It is very difficult not to love Michael. He is just a good man, and it has nothing to do with the sword he wields. Curious how Merphy will react when she learns more about the swords.
@@christianemden7637Oh yes, whatever people may come up as arguments against Paragon characters, there's still character like Michael who are reminders of just how great they can work in a story.
@@BrendanKODParagon characters are extra awesome when they're not the internally conflicted main character, and the setting is so grey that a shining beacon of light stands out that much more
It begins as, "The story of a detective, who's ability as a wizard makes him a better detective" and then evolves overtime into, "The story of a Wizard who's ability as a detective makes him a better wizard." It really grows and goes places.
James Marsters narrates the audiobooks. His voice is terrific as Dresden. I borrow the audiobooks from my library app. Marsters is the actor playing Spike in Buffy the Vampire Slayer
@@penguinpryncessProduction quality improves in the audiobooks. In the earlier ones you can hear a lot of his ‘mouth’ sounds. It becomes more professional later (not his fault, it’s just how they recorded).
Agreed, Marsters is excellent! I read all of the books first the old fashioned way, and now play the Marsters versions just for fun when I'm driving or doing laundry, etc. He is just soooo good!
GET THE AUDIOBOOKS! Honestly, the audiobooks are performed- not read- PERFORMED by James Masters! I had no idea who that actor was before being laid up in the hospital when a friend sent me the first few audiobooks. I was hooked. I even went to a svi Fi convention just to tell Masters how much I appreciate and enjoy his performances in this series. He was thrilled to hear from a Dresden fan- I guess everyone else was there for his Buffy The Vampire Slayer role. Anyway, my highest possible recommendation for the audiobooks- you'll experience the novels you've already read in a whole new light- and with a lot more maturity, angst and anger than the printed words might imply. Like us, James Masters is a fan.
One of Harry's greatest strengths is his friends. The Dresden Files is definitely an ensemble story; Butcher loves to reuse characters, and minor ones grow and develop alongside Harry. An example: you meet Waldo Butters in Grave Peril, but he really comes into his own during Dead Beat. The Alphas that you met in Fool Moon also continue to grow and evolve over many books. And Michael! He is central to so much of what happens in the future of the series. So glad to hear that you're going to keep going with it.
Merphy said she would only be reading one book per month. Mark my words folks, the next vlog there will at least be two more Dresden books. She's going to blast through the whole series. Once you're hooked, it's impossible to let it go.
She’s got a lot to read. But yeah from about 6 on I can’t see how someone wouldn’t want to immediately jump into the next book. I’m Very interested to hear her take on Summer Knight.
It's always a bittersweet joy to see someone "discover" Dresden. Joyful to watch the excitement of finding a series that is well done, sad that I wish I could experience that first time again.
I think your reactions to the first 3 books really sum up why a lot of people say you need to work through the first few books. Its not that they are bad, more that as the series progressess it gets *so* much better. Couple this with the fact that bevause the later books are so improved, it paints the first few in a worse light. A sort of reverse rosetinted goggles.
I don't think it is that the first few books are bad, it is just that once this series starts rolling it is so damn good. This is my single favorite series.
I agree whole-heartedly. I always enjoyed the first two "weaker" books. Sure, Jim wrote them when in college, but that doesn't make then *bad*. It has a lot of "youthful Harry" charm, like his boob obsession cause he hasn't been laid in literal years. It also has ground rules that are still followed very harshly even in the most recent books (Peace Talks, at time of writing).
The first murder scene as Harry describes it made me think of him entering the room and first seeing the woman's figure from one side then he further enters the room from the victim's right. Her breast would be immediately apparent from the right, then as he moves further into the room he sees her ribs broken outwards on the other side of her body. Any "love" potion from Bob would have to be a lust potion. The spirit doesn't know what love is.
Came here to mention these points. Each of the examples Merphy has taken issue with has an in world/in text explanation that I feel makes the criticisms...not entirely unjust... but somewhat misrepresented. 1. The on-screen text literally refers to the lower rib cages in the torso I.e below where the outline of the breasts stops. This sort of dueling perspective is something Butcher often employees often to try and lighten the impact of these types of gruesome scenes, and at this point we don't have a mouthy little ME to help diffuse that with scene appropriate comedy. 2. As you mentioned the love potion is one of Bob's recipe - of course with this characters personality a love potion is going to be a stimulant for the libido. 3. Tara is already alluded to as being a supernatural creature at this point of the story. I think it's a fairly intuitive move for the character to make in terms of causing a distraction particularly given the type of creature she is. 4. We are agreed on Michael. He very quickly became a favourite character. I love everything about the way religion is used from that perspective. Overall the series is literally Dresden's recounting of the things that happened throughout his life and I think it's somewhat expected that if you're looking back at your life you have an exaggerated or would linger on memories that were pleasant or a somewhat pleasant memory for you (here I'm specifically referring to the affects of the love potion with Susan and Tara's little show in the spotlight)
@@jadziaspeed50 The criticisms are definitely valid but like you said, a bit misrepresented, especially the text mentions that the love potion may just turn out to be a lust potion, and Harry, at least in these early books, is still quite a bit chauvinistic and has to brought back to earth by the women in his life.
@@jadziaspeed50 Jim has very specifically stated that Harry is an unreliable narrator. We only see things through his eyes except for a few short stories. The one from Murph's perspective on Harry was awesome
IIRC Harry didn't have champagne and swapped in tequila which would have an effect on the potion created. Explained, but not needed to advance the story lol.
