I totally agree with you. I think the companionship and friendship they have with each other is really cool, even if they end up competing in the races. One thing is the race itself and the other is the training, where everyone is there for the same goal. And I also believe that there is no reason not to be something fun, light and joyful. I believe he has to enjoy it, dance, laugh and make his friends laugh too, after all they are human and not mere PB delivering machines.
I think you having a good time and being the character that he is, is the reason he can keep delivering the National Records he does! For him he genuinely loves it and he's so excited to be back training with his friends. I think if he wasn't fooling around with a shoe to his head or teasing Tadesse he'd probably have burnt out by now. Being able to have fun and switch off between marathon training blocks is also something I think we often overlook. From the sound of it, his off time is very off!!

Sometimes we forget that professionals have the same emotions that we do including homesickness. Wanting to just spend time with one's family is very logical. Also, crazy how they all say that they listen to their body... I still am not that tuned to my body and overly on my smartwatch and all these gadgets...
