It's hard for younger people to realize how revolutionary the lyrics to "You Don't Own Me" were in 1965. Women speaking for themselves just wasn't done back then...at least not in white pop music. You might have heard that type of thing from Aretha, or "Big Momma" Thornton before her, but you never would have heard it on white radio. That was an absolutely revolutionary song. Oh, and about songs from the 1960's being so short, that was pretty much because radio would not play anything over three minutes until the late '60's when the AOR (Album-Oriented Rock) radio format came into being. John Lennon famously said that his philosophy on songwriting was "2 minutes and out" The reason that 3:00 minutes and shorter were the standard was because the old 10-inch 78 RPM records that were the standard between 1911 and the early 1950's could only fit 3 minutes per side. 45 RPM records (introduced in 1949) could fit 4.5 minutes a side, but it took years for people to start taking advantage of it.
A comparable song that also impacted me as a young person at the time was Society's Child by Janis Ian about black/white interracial relationships. She wrote it when she was 13 years old. Leslie Gore was 17 years old when she sang You Don't Own Me.
@@clairemcdaniel1253 Yeah, Leslie Gore went off to college (Sarah Lawrence) and the music business changed, so she was effectively washed up as a chart force by the time she was 21. Similarly, Mary Weiss of the Shangri-Las had a number of hits and 19 singles released starting when she was 15, and she was out of the business until her 2006 comeback album(40 years later!) by the age of 18. The business really chewed up and spit out young girl singers back then.
For her to sing this, with its message of not being under someone's thumb, was a huge and early message to girls and women everywhere. Great first step for women in history.
My late sister was almost 14 when that track was released. She once told me that song was revolutionary for it's time as most girl group songs up until that time had the girl worship their boy. Very rarely ever did a pop song by a young woman outwardly declare their independence.
First Wives Club with Bette Midler, Diane Keaton and Goldie Hawn (1996). They came together after a best friend committed suicide (Played by Stockard Channing) after her husband left her for a younger woman. They decided to help other first wives by dedicated an organization to their friend. At the end they sing the song because when they were teenagers it was their song.
It's a fantastic film isn't it April? I think the ending is epic. Gosh, 1996! I'm getting old as I was only 13 back in 1996 😣. Where does time go? Anyway, I love First Wives Club. Chris (UK).
@Gary Johnston You verbally attacking that statement, actually proves Claires point. And to have the arrogance to claim that it is not applicable to relationships today, further proves you must live under a rock. What are your point against women (or men for that matter) being equal in a relationship?
@Gary Johnston What anger you have there, need to get that out of your system mate, take up at hobby, maybe start yoga. And there are so many wannabe "alpha male" posing as tough guys here... you clearly are one of them. But it is rich coming from someone that don't have a real profile picture accusing someone else of being a fake profile. And in the end, no I am not anyone's PR officer, I unlike you are just someone who sees men and women as equal in relationships, and not frightened by women with a mind of their own (unlike you).
I grew up listening to Leslie Gore songs. She was ahead of her time. I was 15 yrs old when this came out. So many changes going on the 60's. It was quite a decade!
Leslie Gore: Beautiful, Amazing voice, Sadly passed away in 2015 at only 68 years old. Watch that song live. Another one she did was called "She's a Fool" She started out at only 16 with a number one hit "It's My Party", then "Judy's Turn To Cry" One of the greats of my time. Always wished she could have done a song with Elvis Presley. They would have been invincable.
This reminds me of my ex husband telling me that according to the bible, he owned me. I had to correct him and remind him that since he didnt believe in the bible, and thought it was a work of fiction, that whole thing of me obeying his word like it was the word of God, was null and void. Every time I hear this song that is what i thing of.
When men think they OWN Women...LOL ::Scoff/Eye Roll:: The women that allow men to "own" them (oftentimes radical religious folks that take the bible literally/verbatim...where women think they are to submit entirely to their men-gross, af!)...tragic, to say the least!
You should listen to a cover of this song by an artist named Grace (not Grace Potter) just Grace. There is a version without the rapper (ruins the song in my opinion). Look for live versions.
