ep 5 - a course on OT textual criticism - the Samaritan Pentateuch and the Septuagint

Now it's time to learn more about the Samaritan Pentateuch and the Septuagint (LXX). Why is the study of the Septuagint so important? The Septuagint is the first translation of the Bible into any language. This is of interest to translation scholars in general, and also to Bible translators, since the influence of the Septuagint continues to be seen in modern versions. The theological vocabulary of the New Testament, written in Greek, cannot be understood without the Septuagint. For linguists, the Septuagint is a Greek text that gives us much information about the Koine (or common) Greek of the time. Historians of ancient Judaism are interested in the Septuagint because the translation of many passages reflects the beliefs of the Jewish translators. Finally, the Hebrew manuscripts on which the Septuagint was based were not always identical with the Masoretic Text. Several surprising translations point us to variants that existed in the Hebrew.
