I wanted to accentuate the cracks in this wood so I got a bag of powdered copper and I’ve got to say the powdered metal is so much nicer than using metal shavings. You can fill all of the cracks up nicely without any voids.

Beautiful results. I must admit, I had my doubts when I saw all of those cracks.
Thanks James, A lot of them were in the area of a knot, the only one I was worried about was the long one that nearly went to the rim but it seemed to do ok!

Robert I was very surprised when you put it on the lathe to true up it wasn't to bad it looked worse when you showed it to us. Also that was some great technique on the bottom of the bowl, the colours in the bowl really showed up when lacquered. All in all Robert a great job. I actually burst out laughing when Harry said about the drugs.

@@HodgePodgeWoodWorks I got some shavings from a place that cuts keys. Mostly brass I’d guess. Haven’t tried it yet but it should make interesting inlay.

BTW...it was a good thing the bowl was in the way...don't think I wanna see a beaver messing around with a wood-chuck...😨

Beautiful job on the bowl.

One of these days i might get back into it. With lockdown being over too many extracurricular activities for family going on now.
I use brass shavings in my cracks. I mix them in 2 part epoxy to make an emulsion and trowel it in.
Hmm....I suppose that could of worked as well. I've seen some people mix epoxy with various mica powders and fill cracks.
Where do you get all these ideas from? Your work is so good.
Well I watch quite a few woodturners and follow them on Instagram so there's ideas all over the place!
Okay I'm an idiot. How did you expand the chuck jaws to fit the shoulder cut on the inside of the beautiful bowl?

Haha, well I was wondering that to at first. Luckily the Nova chuck allen key has a ball head on the end of it so I managed to tighten it at an angle. Not really sure how I got it tight enough but it held on! I figured I could of also pulled out a regular L shaped allen wrench and tightened it that way if I had to.
Have you used a round or half round scraper or negative rake scraper ? Have you ever used a blend of linseed oil , wax and turpentine , or danish oil , tung oil ?
Gary, I had a large round scraper that I've converted to a negative rake scraper. I want to grind it to that sort of butter knife shape but I need to get a courser grit CBN to speed things up....or put on my old stone wheel? I've never tried that blend of finishes before but I think I've got them all besides turpentine. I need to do some more experimenting with finishes one of these days.

I love gum wood . I was thinking resin for the cracks but I like the copper better. Also could you tell me whose handle your using I like the fact that it has a collet to hold the shaft not set screws
John, the modular handles I've got are were made by Stuart Batty. They have currently stopped making them at the moment but he's supposed to be opening up a shop to start producing them sometime in the near future. In the mean time Ashley Harwood does make a similar style handle system.
Very nice, how many coats of the spray lacquer did it take to get such a nice finish? And how long do you have to wait between coats please?
Andy, I probably ended up doing about 7 or 8 light coats. The time between coats really depended on the weather. At times it was pretty cold and seemed to take a bit longer to dry. On a normal day, I could probably wait 20 minutes or so between coats.
Who is your supplier for the powered copper?
I picked it up from tuckersturnings.com/. Seemed to be the cheapest I found but had to pay for shipping :(
