As an alt-righter, you did a great job on analyzing this trend. In reference to statism and government power and such, it's not that the alt-right doesn't care about this or that is okay with government power. The point we often discuss is that the demographics of a nation have a much greater impact than the ideology or system of a nation and this should be more emphasized. Usually what is emphasized or discussed by the public is economic systems and political philosophies, and this has a much lesser impact on the success of a nation, and even on the success of cities or areas within a nation, than its demographics.
+Jeb Rothberg Succinct post. To expound upon what you said: I would go as far as to say many (if not most) alt-righters, myself included, sympathize with libertarian philosophy (in the mould of Rothbard, Paul Sr., Hermann-Hoppe - not Jeffery Tucker-types). That being said; treating demography as a secondary issue when the traditional base of libertarianism (Europeans) is being replaced through immigration will inevitably be interpreted as a deterrent by many who would otherwise be sympathetic to libetarianism. I do not support medicaid/medicare, welfare entitlements, income taxes, etc - but preventing Brazilification in the United States takes precedence over ideology. I think this is the fundamental split between alt-righters and "economics/market-first" libertarians. Lew Rockwell and the late Murray Rothbard support(ed) right-wing populists, because in theory, they will shift the Overton window towards liberty. Both have encouraged other libertarians to do the same.
+Osmond Percy No it may be foundational to our view of a perfect society. The point is that it may not be the best move in the short run while other forces use it to crush us.
+Jeb Rothberg - Alt-right is in favor of robbing people of liberties based on their inclusion in various groups. Of course, this ignores the fact that there are people who can deviate very fucking far from the average traits of whatever group they supposedly belong to. To the alt-right the exception does not matter, only the average matters. They believe that the individual is worth sacrificing for (what they see as) the benefit of the collective of average people. The exceptional individual has no rights, no control over his own property, and is subject to the tyranny of various racial collectives under the system they are proposing. Ayn Rand makes it simple: "A genius is a genius, regardless of the number of morons who belong to the same race - and a moron is a moron, regardless of the number of geniuses who share his racial origin." An IQ hierarchy that was race-blind (i.e. your individual IQ score (not your group's IQ score) determined your rank), would be equally tyrannical but perhaps less hypocritical. The reason they reject this is because they aren't truly about elitism/excellence, they are simply tribalists who wish to justify advancing one race at the expense of others, no different from the anti-libertarians who support affirmative action. tl;dr - Alt-Right (being white is more important than individual merit) has more in common with affirmative action (being black is more important than individual merit) than with libertarianism (your merit as an individual trumps everything else).
Osmond Percy - "end of affirmative action, total freedom of association, almost complete end to non white immigration (much like it was pre- 1965) and finally the phasing out of dysgenic aspects of the welfare state." If that is all they were advocating I would be sending them donations, because I support all of those positions. It is not the bad policies that they hate, it is the non-whites themselves that they hate. They are in fact arguing for war against every group other than themselves.
Osmond Percy - Why do you assume I oppose European culture? I occasionally donate to symphony orchestras (which is 100% white members in my city, by the way). I think people should should use their money to support their preferred form/s of art. Want Joshua Bell (classical violinist) to release more albums? Go out in the free market and buy his albums! You are right that taxes take from you and give to undeserving people, and thus take away your ability to afford to create and surround yourself with the kind of culture you want. So get angry at the IRS! Get angry at the congressmen who refuse to repeal the taxes! Don't get angry at random non-white strangers who are going about their business (unless they are in the act of committing a crime in which case, throw their ass in jail).
Fantastic video Jeff Deist. I'm not quite a hard alt right, but I'd consider myself a center-right with pretty well-defined alternative-right sympathies. I think we libertarians have much to learn from the alt-right and revolutionary left in terms of tactics and strategy, while ultimately remaining a libertarian movement. In short, we need a libertarian popular revolutionary movement, much like the revolution of our forefathers in 1776.
Demography seems to be the number 1 issue jeopardizing the future possibility of liberty; it, and his anti-establishmentarianism, is why I'm inclined to see Trump as the best outcome out of the two parties. Thoughts? Better arguments for Cruz? My main problem with him is he's a career politician, a hard-line Zionist, and has folded on immigration before.
the alt-right is the perfect answer on the sjw/libtard movement. don't argue. just bully. and this has become a war not of the better arguments but the better disses/rants/memes. and the alt-right is winning.
Reason is overrated. Talk crap about Daily Stormer all you want, but at least it has the courage to discuss the issues that are actually effecting politics in the US, however I personally prefer Radix and TRS myself. The political discourse in the US is so far beyond things like tax rates it isn't even funny. Libertarianism is all hat and no cattle, just look at your goofy presidential candidate.
@Chill Will that statement, showed your lack of depth and understanding of the REAL WORLD. What's next, it was the liberals in the CIA that created al-Qaeda?
Thank you Jeff Deist. That was one of the best speeches I've heard in years about our present condition. A true tour de force. Your cautious optimism gives me some future hope, especially if it's not based on an educated populace (which we certainly don't have!).
Jeff Deist, is awesome. He has a great way of seeing and expressing the very essence of an issue. I really wish to go to this event one year, but that is when the Libertarian Party of Bexar County has it's annual fundraising dinner. So ist das Leben!
Although Russell Kirk said that there could never be a union between old conservatives and libertarians, I disagree. I think there is a meeting ground for both of these two groups dedicated to preserving real liberty to come together...and this needs to happen in order to save our republic from the fanatics on the left and right.
Exactly right. Libertarians need to start fanning the flames on both extremes. We need to see more right leaners pulling out guns in protests. We need to see more left leaners promising to nationalize industry and bankrupt every decent hard-working person. We need to teeter on the edge of race war over the PC debate. It has to be faced that this country will never come together over libertarian principles. The only hope we have is to sunder this nation and collect a piece for ourselves in the chaos.