As others have mentioned, the audiobooks for this series are FANTASTIC! James Marsters IS Harry Dresden - he does such a great job representing Harry's personality and dry sense of humor. I just fell in love with Harry. And his representations of the whole cast of characters is amazing. Toot toot and Bob are particular favorites. I started listening to the audiobooks at Book 3 and I'm not sure if it's because the books get better or the narration just added so much to the story, but I fell in love with the books at that point. Probably a combination of both. Great review of the books Merphy - it made me want to start a re-listen of the series immediately!
I so agree, the audiobooks are utterly awesome. James Marsters just gets so much better over time. I can not imagine the books without him being Harry.
I do think that the narration improves as the books go on. You can hear real differences in how Marsters will use breathing to punctuate scenes, and also how he gets more and more comfortable with narration as the series goes on. Not to mention his voices get better too. It was a thing that really made me love the audio series; we're getting to watch both Butcher and Marsters improve at their crafts at the same time, and it's cool being along for that ride.
Your reaction to Grave Peril is pretty much why people say "you need to get over the first two books". They aren't bad by any means, they are fun to read, but they are also where Butcher is still trying to find his way. Grave Peril is where the series takes off. Have fun reading the rest of the series, you're in for a wild ride. :)
In my opinion one only needs to get through storm front, I think fool moon is already so much better. And Im a sucker for both the Sidhe the Denarians.
@@christianemden7637 thats a very interesting take because most people I have discussed the series with tend to rate fool moon as either the worst or second worst of the entire series
I think once you hit Summer Knight you'll see what everyone was taking about. I love books 1-3 but Butcher really hits his stride as a writer in Book 4. Glad to see you enjoying the series. It's amazing in my opinion.
I actually read Summer Knight first when I discovered there were books! (Yes, I saw the series first ... which I also have.) He definitely hits his stride with that one and then the stride lengthens ...
The remarkable thing about the Dresden series is that each book gets better. When I started reading Dresden, I thought no way Butcher can keep up this progression, and then early in book 6, Blood Rites, I thought here it is. This is where the author can't keep the pace of improvement, but as the story progressed, Butcher proved me wrong. Not only has he plotted the story arc impressively, his writing skills continue to develop. This combination produces the perpetual growth of the story.
@@knave_pt8272 Apparently he actually has all of the books at least loosely plotted out ... I'm waiting impatiently for the next one and just read the novella The Law for a Dresden fix ...
Weird bc I would give the same advice in the other direction. The series starts falling off with the cringe elements only cringier and he can't handle a larger scale plot and just goes off the rails.
When I'm turning someone onto the series, I do give em the caveat that storm from was literally his first book, and while completely enjoyable, it gets better the farther in you get.
My favorite thing so far about this series (im on Ghost Story) is the changes. The consequences from one book always carry over and thing from multiple books ago come back. Characters are all taken seriously and Butcher isnt scared to completely change everything and never go back.
Also, I had a feeling you would love Michael. He is, hands down, one of the best "paladin" characters I've ever read in fiction, and the way that Butcher handles faith continues to be this respectful and nuanced throughout the series. He's one of the few fantasy authors who is able to write people and entities that are supposed to be unambiguous "good guys" who are both ACTUALLY good, are very strong and powerful, and yet are also still nuanced, complex, and interesting. And the existance of these "good" characters doesn't diminish Harry's agency nor his "goodness" as a person, even when he disagrees with them. If anything, the fact that someone who is as good as Michael is willing to hang out with Harry, to work with him, trust him, and even call him his friend actually soeaks volumes about Harry's character. And even though Harry himself questions how good of a person he is constantly, his actions and choices in general don't invalidate that validation from Michael and eventually others that, yes, Harry is actually one of the good ones. At least in the first half of the series. After all, there are a number of CHANGES that occur throughout the series, and I don't want to spoil anything.
Whilst being raised a Christian, my faith has diminished a lot, but the one thing that still irks me is how often Christianity is demonised by having extremist bad guys in media. Jim Butcher is the only author I’ve read, thus far, who show some respect.
@@wolfme4030 I loved the conversation with Uriel ... How could God be interested in everyone?(I paraphrase badly) and the answer came back "How could he not?" ... Chills, absolute chills. God's spook.
@@scloftin8861my pastor is going through a couple of series that reflects this exact topic. God wants connection to His people, period. That’s why He sent His Son, why Jesus became man, why Jesus died and resurrected, was for connection.
I was first introduced to Desden last year. I was immediately obsessed. I read every book in just a few months. At one point I read three books in a single weekend. It’s so good.
This is one of the best urban fantasy series I have ever read and so far Daniel Greene is the only booktuber who has covered this series (that I know of) until today! I'm so excited to know what you think, Merphy! It's in my top favorite series and I cannot wait to watch as you plunge deeper into the series.
It is great to see your building excitement over the first three books. All I can say, is 'hold on'! It just continues to improve and the call/flash backs to events and characters from the earlier books is just incredible. Very remarkable world building at work.
I agree on you with the comments about his world building and ability to introduce information without overloading the readers. Butcher had a somewhat antagonistic relationship with his writing teacher in Collage. as an example she warned him to not make the character used to "Explain" how things work a talking head. so he created Bob.
I don't get why people would trash em. They're perfectly enjoyable as they are, and that's what I tell people. Plus that it just goes up from there. For a novice writer, they would have been good. For a first timer, I'd call em at least a triple, if not a Homer.
