Hi Gordon, thanks for another great review, I’ve also just bought your out of camera book, which is a great example of how you can get amazing prints from a variety of cameras. Can I ask if you’ve had many chances of using the EM5 3 on a tripod, as there are disturbing reports of the tripod screw failing (to be fair mostly from use with tripod mounted straps than “normal” tripod use)? I don’t use tripod mounted straps, but worry about mounting an EM5 3 with a heavy lens on a tripod for long exposure/astro photography
@@samandchar2004 thanks for buying my book! I've heard reports of threads failing on a bunch of cameras, so I wouldn't worry too much, just don't put anything too big or heavy on there - or basically, don't hang a lens off the mount if it has its own tripod collar / foot. Anything that doesn't have a foot should be fine, and if it doses have a foot, use this instead on the tripod / mount.
You asked if people liked this long-form approach to reviewing a camera. Personally, I love it. I appreciate the long-form because I want to know ALL the details about a camera like this. AND I love the troubleshooting approach you take - anticipating the questions a consumer might ask. I particularly like the sections where you compare/contrast the OM-D E-M5 III with the alternatives in roughly the same price range, even those at a slightly higher price such as the OM-D E-M1 II and the Panasonic G9. Watching the video really helped me organize my own thoughts about what I really want and need in a video camera and which model might suit me best.

In fact, it was your test of the Canon EOS 450D that made me fianally jump into the DSLR world coming from Pro EOS and Medium Format film cameras. I bought it to replace my little digital compact for general snapshots. That quickly changed everything for me. Fair review. You point out the strengths and weaknesses of the system. Many just discount the EM5 and say it's too expensive without actually discussing all the capabilities.
Another great review, Gordon. One thing I'd note, though, is that whilst the M43 lens lineup is extensive, we STILL don't have a small weathersealed prime to suit the Em5 series. Even if they just gave us the 17 or 25 with weathersealing, much as Fuji do with the F/2's. The Pro primes are great, but not exactly small.
Jason Hannigan There are some options. None like the Olympus jewel-like 1.8 lenses (yet, that I know of), but there are choices like the excellent Sigma 16mm f/1.4 (which, while a little larger due to being brighter, is not heavy at all and offers quite respectable quality).
@@jamespeirce2582 the sigmas are great, and yes the 16 and 56 are sealed. But if I'm carrying 1 4's I may as well go with the 1.2's . Panasonic have also just weathersealed the 25/1.4 but again it's not small. I'm just a little surprised that after 10 years of a system based on compact quality that Oly haven't bothered with w/s 1.8 primes considering the Em5 is marketed as small and rugged.
Jason Hannigan The 1.2 primes are noticeably larger and heavier, especially vs the Sigmas which are designed to be lower weight. On one hand, I agree, and I’d love to have those 1.8 primes weather sealed as well. But even still the Sigmas afford an extremely small and portable weather sealed package compared to realistic alternatives. And one imagines a 1.8 would serve in most cases? They can handle modest exposure. Olympus is making some weather sealed f/4 professional zooms right now, roughly in line with the “holy trinity” focal length, which are focused heavily and small size and allow another (future) option. Maybe after that they will release some II 1.8 prime versions with weather sealing (we can wish). Or maybe Panasonic keeps at it.
James Peirce The 12-45 f4 and the wide angle f4 on the way seem weird at first, but if they release a 12 f2, 17 1.8, 251.8, 45 1.8 and dare I say, the legendary 75 1.8 as wether sealed mkii lenses, that’s some serious options for a compact wether sealed travellers kit

I'm a huge fan of the EM1 Mkii and use it daily for my UA-cam channel: Kinotika. I haven't reviewed this camera yet and can't wait to get my hands on one! I'm not sure if it is worth a happy EM1 Mkii shooter to switch over to this...but man....this is a brilliant B-Camera to my EM1!

Absolutely marvelous comprehensive review! I've just purchased the EM5 mkiii, after agonizing over whether to buy the EM1 mkii. You have given me more confidence in my choice. I do primarily shoot birds, so ISO1600 is often necessary, but today's noise reduction software is so good that it often doesn't matter. I used to be a Nikon shooter, but I like the fact that in my Panny and now Olympus cameras I can adjust exposure compensation and see what the picture will eventually look like all through the viewfinder.
Very steady, very sharp, very compact ... the 17mm & 45mm premiums seem perfect for this body... except no weather sealing on the lenses. Love Oly IBIS!

