Cleaning a Bathtub Drain with a lift-and-turn stopper

  • If your bathtub drain is slowing down, it just might be a clump of hair caught on the tub's lift-and-turn stopper. Cleaning the drain regularly may help avoid a truly clogged drain. It isn't hard to do once you know how.
Be sure to read through the comments, there are many versions of this stopper and others have described how to remove their variation. I try to like comments that offer helpful tips.

My family and I have been wrestling with a bad drain for a year and a half now. Drain cleaner only prevented the clog from stopping it completely up but it would still have drain issues. Now, I find a simple, concise, four minute video that fixed the drain 100% for the first time since we moved into our house. Thank you sir; I shall write songs about you.

Thanks Luis. Five years into the future and you helped a guy unclog his bathtub drain....awsome.
It turns out that a big piece of plastic got stuck in mine. Works perfect now.

Thank you for posting this! I'm a long-haired woman who has wasted so much money on Drano in the last three years to to no real effect. Just about ready to call a plumber when I decided to check UA-cam. Took me literally three minutes to get it flowing- I had a razor plastic cap stuck with a ton of hair wrapped around it.
    Thanks again!

YOU are my new best friend! I've been trying to figure this drain plug out for 2.5 years. The apartment complex maintenance man said all you do is untwist it and pull it up... leaving out the important detail of using a screwdriver! Very helpful!!!

Thank you so much for this video. I am 66 years old and this was my first attempt to unclog my tub. I had a problem trying to locate a video for my kind of stopper and ran across this. My stopper did not have a screw in the top so I got very frustrated but when I realized I could unscrew the little round thing in the center it came out just fine. I went from phillips head to regular screw driver and neither one worked so I tried turning the round piece in the center and it came out. I could not believe all that junk I got out and thanks to this video I saved a ton on money on a plumper and my tub is flowing again. Thanks you did a great job and thanks for sharing this.

My mom and I just recently tried this with your video and it worked. Thank you so much. You know, you can make some money having videos like this. This is impressive. It's to the point where if I don't know how to do something, all I would have to do is look it up online and pull up a video. This saves my mom and I a lot of money with generous people like you. Thank you for taking the time out of your day to make videos like this. Us penny pinchers are very grateful for stuff like this.

A friend of mine tried to remove the stopper in my upstairs bathtub for me while I was out of town, he was unsuccessful. (he always did tell me he wasn't handy around the house). I did a search and found your video and knew exactly what I needed to do and like all good single ladies should, I had the right tools and had the stopper off and the yucky hair removed in no time at all. Now its time to call my friend and gloat! Thank You!

I turned to the internet when I found myself faced with the question of "I want to clean out my drain but this whatchumajiggit is in the way and its got a cap that comes off of the thingamabob but once i remove it i still can't get the dammitz off." Even if it was ruined immediately afterward when I discovered 87lbs of the previous tenants hair and a razor cartridge down there.

After searching for a year and having a clogged shower drain, I now am clog-free. Thank you Vibrant Journey man! My drain assembly did not have a "screwdriver" slot on the center shaft thingy which confused me as to how to remove it; just took a pliers and unscrewed it and once removed there was a one-inch thick mat of solidified hair blocking the drain. Thanks!

Super helpful video! Thanks for sharing. My boyfriend and I just moved in to an apartment and we noticed the tub drained slowly. The maintenance crew was booked for a few weeks so I decided to take it on myself. Those dang drain stoppers had us confused so I took to the internet and found this video. I thought it looked doable and didn't think your drain looked too nasty but when I took ours out it was disgusting! There was aquarium gravel and shaving razor caps entangled in the hair! And there was so much of it! Gross! Whoever lived here before must have never cleaned it. Now our drain runs fine and we can shower without the puddles! Thanks again for sharing!

    • @LuisMenchu

I've thought it might be fun and disturbing to have people post pictures of their gross collection of gunk. Reports include pretty varied items. I'll admit I didn't really show much in the video but ours is usually just hair and soapy masses. I'm glad the video helped you out and got it done faster than waiting for the apartment crew.