Regarding immaturity and the first few books, it's probably worth remembering Butcher *was* young when he started writing these. I believe book 1 was a college project.
He wrote chapter 1, showed it to his college teacher, she said "yeah, this is great. you could get this published." and then he went home and wrote the rest of it, 2, and 3, as well as outlined the ENTIRE series.. IIRC.
Love your reaction to book 3. To me it also felt that that's truly when the whole world opens up quite a bit, and we finally delve into the greater arcs and the vast world explored in the series. Welcome to the Nevernever and the sidhe. [Edit: PS - Some of the interactions between Michael and Harry are among my favorite moments in the series. Some really good real talk happens between them.]
I SQUEALED out loud when I saw this video. This is my favorite series and I am SO EXCITED that you are reading it!!! Glad you’re enjoying it so far, and it only goes up from there! You’ve made my entire week, I have no one to talk about this with!!!
You better buckle in, cause you're in for one hell of a ride. If you thought book three was good, I can't wait to hear you go on about Battle Grounds.... most impressive series (as a whole) that I've ever read. Each novel 'one ups' the last, from plot to character development to the stakes. Enjoy the hell out of these novels!
While I love Michael and his family, and Thomas the drool factory ... Nothing beats a zombie T-Rex in my book Yeah, I love all of the books but Dead Beat's gotta be my fav.
The Dresden Files is most definitely worth listening to on audible, the narrator James Marsters does a phenomenal job. I got “Cold Days” on audible because I had a long drive ahead of me and omg I was blown away. After finishing I ordered all the Dresden books on audible and listened to the whole series. Marsters IS Harry Dresden and his narration gives amazing life to the series.
No the series is not yet finished. The next book in the series is currently at 20% according to his website (or it was last time i checked). From various interviews he plans for another 6-8 books in the dresden files.
Ah yes, the series he wrote as a result of him making a bet with someone that he could make a decent story outline out of any prompt and the prompt he was given was 'Pokémon x the Lost Thirteenth Legion.' And so he made the outline... And then he said 'Oh, I like this, I'm going to actually write this'. And it was good.
Twenty years later, I still go back to re-read Bianca's party in Grave Peril to see connections that we had no way of knowing existed until the later books were published. There is so much set up in that one scene, and Butcher has hinted that we've barely scratched the surface.
I've loved these books for years. Glad to see the creation of one more fan! I've always enjoyed the relationship with Dresden and Michael, I will hint that their relationship will only get better.
The Dresden Files feels like a love letter or guilty pleasure reward for people who love fantasy. I have laughed out loud so many times in this series and been thrilled to do so.
omg yes! i read the series for the first time earlier this year and it blew me away. so glad you're enjoying it! also, other people have mentioned it but it can't be stressed enough: James Marsters did a PHENOMENAL job with the narration. i put this on the same "the audiobook is the definitive experience" level as Cradle and Gentlemen Bastards
Be prepared. Book 12, Changes, will alter your world and confirm that Butcher has the capability to be a truly great writer. It is perfect. Jim at his peak.
@fenris5932 Skin Game is my favorite. But Changes was a show stopper. Dead Beat was my favorite before Skin Game. And I would call that the signature Dresden Files book from the "case files" era.
@shawngillogly6873 if you consider Small Favor as part of the "case files" Era and not the "Warden" Era, then it's my favorite. Otherwise, it's Death Masks. Any book that has old Nicky in it is my favorite
While I agree, I would humbly caution the fans (and this is not directed at anyone specifically) to not overhype Changes. I have seen it where several YT reviewers were inundated with "OMG wait till you get to book 12!!!!" and it either spoiled the experience or gave the reviewer such high expectations that were impossible to live up to, regardless of the amazing quality of the book.
I LOVE the Dresden Files. It’s my absolute favorite series, and I love Butcher’s writing. I have never heard anyone say to skip over the first 3 books, that’s an atrocious thing to say imo! The books absolutely get better as time goes on and Butcher fully explores his world and character development, but you can’t appreciate the character development if you don’t know where they start. IMO the thing that makes Butcher make such good characters is that he writes their flaws so believably. No one is perfect, especially not Dresden, but those traits make him more real if that makes sense? I’m frustrated by some of the same things you’ve mentioned, but I don’t think I’d understand Harry as much as I do if he didn’t have those flaws. Excited for you to join the fandom and keep exploring the world! Maybe I should start my third read through? Or listen to them as I head the audiobooks are top notch.
Just finished battlegrounds for my 3rd reread and i can tell you the audiobook are definitively worth it! The only issue is that they are "short" depending on your listening time (10-20hrs depending on the title). So for me i had to alternate audiobook and reading them to be able to use my audible free book. Anyway i completely agree with you, i had never heard before that the first 3 books were weak. For me, i think it is the books around 5 or 6 that are a dip in quality, to then reach out for the stars. Although on reread, i really had an issue with the pacing in the last 2 peace talk and battleground, even taking them together as one book.
I agree that characters should have flaws, my problem with Dresden is that he basically has this hero complex where he wants to save everyone even though he _knows_ he can't reasonably succeed, and yet instead of figuring out a plan to even out the playing field, he just goes in against the big bad of the book armed only of recklessness and almost suicidal pride. And yet somehow wins through luck and, well, plot armour, each time. And he knows that he just got lucky, he says so incessantly, yet the next book he does the exact same thing AGAIN.
