The one review that used the word anhedonic, it’s actually a great word. Anhedonia is the inability to feel joy, especially as it relates to things that you used to enjoy. It basically describes the numbness that comes from depression, but isn’t exclusive to it. A sort of organic anesthesia for emotions
Ohh, so kind of the opposite of hedonism? The words feel like they relate ethimologically Or I could, you know, just google it... Thanks for telling us, btw. I wanted to look the word up but kept watching and forgot lol
3:41 It is now my headcanon that Merphy walks like this everywhere. I'm going to think of this every time I see one of her nature walk B film interludes.
Literally how I felt about 3 chapters into Gideon the Ninth. It's literally about an abused child slave growing to love her psychotic abuser. I was spitting bile by the time I put the book down.
@@maximwb237 Oh yeah, manga is in another category altogether. (Usagi Drop, anyone?) There's a lot of authors in that field actively trying to justify slavery. Creepy. But it gets so much worse. I remember coming across a cool-sounding anime when I was a child of 11 "sailing the high seas" so to speak. "Elfen Lied? So it's a fantasy story with elves? That's cool!" It was not cool. That and other interactions with Japanese media left me really sensitive about tonal inconsistency in stories. Spoilers (and warning for NSFL) to spare anyone who wants to look into Elfen Lied; It was a rom-com about a pair of cousins taking care of an amnesiac girl they found on the beach, interspersed with scenes of children being brutally tortured and having their limbs ripped off. The author has a thing about girls dying in horrible ways; the same person made Brynhildr in the Darkness.
@@Hoobastomp Fr manga can be so awesome yet it can also go so low with those kind of stories, Usagi Drop has to be the worst ending I have ever seen in any form of media (and that's saying a lo when I also read Domestic Girlfriend and Prison School), how can you ruin so badly what was such a wholesome plot and make it into basically a grooming story? Like really how do you come up with that ending? Elfen Lied I can luckily say that, even tho I did watch it, I was also about 11 years old when I did and I'm now old enough to be able to block it out of my memory, I really can't remember anything about it other than it being really weird. Also, the slavery thing you mention is the main reason why I have barely seen or read any form of isekai.
@@britneynicolewrites It's def more relatable if you have kids, but it's still super sweet, funny, and endearing enough to stand on its own! I watch it more than my kids tbh 🤣
@@00ammy00 Aww! 💕 Thats my fave, makes me sob every time! Honestly, I think if I could trust anything to help people empathize with parents of young kids, it's this show. It really communicates what it's like SO well!
I know Merphy isn’t his mum (obviously 😂😂), but when Korey goes “OW!” And she says, without blinking or a seconds thought “you’re fine” is the most mum thing I’ve ever seen 😂😂. Is merphy an older sibling? I can see her being one 😂😂
You two seem to have very different ways of processing information. Makes for interesting videos. I tried to read The Magicians series and only got partway into the second book before I had to quit to preserve my own sanity. Usually I never leave a book unfinished once I start reading it but that one was just too much.
I got one that Merphy didn't! 😁 The condesending of servants and peasants gave it away. I don't know if the protagonist grows during the series, but she was difficult to like in the first book. You guys are always so fun to watch, loved that video :)

I think the point of Monday’s Not Coming (and other books similar to it) being simply written is that they are meant to be accessible to teens going through stuff who aren’t typically readers. They are to help kids through difficult stuff and the kids going through difficult stuff haven’t always had the opportunity or time to learn to read complex writing.
In defense of the Guards Guards reviewer: Terry Pratchett doesn't have the _worst_ humor but he DOES have _British_ humor, which can sometimes look exactly the same
Re: the word ‘hates’ in the review for Lost Metal… autocorrect doesn’t like past tense, and will often change it, so the person probably typed ‘hated’, and then autowrong changed it to ‘hates’.
Greedy neighbors learn their cranky old neighbor is both rich and near-death. Clumsy, incompetent people doing things to other people while always hoping for some windfall from god only knows where. So much pathos I almost cried.
Merphy, for the second review to question membership in the human race, good lord. I was s glad when Cory said it wasn't Hitchhikers. My step dad just got me the first Hitchhiker book so I'm glad that wasn't it. To get over an experience I endured a friend suggested Beartown. In your and Cory's opinion should I read it?
Do you like sarcasm? Or very dry, British humor in general? Do you mind that the world building is described so viscerally, and yet still manages to just escape anything you can fully picture in your mind's eye? Do you like Doctor Who? Do you mind a main character that loved his boring life up until the start of the story so much that it takes him a couple of books to not be vaguely traumatized by the whiplash of finding himself in space, and not having a home to go back to? If any of those questions repulse you, you might not want to read these books. I get that people hate things being nonsensical for nonsensicalities sake, but so much of it is juxtaposing the MC's old life to the one he's been thrown into, that it makes sense in its own way. *Edit* a word.
I'm really beginning to fear trying to read anything by Octavia Butler. Between what I have heard of Fledgeling and Dawn, I am thoroughly frightened of her work and I'm not sure if I will like it.
Great fun. This is the second Butler book I've heard about with questionable scenes and neterial. Why does she get so much praise if she's so off-putting at times?
Went into The Magicians with such high hopes. Only finished the first book because I was convinced I would find why so many love it. I could not. Gave away the trilogy with relish. Thank goodness that awful story is purged from my memory.
Title claims to be about Korey roasting Merphy when we all know it’s actually just Merphy passively bullying him.

Sounds like me.
and it does describe the characters well. I totally agree with that review
I love that Korey knows so much about the books just from editing and not from reading
Oh man I love these. I'd also live to see you guessing 5 star reviews on books you HATED
I love that he's watching Bluey. Bandit has a great deal to teach dad's everywhere.
Seeing you and Korey quibble is always the highlight of my day.

Love this series, I have an idea for the next one: do the normal video but bonus round with super vague reviews of books already done in the video.

I DNF'd "The Magicians" a few hours before seeing this video and so instantly thought of it when that review was read 😂
Loved it! Now we could do this about opinions in the comment section in social media, because I take those just as seriously. LOL!

Korey in the house! He was in good form this video.

He's such a genius. Very few authors have managed to create such imaginative works.
You should try the Magicians tv series, and make a comparison video
Imo a series that was better on tv than the book
This was hilarious! Love it!
When Merphy says stop it... I lost my mind 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Merphy: The Lost Metal!

Another great ad! What was Korey watching on the computer?
Bluey!
Who else watches Merphy's videos and then Daniel Greene's videos 30 minutes later?
Do you time that with a stop watch?
Yes and more collabs please.

I look forward to your new channel doing watch reviews with Korey now that your booktube days are done.
I'd recommend "I am not a serial killer"
Need Korey to make a booktube channel or a Bluey review channel...

Yeah, Dawn's a weird book. Very disturbing, but I bought and read the entire trilogy, which I almost never do with books
But... 'A Natural History of Dragons' has TWO maps.....
My goal is for one of my one star reviews to show up in a Merphey video😂
what is this crazy talk? A natural history of dragons is not sci fi its just fantasy. If anything its alt history fantasy not sci fi
