We just saw "Norma" yesterday with Angela Meade and Jamie Burton. Their voices blended beautifully and the audience loved them. A wonderful performance!!
Absolutely!!! What a shame that she does not have a truly great Norma to sing with her. Meade is a good soprano with some bel canto technique but Barton is the real thing.
There is only one one pairing that sits at the top of all the great pairings, and that's Sutherland and Horne.I certainly can admire these two and enjoy their rendition, but all I can hear in my mind is how they compare. Fair or not, that's the reality of it.
Yes, Meade sounds much more self-confident now than at the time of her Met debut. I did hear her Norma in 2012 (Washington Opera), and she was wonderful.
+Detectivefiction I saw her Norma in 2012 in DC, but it was the last performance of a long run, and a matinee. Still beautiful, but some signs of fatigue. What amazed me in that performance was Dolora Zajick matching her completely in terms of dynamics, phrasing, and beauty of tone.
The first Adalgisa later became a renowned Norma herself. One wonders if Barton could manage the same feat. She is clearly a greater mistress of bel canto than Meade who pushes herself into repertoire for which neither her vocal timbre nor her technique is adequate.

I've always been a Joan and Jackie diehard for the Druid Duo (yes, tired old opera queen from Australia here) but Barton is astonishingly good.