@@36424567254 you're describing character traits and calling them faults. No, Harry is written to be that way. He has a hero complex and he knows that he can't save everyone. That doesn't mean he's going to stop trying. His stubborn streak is stronger than his common sense. Taking that away from Harry would be like taking away Gollum's obsession with the ring. At that point you've stripped him of his basic characteristics. You can see it in each book. He tries, he prepares, he works hard, he builds and fortifies. But the big bad of the next book will inevitably be something stronger, faster or smarter than Harry. And Harry will still jump in head-first. Because that's the kind of guy Harry Dresden is. I don't know if you've read everything, but in a recent book Harry, who is relatively safe in a fortified castle and surrounded by Gods and Fae, jumps down multiple stories with almost no backup to face a dozen monsters, just because he heard a child's scream. As for plot armor, Harry has less plot armor than most protags. It just so happens that Harry is special in that universe. We've been told from the start that Harry has raw magical power comparable to the strongest wizards on the planet. He's been developing since and at this point he probably has more personal power than anyone but the Senior Council and Ancient Gods, Faes and Beings.
You hit on the strengths and weaknesses of the early books incredibly well. Definitely the world building is some of the best in contemporary writing, especially as the series progresses. I also agree that many writers tend to put out a series of stories that are kind of detached but Butcher puts on a master class in weaving the books together. Butcher handles the Fae as the dangerous beings they were originally believed to be. My roommate and I both agree that it was a huge loss that a streaming service or movie studio didn't set up a high quality series or movie franchise with a younger Lee Pace as Harry Dresden. Pace fits the description, is a great actor and importantly, has the height and build to be Harry. Sigh... could have been amazing. As the series continues, it just gets better and better.
Harry is one of my favorite protagonists ever, aside from the fact that hes a wizard hes super relatable from a mans perspective. He is constatntly having thoughts and feelings that l can relate to
Harry's boob fixation did eventually become distracting, I felt. I'm not particularly prudish, but man... A woman we haven't met before strolls into the scene. We don't know her name, who she is, why she's there, or anything at all, but we will most definitely know her cup size soon. There's a book coming up where Harry is undercover at a set for a pornographic movie -- Butcher must have pulled a few hand muscles trying to type descriptions of all that décolletage. But the world is a lot of fun. And Harry does eventually calm down a bit on the boobs.
Good timing Merph, I just started a re-read of these last week and im halfway through book 3 now lol. I had forgotten how unreal the early books are, because it is true that some others are such standouts you cant see past them when you look backwards!! Also, Butchers Merph, is an absolutely cracking character so enjoy that :-)
I absolutely LOVE the series, I am glad you are enjoying it. It is honestly the best audiobook series that I have listened to as well, James Marsters is amazing as the "reader". I really agree about the downplay of the early books. I think part of it is that people didn't start reading it much when it was early in the series and they are comparing them to the later books, which of course, are better based on Butcher getting more and more experience and growth in the characters.
Fantastic series, for me it's tied with Wheel of Time. Every book adds another layer or two, enriching and deepening your understanding and depth of this fantastic world. Butcher is a genius, and it gets better and better. Overall, this series has the best group of smaller side characters of any series I've ever read- Mouse, Toot-Toot, Mister, and Bob, who is the single best supporting character of all time, any genre, full stop! Enjoy your first time through... I recommend going back later and reading through again-you will enjoy it even more the 2nd time around!
People tell you, you need to get past the third book until it really gets going, because it's true... It's not that the first three books are trash. They are really, really good, but it get's so much better on top of that after. :D From that point on connections snap into place and side characters are build up. It's absolutely awesome!
I'm really glad you're enjoying them! I'm not quite so harsh as to say that you should skip the first three, but I usually say that the first two tread a lot of the same ground as each other and you can usually safely skip one of them. Similarly, while it never totally goes away, the fanservice is the worst in the first few books IMO, which again is one of those things where it might deter you from an otherwise pretty great series, so that contributes to that "just get through it" mentality that a lot of people share. You're in for a heck of a ride. One of the things that Butcher does best IMO is *consequences* for choices. I will keep it spoiler free here, but you may have noticed that often Dresden will be faced with what he is "supposed to do" vs what is "right to do" and he always picks what is right. However, what makes the *series* so good is that the whole reason he is supposed to do some things is that there are big consequences for not doing so, and boy do those consequences show up hard. There are books down the line with HUGE events that can be traced back all the way to the actions taken in these first three books. One of my biggest annoyances in fantasy/super hero stuff is when the hero gets to have their cake and eat it too. When they get to be morally righteous, bucking all of the reasons why something is a bad idea even if it is right, and then they just succeed through the power of being nice or right. The right choice is often supposed to be the harder choice, but a lack of consequence means that it really isn't the harder choice at all. Dresden does not, under any circumstance, get to have his cake and eat it too, and I love the series for that.
I'll say, as someone that's been reading The Dresden Files since 2006, I highly enjoy the first three. they ARE rough compared to the future novels (you'll see what I mean if you continue the books) but they are also quite good setup. I still remember the night I discovered The Dresden Files. My wife and I have a deep interest in the occult and were legit reading books of magic and ordering ingredients for spell work when a commercial for the short lived TV series popped up. "Detective.. Wizard.. The Dresden Files" the thing that made our eyes bulge is that my nickname since 2004 has been "Dresden" to the point that I've changed my first name legally to Dresden. So as someone interested in the supernatural and also as someone named Dresden (first name, not last, but still) how could I NOT love this series? You're in for a ride if you continue. Don't forget there's tons of short stories and even graphic novels. All worth a read. So good.