A very interesting survey of this camera, (which I bought 2 days ago!). Having had Olympus film cameras (OM1n, OM2n and OM4Ti) for many years I swapped to Canon EOS film and digital early this century for the superior autofocus lenses then available. Now I have come back to Olympus as I can’t cope with the weight of the Canon gear any longer! The EM-5 Mklll reminds me very much of the OM4Ti, which was a very clever camera- whether I will make use of all the features of the EM-5 remains to be seen, but Olympus are once again ahead of the game, I think.
My EM10 Mark ii reminds me so much of the old Olympus film cameras. OM2, OM4Ti and even the OM10 but arguably even more attractive at least for 21st century. It was a metal camera too wgich for entr level wasn't really entry level!👍😇
As a long time Nikon dslr shooter, I am just beginning my journey into M4/3 sensors, and i must say your reviews serve the dual purpose of broadening my horizons and making every dang gone camera seem like the one. Top notch content upload.
As always the absolutely definitive review. Deep respect is due for the sheer comprehensivenes and incredibly well informed market comparisons. I switched from full frame Canon that I used professionally to the Olympus EM 1 for personal use due to your advice and didn't regret it. Now wish I sold the older gear. Need to buy you another coffee to say a very heartfelt thanks because I now take many more shots for fun.
Another great review. Thx! As you mentioned in your video there is nothing out on the market which beats the variety of available lenses of M4/3. Because of that there is no question which system I am going to keep. I don't tend to take pictures of fighting black cats in an unlit tunnel.
Olympus MFT has two advantages to help overcome some of the disadvantages comparing noise performance with larger sensors. The smaller sensor gives a deeper depth of which means in many cases you can use a larger aperture to allow more light in and lower ISO’s . The smaller sensor also allows an amazing IBIS system again allowing lower iso. So for many types of shooting MFT noise performance disadvantages aren’t as bad as you might think.
Great review! I think that the use of a plastic body is more in the heads of people than it is really an issue. Polycarbonate is a very durable material and is even used on outside parts of cars for years. Plastic sounds cheap and not durable, but I think people will be surprised in the long run. My Garmin motorcycle GPS has seen quite some abuse and still looks fine and also a metal body can scratch. About the articulating screen: one other advantage is that you can skip a protector, just flip it around with the screen on the inside and it is well protected.
I wholeheartedly concur! I own the em5 mkiii, having just upgraded from the em10 mkii, and it does feel less dense. When I'm sitting in my couch fondling the camera and thinking about the plasticky build, it does bother me a bit (especially if watching a negative review simultaneously). However, when I'm shooting the camera feels and works great, and I don't think about the plastic build at all. So, in my opinion, anyone who is considering this camera (maybe preferring the form factor over that of the em1 mk2) should not be scared off by the polycarbonate.

Thanks for a very thorough review Gordon. I got a fantastic deal on the EM 1 mk ii - same price as the EM5 mk iii. It really is worth looking around carefully. It also helps that I prefer the body shape of the EM 1 and find it better for use with my 40-150 f2.8.

I recently returned a Nikon Z50 for the Olympus Em5 mkiii and I couldn't be happier. The Z50 was excellent but I really like the IBIS, Pro capture, live composite, and high res shot of the Olympus. I originally had a Em10 mark I and the updated 20mp sensor in the Em5iii is a huge improvement especially in dynamic range and higher iso noise control. Solid camera!
I'm looking at the EM5 iii as an upgrade to the EM10 ii. Seems a lot better for autofocus which is pretty useless on the EM10 ii on video though pretty good for stills.
Great review Gordon! You really nailed it when you said due to "some questionable decisions made by its rivals" this is still a compelling camera even arriving late. It's what I like about this camera, the features and capability far outweighs the "negatives."
A polycarbonate body has better shock absorption than a cast metal body. It deforms slighty on impact, thereby reducing the G-forces that affect the internal mechanisms, much like what car bumpers do when you bump into another car when parking (a metal bumper will simply bend). If you look at the TG-series, they are all made with polycarbonate and they are tough! Also, the Nikon D750, D850 and the Canon EOS range are polycarbonate, and yet no one complains about it.
Thanks for making this review with the em5iii. I have the em5ii, i love it, but im having problems with the AF when doing interviews. I find it drifting off even when the interviewee was staying still. I think the em5iii will be perfect for me.
I can see you were using stabilisation mode 2 which is sensor shift only (and results in warpy corners). I've found that the stabilisation mode 1 (sensor and electronic) works best
I've always had a soft spot for Olympus cameras, starting with an OM-1 in the 70s and culminating with an E-M1 four years ago when I changed to FF for its inherently higher IQ. I still hanker after a current Olympus, if only for the style, size, ergonomics and access to some lovely glass - notably the 75mm f/1.8 which I reluctantly let go. Another highly competent review, thanks.
By “inherently higher IQ,” what do you mean? I’ve also gone from film to digital (for me it was a complete system switch from Pentax to Olympus 4/3, but I hadn’t heavily invested in extra lenses or other system-specific accessories), but then I stuck with Olympus. The inherent compactness and reliability of the 4/3 and m4/3 system design (smaller lenses, dust filter) and other Olympus hallmarks (Color reproduction, IBIS, and ergonomics except for my last camera, the E-PL5, eugh!) has kept me satisfied and sticking with the system (just got a G85... haven’t played with it for more than 2 days yet). However, I see others state that 35mm sensors have higher IQ, so I’m curious if there’s something I simply don’t know. From Gordon’s E-M5 mk III review above, it seems the Sony has better autofocus (but Sony and Olympus seem to be the best on the Mirrorless market, so that doesn’t seem FF inherent), there are Headphone and microphone jacks on higher end Sony, Panasonic, and Olympus camera’s (not IQ, but not FF dependent either), and high ISO noise (this IS inherent to FF, at equivalent efficiency, but sensor tech has improved to where an E-M5 mk III has better noise performance than an old FF Canon 5D, and it’s all moot to me anyway as I only bought ISO 1600 film once and modern results are waaaaay better anyway). No disrespect intended, I’m just not as deep into photography since I decided to not use it for business but keep it as a hobby. I’m working harder to be an audio expert 😉 So, if a veteran, passionate photographer like yourself knows something I don’t and wasn’t shown in the video here, I’d love to read a specific!
@@evshrug With all else being equal, having a sensor that's four times larger is inherently (perhaps 'potentially' might be a more appropriate adjective) better for image quality, in so many ways. Did you think it would be the same or worse?
Ian Wilkinson • I thought it might be more specific than “bigger is better.” But I haven’t read or seen anything that hasn’t been subject to diminishing returns. Maybe it’s just me, and maybe I do know all the inherent advantages of a digital sensor the size of 35mm film. And, maybe it’s just my personal use case that doesn’t benefit: I don’t have a load of old film lenses (and those I do have, are manual and adapted to my M4/3 great with IBIS), my 25mm f/1.8 surprised me how narrow (and sometimes difficultly narrow!) the DoF can be, and the current gen of M4/3 sensors have print/commercial acceptable High ISO about two stops higher than I actually use. Maybe if I had many old film lenses (and liked vignetting/Digital comp in every shot) in 2019, and I needed very short DoF with even kit zoom lenses, or shot children indoors with low artificial/ambient lighting, a larger sensor would make more sense. And someday that last point might even become important, but I’m pretty sure I’ll be able to manage.
Excellent in-depth review, Gordon. I like how you highlight the camera's strengths as well as weaknesses. Another feature that they've dropped in this newest version that I haven't seen anyone mention yet: the battery holder for the grip! I have the original E-M5 MkI with the HLD-6 grip, and the vertical shutter button and controls were so handy! It could have turned the camera into a mini-E-M1X (but I think that's what they were trying to avoid).

