familiar voice begins talking “Ah!! surfshark,”my heart skipped a beat and I found myself backed up against a wall. My mind is scrambling for thought and then it all came clear. “Merphy?…” I muddled under my breath. The silhouette clumsily falls over trash cans. I shined the laptop light towards their face, and It was that “SNEAKYMERPHY.” In panic she tripped over several MORE trash cans and scurries off. As she ran I hear a faint saying in the distance, “Read the Gentle bastards series,” and her silhouette disappeared in the dark alley. Surfshark saved my life. The rest of the walk down the alley was chill, and I picked up my one of the copies of “The Lies of Locke Lamora,” from one of the trash cans she tripped over on the way home. Happy anniversary! After nearly 30 years of love and frustration, I'm about to finish with the last of Robin's series. I'll say the last two books are chocked full of characters from Liveships and Rainwilds, and worth reading for the Liveship storylines alone. But Fitz will stay frustratingly fitz-like the entire time. One more point in favor of finishing all; half the POV's of the last 3 books are a Character you'll probably love
Did you read the Inheritance Cycle back in the day? Mr Paolini revealing the 5th book coming out this fall has me very excited. It was never the best series, but I have a lot of memories with it.
I *loved* the original Fruits Baskets anime but I really couldn't get into the manga. I love The Magicians trilogy. The first book is admittedly difficult to read because Q is a horny bratty teen/early 20 something but I am still not over how well the last book tied up the whole freaking series it was so dang good.
I am very happy to see you loving the magicians. I am surprised to see it. But the love/hate relationship makes sense. I recognise my love for this series is very subjective and completely about what it means to me. I don't recommend it for people though.
Omg I'm so happy you like the magicians, I finished the trilogy and without getting up I started a reread because I loved it so much. I mean, it's bad but I love it so much.
I’ve only read Assassin’s Apprentice but I already agree about Fitz 😅 at this point, I’m just trying to finish the first trilogy to get to Liveship Traders
Speaking of upcoming live action adaptations, I’m really looking forward to the Percy Jackson show on Disney+ and I think if any adaption has the potential to be as good or better than the original, it’s that one.
As much as I did enjoy the beginnings of the first book (I only stopped reading it due to Stamania reasons but do plan to go back to it when it's back to when I can read more consistantly), I think I do understand your dislike of Fritz. The beginnings has him read very "Fae-thinking", so emotionally you can't really connect with him, and as he grows older it's almost like a Fae is trying to be human but not fully understanding to be human and doing really stupid choices. It can get absolutely fustrating when you just want someone actually be a *person*, a person with feeling and emotion and actually do things you're suppose to do. With what I understand from the beginning, him being "Fae-like" as he connects more with nature and animals than he does with people is actually a bit of the point as the Fae are more connected to the way of Nature than how we humans percive the world. (My guess from the Wild-ling comparisons), but I'm not going to blame you for still not having fun because Fae in modern writing does *not* sound like that and there's a bit more of a dyamic interaction. I noticed in Celtic Lore, old Japanese Folklore And some of the Norse folklore (along with reading the King of Elfland's Daughter) the Fae act a bit more like what Fritz does than what modern fae do.
I slogged my way through Hyperion - I really didn't start liking it until I was about two thirds of the way through. Still wasn't happy with the ending, but I started to like it more and more a few days after I finished it. I know a lot of people love it - I liked it overall and admired the writing. But I can definitely understand why someone would not like it or just even have a really hard time finishing the book.
I highly recommend trying tawny man before rain wilds, I have seen plenty of opinion where people who originally disliked Fitz like him more in those books onwards.
I respect Merph for having actual unpopular opinions. I was genuinely taken aback from the takes on Hak, Ryunosuke, and Fitz! 😂But it's okay, the take on the Little Women movie made everything better.
Hey Merphy, I thought that for the dear authors series, you could do a video on things like gods or other mythical beings with a lot of power. What are some limitations to their powers that readers like to see? When does a god become so overpowered that any problem in the story could be solved with a wave of a hand?