These days, the songs are so over produced. They've got autotune and things like that to make anyone sound 'good.' You don't even have to have any talent. It's more about image and sex appeal. I like emotional expression and good lyrics with some substance.
Lesley's first big #1 hit record was "Its My Party" produced by no other than Quincy Jones who both were signed to Mercury records at the time..Lesley and Quincy remained friends till her death from cancer..I remember seeing Quincy being interviewed and asked about Leslies recent passing..Tears flooded his eyes as he tried to describe how deeply her passing had affected him..PS The movie your thinking of is First Wives Club where the ladies close out the end of the movie singing this song...
You must probably heard this in the DC Movie "Suicide Squad" when Harley Quinn comes into the picture ... It was also redone by a singer named Grace. Now, Lesley Gore was the Princess of Rock and Roll in the 1960s. She started out at the age of 17 in 1963 (the year I was born! ) with "It's My Party". Quincy Jones was her producer and put her on the map. She had a follow up to "It's My Party" with "Judy's Turn To Cry" which I think is a better song, however it didn't reach number one as "It's My Party" did. This song "You Don't Own Me" was held from being number one on the charts by The Beatles. It only went up to number two on the charts. It was a revolutionary song for women, back then, and became an anthem. The year was 1964. Lesley Gore also was in the TV show "Batman" as Cat Woman's side kick - Pussy Cat. Unfortunately, Lesley Gore died at the age of 68, back in February 2015 from lung cancer. The hairstyle she is wearing was called The Flip and I don't know ANYONE who wore it better! :) .... NOW, to hear THE QUEEN of MUSIC, you MUST listen to CONNIE FRANCIS!!!!! ... BRENDA LEE is another!
I was 13 when this song came out and I have loved it since day one. As a young teen I felt this song to my bones. Girls back then were supposed to give in to what a Man said. Girls and women were just really beginning to speak up and becoming independent. This song really helped women to start speaking up for themselves. We were really wanting more freedom and independence.
I've long thought that as well, but an even more glaring example is "Bobby's Girl" - in that song, the singer says that people are saying "you're not a kid anymore" and ask her what she wants to be. Her answer is that the only thing that matters is for her to be "Bobby's girl" - nothing about a career, or real goals or achievements. Even as a little kid at the time, I thought this was stupid and childish.
Every song was about the same length as this one for decades. Originally there had been a technical reason for it, but even after Long Playing records were first sold in 1948, which could accommodate much longer tunes, everybody still stuck to the standard. It wasn't till The Doors did "Light My Fire" and the Chambers Brothers did "Time Has Come Today" in 1967 that longer songs started to get played on the radio, and it was considered a very big deal to hear these in their full length. AM stations only played the long versions at night, not during the day when numerous commercials had to be run constantly. After awhile, in about 1970, it became normal for longer songs to be recorded and played on FM radio.
And interestingly, "It's My Party" has the opposite message of "You Don't Own Me" - she realizes her boyfriend has taken up with her best friend, and she collapses into tears. That's an understandable reaction but isn't the same strong, independent attitude of the latter song.
love all the comments. If any of you remember 45's, they were the 7" vinyl records with the big center whole. In 1963 when Leslie Gore was a junior in high school she release It's My Party (and I'll cry if I want to). It went to #1 for four weeks and sold a million copies. The flip side of the record was You Don't Own Me. The following year 1964 it went to #2 for two weeks. Side note Quincy Jones was the producer.
That's something I tell people all the time, even though I'm married I don't own my wife. She is a person, she has goals and dreams like I do, I support her and she supports me. We are a partnership. Together we get through life's problems and joys. I have the best woman in the world and I am happy to let everyone know it.
Teen of the 80's here. I first heard this song in one of the biggest 80s movies, Dirty Dancing! I almost wore out that cassette! Especially that song. I was such a good girl would never have thought of going against my parents wishes so playing that song made me feel like a rebel! Lol
I love how the verse starts with a triplet on the up-beat. "You don't own . . ." A feminist anthem ahead of its time, it depicts the dating mores of the early '60s perfectly. After half a century we're still fighting over this.