My reasons are: Over 10 years of m43 shooting I have (almost😏) the glas I need - both larger pro lenses and the small and light stuff. For allround use the em1 is the camera to get - it handles better, bigger battery, two cards etc. Now, I like to have a backup camera. This used to be an em10 m2, but noise and IBIS was lacking. If I where a pro photographer I would by another em1 m2, but I'm not. The em5 m3 gives roughly the same IBIS and IQ as the em1 and with small glas it IS a bit more portable. And I love the feel and style - could be because my first camera was an OM 2 in 1978. So my take is: If you only want one camera and it shall be versatile and offer pro longuevity and robustness - get the em1 m2. But the em5 m3 is a loveable camera and IS more portable with small glass. And the plastic housing? Guess it might actual be more robust than a metal house being lighter and more flexible. It feels good in my hands and does'nt feel as cold as metal in the winther👍
Excellent review Gordon. I'm glad you put some emphasis on some of the photographer aids and advantages that MFT brings to the table, rather than focusing on outright image quality. Btw isn't that 8mm 1.8 Fisheye lens a gem!
I will add my vote to others here. I enjoy this detailed format and your methodical approach. I find it fair, and if I were in the market for a new camera I would know exactly what the pros and cons are of this particular model. This one would suit my needs perfectly, had I not opted for the Sony APSC system 5 years ago and heavily invested in lenses.

Thanks for another brilliant review! One note - as a Fuji owner I just wanted to point out that the Fuji X-H1 is selling new for under 1000£ (incl. the battery grip) - with stabilization and really good weather proofing (have been out in harsh rain with mine without any complicaitons) :)
I bought a Panny G1 more than ten years ago. My hope was that the tech was on their side, because the size was so great. People went nuts for the Sony FF, but with lenses the cost explodes along with the size. It was so appealing though, that huge sensor, but how much is it really worth? The 'total package' progress is pretty striking, especially video. You need good 4k and you need the fast focus and you need vlogging features and you want stabilization that eliminates the external aids. This is a practical approach to evaluating these mid price cameras. A lot of people emphasize the dynamic range of the Sony FF cameras. I just tend to want 'good enough' but the weather sealing and the 5 stop stabilization are very nice features for this step up in price. It was worth the time to watch this video. Micro 4/3 seems a bit underappreciated.
Ah, dynamic range. That’s something I’m not super well versed in with comparison between m4/3 and FF. I do know that sensor efficiency has improved across the board for all cameras since the G1 (and my E-620 from around the same time), so my general impression is that the difference between 35mm and m4/3 DR and ISO Noise has been narrowed and noticeable differences have been pushed to more extreme situations, and so (again, my impression) is that they’re pretty much all super good and way better than film in these respects, so why not enjoy the smaller size, image stabilization, and competent hybrid capabilities of m4/3rds?
Great little camera. I was experimenting in the last 3 years, buying cameras by Canon, Nikon, Panasonic and Olympus in all formats - full frame, APS-C and this. At the end, the camera that I left in my bag was the very similar E-M1 II. Great little gadget. My advice would be only to go to an actual shop and see one. These cameras are tiny. I'm a large person, with bigger hands and I doubt I could use smaller camera than my current one comfortably. So, see if it fits, and afterwards buy it online, where deals are usually better ;)

Best review on this camera I've seen so far. Really appreciate the detailed video testing. You showed the EM5.3 to be quite capable with video while people keep trying to steer me towards the G85/G9. I'm feeling more confident now to get the Em5.3 as my first serious camera, and taking it for travel vlogging.
Recently I took a look at this again now that Olympus slashed prices in US by $300. Can grab this for $799-$899 now. Went back and rewatched DPReview's, normally I always at least kind of agree with Chris and Jordan, but man, they totally missed the mark on this. They were comparing it to the G9, GH5, and E1MX while saying how much better the G9 and the like was.... Like... What, those cameras are MASSIVE compared to this one. I moved from a GX85 to a Fuji X-T4, and I LOVE the X-T4's absolutely mind blowing performance, but it purely is a "dedicated shooter" camera. I have to plan my day/shots around it because it's heavy, the gear is heavy, and it's huge. I miss just throwing my GX85+20mm pancake into my jacket pocket and going out. I literally threw my GX85 into my zip up jacket and rode roller coasters, haha. This camera is just a smidge bigger than the GX85 and 50g lighter, so I think I'm gonna jump in on this now as my new portable vacation street shooter. I'll take the extra few mm's for a mic jack over my old GX85!
Thanks for the review Gordon, it’s a lovely camera. As for me I decided to go for the fuji system for my super compact camera but this Olympus has some features that are missing on the fuji, like the possibility to apply art filters when developing the raw files in-camera or to apply them to movies. I have seen this in another review of the em-10 iii and I bet this model has this feature too, including the transition effects applied to movies which I found very interesting.....