Please go ahead and read the Rain Wild Chronicles! Yes, you will be spoiled for a major event from the Tawny Man trilogy, but if it’s holding you back from enjoying more Hobb then I, as a random viewer, say don’t worry about it. Love your videos!
I also love The Magicians. I had to take breaks during those books because they got a little too depressed and apathetic to marathon, but I enjoyed the writing and story.
I have trouble with the Fitz books too, but it's less because of him and more because of how others in the books treat him. Like Robin Hobb is a master at gaslighting her own characters, and it actually makes me incredibly frustrated haha. Fitz is constantly berated and gaslit for pretty much trying to make any decision or for even wanting things. Makes it incredibly frustrating to read. Like I find myself getting angry on his behalf hahaha. Him as a character is whatever. He is a dumb kid, so his decisions seem to contextually make more sense to me than they otherwise would I think. Kind of the same as with Althea Vestrit from Liveship. I struggled reading her chapters less because of her and more because of how she was treated.
Definitely understand what you mean about Fitz, although I personally love his whole story. Live Ships are my absolute favourite series so I can see why you would want to do that. Unfortunately though, if you skip the Tawny Man series you’ll miss some pretty important story arcs, really don’t recommend
Hey Murphy. I do understand the hate around the magicians but the author has said that the first book is the introduction to the world, book 2 is the the exploration of the world, and then book 3 is the destruction (Not a spoiler)
I was the opposite of you and did NOT want to read the Liveship trilogy and did skip it to read more Fitz. I regretted it when certain aspected of the books I just didn’t get from references from books I hadn’t read. Once I finished the 2nd Fitz trilogy I went back and forced myself to read Liveship traders to understand future context. If you ever plan on reading the final Realm of the Elderlings trilogy you need to read EVERYTHING to understand major plot points.
like some others here I'm so curious about how you fell out of love with Fruits Basket! some of my love for it definitely comes from nostalgia but I feel like I can see the flaws now.. I don't mind the tropes personally but things like poor pacing come to mind. and a certain relationship or two gets on my nerves lol
Huh, what a coincidence, currently reading Hyperion for the first time and yeah I get what you mean. Story telling style took awhile for me to like but I started enjoying it because of just how different each story is in tone. Scholar's tale definitely hooked me in with the Detective's tale being a second.
It’s understandable not to like Fitz, but I’m not sure we are supposed to. He’s an orphan boy who is not fully accepted by anyone, trained to kill and keep secrets and to be used by the royal family-his own kin. He’s this object to be manipulated by whims of others. How can you expect a teenaged boy not to be f’d up at maintaining personal relationships when some of us with less difficulty can’t do that at 40? He is the most human of protagonists I’ve personally read. Even as he grows as a person and becomes wiser, he’s still Fitz, and you may want to choke him out sometimes, but he goes through a very human experience. I just have a soft spot for him.
Totally agree on Hyperion. It's one of my partner's favorite books, and so I pushed through it, but if it weren't for that I wouldn't have finished it. Also agree about Fitz, but I read for the Fool. :)
the outdoorsy filming is really cool, it's probably a pain for you, but I really enjoyed it :) also, I am usually in the books are better than the movie camp but holy molly have I been disappointed recently by reading the books of media I have enjoyed (i.e. The Alienist, Little Women, and The Haunting of Hill House were all done so much better as shows/movies).
HOW CAN YOU NOT LIKE HYPERION!!!!!!!!!! Cradle opinion is fine, read the travelers gate series first so was a bit more forgiving for cradle, blazed through it. The Magicians was great!
Ah man, I was just starting to love this channel, then you mentioned Hyperion! 😂I finished it last month and loved it enough that I rushed out and got the sequels. But then I heard you mention the Malazan Empire books in some videos and that inspired me to give it another chance and now I'm loving it---I'll come back to the Hyperion books later. And, as someone who read the second Fitz series (Tawny Man Trilogy) this past year, I don't know if I remember anything specific about the Fitz character that would make me say read it now. But it was still a good story, and I hope you get to it eventually. So keep up the good work. Love the channel!
