You’re right. Here in central brazil winter is very dry. As soon as the rain returns in spring, catasetums start to wake up and grow.

    • @Sir_K
      @Sir_K Місяць тому

Exactly... I hope everyone understands that this orchid does NOT need water in the "Winter season" ...
it has stored in the older pseudobulbs all the energy it needs to grow roots and new pseudobulbs..
The water and nutrients that arrive with the rain season will help to build the new pseudobulbs for next season..
If you don't water it while growing , it will still grow, but with less energy the new pseudobulb will be small.
      Dale.

Thanks for actually having the energy to battle alot fo this misinformation on the internet!! I see orchid misinformation EVERYWHERE and ppl just eat it right up.. even when its obviously too good to be true. I try sometimes to educate ppl on the matter in comments but man its just too much of it..

It also creates stress and anxiety (even if it’s a small amount) for those who are new to growing certain plants. I remember doing like a week of research on UA-cam and blogs trying to see what other people did when watering their catasetums. I was so stressed out that I would kill my new babies. I’m glad someone is out there doing gods work haha ❤️

    • @paulinemegson8519

What really annoys me is that particularly with plants like orchids that are “perceived” as being difficult, you’ll get a person who through either luck or judgement, does well with them, and then proceeds to tell everyone else “how it’s done” Now, that’s ok…..to a point. But there are plenty that go so far BEYOND that point that frankly it’s ridiculous. Like the woman who lives in a tropical area, and INSISTS that HER way is the ONLY way…….she even says “do it my way”……..but doesn’t take into account ANY differences in climate between herself in the tropics…..and folks that she’s advising who are often in temperate regions, and growing indoors too!! Their situation is going to be FAR drier…..both in the air(humidity) and in the media(watering), their daylight hours might differ, and their temps will DEF be different. But no, she merrily tells beginners that if they do things HER way, it WILL work, cos hey, it does for her. And if you DARE to suggest that maybe she needs to tailor her advice a bit, she’ll argue the point. That’s something I’ve always liked about your advice Dani…..you’ve always advised people that any advice should be tempered with understanding what YOUR conditions are and you advise how culture can be modified to suit them.

Hi @MissOrchidGirl I have been following you for only a couple of years now, and I just want to thank you! I was, before actually informing myself, a terrible plant killer.
But when I started watching your videos, you gave me hope! You give such complete and simple advice that I was able to, not only make one of my Phalaenopsis Orchid flower THRICE now, but also save my other Phalaenopsis from dying because of root rot. (It had literally no roots left and it somehow made a comeback!)
I have no questions. No suggestions.
I just want you to know that you changed my life! Because now I have dozens of other plants, alive and well, that are happy with the care I am able to give them by applying most of your experienced instructions!
Continue doing what you're doing! You're awesome!

I have killed several catasetum types by following conventional advice about them, so now I have tried leaving on some live older roots during repot and started watering nee growths right away, and they are growing waaay better in my dry environment! Thanks for dedicating a video to this, and I'm sure your Wine Delight will bounce right back :)

I live in south Australia. Very dry, hot and little humidity. I have a catasetum that gets no water over our winter (may to early sept) as the weather warms up (up to 50c) then watered every day even standing in a tray of water. It does fine with that and regular feeding. So good in fact it just won grand champion at our autumn show. So definitely lots of water in spring into summer

I wouldn't devalue all of this information, the majority of this information comes from one of if not the single largest commercial breeder and grower of Catesetinae in the world. I think the hybrids might not abide by the watering rules as strictly but there is a whole lecture about how this grower went to the wild to observe their habitats and found that Catasetums tend to throw out their roots weeks before even the first rains come through. In my experience, my catasetums do better when the roots are allowed to grow several inches before regular waterings begin but are given just enough water for the bulbs to not shrivel too much.

    • @MissOrchidGirl

Hi, I was saying it’s not the end of the world if roots get wet when small, as they will not stop growing as some people just adore to shout in some of my comments. They won’t absorb water as they are not fully formed, but they won’t rot or stop growing. Evolutionary wise it makes no sense as well. And yes I have hybrids from ‘that’ hybridizer and yes it’s OK to wet their fresh small roots. Also keep in mind we are all prone to drawing wrong conclusions, even people with authority in the field. As I was saying I am putting my experience before what anyone writes on the internet, and I think I show it as clearly as humanly possible in my videos. It’s the only thing I’m comfortable taking accountability for, hence why I rely on it. That is all. As for devaluation of information… again, it doesn’t matter to me who puts it forward if evolutionary wise it makes 0 sense for the survival of the individual and if my experience says it’s not true. If my experience is not what the rule says it’s a fact, then it definitely is not a fact. If I can wet roots and be ok, you can wet roots and be ok too, I’m not a witch 😄 I wish 🧙🏻‍♀️

@@MissOrchidGirl I think it depends on the quantity of water , is not the same spraying a bit of water than let the little roots wet in sphagnum moss , the new growth can potentially rot very easily , is better to let the roots grow for beginners , it’s safer and works.

