    Thanks for the informative review, Joseph! It’s good to know that Olympus is still alive and well and developing great products.

    Moving up from the em5i (have 12-50, 17 f1.7, 9-18 and 75-300). Mainly use it for adventure photography, backcountry skiing and hiking, also some street and astrophotography, would like to capture crisp stills and video of the family dogs running, perhaps birds in flight. Should note I also have the TG5, so if I’m going a distance and weight is a big factor I take the TG5. Waited a long time for the em5iii to be announced, now with the internal functions and price known, I'm not sure I need another small camera and I'm being enticed by the em1ii with its bigger grip and battery. I enjoy the 5mi but the buttons are quite small and easy to accidently press when trying to move fast and or with gloves on or in the dark, the em1ii might be better. Handled the em5iii and the em1ii at the launch event, both felt good, em5iii better than the em5ii, but the em1ii is making it tough choice.

    The em5iii is selling in my local camera store for $1,400 with the 12-45 f4 kit lense. To get the body and 12-40 f2.8 lense would cost $2,000. Do you think it's worth the upgrade? This sounds a bit high to me?

    I guess that as it often happens, we'll get a significant EM1 MII firmware update. That'll be cool

    Hey, does anyone know if the preamps on the em5 mkiii are any good? That was a huge issue with my em5 mkii. Super hissy preamps. I always had to use an external recorder (not so compared to the G85 which had great preamps , but terrible autofocus)
    I really don't mind the plastic, especially with the better image quality and autofocus upgrade. I'd pull the trigger if someone can vouch for the audio.

    can you do a long exposure test between the em5ii and em5iii? basically shoot raw 20 secs iso1600 on both cameras with lens cap and noise reduction off. compare the black outputs noise. intereseted to find out if there is a difference in noise level between the two. :)

    Great initial thoughts review. The iii is what I was hoping for--still weather sealed and flippy screen, CAF and video from the E-M1ii, in a smaller body. Smaller battery, single card slot, no headphone jack, all fine with me as long as the CAF works in video. Still interested in a grip for the iii, just in case I like it so much that I wind up using it with the larger lenses instead of the E-M1X. So, whatever you can tell us about the available grip during your hands-on review will be of interest to me. Thanks for the early review.

    • @JosephEllisPhotographer
      @JosephEllisPhotographer  5 років тому +1

      As far as I know you'll be able to get the grip as a trigger/extension but they won't be producing the battery holder/vertical button portion of the grip for the MKIII. The video features look to be even slightly better than the EM1MKII since you gain 120FPS HD and the focus system will be identical. It's awesome for run and gun.

      @@JosephEllisPhotographer Interesting, I wonder if the E-M1 MKII will get a future firmware update adding 120fps HD since its the same processor and image sensor. While they are still at it maybe throw in "My Menu" to both the E-M1 mark ii and E-M5 mark iii

    Regarding the battery. The inclusion of USB charging allows the battery to be charged (in camera) from a 12V car socket. It would be great if camera makers offered a 12V DC input battery charger as an optional extra. Mobile home power systems are 12V, currently a DC to AC inverter has to be used to charge the battery externally.

    I recently joined the ranks of Olympus users. Thanks for all the informative videos, Joseph. You (along with a couple of others) have brought me up to speed on the m4/3 systems and features.
    You summed up the key differences between EM5 MKiii and EM1 MKii as well as the reasons why you would choose one or the other. How about EM10 MKiii vs EM5 MKiii? For an enthusiast / hobbyist with the EM10 MKiii and a meager yet ever growing set of Olympus lenses who shoots still almost exclusively, would you recommend upgrading to EM5 MKiii? Or even EM5 MKii, as I'm sure they will be even more accessible?
    Once again, thanks for all the good stuff. Keep it up good sir!

    • @JosephEllisPhotographer

      Easy, if you shoot moving subjects the upgrade will be amazing for you. Other than that phase detect AF I don’t think there’s anything that will make a substantial difference in still image performance. My 2 cents.

    I own a Lumix G9, which has been out for a couple of years and it's not clear to me what I would gain from an EM5MK3, other than dual stabilisation with a couple of Olympus lenses? And the Lumix does 4k at 60 fps.

    • @JosephEllisPhotographer
      @JosephEllisPhotographer  5 років тому +1

      Tony Green Well, if it’s not broke don’t fix it right:) To my thinking though the biggest upgrade for you would probably be the autofocus, the phase detection tracking for both stills and video is pretty great and (I think) better than anything Panasonic has at the moment. Note: I haven’t done any real world shooting with a G9 so I’m not 100% familiar with its performance.

    • @JosephEllisPhotographer
      @JosephEllisPhotographer  5 років тому

      Well the EM5 MKIII has 120 FPS slow motion and being smaller it has an edge on gimbal work... the EM1MKII has the better battery, better ergonomics due to having more space on the camera body and a headphone jack. Those are the trade offs in my mind.

      Image quality and autofocus will be identical. The choice of camera mostly comes down to price, size, dual card slots (EM1MKII) and the larger battery (EM1MKII). I personally love my EM1.2 as portrait camera but if I was trying to have it as an everyday carry or to have something I could fit into a jacket pocket etc. the EM5MKIII would have an advantage. USB charging is also helpful when you’re on the run which is a benefit of the EM5III.

      True in comparison to the previous version but I was rather taking the approach of comparing it to the EM1MKII which I think is what most people will be doing as they upgrade. As far as I know the video resolutions are the same between the two with the notable exception that the EM5MKIII will do 120 FPS HD like the EM1X.

      Ashleyplayz Gamez I agree that the EM1.2 has a number of advantages (which I try to point out in the video) that would make more sense for a lot of photographers. In favor of the EM5 MKIII - 120 FPS HD slow motion video, bluetooth, USB charging on the go and maybe (depending on your preference) the OLED viewfinder. And of course, size, weight and price.

Yes the E-M5 mark iii uses a smaller battery, however, it's processor is more energy efficient than the processor in the E-M5 mark ii. Therefore the reduction in battery size does not sacrifice battery length when comparing these two camera models.

      @rogerquenault7207 5 років тому

      @@JosephEllisPhotographer I wholeheartedly agree with Momchil Yordanov a plastic body and smaller battery has made it smaller and lighter but by an almost insignificant amounts its 55grams less weight and only a few millimetres smaller, all Olympus had to do was put the 20MP sensor and PDAF from the em1 mk2 in and they could have had this out years ago at a much cheaper price, if you already have an em5 mk2 you more than likely have spare batteries, a grip and probably the extra battery holder so why make Olympus customer spend more money to replace what they already have for 4MP (which for me makes no difference) and PDAF (which for me is an upgrade)

    • @JosephEllisPhotographer
      @JosephEllisPhotographer  5 років тому

      @@rogerquenault7207 Well I was making the case that's significantly smaller than an EM1MKII (574gm) vs EM5MKIII (414gm). I think that will be the most compelling debate Olympus shooters will be making as they decide to upgrade.
      Compared to the old model, yes it is a very small savings so I'm not sure that should have been a huge priority but who knows? But far as being plastic... not sure it matters as long as the weather sealing is good. Like I said in the video, football helmets are made of plastic so it could be very tough.
      On batteries and accessories... I agree with you that it would be nice for them to make them as universal as possible. It never seems to be the case with any manufacturer.