My answers...I apologise in advance 1- Mistborn (might finish the series at a later date) 2- idk first fifteen lives of Harry August? 3- Not rlly a love triangle but Althea's final love (I think she should have been single) 4- Horror 5- Brashen 6- Veronica Roth 7- The barbarian 8- Gentlemen Bastards (sorry Murphy) 9- None
Ive personally been curious if you would ever review "The magicians" I bought the books after watching the "Syfy" adaptation personally I enjoyed.. but I also don't read novels much anymore, not since I was publicly shamed at a family reunion by some uncles because of the book series I was reading at that time
My unpopular opinion is that I don't see what everyone else sees in _Discworld._ Fun books, sure, but I've not really enjoyed the books everyone claims are the best, and the ones I've really liked are either stand-alones (I quite liked _Pyramids_ and was sad there's no sequel) or aren't considered great (the first two books are fun fantasy parody). I have read _Guards, Guards!_ and _Wyrd Sisters_ and _Mort_ so I at least feel like I understand what the series is about, and enough to know it's not for me.

How dare you Merphy! 😂😂
Omg I'm so happy you like the magicians, I finished the trilogy and without getting up I started a reread because I loved it so much. I mean, it's bad but I love it so much.
Please do a video on your final thoughts on The Magicians. Loved that series, both TV and books. Would be interested to know where you land on it.
I am with you about Fitz! I can’t read those books.
Okay now I need a full review for the magicians because I need further elaboration
Fitz grows on you. I really recommend reading the whole Elderling series.
Oh man gotta live this ads, it's so good 😂😂😂
I 100% agree about Hyperion. There is the Scholar’s tale which is pure gold and then there is everything else that’s a drag.
The shrike is such an interesting part of the book, definitely memorable. As well as the crosses and creepy people near the cave
I like your takes because I know that we don't always agree, to be honest. I get to see a different perspective on things that way.
The video's content was already great. Your background settings added an unique atmosphere, very nice!
I was skipping through the add and the STOP legit spooked me
hahahahahaha, I love that you went there with Ryunosuke
On the painted dragon from One Piece, they're all just drawings, but we invest in them and mourn their deaths.
The Prequel to Priory Of The Orange Tree. I am not far from a big ol' DNF because it's just droning on, and I loved Priory Of The Orange Tree.
Hey Murphy. I do understand the hate around the magicians but the author has said that the first book is the introduction to the world, book 2 is the the exploration of the world, and then book 3 is the destruction (Not a spoiler)
Man, am I ever with you on Cradle! I got through book 5, thinking this is all going to come together now, right? But for me, it did not.
The way you describe books that you don't like and didn't finish makes them sound better than my favorite books.
Loved the green screen backdrops. Some awesome visual presenting skills there 😄
I was the opposite of you and did NOT want to read the Liveship trilogy and did skip it to read more Fitz.
Happy anniversary! I hope for more great years to come.
Love the outdoor setting. ❤️
Woah that's an awesome aesthetic hope all is well Merphy
the outdoorsy filming is really cool, it's probably a pain for you, but I really enjoyed it :)
also, I am usually in the books are better than the movie camp but holy molly have I been disappointed recently by reading the books of media I have enjoyed (i.e.
My answers...I apologise in advance

9- None
Darn, I just re-upped my surf shark subscription 2 days ago.
Ive personally been curious if you would ever review "The magicians" I bought the books after watching the "Syfy" adaptation personally I enjoyed.. but I also don't read novels much anymore, not since I was publicly shamed at a family reunion by some uncles because of the book series I was reading at that time
shame on them or that :(
My unpopular opinion is that I don't see what everyone else sees in _Discworld._ Fun books, sure, but I've not really enjoyed the books everyone claims are the best, and the ones I've really liked are either stand-alones (I quite liked _Pyramids_ and was sad there's no sequel) or aren't considered great (the first two books are fun fantasy parody). I have read _Guards, Guards!_ and _Wyrd Sisters_ and _Mort_ so I at least feel like I understand what the series is about, and enough to know it's not for me.
