You are a BEAST for uploading this...Thank you so much! One of my favorite video game soundtracks ever, and I never even played Castlevania III (don't tell anyone).
Man, Akumajõ Densetsu (Castlevania III) has a stellar soundtrack. I was fortunate to find an English translation so I can enjoy the dialogue but still listen to the Japanese version’s music. Thank you for offering a download! I burnt it to a disc for my personal enjoyment, as I want to listen to it on the go. At least without leaving the UA-cam app open to play it. I actually think what you did added some depth to an already rich sound!
I always wanted to fancy this up myself, but why bother when it's already been done so awesomely? Fantastic, sir, and thank you for using the FC music and not the NES... first time I heard this in an emulator, my jaw dropped.
I just finished this game today (the Japanese version of it), and I really loved the soundtrack to death. I though you only uploaded the US version, but I am so glad I was wrong. Oh, I can just kiss you for uploading this ;w;
I was wrong. In this "stereo style" The two extra channels DO sound better, (Particularly the bass channel) rather than sounding like speaker noise. Great Job! I will definitely be sharing this among my CV Circle.
I actually own the physical Dracula's Best CD, I found it on eBay as a kid and begged for it as a Christmas gift... so even though I never got to PLAY this version, I definitely grew up listening to it over and over and over. Some extreme nostalgia for these tunes.
Castlevania has always been a favorite of mine. It's also an oddity where the game was easier in Japan than here. The first Castlevania game had a beginner mode. 4th grade me would have killed for a beginner mode!
That song at 1:54 is so good. If the NES used the VRC6 chip for every soundtrack, that would be so awesome, BTW just a question, is it possible to do stereo soundtracks for other platforms other than NES or FC? I'm just curious.
I've played aku 3 on the American nes and the sound doesn't work right only on the famicom.it does u should try and ee what I'm talking about the Japanese copies sound bad on an American nes
Thank you for showcasing the superior Famicom version's OST just in time for Halloween! Konami's staff were and still are amazing and were always on the frontier of bringing the highest quality visual and audio experiences on all consoles they develop for. They ALWAYS pushed the limits with great results every time!! Curse you Nintendo America for screwing us out of the extended audio pin connection access on the NES!! It still makes me a tad peeved when I think about it... LOL
Mr. Egg Well, Konami has the idea of making a character that is distinguished among fiction. And jet chose Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Conan the Barbarian look, and bam! Simon, Christopher, and Trevor’s character look-a-like. 👀
Freaky! This is the version of Castlevania 3 that I played when I was a kid (still have the cart) but I never noticed just how jazzed up the music was. Must have been my crappy TV speakers.
Just for the first time completed the game with Grant. It made the endeavor surprisingly easy. I equipped him with the throwing axe (x3). That weapon has a pretty limited use but it's absolutely awesome in some fights. In the past games I've always partnered with Sypha or Alucard because they were cooler. Grant is the best choice after all-- great for skipping some messed up areas as well. Oh, and the soundtrack? Can't get enough of it.
CV3 version soundtrack will always be my favorite, in part because the simplified instrumentation resulted in a more urgent, plaintive sound that for many tracks creates an intensity the more sophisticated Akumajou Densetsu orchestration sometimes lacks. However, the Akumajou version is still an incredible masterpiece. Box art tho...
I'm very happy you've posted the Famicom version of the soundtrack for Castlevania III, as I prefer the way it sounds versus the NES's sound chip. I love the Famicom version of the track Beginning at 1:54 as it has that extra oomph to it that is missing in the NES version, especially the beginning part.
Agreed. As Retronauts put it in a recent episode on Castlevania 3's music, the soundtrack sounds like your classic chiptune on the NES, but the Famicom was mixing channels to try creating specific instruments like the harpsichord in some spots. In terms of technical execution, the Famicom is vastly superior. However, I grew up with Castlevania 3 being one of my favorite games that I went back to regularly, so nostalgia wins in my book. For example, I like "Dead Beat" and "Rising" on the NES much more than the Famicom.
