2015 F150 Oil Change - Why I DIY

  • A little fun right outside the Project Cave completing an oil change on my 5.0 F150. I DIY because the last time I took it to an oil change place, whoever put the filter not only used a wrench (they are supposed to be hand tightened), but he used the wrong size wrench. This crimped the end and put a couple of tiny holes in it. I have been enjoying changing it myself and haven't been back to one of those places since.
    Before someone says that road debris could have caused it, that is highly doubtful. The oil filter location is shielded by part of the frame.
    Any way, I like doing it myself again. I get a full synthetic change and air filters for less than half of what those places charge.

    Thank you for the video. For oil filters that come with the gasket (O-ring) already installed, just rub a little oil on the gasket where it touches the engine block. Do not remove the gasket from the filter and put oil on both sides.

    Get the oil warm. Not full temp but warm. It will drain better & the filter is easier to remove.
    I also let it drain as long as possible. Some times I just let it drip while I go eat dinner & some times I leave it to drip while I mow. I've even left it sit dripping till the next day.

      I hear you on that! I’m just glad I noticed the damage to the filter before there was damage to the engine. That filter was messed up.

      @@TheProjectCave I have never trusted any place to do my oil changes. I'd end up dirty anyway just checking their work.
      Cheaper & peace of mind to do it yourself. Even when you don't feel like getting started it always feels good knowing it's done right.

      Checked out your channel! You doing your own oil is a no brainer with all the stuff you do! Thank you for the sub! I just returned the favor! Like the Nissan and the F150! I had a Frontier right before I got my F150! Keep up the videos!

    i loosen the filter a tad..then poke a lil hole on bottom to drain it first....then unscrew it off....less mess just pulling it off

    I just don’t see why Ford uses a plastic oil pan. The filter is difficult to get to. I guess I’m just used to BMWs that have been really easy to work on.

      I think that is just the turbo engines. The 5.0 engine appears to have a metal oil pan. At least that is what my magnetic parts tray indicates. For me, the truck is pretty easy to work on. Can access everything without lifting it. The filter isn’t too bad. Can reach it from under the front bumper. Never worked on a BMW. Might have to get one if they are that easy. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    Good video man I just wanted to know how many quarts does it take ? My truck has 55000 miles on it.

    • @TheProjectCave

      Thanks for the comment. The amount of oil depends on the size of your engine. If you a quick search for your year, make, model, and owner's manual, you should find a result or two from the manufacturer. Or the owner's manual in your glove box should have the information as well. My truck is at about 75,000 miles. It's been treating me well.

    Hi! I have a 2014 f150xtr. Now I have 113000km never had a problem. Today I noticed an oil mark on my driveway about a 5inch patch. Any idea? Big issue or small? I guess I better go underneath tomorrow and see if I can spot the issue

      I think you are on the right track by getting under your truck and checking to see if you can tell where the leak is. The last time I noticed anything like that was the oil filter I mentioned in the video. I used to take it to one of those quick lube places. Never again. I hope it is something simple. I'll have to keep an eye on my truck as well. After conversion, I'm just a few hundred miles behind you. Thanks for watching!

    Last time I changed my oil at 3,000 miles and my F150 said I was at 66%. As far as I’m concerned 3,000 miles is 1%.

    Is the engine a 5.0L, ??? 2.7 ecoboost is really harder and different.

    • @TheProjectCave
      @TheProjectCave  4 роки тому +1

      Mine is the 5.0. That 2.7 does look like a pain. But after what the quick change shop did to the filter on my oil change, I can only imagine what they would have done with a more difficult oil change. Like the pic of your ride! Thanks for watching!

    Hello. Great video. I got the same truck with a standard 3.5 v6 ..44k miles.. what about when to do the ATF.. ? Thanks

    • @TheProjectCave
      @TheProjectCave  3 роки тому

      Thank you for watching. As for the ATF, I'm going to do in during late spring/early summer 2021. I think the interval is 100k miles (check your manual), but there is no way I'm waiting that long. Same reason I don't go the full 10k miles on my synthetic oil. Maybe it is overkill, but I think it is better to spend a few dollars a little earlier and have the piece of mind. How do you like the turbos? I was torn between them and the V8. Went with the V8.