Hi Ty. I'm gonna give you a quick bit of info. In the 1930's there was the first song written and sung about Wife Abuse. It was a huge hit, and sung by Fannie Brice, Bessie Smith and others. The name of the song is "My Man". TY, Don't try to do That Song here. You might not be strong enough, because your Empathy will pick you up and throw you down. Recently we went to a Pokey LaFarge concert at "Off Broadway" down on Broadway and Lemp. His opening act was Abbey Waterworth. One of the songs she sang was My Man. How ever many in the crowd were drunk by then, just got sobered up. I know she was just showing off her talent, but she SLOWED it down when came to the words "I know he beats me". It was written during the wild times between the 2 wars. I cried, because my dad beat my mom.

This song caused some arguments back in the day. Gals were starting to stand up for themselves in small ways and the guys weren't liking it too much. Kind of funny how this was sort of an "anthem" song. Good tune though that I enjoyed dancing and singing to.
Ty. Thank you for not interrupting the song to offer comments. Bless you for allowing the recording to play thru, because much, much work and thought has gone into these offerings of creativity and talent from many years ago. Much respect for that choice! :-)
It was the last song featured in The First Wives Club, and the closing credits. Where Diane Keaton, Goldie Hawn and Bette Midler flung open the doors ( read shaking the shackles off ) and dance down the street. Iconic part of the movie, speaks volumes and so did Leslie Gore back in 1965, believe me this was way out there for it’s time. Telling men we had a mind, we were not just the little woman at home, OR the glorified arm dressing for business functions. We have come a long way ladies.👍
Dude your channel is phenomenal. I watched one video and ended up spending 2.5 hours on your channel. Addictive as all get out!! *Elvis Presley - Trying To Get To You ('68 Comeback Special 50th Anniversary HD Remaster)"* Tremendous performance.
It was in The Woods with Agnes Bruckner. A horror movie about a girls school run by witches which is on tv and probably Netflix sometimes. Produced by the master Quincy Jones in 63. Also the RZA from Wu-Tang sampled it if I remember right.
It was covered br a great voice her name is grace there are 2 versions one with rap ft. G-eazy another without rap !! The song was played during suicide squad Harley Quinn scene
The movie you remember was called "The First Wives Club" and starred Goldie Hawn, Bette Midler and Diane Keaton in 1996. They dance and sing this song all wearing white outfits.
Wish that photo was in color. She had the bluest eyes going. She was one of the biggest hit makers during my junior and early high school years before the Beatles hit and changed everything.
This song really gets to me. I was in a 10 year abusive relationship, he told me what to wear, who to see, what music to listen to, how to speak, not allowed to be myself. He went through all my clothes throwing out things I wasn't allowed to wear. 10 years I put up with that. What a waste of my life. I kinda got my own back by playing The Eurythmics Thorn In My Side over and over. He still didn't realise the song was aimed at him.
This pre-feminist song told the story of female repression and helped to articulate what so many young girls needed to hear. It was also featured in a great movie with Goldie Hawn and Bette Midler and Diane Keaton. It is called First Wives Club. Great movie even greater messages. Thanks for featuring it!!
A song produced by the great Quincy Jones. A man of many talents indeed. This plaintive song of independence was one of the first of its kind in R & R. Great song.
I just learned that this song was written by a man that heard a girl and her boyfriend arguing a toss from his studio. She said every word in the song. It was verbatim to what she said. She was pissed. He heard it, ran back to his office and wrote the melody.
It's amazing how much Meghan Trainor follows in Lesley Gore's footsteps. If you listen to this then, say, All About That Bass, you can kind of feel the progression of this kind of girl power pop.
Loved the way Bette Midler, Diane Keaton and Goldie Hawn did this in First wives Club. My niece Kori and I were sitting on my brothers deck one day and she looked at me and I started singing it and we sang really loud and my brother was going crazy!!! Anyways I got off track. @MRM you would enjoy the song Heaven by Los Lonely Boys. They are also Native American singers. Yes I like the native groups. I really think you will enjoy it.
