This was my Mom's favorite song, she had it on a 45 record. She used to play it on Saturdays when we were cleaning the house. Sometimes she would listen to it over and over. This song describes my Mom's life. Especially when it came out in 1975. She was always in such turmoil. My father did not make her life easy. Mom passed away in August of 2023. This song still haunts me when I hear it. 😔♥♥♥
In January of 1975, my dear Father took a train from Ft. Lauderdale to Gainesville in Florida just to visit me. I was in graduate school at the University of Florida. On a very cold night I was invited to a party after the Art Opening of a great friend and mentor of mine twenty years my senior. A roaring fire leant two kinds of warmth to an atmosphere of caring folks. This song was on repeat, adding another perfect layer to this feeling of affection that embraced us all. My Father would pass away eighteen years later, but he often spoke of that evening. He was a very sentimental man. His wife of 24 years, my mother, had died of breast cancer at age 43 in 1969. Although he never spoke about it, I am certain it brought memories of her to him. She too was a beautiful vocalist, one that Big Bands that came through the WWII industrial town of Bridgeport, Connecticut where they and I were born, were so impressed, some tried to lure her to come on tour with them. But she had met my Dad by that time, and turned down those chances to raise five children. I know he along with me was very happy he made that trip.
My adult children and a niece know all this great music! Played it all the time in the background , instead of television. Every now and again my niece will surprise me with a song as her mom and I never played the same music!
The Meaning of This Song (backstory) - This is a song based on a musical "A Little Night Music" by Stephen Sondheim. In the musical, the woman Desiree Armfeldt is having an affair with a married man Fredrik. But he doesn't want to continue the relationship and instead wants to be committed to his young wife Anne. Feeling rejected and heartbroken, Desiree sings "Send in the Clowns" which is what they would do in the circus in the old days to distract the audience from a failed performance (i.e., some tragedy happened like someone on the trapeze fell, or a lion attacked a handler, etc). And so she sings "Send in the Clowns" to distract her from the tragedy that is her life.
A typical 1970s Masterpiece.....loved this as a nine year old in 1975....i am nearly 58 now.....and this brings a tear to my eye......so proud of being a 70s child........
I was assaigned in Germany from 1973 through 1976 when I first heard this beautiful piece of music, and still love it today. I listen just for the memories.
I first saw and heard Judy around 1963 when I was 14 years-old. She and Tom Paxton I think it was, were making their rounds on Cape Cod, (and Massachusetts) at that time. They put on a nice little show at the old National Guard Armory, (which is now a court house) on Jones Road in Falmouth, Ma. Judy was absolutely fabulous that night! I can still see her on that little stage wearing a white dress and high heels. She had the most beautiful, big blue eyes I have ever witnessed. I've been a huge fan of hers all these years and my favorite song sung by her is, "Both Sides Now".
Beautifully said, yes I completely agree with you . Strange thing is though the “ something beautiful “ for me almost always happens to something of the emotional value. Like doing a kind gesture but no one notices. Either way, a beautiful song . Thanks for sharing your thoughts on it .
This is one of those songs that inspired absolutely no mediocre feelings about : one either absolutely despised it, . . . or one absolutely cherished it ! My first partner was among the former group. Count me in the latter.
The death of Sondheim brought me here. It's a deeply beautiful arrangement and vocal. I know it was for the Muppets (my deep love) - but I wish that they had used the clowns differently. It could have been very beautiful if they had used the clowns more delicately - blurred perhaps and certainly slower.
Toss up for sure. But I'll say Frank, well because it's Frank!!, arguably the greatest singer/entertainer of the 20th century!!❤ Both are breathtakingly beautiful..and Judy sounds like what angels would sound like singing!
This particular clip, though you’d never know it by seeing it like this, is taken from Judy Collins’ wonderful guest appearance on the original late 70’s The Muppet Show. So those clowns are technically Muppets! An odd design choice but somehow it just...works.
Usually I am quick to be able to understand the Lyrics of Most songs ! But this one ; as much as I Like the tune I try and try to understand its meanings Is there someone That can put me in the picture ??
The man she is singing to, was always pursuing her professing his love, but she was never interested, when she finally realizes she loves him she goes to tell him, but now he has found someone else and she realizes it's too late- she missed her chance for someone that truly loved her
It's referencing the idea of how, in the circus, when someone dies or a huge accident happens (trapeze artist falls and breaks their leg, for example), they send in the clowns to distract the audience while they clean up
I believe the interpretation of this song is rather distorted. Does the song really mean, "clowns" as such? It's a metaphor and this version showing clowns is very literal in its meaning. In fact, it cheapened the song. I'm sure the author or lyricist and composer are giggling, if not smirking, for the rather literal interpretation. Just saying.
@@rodneyfrost1674 Wow, you people are really pathetic. With all due respect, it is not just a matter of your aesthetic predilections. We each of course have our own and it varies from person to person. Rather it is quite concerning with regards to understanding what you are looking at and your interpretative capacity. It is actually quite perfect, that is complimentary. It has to do with ineffably deep and voiceless hurt, sarcasm and parody.

Such a shame that only 1000 you tube folk have had the benefit of listening to this awesome classical piece of music and theatre - truly wonderful
This is hardly the only venue that presented this beautiful song. Keep the faith!
Do you know how UA-cam works?

Lovely, sad, resolution in song. Her voice is a good medicine for the heart.
The best presentation of the song of all the others. Miss Collins "aced" it.
Masterpiece song Judy is now age 85.

Whenever I hear this song, I think of something beautiful, but unappreciated.
Unappreciated? This is Collin’s most ever purchased song

Awesome
You've got to understand imagery and symbolism to better appreciate this incredibly beautiful song.
When I realized where the title phrase originated it physically hurt.
Listen to Send in the Clowns and think of Robin Williams. You will get it .
that girl can sing even at 83 years old
I think she sings it even better now!

If she can sing that beautifully at 83 she must an angel.

Sad song 😢
According to the NY Gov, this is us Trumper's theme song! And we're PROUD of it, thank you!
Though this should be BIDEN'S theme!!
This song seems to be about broken love. Or you arrived and it wasn't there.
This is from the muppet show… that’s why there’s those weird clowns in the background
Belíssima interpretação 👏👏👏
Genius
A Sad Song especially that Saigon fell that Year 1975
This is The Muppet Show version of this song, in case anyone wanted to know!!
It's not the Muppet show version, she just happened to sing it on the show, don't demean a beautiful song
I feel the same way I lost my mom to
Anybody know if this video is available without the clowns?
Nope ya gotta take the clowns it’s “as is” sorry

Yep, remember watching it
Its the UK government. LOL!
A commentary on our coming election.
I must be stupid doint understand the record
There is a song!
Bit literal with the clowns in video: Don't bother they're here: (meaning we are the fools)
There everywhere 😂😂
Gaak!

Having those clowns in the background was a terrible idea - annoyingly distracting.
Yes the song is actually not even about clowns, So serious and poignant.
