  • Review of the Yamaha XT660Z Tenere. I really enjoyed the ride, quite capable for a single cylinder. It is at the more adventure end of the single cylinder dual sport crowd. I can see why many have chosen this bike for world traveling trips or as the do a bit of everything bike. Would even do ok loaded up with luggage and a pillion, though you wouldn't win any races :P
Best of all learner approved for LAMS. Enjoy the review.
    Bike Specifications:
    - 660cc single cylinder
    - 48hp
    - 58nm torque
    - 5 speed
    - 23 ltr tank (good for 500kms)
    - 213kg wet

Bought mine new in 2012 never let me down once, excellent bike. When I was looking to buy a mid range adventure/tourer I looked at all the options from all the main sellers, surprisingly there was not much price differents? Anyway what sold if for me was when I looked around the bikes from different angles, the XT660Z won it on looks & capability in my opinion compared to others in the range this had the largest petrol tank at 24 litres I believe. Most other bikes would need to refuel at least once as the XT660Z carries on passed, I went onto emergency petrol & did over 100 miles on that & still had some left when I filled her up again. I shall give the bike a score out of ten, I am 52yrs old passed my test at 16yr been riding ever since & have had some cracking bikes over the years including a ZX750RR P4, GPZ1100 Fuel injection it was like driving an elephant by the ears!! Plus too many to list. So XT660Z performance 9/10
    Off road 9/10
    Driving comfort 6/10
Seat can be a zombie making machine, over 100 miles getting off when your arse is numb, not good, such a shame.
Touring prospects 8/10 (with seat mod!)
Horse power 42BHP if I remember there are a lot of options out there to take this bike over 55BHP.
Handling 10/10 very agile I can chuck mine into some mad corners & is touch perfect with the steering, also great off road fun ride till you drop top class.
Suspension front 9/10 rear 9/10 twin brembos on two front discs one rear, keep that saying "only a fool breaks the two second rule" this bike will stop on a 10 pence piece. I was amazed at the breaking on this bike, after having a few superbikes in my time as long as you 60/40 front & rear breaks. Because of the top class breaking system on this bike it will let your mother see her grand children in the future, you will live to see another day on this (little ish!) bad boy!!(Please note not everyone's motorbike style of driving is the same, whenever you get a new or used bike & get on it practice those emergency stops that have saved my life more times than I can remember? If some young fool on a sports bike wears a t-shirt in the summer with shorts & flip flops tearing it around town, remember a good textile jacket & bottoms plus a good pair of gloves. Will make the difference becuase the fella in the t-shirt will be picking bits of road dirt that look like spots out of his body for the rest of his life, then again it depends if he has any skin left on his body after coming off at 90 mph racing around the town ffs! Play safe & live, god bless & if you made it to the bottom then you will live, good luck my friends.

I have the exact same bike, it took a bit of getting used after a 1000cc twin sports bike, glad I made the change though .
A Kev mod definitely helps and cutting the rear seat hump to make it flatter makes it a lot more comfortable.

+Kamotion Thanks. Not very fair on you guys. I considered bringing the unavailability up as I know a lot of Americans, like yourself, are furious that it is not available there. I think the thread in advrider on the 660 is 99% pissed off Americans :(

Add me to that list, COS. The lack of this bike being available in the US market forces us to choose between the DR650, KLR 650, BMW 650GS (in its various forms) and KTM 640 ADV if you want a bike that can hold its own on the pavement between off-road sections. I chose the latter (KTM) due to its superior suspension and off-road capability. No single cylinder will ever be as smooth as a twin, so start from the fact that there will be vibration on the pavement and focus your attention on where it matters most: off-road. Weight, fuel range, features (like electric and kick start), aftermarket farkles and other considerations and let them be your guide. Dual sports are limited, by definition. Therefore, we MUST have multiple bikes! Right?

I had a 636, loved it but too impractical. Sold it for an F700GS and never looked back :) Adventure bikes and dual sports just open up so much more to riding imo.

In the UK the prices on these are all over the place, used examples selling for premium prices, New examples sometimes selling absurdly cheap and then a sudden jump up. When they where first released here they where sold for peanuts, really really cheap then they jumped like £2000... I current own a GS but would like to have a crack on one of these but honestly I think I have been spoiled with the distance capabilities of the Bimmer, I think if I had access to good fire roads of lived in the Outback of Aus this would certainly make the short list..