Okay. Here's a slightly different suggestion: Play, and react to Gene Kelly singing, and dancing to song of the movie of the same name - "Singing in the Rain". It'll put a smile on your face.
"Dirty Dancing" featured this song, but it was sung by a male. Leslie Gore was a singer at the forefront of the start of what was called the Women's Liberation Movement (Women's Lib for short).
It's true that "You Don't Own Me" is a strong message for a female to have sung in the early 1960s, but keep in mind that the lyrics of Lesley's other hits like "It's My Party", "Judy's Turn To Cry", and especially "Maybe I Know" stuck completely to the required feminine role of being subordinate to men at the time.
This song came out on the cusp of the Women's Liberation Movement, which went into full gear a couple years later. It was all about to explode. "I can't take it anymore!" they were saying.
u r my fav reaction person. always honest, whether we agree or not. everyone else pretends. know i give ya a tough time but u take in strive. .....very much appreciated
Oh yessss....In the Year 2525 is one of my all time favorite songs! I remember my mother dancing around the house to this song and it became engraved in my brain. House of the Rising Sun is another great song that always moves my heart!
this song was in Dirty Dancing with Patrick Swayze. But it has probably been in other movies. Its a classic. I love "It's My Party (and I'll Cry if I Want to)" lol
who doesn't like a Quincy Jones arrangement ? Mercury label days. Who else did it ? Joan Jett. Klaus Nomi got famous when Limbaugh used his version for an update theme.
If you ever seen the FIrst WIves Club....Its terrific with Goldie Hawn , Diane Keaton, Bette Midler...Hilarious....this song is what the trio of friends sing together....
First heard this on the Ed Sullivan Show in the early 60s. She was on his show a lot and actually may have gotten famous from her appearances. Back then Ed Sullivan was “America’s Show” on Sunday nite at 8pm. Back when we had three channels (or less in some cases).
Back in the '60's, top 40 radio was king. Everyone tuned in to listen to their favorite songs. It was commercial radio, so they constantly ran commercials. The average time of most records was 3:00 minutes, or less. The less the better. That way, they could play more commercials around the music. Long songs, like Hey Jude, at over seven minutes, cut into their profits.
You may have heard this song in the movie Dirty Dancing, it was sung by someone else in that sound track for some reason, but sounded basically the same. Yes, this was quite unusual back in 1965. I know this reaction is 2 years old, but I've just recently discovered this whole song reaction thing and I'm catching up. Yours are the best :)

A Beautiful song by the Angels ,Till Great for weddings and girls birthdays
*Elvis Presley - Trying To Get To You ('68 Comeback Special 50th Anniversary HD Remaster)"*
Tremendous performance.
I was 9 when this song was released, and it was really important in my life!
This 66 year old, FEMINIST, believes, this is what every woman thinks!
The female voice is protesting against her boyfriend trying to manipulate her like a puppet. This song was prominently featured in FIRST WIVES CLUB
LOVE THIS SONG!! Her Song it's my party was produced by Quincy jones
My Jammmmm! Ty ty loved your reaction 💗. Thx for sharing.
I recommend Petula Clark doing "Downtown" done in the early 60's .
I agree with this being revolutionary. For women to step out and publicly demand the same respect they give was unheard of. Love this
The movie you remember was called "The First Wives Club" and starred Goldie Hawn, Bette Midler and Diane Keaton in 1996. They dance and sing this song all wearing white outfits.
Wish that photo was in color. She had the bluest eyes going. She was one of the biggest hit makers during my junior and early high school years before the Beatles hit and changed everything.
This song came out late1963, after her earlier top ten hits It's My Party and Judy's Turn to Cry. This song......was so strong for its time.
Billy Currington "People Are Crazy". It has a nice storyline and it's a good country song.
Don't know if it is mentioned before, but the movie it was featured in, Dirty Dancing with Jenifer Gray and Patrick Swazey
There was also a great PSA set to this song. It came out a couple of years ago as lawmakers got more serious about legislating women's bodies.