These only get better! Skin Game is my fav so far. This series makes me laugh and cry more than any other series. The characters are amazing and you fall in love ( or love to hate) all of them over time. The writing quality gets so much better after the first handful of books too. My absolute fav series of all time. You have no idea what you’re in for! I wish I could read them for the first time again.
It's a favorite series of mine. I will agree the first few books are rough. Summer Knight is when I really started to fall in love with it, and it only gets better from there. By around Dead Beat I was ride for life. I am still not caught up, but I finally read Changes, so I have 5 books to go.
I think that people say to just bear with first 3 books is that the first books are like police procedurals. There's a simple mystery that needs solving and we tackle that. Monster of the week as the X Files called it. But then after Bianca's party the books move into epic fantasy with overarching big story, big lore and big players with hidden plots and big wars. Its a big shift in tone. You could take the first 3 as vignettes and the next books are all big series tomes.
funny enough, I liked the small scope of the first books and really disliked the epic fantasy shift of later books (even more so since henry is obviously and self-admittedly not prepared for that, and he just wins through sheer luck and plot armour each time), so much so that I dropped the series around I think 6th or 7th book.
I think it shows character growth well and the stakes keep getting upped every book along with capabilities of Dresden. A lot of epic fantasy books tell you straight away something epic is happening and you know the scope and the characters going through it are just part of it. But Dresden books are first person, we only know as much as Harry knows, understands or sees. We see the world through him and it's not a subjective view of everything.
I started the series about a month ago too and I'm already on book 11. Pretty much nonstop binging the audiobooks. There are surprisingly few reviews for a series that I at least thought was as mainstream as it gets. I can't wait for more Dresden videos and to hear your takes with full spoilers.
Woooooo so glad you’ve joined the fan club!! The fact that you liked the first three this much bodes extraordinarily well for you becoming a mega super fan by the end. Besides a little blip in bk 6 with Blood Rites I felt it just got steadily and steadily more engaging and impactful as it went.
Harry's personal journey of character development is one of the things I love about this series. A lot of the time, long book series have characters that say very similar in behaviour to how they started, but I've found that as Harry grows older through the books (from early/mid twenties and over a period of 10+ years - 14 years after Storm Front as of the most recent title according to Jim Butcher's website), he also grows and changes and matures as a person.
Glad you're enjoying them! Jim Butcher's pacing in the "worst-weekend" style of chronology is tremendous - like a good rollercoaster, unrelenting and almost break-neck, but with just enough breathing time that you remember the ride and want to go on it again and again. The criticism of fan service is somewhat valid but it's an uncharitable way to read those scenes I think. For sure Jim Butcher is a horn-dog, and being a 1st person book there's a certain amount of fairly benign male-gaze, but Butcher does a great job at making sure all of those scenes have very valid in-world explanations: -Juxtaposing the boob description with the ribcage makes the whole scene more visceral and it's more obvious from the angle Harrys at -Bob the skull is a pure horn-dog so he made a lusty love potion (hence the cheap ingredients to make it - pretty good comedy imo) -Tara is a naked animal in her natural form and can't understand human foolishness, makes cops being distracted by it way more plausible with how natural she is -All the rapey vampire scenes are heavily turned around on Harry in Grave Peril, flipping the traditional male vampire predator vibes
It's a wonderful series. Butcher's takes on Magic, Faith, Belief, and Mythology in the Dresden-verse are refreshingly original twists that do well to pay homage to the sources. Not just any vampire, a Cheesey Vampire. The ride continues, keep on keeping on. In hindsight, most people come to the conclusion that while they're still good books, the first 3 entries are the weakest in the series. While there's another relatively low point or two further out, even the short stories and side stories are bangers. You'll probably find maybe 2 more 3 outta 5s throughout the rest of the series. Enjoy!
I was first introduced to the series through the Sci Fi TV Series. Quite a bit was changed between the books and the series, but it was good enough to get me to start reading the books. I am pretty much a straight up Fantasy reader and read very little of the Mystery or Horror genre (other than what is included in Fantasy series). However, the world building in the series was so good, I couldn't put the books down.
I was hooked on book 1. I can't specify exactly what it was, but Butcher's ability to seamlessly intertwine the fantasy worlds with reality? I barely had to suspend disbelief. Huge fan of Mr Butcher, especially the Dresden Files. I've read each book of the series at least twice. Definitely appreciate your unabashed excitement. Mirrors my own ; ) Found your page because of Dresden, but I'm looking forward to seeing more of what you produce.
If you continue with the series you may want to consider picking up the 2 books of short stories. They occur between the events of the books and flesh out the timeline.
What I like about Stormfront is that it never lets you rest... If Harry has 2 days to accomplish something he will suddenly need 1 day. Everything is right now, everything is immediate. There is a sense of urgency in this book. I love that.
Butcher's writing really improves throughout the series, it's good in the beginning, but it becomes truly amazing later on. There are moments that are so funny, so dramatic, so mind blowing.
Welcome to the club! Now you'll understand what people meant about getting through the first 3 books. You are in for a treat! And book 4 is one of my favorites. Enjoy!
Each time a new book gets released I relisten to the entire series. This is one of the few series that I have become heavily invested in. Would love to see a reboot of the TV series. I love the characters/world Jim has created, and the oration of James Marsters for the audio books is top notch. It's hard for me to find similar combinations of author and narration that capture my attention as this series. 17 books in and a projected 6 or 7 more to complete the series.