Good news, everyone! Grad1u5(2,3) has started uploading his old videos to alternate accounts that weren't taken down in the plunge. So go check those out when you get the chance.
Triangle drums are a created by playing a tone on the triangle channel and rapidly decreasing its pitch. explod2A03 has an excellent video that explains the triangle drum.
Hmm. Yeah, that's basically the conclusion I came to as well: Use triangle for low- to mid-frequency thumping sounds and such. I was having trouble making percussion tracks with just noise and no DPCM, and I was tired of trying to make triangle work in melodic/harmonic roles.
@@kingeddy7966 Yeah but the good old CN is long dead, now there's only sh*t cartoons there And i think that's what EmoPoodle meant with Konami dying, even thought they didn't die yet en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Konami yeah they're still alive Update D*mn i learned that Konami no longer make games, so no remake of Akumajou Densetsu on modern consoles?
I like the sound of the triangle wave myself more than the sawtooth. In fact, listening to this on max volume and it sounds really messy and not-clear unlike the stock 2A03. Additionally, I believe the stock 5 channels are enough for a composer who knows what he's doing, and expanded audio just makes the video of the game look even more primitive by comparison. However, extra sound channels would be useful for sound effects and the like.
The triangle can work if you put some elbow grease into it. While rare, there are some games that use a Square+Triangle lead, such as Boy and his Blob, or some people like Hubbard use the triangle as a leading channel and use a square as a bass. I don't think Japanese composers did much with leading triangles, much less triangle harmonies. It might be pretty underwhelming, but it sure was quite a versatile tool. I'm impressed with how loud Baldwin's basslines are, considering the triangle.
Excuse me. Did I claim to be an expert on NES audio? I merely mentioned that I've worked with it enough to identify what works and what sounds good based on my musical sense. I mostly do "demakes of VGM; I can send you a .nsf and maybe you can judge what my opinion is worth from that? I don't object to the timbre of the triangle so much as I despise the lack of control over it. You have to mess with the DPCM counter to get it soft enough for mellow passages, and even then it sticks out.
Actually, there is the Kirby Ultra Super Deluxe CD, but it's more of a "greatest hits" than a full OST release of the Kirby Super Star Ultra (which would probably take up 3 CDS); but on the bright side, the tracks sound like 8BitStereo tracks!
Well the reason they did succeed back then was because of the freedom they gave developers. That was what made them awsome. It's just that as they continued to take more control over projects is the reason they're stuck with only 157 mil in the bank at the moment.
Roberto Rivera I actually did that. Its very good and fun. Only problem is when the song runs out. XD. Play with the threaded cane, put on fire paper, and go kill some vilebloods of cainhurst as only a belmont can.
It's funny you mention that. Ever since Capcom went down the shitter, I started thinking. The 10 million versions of SF 2, Capcom fucking over the original visions of not just Keji inafune with the Megaman X series, but also Shinji mikami with the Resident evil series (Was suppoest to end at 3 originally), Ghouls & ghost's very structure of repearting the gane twice, the list goes on. Capcom was always a crooked & manipulative company, it's just that back then developers had more power.
while Bloody Tears is probably the greatest piece of Castlevania music ever written (though shoutout goes to the Waterfalls of Agartha from Lords of Shadow, believe it or not) Castlevania 3 probably had the overall most impressive soundtrack.
While the Famicom version sounds fantastic, it just sounds WAY too convoluted with 4 square waves, one triangle (which is absent apparently) and one sawtooth. I'd agree with just the addition of the Sawtooth, which is a versatile instrument, but 2 more squares are kinda overkill.
so i heard that most japaneese versions of nes games have a chip in there cartriges that allow improved sound "mostly the konami games with there vrc7 and vrc6 chips" is this true?

this sounds much better!
From 27:47 onwards, I am VERY familiar with this soundtrack.
The beginning of Prelude sounds very similar to something Konami used for Metal Gear 2 for the MSX, which also has a phenomenal soundtrack.
Dat VRC6! I gotta get an AV Famicom, the Japanese version is definitely the definitive version of this game.
Now all you need is Esper Dream II to complete this VRC6 awesomeness.
