Welcome back to another episode of Joe Macro Golf! Today, we’re excited to have Top UK Golf Coach, Levi Smith, back on the channel. In this episode, Levi and I dive deep into how the wrists work in the golf swing and why proper grip and wrist movement are crucial for your overall swing mechanics, power, and consistency.
We’ll break down key tips on how to position your wrists for maximum efficiency, as well as common mistakes golfers make that can hinder performance. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned player, mastering this part of the game will have a big impact on your results.

The rotation of the handle on the downswing is extremely important to create both downforce and also keep the face square. For some this is conscious and for others it’s subconscious! When you have stability in the wrist joint, you’ll only be able to rotate the right palm down a small (limited) amount. This is what creates consistency! When the joint/s become unstable, that’s where you’ll create inconsistent patterns in body movements - club positions- ball patterns. Remember, constant means consistent!
Great explanation. Thanks Levi
The hammer demonstration is a good analogy in understanding how the wrists unhinge but the complex manoeuvre is rotating the handle to square the face. The question therefore is the rotation of the handle a conscious purposeful action or is it a passive movement in response to body pivot rotational movement.
I guess they don't answer comments!
Fantastic question - I will ask Levi to reply on this!
We do, when we get the chance 😅
An answer for you from Levi above!
Really like the more passive move away but then blending the right wrist hinge to move the club to shaft parallel in the move away. The club face then matches your spine and you have started to hinge the right wrist without having to rotate your trail forearm that much presumably to this stage. Does the trail forearm now rotate in the second stage of the backswing to lead arm parallel/ P3?
From here I guess your right arm starts to fold as you pivot your shoulders to the top?
Hi! Thanks for taking the time to drop a comment. I’ll get Levi to reply 👍🏽
Levi, please can you help me better understand your initial transition move with your hand path in connection to trail wrist increasing the lag hinge. You look to be pushing the handle further away and this straightening your trail arm / increasing the downswing arc? Whereas other coaches have advised retaining some angle in the trail arm into the delivery position. I do like your idea that at this point the butt end / handle begins to slow down & this kicks the club head out to the ball. It looks like you’re also adding a slight twist of the handle in your right palm & also a slight spinning of the trail forearm into impact. Please could you explain this key transition move in terms of how the trail arm is straightening in relation to the trail wrist increasing the hinge. Also that last release phase into impact what is the motion of the right forearm and trail hand to square the club face. I would like to understand better the balance between the exit left move helping to square your left / lead forearm versus the right side spinning down and a feeling of the right wrist releasing the club.
I will get Levi to reply!