Danny, you shouldn't have wasted your daily energy on a nagging person, who stumbled upon your channel by chance ( 'cause regular viewers know you're doing your research before stating anything and you're backing it up with articles from reliable sources). And he doesn't deserve this much attention 'cause he only seeks confrontation. I've been a regular viewer for 6 years or so and I've learned so much useful tips and drew some inspirations and I thank you so so much. Your videos are helpful, well structured and very informative. Try not to get affected by some random people. Sending positive vibes 🐞🐝

I have to applaud you for knowing your stuff, doing your research, and challenging misinformation. People are quick to parrot information that they hear some where, instead of taking that info and doing some research. You showed here it takes maybe 5 minutes of using your resources, the internet, to look up the natural environment of a plant in your collection and figuring out how it logically grows.
Thanks again for being you, and I'm wishing you the best for the big move coming up!

I’ve repotted it in a shallow food storage bowl that was wide enough to hold the original growths and the weirdo. I’m hoping to be able to split it next repotting. My house is just too dry during the winter to not water at least occasionally.

Googling images of different orchids - the most common orchid "groups" in cultivation are phalaenopsis, oncidicum, dendrobium, cymbidium, paphiopedilum/phragmipedilum, vanda and epidendrum. For others, you usually need special nurseries.

Great video. All of my orchids are outside in Southwest Florida and they all get water when I irrigate and when it rains, regardless of the time of the year. When are you going to address the other side of the spectrum - water your Vandas once per day or more often in the summer time?

Hello MOG Hello I am here form your discord server, I had noticed you’d been inactive on there for some time and wondering if you’d come back anytime soon? It appears your account has been deleted leaving only the moderation system

It would be more usefull to help us prevent pseudobulbs root😅. My orchid seem to got it in autumn. When do we reduce water? Leafs did not start do dry when this happend

It would upset me, as well, to have over a decade of experience disregarded as if it were nothing. Fine to ask questions, but that just veers over into disrespect. ❤

Question: Is it possible the misunderstanding had to do with offering too much water too early? I mean, catesetums *can* be rotted by water at the wrong season.... I don't know. The comment didn't make sense as it was. Thanks, Danny, for clarifying. Even catesetums are going to act in the nature of all plants. They just need a little more careful study of *how* their environment gives them nutrients and water in order to care for them properly in our homes. You do that research for us! 💖

LOVE your channel and your knowledge sharing. Thank you! You've taught me much over the years about orchids and am able to have reblooms and orchids that thrive. Your video reminded me of some of the ones i came across, and what you said on this video about how you'd go with your own experience and understanding over what you see on the internet...? well, this came into my feed right after i clicked "back" 😂, so had to share...when i saw this, my first thought was...WHERE do orchids find Garlic as they are wrapped around a tree in the shade???? am i wrong to be skeptical here?

Sooner or later you will have to demonstrate that phalaenopsis don’t need water at all… I really wonder if the person in question does have any knowledge about orchids in general. Oh wait until they find out about bulbophyllums … lmao😂😂😂

    Dani hun,
This message is the perfect example of people who don't listen very well take in what they want to hear only and then go to another video and make unheard if comments So that the people who own the video have to go to extreme lengths to explain to everyone what this person didn't do their homework before making a comment that they clearly know nothing about Dani since you're in the video business these people try hard to discredit you. It a child somewhere with nothing better to do then pass out wrong information Because literally they don't care about the Orchids is was all about them telling you your wrong ! Please ignore these messages they are in every Utuber's channel messages trying to debunk you..

Well, if there is anything positive about people spreading this type of misinformation, at least you probably never will run out of content for videos, since there is a lot of people who will always be trolling and spouting nonsense like this everywhere 😅
But honestly I just hope it doesn't stress you out too much responding to/reading these. You can always just ignore these or not even read any comments in my honest opinion. Also giving attention more to negative comments in your videos will most likely encourage people to post more negative or misinforming comments sadly 😔