So happy you’re reading the series that I’m not waiting to hear about your experience before I hit “like” and feed the algorithm by leaving this comment! The series just keeps getting better as you go, I hope you can enjoy the beginning!
I can't wait to see how exited you will be when reading FABLES ... in volume two (where the series starts to hit it's stride) there's a haunting that I will say nothing about ... but I'm sure it will cause squealing in glee!
Fables is one of the best fantasy stories ever. And the art is just so good! I dropped off shortly after the war and it’s still one of my favorite series.
I'm so glad I kept with reading the series. I had to ask on Reddit a few times for suggestions on how to get past the first couple books, because for me Fool Moon was a little challenge to get through. But I'm honestly glad I did. I was listening to the audiobooks and had recently finished Blood Rites. It's much better than I had previously guessed! Taking a slightly break now from the series (I read multiple books at once) but soon will get back into them. So glad I kept up with it, they're pretty good!
And that reaction after reading book 3 is why almost everyone says you need to just get through the first 3 books. It’s not that they are bad it’s just that they are the weakest but it builds the foundations of the world!
Note that the first Dresden book was Jim Butcher's first novel. It shows. The series gets much better as it goes. Wonderful plotting and world building here
This series is one of my all-time favorites. The world is our world, but overtime it becomes so deep and you get to know so many characters over a couple of decades. It has hiccups, but it's fantastic.
Happy that you're reading these because watching your reviews has reminded me why I loved the beginning of this series, maybe the first 4 - 6 books. Hopefully you keep loving them longer than I did, but thanks either way for reminding me of the good ole days.
I'm sure I read somewhere that Butcher describes Dresden as Diry Harry Potter. As in Dirty Harry meets Harry Potter. I think that is a pretty solid take on the character.
This is my favorite series, hands down. The character arcs, over the whole collection, are layered and deep, and the sense of humor is excellent! I experienced them through audio book, with the inimitable James Marsters becoming Harry and all the other characters, with so much brilliance. You've only experienced Jim Butcher's "on ramp" to fully developing the world - it gets so much better than those first 3!
Actually, the naked dance scene in Book #2 was an early indicator that the character was not human, it was "necessary" if you were trying to figure out who/what she was. Animals aren't big on clothes
Dresden files has been a favorite of mine for a loooong time, and they ramp up so hard from where you're at omg I can't wait to see you read more. There are definitely criticisms of it, but overall it's such a good series. It has both delighted and emotionally devistated me, and I just started rereading the series earlier this year
"He takes a lot of fantasy tropes that we know and does it in his own...Dresdendy way" Wait until you learn about the Three Billy Goats Gruff. Jelly donuts indeed.
Butcher's world building isn't as impressive if you're familiar with White Wolf's World of Darkness books from the 90s, which I think were the inspiration.
Day 5 asking Merphy to read Slam Dunk. It’s by Inoue Takehiko (Vagabond). On the surface it’s about basketball but it’s really about personal growth. It’s full of amazing characters like in Vagbond and it’s got lots of great humour
I'm looking forward to seeing your reactions to all the Dresden books. You need to have a separate series with spoilers so we can hear what you have to say about the details and characters. Have fun and we will enjoy your enthusiasm.
So glad you’re doing these. Dresden is my favorite series to reread and I do it an unhealthy amount. The Worldbuilding is by far the best part for me and it just increases and expands every single book in such fascinating and dark/sad ways. I’m sure others have told you relentlessly but the “horniness” of Dresden doesn’t ever exactly go away 😂 but it does change, and while it’s among mine and a lot of people’s criticisms i still think it’s interesting to see how over time Jim’s writing matures along with Dresden himself. Hope you do more of these. If you like the first books you’re gonna love the rest of them.
I love The Dresden Files. I wish they would continue or remake the original TV Show. Its such a fun, unique story with a lot of drama and works so well for TV/Film.
I think they should start from scratch and freaking stick to the damn books! Why the TV and film industry thinks they are better at storytelling than the original creator of the material they dropped loads of cash to license is criminal hubris.
Those scenes are exactly why the first couple of books are skippable. I pushed through and really fell in love with book 4. The world gets SO huge, the way we learn more about different creatures as the books go on. I love them. Plus all the feels, laughing and crying.
I'll be honest, those scenes and Harry's tendency to be a bit sexist were what stopped me near the end of Book 2. In the middle of a fight he calls a woman a bitch, and I just hung it up there. If it genuinely gets better, then I'll pick up where I left off and move forward
Let’s go! This was so unexpected! I’m really glad you’re loving the series so far. I only got into Dresden a couple years ago, and I’ll admit it took a few books for me to be truly hooked. However, with each book (except Fool Moon) the series got better and better, and after book 7, it became one of my favorites of all time! Can’t wait to see you continue. Also, Michael is the GOAT.
The older I get, the harder it is to get through the fan service parts of this series, but it is still a favorite of mine. Murphy and Michael are absolutely amazing and I love them with my whole heart.
I’ve tried to get through some of the books. I know it is supposed to get better. But it’s pretty head scratching some of the decisions that the Author makes in the series as it pertains to fan service. Why is this character dancing naked in the street? That’s not because of Harrys POV. Seems more because of the authors fantasy.
Thank you ! Your review made me Pick up the book and start Reading - and cant put it down, thank you thank you for the push to get started in Dresden ! ❤
If you can deal with Harry being the horniest person to ever exist and Butcher repeating some information every book then this series slaps relentlessly
Welcome to the party Merphy. Opening of book three with Michael completely hooked me also. Never turned back. Enjoy the ride. The world building and characters get sooo good. Great complete story.