After owning mine for more than a year, I still try to find 6th gear from time to time haha. But I love my Tenere. As you said, it’s a great all-rounder. And I’m 6’4” so the height is perfect for me. I also don’t find the seat uncomfortable on long runs, I regularly do 400-500km runs. Only issue I’ve had with mine so far is a wiring issue with the rectifier (plug corrosion). The bike comes with the tools to set the preload on front and rear suspension.

Lovely bike, I owned one, had to sell it for financial reasons, but got another one straight away as soon as my wallet stabalised.;))
Done 11000m on the latest one, bought it for £2977 with 20000 miles on the clock.
Nothing major as failures go, just had to change sprockets and chain, and front discs and break pads. The disks because of a parking lot incident with a car not giving way on a snotty surface, so the disc got bent a bit, and eventually lost the braking power in the front completely with some baaaad grinding and squeaking noise. The front disks are dirt cheap from Yamaha!!! About £50 each from Yamaha dealer in Hungary.
If it comes to long distances, you can do about 245miles in one go, but on the stock seats you wish you'd have grabbed a car if you have to go somewhere on time and don't have the luxury to rest for about 20 minutes at least once.
The fuel gauge is as accurate as me at playing basketball... it's shiiiit... DO NOT TRUST IT! It will tell you that you're running dry waaaay before you'd even touch the reserves... to be honest, I have no idea when or how the reserve will kick in...
The other bit about long distance ride is that the thompiness of the bike will numb your fingers to fish fingers... which will make operating anything with your fingers to be a pain.
All these from experience. Oh, the stock screen with an added deflector is not really enough for me with the height of 6'4", as I'd need the touring screen with the extension.
    Get an aftermarket pipe!;)))
    Enjoy the ride!

I have not ridden a 650GS single so I cannot comment. I have owned the 700GS same as the 650GS twin. Gun to my head, I would go with the Yamaha, its got the better suspension and better aftermarket support. Again I am just going from what I have read. Both worthy machines. A twin would suit you better if its just touring and dirt roads imo.

Depends on your comfort one footing it. You might struggle to get two feet down at once. I am quite light so I don’t get much sag out of the suspension, keep that in mind. Can always get the shop to lower it for you too.

I doubt it, Honda seem to be focusing on the big adventure bikes at the moment. That is where the money is. My guess will be a smaller displacement CRF1000L around the 650-800cc range. Don't get me wrong, I would love nothing more than a new XR650 or even more a XR400. Just have to pray that Honda thinks there is money in making one. +Lee Bradley The AT has the XT beat for power to weight with 90 hp and 236kg. The XT is around 48hp and 203kg'ish. The AT feels more road biased than the XT, if I was doing lots of dirt and I had to pick, it would be the XT. If I were doing mainly road with some dirt I would take the AT.

If your main focus is burning big miles with some rugged adv capabilities, the Super 10 is the tool for the job, my review here ua-cam.com/video/0mP7apaWMRk/v-deo.html. If you want to do big miles but with a heavy dirt focus, some of it technical, then the 660 is best.
      Enjoy the search!,

Yer it is a tall bike, which is difficult if you are not accustomed to tall bikes.

@JORECC You can lower the seat. It's 8cm taller than a XJ6 (a bike from my drivingschool on which I take my riding lessons), so when you lower it it shouldn't be a problem. I'm 1,75 and have a lot of room left on the XJ6.

      thanks bro!

+akn nvr Thought about the F700GS? Not quite as good off road but is very popular with shorter riders wanting an adventure bike.

+akn nvr Yer I own one so I am biased. But they are a good option as they come standard with a low seat height. They can also be factory lowered further if you need it. Good luck with he hunt!

ABS went from 12-16 Models. 8-11 Models should have no ABS. My 09 has nothing, ist the purest form of motorcycle 🥰👌🏻

Was looking at the prices of these and for only a few grand more can buy a new Honda Africa twin. The Yamaha is a nice bike but the price is a bit up there if you know what i mean, even at the second hand prices. But then again im a cheap arse because I ride a old 2005 KLR650.

    • @chroniclesofsolid
      @chroniclesofsolid  7 років тому

Yer the price of admission on one of these is not for the frugal. I personally would take a DR650 or KLR650 and use the difference to pimp it out :). Still if you want a bike ready to rumble and have plenty of money its a dam good choice.

I would wait for the XT700Z and see how that turns out. If your heart is set on a 660 then the height might be a problem. If you are happy to just use one foot down it shouldn't be an issue. It should be noted that I am very light so really didn't sag the suspension either :P

Can always lower the bike if you are too short @goAtraveler. Take it for a test ride and see what you think!