The EM5.3 might be my first Olympus camera. Going to try and use it has a ultra pack able B cam for my GH5S. Really hoping the EM1.3 has better video features.

Great review. I used a EM5 markii for a while, then wondered about up grading to the markiii. I went to an Olympus "open day" where I could try all the lenses and cameras. I came to the conclusion the EM1 markii was better for me than the newer EM5 markiii. So I bought it and love it.
Thank you, Gordon, another great review. I have Lumix G9 and recently bought Sony a6600 with 16-55 f/2.8 G. The jpeg quality from G9 and autofocus during the video are not that kind of good. I am happier with my new Sony a6600 setup.
Lots of arguing from people with "this channel has no content" who have likely never tried more than one camera. Someone could post a video masterpiece and people would hate it simply because of their layperson interpretation of a camera spec sheet and test chart results.

The Auto ISO in M for video would be very nice to have. I DO like that you can assign ISO to one of the dials, and it will work while shooting. I think your summary is spot-on, though, the 5 MkIII is a great, versatile all-around platform. It may not be the greatest at some things, but it does enough that it's a great camera in its own. Hopefully, some firmware tweaks will resolve a few issues we have with it.

Many thanks :) As a long term m43 shooter, I have been using a Panasonic G9 and GX9 which I really like, but I recently got into Sony FF territory and bought some lenses. As a result, I am considering selling both my Panasonic cameras (G9 is too big, and GX9 has not enough features) and replace them with just a E-M5.3 I think this camera ticks all the boxes for my use of the camera :)

I came across your video as I've had the E-M5 Mark ii for YEARS and I absolutely love everything about the camera. like you say, its small, its powerful, its as good as my bigger Sony I regularly use to shoot on - but its absolutely on its last legs. being held together by electrical tape and so many issues haha. Im currently deciding what ti upgrade to and this was so helpful. Im considering the E-M5 Mark iii as even though its not the "newest" if it's a little bit more upgraded than the mark ii it'll be perfect for me. Just trying to find out whether I can still change fps on the mark iii!
You mention aspect ratio which is one reason why im looking at the M43 system. I can get the same field of view as my Nikon but with more headroom. And for real estate photography and homes that are being built with higher ceilings and 2 storey on compact blocks of land the M43 system is where i find really works. Theres no problem with noise as we shoot everything bracketed and throw away most image details that dont work..... so its a moot point to argue that.
This morning I had to abandon a cruise ship arrival with the E-M10 II, because it proved as sensitive to cold and humidity as two of my pocket zooms did last decade. I gott the E-M10 II working again with a couple of wafts of a heat blower at home. The E-M5 III also answers a couple of other concerns. I would like the weather-resistant 14-1500mm lens sold with the E-M5 III body here in New Zealand.
Yes, a 4 year old video, but as always so well done. Always enjoy! I’ve been considering picking up a used EM5iii as it still looks like a great camera. Too bad about not having auto iso in manual movie mode (the OM5 does allow for), but for me not a significant concern.
Great complete review. I can't agree more with your comment about checking prices on the EM1- Mark II before buying the M5- Mark III as I believe the ergonomics of the M1 are vastly superior to the M5, plus you get 3 Custom setting accessible from the control wheel and two SD Card slots as well as over all better build quality.

What a bummer about missing auto iso in manual movie mode! Such an essential video feature to suppress at this price! Thanks to you Gordon for mentioning it, and the non-workaround. The only other reviewer to mention it is Camera Conspiracies. Are there no other video people reviewing Olympus gear? M5.3 has so much going for it, good C-AF with the new phase detect AF, good stabilization, a semi-flat profile, small size and weight. Bad choice to leave off auto iso. Have to go to the M1.2 and lug around its hulking body, all for auto iso. Really dumb tradeoff, Olympus. It’s an enthusiast camera not a point and shoot. Money stays in my pocket for another day.
I can currently buy a G9 body for just under $1400 Aud on eBay with a discount code (Australian stock) and the E-M5mkiii for $1900 Or $1850 if you’re lucky. Many better features on the G9 for the sacrifice of a little size. Unfortunately it seems they’re not encouraging others to consider changing systems as the 90D and Z50 are much cheaper as well. Pricing themselves out of business? Their E-M1 mkii is much better value too. I hope once the honeymoon period is over and they’ve gouged their faithful early adopters like they did with the E-M1X the price becomes more reasonable. The only advantage it seems here is size and minor weight advantage. But it’s at too higher cost.....currently. Nice work again Gordon.
Hmmm.... Interesting. I could do with a replacement for my G80 and this would probably pair with my G9 quite well. Might be a bit confusing using two different menu systems though.