I've read 5 books in the series and I actually liked first three books, people just love to jump on the bandwagon, they made me believe that those 3 books are the worst books to ever exist before I started the series.
I'm on book 10 and I really like the first 3 books too, However I can see why people say they're the worst. The books just get better as get further in. Better writing, awesome characters, character development, overarching plot, and just some really cool moments
Love to see you so excited about the series so far. In your enthusiasm for Gravil Peril, you said something to the effect the the series had reached such a high. You ain't read nothing yet. You're still in the foothills. The climb, to the peak, of this series hasn't been reached yet. You have so many more highs to read. I hope you enjoy the continuing journey, as much as most fans.
Little fun fact: If you count the letters of both words in the title of every Dresden book (with the exception of "Changes"), you'll find that both words contain the exact same number of letters.
The genre that Jim Butcher pulls from to move these books along is old pulp noir. In the spirit of the Sam Spade type stories. He published a "writer's toolbox", where he explained that it was about the pacing of the story. In those old books the detective/ protagonist may slip out the window of the office building successfully, so the security guard never sees him, but he escapes into the alley and the waiting arms of the mob who gladly beat him and tell him to stay out of their way. He stated that no scene should be a complete success or a complete failure so as to make the story keep moving. The lust potion as you rightly described it is in Harry's world much easier to make than an actual love potion, and "mind magic" is not only frowned on, but hunted down, so that is very consistent with the lore of the world. Yes Harry is a "breast guy" as you have aptly pointed out, but Sam Spade would fall out of his chair for "the gams on that doll"... I have read every book in the series to date, and do not anticipate missing any. Have fun, and do not anticipate any story threads being forgotten, Jim has a method for remembering them that keeps them till he needs them again. Have fun.
Storm Front has one of my favorite scenes in the entire series (non-spoiler: it's the one when Harry & Susan were trapped in his circle). I'm a little disappointed you didn't like it, I thought it was a great combination of hilarious & dangerous. I find this book the weakest of the series, but it was still very good & very entertaining. LOVE this series!! EDIT: "Book 1 ends with Harry's choices having consequences; I hope the rest of the books do this" Jim Butcher: HOLD MY MCANALLY'S BEER!!!!!
It was a start, Jim Butcher mentions that the first time he wrote it was totally unreadable. The published version was draft 8. Even there it wasn't quite to the Ride my animated T-Rex skeleton into battle while beating a big drum levels of awesome yet. But you could see the signs.

"Yes, because that's Michael"

It is very difficult not to love Michael. He is just a good man, and it has nothing to do with the sword he wields. Curious how Merphy will react when she learns more about the swords.

It really does go places. In fact, PT/BG sends the series straight into the toilet.

James Marsters narrates the audiobooks. His voice is terrific as Dresden. I borrow the audiobooks from my library app. Marsters is the actor playing Spike in Buffy the Vampire Slayer
I’m listening to the first one and did NOT realize this!
His performances as Bob and Toot-Toot are particularly brilliant imho!!!
@@penguinpryncessProduction quality improves in the audiobooks. In the earlier ones you can hear a lot of his ‘mouth’ sounds. It becomes more professional later (not his fault, it’s just how they recorded).
he is amazing.
Not to mention the daughter that gets a side mention in Grave Peril becomes so much more.
Not just Michael...his whole family.
Merphy said she would only be reading one book per month.
Mark my words folks, the next vlog there will at least be two more Dresden books. She's going to blast through the whole series. Once you're hooked, it's impossible to let it go.
i could not imagine simply reading one (1) dresden files book
She’s got a lot to read. But yeah from about 6 on I can’t see how someone wouldn’t want to immediately jump into the next book. I’m Very interested to hear her take on Summer Knight.
I give it 2 months top before she's caught up
Edit: guess I'll share my own story here: I read Changes (book 12) in literally one day
I started reading the series when he was around book 5 and I've read the series from book 1 every time he came out with a new one.
This series is freaking addictive! And the later you get, the more you want to keep going.
It's always a bittersweet joy to see someone "discover" Dresden. Joyful to watch the excitement of finding a series that is well done, sad that I wish I could experience that first time again.
This. Exactly. But we get to enjoy it vicariously through finding a friend to share them with, if we are lucky. ;-).
Dresden's choices for the entire series can be melted down to "Yes, this is a bad choice BUT...."
Like Gomez of the Addams family, "Just because it's a bad idea doesn't mean we won't have a good time!"
Michael stopping Harry from being an idiot is a good way to describe like half of the books
Yes, it's a really bad idea to declare a one man war against every supernatural heavy hitter that looks at him wrong, but they made a little girl cry.
It’s the right thing to do
I think your reactions to the first 3 books really sum up why a lot of people say you need to work through the first few books.
I agree.’I enjoy the books. I love full moon too, I know in popualr opinion.
Ah miss the time when Drenden was so chill in life with Bob and Murphy. My boy has suffered a lot since then.
ohh yes, man that one book (to keep it spoiler free) that one damned book, it takes 4 four-word setences to break a man.
LOVE Dresden Files SO MUCH. The later books really get DEEP and all the lore gets incorporated. They're so great.
@@jadziaspeed50 I have to agree. It was a very effective way to contrast between the life and death embodied in the scene.

Characters are all taken seriously and Butcher isnt scared to completely change everything and never go back.
heh... changes... *stares empty into the distance*
@@OddNumber1524 *smile turns blank as their eyes fade to nothing*
Ghost Story broke me. 'nuff said.