I'm a college educated Democrat. I'm a vet. I' pay income taxes even though I'm retired. I own stocks. I own rental property. I own a house twice the median for my city. And yet I'm called a communist because I vote for Democrats mostly. I pay more in property tax than 80% of the others in my town. I have no arrest record. I've been audited by the IRS three times, and twice dismissed and the other time the IRS wound up owing me even more than I claimed. Yet, I listen to videos telling me I'm a law breaking communist. I do come to these videos. But I never listen to a talking head telling me how to think. Instead of listening to someone telling me evil people are out to get me, I read investment textbooks before buying stocks. Before buying investment real estate, I didn't listen to any talking head left or right. Instead I took a course and studied real estate books and got a real estate license to save commission costs. Yet, I read post after post how people like me are law breaking communist. What did I do wrong in studying real info instead of listening to the left or right talking heads? I did work with a Republican Senator who was pushing a Banking law I supported. I even gave him some money to help in his fight.
as libertarians we focus alot on forgein policy the leviathan state and monetary system etc central banking fed reserve as our topics. I liked how Jeff talk about the social issues and would like the institute to have a lecture of the break down of the family and how it to contributes to our national debt. a possible idea example how the family would teach the value of saving for a raining day living within your means things that my parents s and grandparents have taught and for which I have been passing down to my children.
I no longer have faith in government. I don't understand how elected and non-elected people can force their will upon anyone and it's tolerated; thus acceptable! I remember reading Larkin Rose's book on government being, "The Most Dangerous Superstition" and I found myself in agreement with his message. I'm seeking a mutual relationship with people that's voluntary and independent. I no longer wish to be told- what, when, why, where and how. I just want to be left alone. Seriously, what does this make me?
+D Bruce MMT are Keynesians with capital theory who think productivity growth is equal to the velocity of money. They do that to justify government spending of any kind. Many of them are borderline Marxists.

Libertarian-ism is not populist. It's intellectual. It will never connect to populists. It inherently appeals to the business community as well as intellectuals. That's where it was 300-400 years ago and that's the only place it will thrive today.
Jeff, not long ago you gave a presentation on the evil of PC. Why then do you not have the courage to call homosexuals, homosexuals instead of gays. What's gay about homosexuality?
Ed Waggoner Sr. I think homosexual behavior is someone else's behavior and someone else's behavior is none of my business. PC culture is a culture of fruitless condemnation; which you have exemplified perfectly in this comment section.

+Caleb Steele I should clarify that I use "center right" to describe cultural and social preferences and views of the world.
+Caleb Steele that's what I'm speaking of: paleolibertarianism.
+Caleb Steele
Libertarianism is a centrist ideology; it is socially liberal in a lot of issues and economically conservative.
+Anand Venigalla
we have nothing to learn from the Alt-Right, they are racists and they want to see nothing but you kicked out of this country Anand.
a small government won't work when there is countries that send spies and other shit to help destabilize your nation.

romzen, what are we in, 3rd grade?
@Chill Will made in through a couple graduate programs, both in the States and overseas. Have your culture war when the State ends.
@Chill Will correct, my time working in the Middle East gave me that.
@Chill Will that statement, showed your lack of depth and understanding of the REAL WORLD. What's next, it was the liberals in the CIA that created al-Qaeda?
I was waiting for this video to come out. Thank you very much, Mr. Deist.

Such a great speech. I always enjoy listening to Jeff Deist.
This guy gets it. Feigning ignorance on matters of identity is no longer a valid strategy.
Kennedy on Fox needs to run as an independent . She would be the trojan horse and be a great populist libertarian candidate.
The most important point of the alt-right that needs to be mentioned is that it is a more identitarian and pan-European movement.
Although Russell Kirk said that there could never be a union between old conservatives and libertarians, I disagree. I think there is a meeting ground for both of these two groups dedicated to preserving real liberty to come together...and this needs to happen in order to save our republic from the fanatics on the left and right.

a good analysis, especially the underlying criticisms from a libertarian side
its all economical in the end. 08's ghost scares the skeptical.
Not sure where he got the idea that all libertarians care about is economics........Ron Paul talks about a lot more than just economics.