I have had the 5MK2 and the 1Mk2 and the Pen F and now have the Panny G9 and 5 Mk3 and the Pen F again, not up to the other two but I love it anyway. What I do miss in your review, for reasons of availability I assume, is the 12 - 45 F4 Pro lens, which is superb and perfectly balanced for this camera. It is also very sharp and its slow performance offset by the wonderful stabilization. Your longer reports are very thorough and professional and can be the basis for an expensive purchase. Hi Gordon, thanks for another great review, I’ve also just bought your out of camera book, which is a great example of how you can get amazing prints from a variety of cameras. Can I ask if you’ve had many chances of using the EM5 3 on a tripod, as there are disturbing reports of the tripod screw failing (to be fair mostly from use with tripod mounted straps than “normal” tripod use)? I don’t use tripod mounted straps, but worry about mounting an EM5 3 with a heavy lens on a tripod for long exposure/astro photography
@@samandchar2004 thanks for buying my book! I've heard reports of threads failing on a bunch of cameras, so I wouldn't worry too much, just don't put anything too big or heavy on there - or basically, don't hang a lens off the mount if it has its own tripod collar / foot. Anything that doesn't have a foot should be fine, and if it doses have a foot, use this instead on the tripod / mount.

You asked if people liked this long-form approach to reviewing a camera. Personally, I love it. I appreciate the long-form because I want to know ALL the details about a camera like this. AND I love the troubleshooting approach you take - anticipating the questions a consumer might ask. I particularly like the sections where you compare/contrast the OM-D E-M5 III with the alternatives in roughly the same price range, even those at a slightly higher price such as the OM-D E-M1 II and the Panasonic G9.
Watching the video really helped me organize my own thoughts about what I really want and need in a video camera and which model might suit me best.

Fair review. You point out the strengths and weaknesses of the system. Many just discount the EM5 and say it's too expensive without actually discussing all the capabilities.
Another great review, Gordon. One thing I'd note, though, is that whilst the M43 lens lineup is extensive, we STILL don't have a small weathersealed prime to suit the Em5 series. Even if they just gave us the 17 or 25 with weathersealing, much as Fuji do with the F/2's. The Pro primes are great, but not exactly small.
Jason Hannigan There are some options. None like the Olympus jewel-like 1.8 lenses (yet, that I know of), but there are choices like the excellent Sigma 16mm f/1.4 (which, while a little larger due to being brighter, is not heavy at all and offers quite respectable quality).
@@jamespeirce2582 the sigmas are great, and yes the 16 and 56 are sealed. But if I'm carrying 1 4's I may as well go with the 1.2's . Panasonic have also just weathersealed the 25/1.4 but again it's not small. I'm just a little surprised that after 10 years of a system based on compact quality that Oly haven't bothered with w/s 1.8 primes considering the Em5 is marketed as small and rugged.
And neither have Panny fwiw. Even the Mic isn't weathersealed! A sealed PL15 would be great.
Jason Hannigan The 1.2 primes are noticeably larger and heavier, especially vs the Sigmas which are designed to be lower weight.
On one hand, I agree, and I’d love to have those 1.8 primes weather sealed as well. But even still the Sigmas afford an extremely small and portable weather sealed package compared to realistic alternatives. And one imagines a 1.8 would serve in most cases? They can handle modest exposure.
Olympus is making some weather sealed f/4 professional zooms right now, roughly in line with the “holy trinity” focal length, which are focused heavily and small size and allow another (future) option. Maybe after that they will release some II 1.8 prime versions with weather sealing (we can wish). Or maybe Panasonic keeps at it.
James Peirce The 12-45 f4 and the wide angle f4 on the way seem weird at first, but if they release a 12 f2, 17 1.8, 251.8, 45 1.8 and dare I say, the legendary 75 1.8 as wether sealed mkii lenses, that’s some serious options for a compact wether sealed travellers kit

Absolutely marvelous comprehensive review! I've just purchased the EM5 mkiii, after agonizing over whether to buy the EM1 mkii. You have given me more confidence in my choice. I do primarily shoot birds, so ISO1600 is often necessary, but today's noise reduction software is so good that it often doesn't matter. I used to be a Nikon shooter, but I like the fact that in my Panny and now Olympus cameras I can adjust exposure compensation and see what the picture will eventually look like all through the viewfinder.

A very interesting survey of this camera, (which I bought 2 days ago!). Having had Olympus film cameras (OM1n, OM2n and OM4Ti) for many years I swapped to Canon EOS film and digital early this century for the superior autofocus lenses then available. Now I have come back to Olympus as I can’t cope with the weight of the Canon gear any longer! The EM-5 Mklll reminds me very much of the OM4Ti, which was a very clever camera- whether I will make use of all the features of the EM-5 remains to be seen, but Olympus are once again ahead of the game, I think.
My EM10 Mark ii reminds me so much of the old Olympus film cameras. OM2, OM4Ti and even the OM10 but arguably even more attractive at least for 21st century. It was a metal camera too wgich for entr level wasn't really entry level!👍😇
As a long time Nikon dslr shooter, I am just beginning my journey into M4/3 sensors, and i must say your reviews serve the dual purpose of broadening my horizons and making every dang gone camera seem like the one. Top notch content upload.