After all, there are a number of CHANGES that occur throughout the series, and I don't want to spoil anything.
sonya is the epitome of this
Whilst being raised a Christian, my faith has diminished a lot, but the one thing that still irks me is how often Christianity is demonised by having extremist bad guys in media. Jim Butcher is the only author I’ve read, thus far, who show some respect.

It is great to see your building excitement over the first three books. All I can say, is 'hold on'! It just continues to improve and the call/flash backs to events and characters from the earlier books is just incredible. Very remarkable world building at work.
I hate that the first few books get trashed so much. I'm glad you finally was able to give them a chance
IIRC.
That excuse doesn't really help when the immaturity and fanservice not only continues into the later books, but in some cases gets much, much worse.

Be prepared. Book 12, Changes, will alter your world and confirm that Butcher has the capability to be a truly great writer. It is perfect. Jim at his peak.
My favorite is probably still Skin Game but it's hard to argue against someone who says Changes is his best work
@fenris5932 Skin Game is my favorite.
Changes was amazing.

The next book, Summer Knight, is when I went from *liking* the Dresden Files to *loving* the Dresden Files.
Summer Knight is freaking good
Summer Knight is my favorite book in the series. Too bad PT/BG is straight garbage.
Same! Summer Knight is so f##@@ good
Meh summer knight is my least favorite in the series.
Personally turncoat is one of my favorites
This. (I'm happy that Merphy liked the godmother, that bodes good for the next...)
It makes me so happy to hear someone experience these books for the first time. I’m gonna go re-listen to the entire series 😁
Good timing Merph, I just started a re-read of these last week and im halfway through book 3 now lol. I had forgotten how unreal the early books are, because it is true that some others are such standouts you cant see past them when you look backwards!! Also, Butchers Merph, is an absolutely cracking character so enjoy that :-)
I'm in a reading slump and was thinking about starting a re read yesterday. Now I see your comment....it's a sign 😊
@@surpriseitsus9622 hell yes! Nothing like Dresden to et you out of a slump tbh, you can't put em down lol
If somebody hurts Mouse, i will kill them then myself.... 😂😂😂
The reread should be read by James Marsters 😂
People tell you, you need to get past the third book until it really gets going, because it's true... It's not that the first three books are trash. They are really, really good, but it get's so much better on top of that after. :D
From that point on connections snap into place and side characters are build up.
So good.
I'm so very excited for what you get to read coming up. Even just the next book is going to blow your socks off, much less something like Changes.
So far the books keep getting even better! Enjoy the experience.
I've had the third one unread on my shelf for over a year because I wasn't really feeling the first two, but it sounds like I need to keep going!
I figure about a year for each book. That fits Molly's aging as well.
For sure Jim Butcher is a horn-dog, and being a 1st person book there's a certain amount of fairly benign male-gaze, but Butcher does a great job at making sure all of those scenes have very valid in-world explanations:
-Juxtaposing the boob description with the ribcage makes the whole scene more visceral and it's more obvious from the angle Harrys at
-Bob the skull is a pure horn-dog so he made a lusty love potion (hence the cheap ingredients to make it - pretty good comedy imo)
-Tara is a naked animal in her natural form and can't understand human foolishness, makes cops being distracted by it way more plausible with how natural she is
-All the rapey vampire scenes are heavily turned around on Harry in Grave Peril, flipping the traditional male vampire predator vibes
Enjoy!
Having tried my hand at other urban fantasy series, I can say with confidence that Fool Moon (Dresden's weakest book) would easily be Top 1 on them.
You’re in for a heck of a ride! I’ve read every book multiple times. Well, not the most recent 2, but are-read is on the horizon for me.
Mirrors my own ; )
Found your page because of Dresden, but I'm looking forward to seeing more of what you produce.
My favorite description from Jim is that the books aren't Harry's normal day to day life, they're usually the worst week of the year for Harry
Enjoy!
Yer a wizard harry! - Merph probably
Thanks!
If there is any chance of a spoiler talk I would LOVE to watch it! How did you feel about the supporting cast? I love the "Bad Guys" in this series!
Dresden files has been a favorite of mine for a loooong time, and they ramp up so hard from where you're at omg I can't wait to see you read more. There are definitely criticisms of it, but overall it's such a good series. It has both delighted and emotionally devistated me, and I just started rereading the series earlier this year
"He takes a lot of fantasy tropes that we know and does it in his own...Dresdendy way"
Wait until you learn about the Three Billy Goats Gruff. Jelly donuts indeed.
And Santa Claus 🤣🤣
@@JerodimusPrime - That man is an ice cold killa
Prithee, with sprinkles 💀
Please do audiobooks also. James Marsters is so damn good. He brings such emotion to all the characters but especially Harry.
Ya, but they need to recast it. Harry is 6'6" or so, and Murphy is a petite blonde.
I think they should start from scratch and freaking stick to the damn books! Why the TV and film industry thinks they are better at storytelling than the original creator of the material they dropped loads of cash to license is criminal hubris.
My absolute favourite series. Glad to see you're enjoying it only gets better.
Same.
Yeah Michael especially is an amazing. He's a fictional character who has genuinely changed my opinion about things in my real life.
If you can deal with Harry being the horniest person to ever exist and Butcher repeating some information every book then this series slaps relentlessly
gotta do the repeats in case THIS book is the first one you read :)
He's hornier than Anita Blake...?
