Thanks for the 2 octave fingering - I'm up to date on 1/4 notes at 120bpm...1/8th notes at about 100bpm yet struggling with 1/16s! I'm not getting a clean sound at point of left hand position change.... Thank you for bringing this to my attention...Glad the shed is always unlocked 😊
OMG, I've looped those 2 Pomplamoose/Dua Lipa basslines one hundred times in the car. The tone. The pocket! ❤. I'm so impressed at how Nick articulates his approach to the bass. Thanks for making this interview happen. -Jeff. BC Canada.
Nick has a great way of explaining what he does, and telling stories. Good on you for letting him speak and asking the right questions! That is sometimes the most difficult thing to do. Great job guys
Was not expecting to see Nick here, but so glad you got him. He has such a great sense of how to make a bass line interesting without becoming overbearing. I'm not surprised to hear how thoughtful he is about how he plays. 😎
Just a guitarist who wants to learn the bass after discovering this channel 😅 I’ve really enjoyed the Sean Harvey & Nick Campbell interviews thank you!
I learned guitar a bit before I learned bass, and my older brother was sooo into Tool at the time and he was showing me Jambi, those intro string lines, he played it for me and gave it a palm mute for the bass lines and I was in that from then on. That is so awesome to hear of that kind of experience when you're literally a budding musician. No wonder Nick is unbelievable and makes it look sooo effortless!
He's so good, he does not have to think about what he plays anymore. He does the singing with his bass thing. His speed is outrageous, those 16th notes are so clean.
The Zen-lik relaxed calm of this guy's fret hand on the Dua Lipa line is inspiring. It's like it's taking a nap while he's playing this super-funky line.
Incredibly inspirational and educational. Had heard of Nick before this, big fan now. Will be watching this like a million times to learn the way he syncopates and accents notes. He's a master at this.
Awesome video. Found the 2 octave diagonal movement scale using 16th notes an awesome idea and have implemented it into my practice already. Opened my eyes to the technique. So easy to understand. It was like I was ripe for that idea to be planted in me. Gonna make a difference to opening up the fretboard, I can tell. A real derrrr / eureka moment 😊
Had to break it down and do it in segments, but glad I got to watch this whole thing. I've been a fan of Nick's playing since the beginning of the Pomplamoose studio sessions. Glad to see mentioned here the Dua Lipa cover by Scary Pockets; I've lost track of the number of times I've gone back to listen to that monstrous rhythm section groove -- so loose, and yet so tight. At 57:50, Nick is describing the onstage bit where everyone is trying to distract him during the solo, and I was reminded of something from a Flecktones vid from several years back: Victor Wooten talks about (during rehearsal?) doing a band thing where everyone else throws musical curves at Bela to try to get him to make a mistake.
There's so much information in this video! What a great teacher Nick is! I realize I pluck too hard (learned bass by myself listening to RATM and RHCP... without amp ^^) which then requires the strings to be set with way too much action, which then complicates precision plucking (and makes tapping almost impossible). It also explains why I have so little endurance. But on the other hand, when I pluck just over the higher frets, it sound really like an upright bass! ^^ Keep those kind of videos coming, full of tips from professionals, I love it!
dude this was so informative. im gonna be coming back to bits and pieces of this for years i think. awesome hearing Sam Wilkes mentioned! Would love to see him featured on this channel some day!
I LOVE Nick Campbell. I'm so glad you guys featured the Dua Lipa piece too. That was the song where I was like who on earth is playing bass. It was KILLER! After I saw that I went out and followed him everywhere. And I love his 'Nick Campbell Destroys' identity. So fun! Love him - thanks for this interview!
Great interview - thanks - really good insight into his history and approach to playing bass. Fantastic player. I just need to work out that diagonal cycle of 5ths major scale exercise now!
Thanks so much for this long-form interview of sorts. It was both entertaining and informative. While I'm sure there are Bond villain bass players out there, based on the videos I've seen, you've highlighted not only good players, but good people. All the best.
He is…so natural and creative, but with a very strong fundamentals. Tnks for the interview. He is pure talent with a lot of hard work behind!! No shortcuts!!! 🔝🔝
Awesome awesome awesome love nick campbell, great to hear nicks thoughts and insights and great job to get him to play some things, maybe when you do artist breakdowns u guys can start looking at guys like nick rather than just looking back and rehashing some of the same artists and material that there's an abundance of....that being said never get enuf of any pino breakdowns lol, love the channel
Sometimes i think people like Nick just think 2 times faster then us mere mortals (or it could be just me being a little slow). What an absolute monster!
Awesome interview. Nice to hear such a cerebral, articulate, analytical musician whose playing is anything but sterile. Quite the opposite, in fact. Killer player with interesting things to say.
Definitely best to watch these with bass in hand. Great tip with the palm muting pressure, I didn't realise I was choking the sustain so much and was digging in too much to compensate. Playing as lightly as possible is the other tip I needed to hear for sure. I always tend to play too heavy meaning I'm not able to have the action as low as I want so I think focusing on that is going to be a huge leap for my playing.
Go check out “Pomplamoose” and his other project “Scary Pockets” I’ve been preaching those two groups for years. Jack Conte on keys is a common denominator in both ensembles. See ya next year when you’re finished listening to their catalogues:)
FR Those two in lots of the earlier pockets stuff was THE SOUND. Nicks solo on Just the Way You Are feat. Theo is INGRAINED in my mind. Gotta go practice now😂
The link that led me back to this said "future legend?!" ...but wtf??? Nick is a LIVING LEGEND!!! However... until Nick shares the secret pickup(s) on the bass, that will be a strike against him. So... Legend- ...kinda like A- so, c'mon Nick. Be a Legend+ 😁😘
Ian ............ :o) The response you have here is the same as I get every time I hear you play :o) ! Respect !!! Just proves there's always more to learn, more to explore .....no matter how good you are :o) !
Disappointed to see Flea's image used for the thumbnail, as he's not mentioned at all in the vid. Yes both Nick Campbell and Flea are from LA, but the connection feels misleading. Kinda unfortunate that a respected channel like this resorts to clickbait tactics
@@TS-cs8suWell...we want SBL to be continually successful, right? If they ignore solid thumbnail strategy, they leave views behind and fewer people will watch the video. We can cringe if we want, but it's smart to put the most well-known LA bassist's face on the thumbnail so that they can click through and be introduced to Nick, a little-known yet incredible talent. Aslo, I agree with @adam5781 's perspective.
13:30 - perhaps subconsciously he's mimicking a potential kick and snare pattern and overlaying this on the beats? I think it makes more sense (when you've got a Bass in your hands!) To think of it along these lines so you don't think too much when actually playing and trip over yourself🤔
W000t! So fun thank you guys for having me