Another great review. Thx! As you mentioned in your video there is nothing out on the market which beats the variety of available lenses of M4/3. Because of that there is no question which system I am going to keep. I don't tend to take pictures of fighting black cats in an unlit tunnel.
Olympus MFT has two advantages to help overcome some of the disadvantages comparing noise performance with larger sensors. The smaller sensor gives a deeper depth of which means in many cases you can use a larger aperture to allow more light in and lower ISO’s . The smaller sensor also allows an amazing IBIS system again allowing lower iso. So for many types of shooting MFT noise performance disadvantages aren’t as bad as you might think.
High iso noise to the degree is solved when using dxo noise reduction technology. Up to certain number of iso results are just amazing.
Great review! I think that the use of a plastic body is more in the heads of people than it is really an issue. Polycarbonate is a very durable material and is even used on outside parts of cars for years. Plastic sounds cheap and not durable, but I think people will be surprised in the long run. My Garmin motorcycle GPS has seen quite some abuse and still looks fine and also a metal body can scratch. About the articulating screen: one other advantage is that you can skip a protector, just flip it around with the screen on the inside and it is well protected.
I wholeheartedly concur! I own the em5 mkiii, having just upgraded from the em10 mkii, and it does feel less dense. When I'm sitting in my couch fondling the camera and thinking about the plasticky build, it does bother me a bit (especially if watching a negative review simultaneously). However, when I'm shooting the camera feels and works great, and I don't think about the plastic build at all. So, in my opinion, anyone who is considering this camera (maybe preferring the form factor over that of the em1 mk2) should not be scared off by the polycarbonate.

Thanks for a very thorough review Gordon. I got a fantastic deal on the EM 1 mk ii - same price as the EM5 mk iii. It really is worth looking around carefully. It also helps that I prefer the body shape of the EM 1 and find it better for use with my 40-150 f2.8.

I recently returned a Nikon Z50 for the Olympus Em5 mkiii and I couldn't be happier. The Z50 was excellent but I really like the IBIS, Pro capture, live composite, and high res shot of the Olympus. I originally had a Em10 mark I and the updated 20mp sensor in the Em5iii is a huge improvement especially in dynamic range and higher iso noise control. Solid camera!
I'm looking at the EM5 iii as an upgrade to the EM10 ii. Seems a lot better for autofocus which is pretty useless on the EM10 ii on video though pretty good for stills.

Great review Gordon! You really nailed it when you said due to "some questionable decisions made by its rivals" this is still a compelling camera even arriving late. It's what I like about this camera, the features and capability far outweighs the "negatives."
A polycarbonate body has better shock absorption than a cast metal body. It deforms slighty on impact, thereby reducing the G-forces that affect the internal mechanisms, much like what car bumpers do when you bump into another car when parking (a metal bumper will simply bend). If you look at the TG-series, they are all made with polycarbonate and they are tough!
Also, the Nikon D750, D850 and the Canon EOS range are polycarbonate, and yet no one complains about it.
Exactly, it's all about perceptions rather than reality. Some plastics are very strong.
Thanks for making this review with the em5iii. I have the em5ii, i love it, but im having problems with the AF when doing interviews. I find it drifting off even when the interviewee was staying still. I think the em5iii will be perfect for me.

I can see you were using stabilisation mode 2 which is sensor shift only (and results in warpy corners). I've found that the stabilisation mode 1 (sensor and electronic) works best

I've always had a soft spot for Olympus cameras, starting with an OM-1 in the 70s and culminating with an E-M1 four years ago when I changed to FF for its inherently higher IQ. I still hanker after a current Olympus, if only for the style, size, ergonomics and access to some lovely glass - notably the 75mm f/1.8 which I reluctantly let go. Another highly competent review, thanks.
By “inherently higher IQ,” what do you mean?
I’ve also gone from film to digital (for me it was a complete system switch from Pentax to Olympus 4/3, but I hadn’t heavily invested in extra lenses or other system-specific accessories), but then I stuck with Olympus. The inherent compactness and reliability of the 4/3 and m4/3 system design (smaller lenses, dust filter) and other Olympus hallmarks (Color reproduction, IBIS, and ergonomics except for my last camera, the E-PL5, eugh!) has kept me satisfied and sticking with the system (just got a G85... haven’t played with it for more than 2 days yet).
However, I see others state that 35mm sensors have higher IQ, so I’m curious if there’s something I simply don’t know. From Gordon’s E-M5 mk III review above, it seems the Sony has better autofocus (but Sony and Olympus seem to be the best on the Mirrorless market, so that doesn’t seem FF inherent), there are Headphone and microphone jacks on higher end Sony, Panasonic, and Olympus camera’s (not IQ, but not FF dependent either), and high ISO noise (this IS inherent to FF, at equivalent efficiency, but sensor tech has improved to where an E-M5 mk III has better noise performance than an old FF Canon 5D, and it’s all moot to me anyway as I only bought ISO 1600 film once and modern results are waaaaay better anyway).
No disrespect intended, I’m just not as deep into photography since I decided to not use it for business but keep it as a hobby. I’m working harder to be an audio expert 😉 So, if a veteran, passionate photographer like yourself knows something I don’t and wasn’t shown in the video here, I’d love to read a specific!
@@evshrug With all else being equal, having a sensor that's four times larger is inherently (perhaps 'potentially' might be a more appropriate adjective) better for image quality, in so many ways. Did you think it would be the same or worse?
Ian Wilkinson • I thought it might be more specific than “bigger is better.” But I haven’t read or seen anything that hasn’t been subject to diminishing returns.
Maybe it’s just me, and maybe I do know all the inherent advantages of a digital sensor the size of 35mm film. And, maybe it’s just my personal use case that doesn’t benefit: I don’t have a load of old film lenses (and those I do have, are manual and adapted to my M4/3 great with IBIS), my 25mm f/1.8 surprised me how narrow (and sometimes difficultly narrow!) the DoF can be, and the current gen of M4/3 sensors have print/commercial acceptable High ISO about two stops higher than I actually use. Maybe if I had many old film lenses (and liked vignetting/Digital comp in every shot) in 2019, and I needed very short DoF with even kit zoom lenses, or shot children indoors with low artificial/ambient lighting, a larger sensor would make more sense. And someday that last point might even become important, but I’m pretty sure I’ll be able to manage.
Excellent in-depth review, Gordon. I like how you highlight the camera's strengths as well as weaknesses. Another feature that they've dropped in this newest version that I haven't seen anyone mention yet: the battery holder for the grip! I have the original E-M5 MkI with the HLD-6 grip, and the vertical shutter button and controls were so handy! It could have turned the camera into a mini-E-M1X (but I think that's what they were trying to avoid).
Thank you Gordon for another detailed and fair review.. will emmidiately buy you a coffee when finished here. I've had the em1 m2 from it was launched and have just bought the em5 m3. My reasons are: Over 10 years of m43 shooting I have (almost😏) the glas I need - both larger pro lenses and the small and light stuff. For allround use the em1 is the camera to get - it handles better, bigger battery, two cards etc.
Now, I like to have a backup camera. This used to be an em10 m2, but noise and IBIS was lacking. If I where a pro photographer I would by another em1 m2, but I'm not. The em5 m3 gives roughly the same IBIS and IQ as the em1 and with small glas it IS a bit more portable. And I love the feel and style - could be because my first camera was an OM 2 in 1978.
So my take is: If you only want one camera and it shall be versatile and offer pro longuevity and robustness - get the em1 m2. But the em5 m3 is a loveable camera and IS more portable with small glass. And the plastic housing? Guess it might actual be more robust than a metal house being lighter and more flexible. It feels good in my hands and does'nt feel as cold as metal in the winther👍

