Thank you for the review. This is something I am considering purchasing. Your review has helped a lot.

A few comments on Grips. 1st, the HLD-8 is the Horizontal Grip, while the Portrait Grip is the HLD-6, which has an integrated 2nd battery holder.
As a professional photographer, we were always told to hold the lens, never the camera body, and that's the big mistake I often see with amateur photographers holding their equipment by the body. Always support the camera by your left hand cupping its lens. And, if you use a safety wrist strap, then the strap goes on your left wrist.
As for the HLD-8, well if you're correctly holding your equipment by cupping the lens, then you don't really need an improved grip on the camera body. However, if you are shooting in portrait orientation, then you'll benefit from fitting an HLD-6 under the HLD-8, as this moves the shutter-release to the side of the camera, as well as holding an extra battery.
One very good reason for fitting these extra grips to your camera is that many people have the ridiculous idea that professionals only use big cameras. They don't really understand digital photography, and having a "professional looking" big camera will prevent your clients from worrying because you turn up to shoot their wedding with a camera that's smaller than they expected. So I avoid getting into this situation by making my cameras look bigger.
As for the rule to only hold your camera by the lens. This places your fingers in the correct place for focusing and zooming the lens, while giving you a very stable hold of your equipment. It also frees your right hand for manipulating the tiny buttons and dials, without trying to support the camera at the corner. Think about it: the obvious point to support equipment is beneath the centre of mass, and not off to one side where you're also trying to manipulate tiny control buttons and dials, as well as pressing the shutter-release.

@@absurdfool even with a pancake lens, it's still best practice to hold the camera in your left (typically steadier) hand, while using your right hand to operate the controls with your right hand. That was always lesson 101 in professional photography training back in the 1970s.
Agreed, the "always support your camera and lens in your left hand" has more obvious benefits when you're using a large and heavy telephoto lens. But, consider, if you're trying to hand hold your camera in your right hand. Even something like pressing the shutter release will induce a small amount of movement, because movement of your trigger finger muscles will affect the rest of the structure of the gripping hand.
      Happy Christmas,
      Rick

I saw that the battery grip has the DC 9V port. So can you tell me something about that. I'm a videographer so the battery life are most importan thing.

If you still own it, could you give an update and how you like the grip in long run? Did it prove to be of value? Especially that, unlike most battery grips, 5 Mk II doesn't have any cheap 3rd party supply!

Thanks for posting this, just got this camera in black. Am deciding to pick up this pro lens and a 25 to go with my 45 portrait. You're the only video that covers both front and back and share comparison with Pen F! ]
    Awesome

Late to the party, but you might have mentionned the battery holder part of the grip (or portrait grip in Olympus parlance) is the HLD-6P, that is, it's the exact same battery holder as the one used on the original E-M5. The HLD-8G, the paysage grip suited for the E-M5.2, is sold also standalone, so if you had previously an original E-M5 with the HLD-6, you can save on the price by keeping the battery holder and moving it to your new camera. Your old E-M5.1 will still have the remaining HLD-6G piece, without a 2nd battery, which is mostly fine for a backup camera.
The price difference is about 50 €/$.

I primarily use either the Pen F, Olympus Em5mkii or my iphone. All depends on what the object is, and how i feel like filming.

What lens cap do you have on your 12-40?

hi there! its actually a funky design, I bought it from BH photostore, if you want to check it out yourself, go to the website and search exactly for this "OP/TECH USA 1101621 FAST CAP". it has this scope like design that flips out and stays there. what I did was unscrewed that pin holding them together and separated the cap to the base. then I dremeled down the areas that housed the hinge (to make it smooth and round) and i just use the cap itself. I like it b/c the base that you screw on is VERY thick (rubber) and kinda creates a tiny lens hood for protection of your glass. Thanks for watching! good luck!

Your review is mistaken in its claim that the earphone port is a microphone port and also misses the important fact that there is also a port for external DC power supply. Both are very important to shooting video, and probably more important than repetitive comments on "how nice" the grip looks. Also unique is unique. Nothing is very unique, or not very unique!