I bought a Panny G1 more than ten years ago. My hope was that the tech was on their side, because the size was so great. People went nuts for the Sony FF, but with lenses the cost explodes along with the size. It was so appealing though, that huge sensor, but how much is it really worth? The 'total package' progress is pretty striking, especially video. You need good 4k and you need the fast focus and you need vlogging features and you want stabilization that eliminates the external aids. This is a practical approach to evaluating these mid price cameras. A lot of people emphasize the dynamic range of the Sony FF cameras. I just tend to want 'good enough' but the weather sealing and the 5 stop stabilization are very nice features for this step up in price. It was worth the time to watch this video. Micro 4/3 seems a bit underappreciated.

Ah, dynamic range. That’s something I’m not super well versed in with comparison between m4/3 and FF. I do know that sensor efficiency has improved across the board for all cameras since the G1 (and my E-620 from around the same time), so my general impression is that the difference between 35mm and m4/3 DR and ISO Noise has been narrowed and noticeable differences have been pushed to more extreme situations, and so (again, my impression) is that they’re pretty much all super good and way better than film in these respects, so why not enjoy the smaller size, image stabilization, and competent hybrid capabilities of m4/3rds?
Great little camera. I was experimenting in the last 3 years, buying cameras by Canon, Nikon, Panasonic and Olympus in all formats - full frame, APS-C and this. At the end, the camera that I left in my bag was the very similar E-M1 II. Great little gadget. My advice would be only to go to an actual shop and see one. These cameras are tiny. I'm a large person, with bigger hands and I doubt I could use smaller camera than my current one comfortably. So, see if it fits, and afterwards buy it online, where deals are usually better ;)

Best review on this camera I've seen so far. Really appreciate the detailed video testing. You showed the EM5.3 to be quite capable with video while people keep trying to steer me towards the G85/G9. I'm feeling more confident now to get the Em5.3 as my first serious camera, and taking it for travel vlogging.
Recently I took a look at this again now that Olympus slashed prices in US by $300. Can grab this for $799-$899 now. Went back and rewatched DPReview's, normally I always at least kind of agree with Chris and Jordan, but man, they totally missed the mark on this. They were comparing it to the G9, GH5, and E1MX while saying how much better the G9 and the like was.... Like... What, those cameras are MASSIVE compared to this one.
I moved from a GX85 to a Fuji X-T4, and I LOVE the X-T4's absolutely mind blowing performance, but it purely is a "dedicated shooter" camera. I have to plan my day/shots around it because it's heavy, the gear is heavy, and it's huge. I miss just throwing my GX85+20mm pancake into my jacket pocket and going out. I literally threw my GX85 into my zip up jacket and rode roller coasters, haha. This camera is just a smidge bigger than the GX85 and 50g lighter, so I think I'm gonna jump in on this now as my new portable vacation street shooter. I'll take the extra few mm's for a mic jack over my old GX85!

As for me I decided to go for the fuji system for my super compact camera but this Olympus has some features that are missing on the fuji, like the possibility to apply art filters when developing the raw files in-camera or to apply them to movies. I have seen this in another review of the em-10 iii and I bet this model has this feature too, including the transition effects applied to movies which I found very interesting.....

I own the em5 mkiii, having just upgraded from the em10 mkii, and it does feel less dense. When I'm sitting in my couch fondling the camera and thinking about the plasticky build, it does bother me a bit (especially if watching a negative review simultaneously). However, when I'm shooting the camera feels and works great, and I don't think about the plastic build at all. So, in my opinion, anyone who is considering this camera (maybe preferring the form factor over that of the em1 mk2) should not be scared off by the polycarbonate.
I m seriously thinking upgrading my old beloved omd em10 mkii for this new model, and I ve seen many reviews of the camera. This one is probably the most factual and useful one. Thanks man !
The EM5.3 might be my first Olympus camera. Going to try and use it has a ultra pack able B cam for my GH5S.
Really hoping the EM1.3 has better video features.

Replying to myself, in Hong Kong, E-M5 Mark III is 45% more expensive than E-M1 Mark II or G9 (10.300 vs 7000 HK$) LOL ! X-H1 is only 5450 HK$, pity about the preamp.

Great review. I used a EM5 markii for a while, then wondered about up grading to the markiii. I went to an Olympus "open day" where I could try all the lenses and cameras. I came to the conclusion the EM1 markii was better for me than the newer EM5 markiii. So I bought it and love it.

Lots of arguing from people with "this channel has no content" who have likely never tried more than one camera. Someone could post a video masterpiece and people would hate it simply because of their layperson interpretation of a camera spec sheet and test chart results.
Don’t forget all the vintage manual lenses out there-from pentax to Soviet Juptiter lenses, they all adapt onto my olys perfectly well!

The Auto ISO in M for video would be very nice to have. I DO like that you can assign ISO to one of the dials, and it will work while shooting.
I think your summary is spot-on, though, the 5 MkIII is a great, versatile all-around platform. It may not be the greatest at some things, but it does enough that it's a great camera in its own. Hopefully, some firmware tweaks will resolve a few issues we have with it.

Many thanks :) As a long term m43 shooter, I have been using a Panasonic G9 and GX9 which I really like, but I recently got into Sony FF territory and bought some lenses. As a result, I am considering selling both my Panasonic cameras (G9 is too big, and GX9 has not enough features) and replace them with just a E-M5.3 I think this camera ticks all the boxes for my use of the camera :)
what an absolutely excellent review! I came across your video as I've had the E-M5 Mark ii for YEARS and I absolutely love everything about the camera. like you say, its small, its powerful, its as good as my bigger Sony I regularly use to shoot on - but its absolutely on its last legs. being held together by electrical tape and so many issues haha.
Im currently deciding what ti upgrade to and this was so helpful. Im considering the E-M5 Mark iii as even though its not the "newest" if it's a little bit more upgraded than the mark ii it'll be perfect for me. Just trying to find out whether I can still change fps on the mark iii!
You mention aspect ratio which is one reason why im looking at the M43 system. I can get the same field of view as my Nikon but with more headroom. And for real estate photography and homes that are being built with higher ceilings and 2 storey on compact blocks of land the M43 system is where i find really works.
Theres no problem with noise as we shoot everything bracketed and throw away most image details that dont work..... so its a moot point to argue that.
This morning I had to abandon a cruise ship arrival with the E-M10 II, because it proved as sensitive to cold and humidity as two of my pocket zooms did last decade. I gott the E-M10 II working again with a couple of wafts of a heat blower at home. The E-M5 III also answers a couple of other concerns. I would like the weather-resistant 14-1500mm lens sold with the E-M5 III body here in New Zealand.
Yes, a 4 year old video, but as always so well done. Always enjoy! I’ve been considering picking up a used EM5iii as it still looks like a great camera. Too bad about not having auto iso in manual movie mode (the OM5 does allow for), but for me not a significant concern.
Great complete review. I can't agree more with your comment about checking prices on the EM1- Mark II before buying the M5- Mark III as I believe the ergonomics of the M1 are vastly superior to the M5, plus you get 3 Custom setting accessible from the control wheel and two SD Card slots as well as over all better build quality.

I think this would work great for food photography along with the 12-200 3.5-6.3 lense as a package. Also I think the image stabilisation would work for doing hand held b roll.

What a bummer about missing auto iso in manual movie mode! Such an essential video feature to suppress at this price! Thanks to you Gordon for mentioning it, and the non-workaround. The only other reviewer to mention it is Camera Conspiracies. Are there no other video people reviewing Olympus gear? M5.3 has so much going for it, good C-AF with the new phase detect AF, good stabilization, a semi-flat profile, small size and weight. Bad choice to leave off auto iso. Have to go to the M1.2 and lug around its hulking body, all for auto iso. Really dumb tradeoff, Olympus. It’s an enthusiast camera not a point and shoot. Money stays in my pocket for another day.
I can currently buy a G9 body for just under $1400 Aud on eBay with a discount code (Australian stock) and the E-M5mkiii for $1900 Or $1850 if you’re lucky. Many better features on the G9 for the sacrifice of a little size. Unfortunately it seems they’re not encouraging others to consider changing systems as the 90D and Z50 are much cheaper as well. Pricing themselves out of business? Their E-M1 mkii is much better value too. I hope once the honeymoon period is over and they’ve gouged their faithful early adopters like they did with the E-M1X the price becomes more reasonable.
The only advantage it seems here is size and minor weight advantage. But it’s at too higher cost.....currently.

lower weight and more cheapish feel makes this camera much less attractive to those who waited so long for Mark II replacement. Sorry, Olympus, but intentional downgrade was a mistake.

I have had the 5MK2 and the 1Mk2 and the Pen F and now have the Panny G9 and 5 Mk3 and the Pen F again, not up to the other two but I love it anyway. What I do miss in your review, for reasons of availability I assume, is the 12 - 45 F4 Pro lens, which is superb and perfectly balanced for this camera. It is also very sharp and its slow performance offset by the wonderful stabilization. Your longer reports are very thorough and professional and can be the basis for an expensive purchase.