This song was played in “The First Wives Club” movie. 😊❤️🎵
Loved 5his song.
It wad in First wives club at the end. It was in the Suicide Squad the joker and Harley Quinn part.
It's amazing how much Meghan Trainor follows in Lesley Gore's footsteps. If you listen to this then, say, All About That Bass, you can kind of feel the progression of this kind of girl power pop.
I was a kid (I'm 64) when that song was played on the radio. Remember it well.
Sung by the very beautiful talented LESLIE GORE. XXXX MAY SHE R IP XXXXX POPS
You may have heard this song on American Bañdstand, hosted by Dick Clark.
When I listen to singers from back in the day I want some of these "stars" today to sing acapella and the we'll find out who can actually sing.
I think you'll like one of the last songs she recorded before she passed called Better Angels. Real touching song.
Lesley Gore the sweet princess of Tenafly. RIP sweet princess.
I just love the way this song was recorded.
Okay. Here's a slightly different suggestion: Play, and react to Gene Kelly singing, and dancing to song of the movie of the same name - "Singing in the Rain". It'll put a smile on your face.
YES! Pure joy!
Absolutely!!!
I absolutely love this song!
Sunshine, Lollipops, and Rainbows by Leslie Gore.....the song you reacted to was on a recent commercial
The good old music and im only 25 and like music from old old 1900 all the way up to the 80s
She also played siren in the Batman tv series
It was in the movie First Wives Club... Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn, and Diane Keaton who sung a version of this at the end of the movie...
lord i feel old i saw her in concert lol
Leslie was a teenager at the time and was the ARTIST that put a new young producer named Quincy Jones on the Radar
u r my fav reaction person. always honest, whether we agree or not. everyone else pretends. know i give ya a tough time but u take in strive. .....very much appreciated
She was in season 3 of the Batman tv show in 1968.
Zager and Evans - In The Year 2525 .Please take a listen to this one. Very prolific song.
Oh yessss....In the Year 2525 is one of my all time favorite songs! I remember my mother dancing around the house to this song and it became engraved in my brain. House of the Rising Sun is another great song that always moves my heart!
@@athenasheffield2836 Great song!
this song was in Dirty Dancing with Patrick Swayze. But it has probably been in other movies. Its a classic. I love "It's My Party (and I'll Cry if I Want to)" lol
A true classic from the 60's.
Love her music! I was 11 yrs old and had her album. Awesome
4 years later I tell you, One time it was used in a movie, You Don't Own Me was in the original 1988 Comedy Hairspray@ 54:15
First wives club sang by Goldie Hawn ,Beit meddler, and Diane Keton. Also because I said so, with Diane Keaton, Mandy morre , and 2 others.
who doesn't like a Quincy Jones arrangement ? Mercury label days. Who else did it ? Joan Jett. Klaus Nomi got famous when Limbaugh used his version for an update theme.
If you ever seen the FIrst WIves Club....Its terrific with Goldie Hawn , Diane Keaton, Bette Midler...Hilarious....this song is what the trio of friends sing together....
Kind of ahead of her time. This song was released WAY before the "woman's movement". I like it .... always have.
Produced by Quincy Jones for the little girl from Tenafly NJ....Quincy produced all her hits....
I can still see Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn and Diane Keaton in The First Wives Club in the end where they are dancing down the street to this song.
Quincy Jones produced, wrote....with Leslie Gore. (See Netflix)
Somebody probably already mentioned this by now, but the song was also in Dirty Dancing but by different artists.
It was in “The First Wives’ Club”.
12/31/1963, Lesley Gore --------# 1 in LA, on KHJ, 930, AM. ----------RIP, Lesley Gore.------------Produced by Quincy Jones. ----------------------------WolfSky9, 72 y/o
Love this one. I was in the third grade in 1963 when this came out.
She's a lesbian, just in case you didn't know.
Adds context to her feelings.
Great song & reaction! How about some DUSTY SPRINGFIELD - "You Don't have to say you Love Me"...??
Oh Hell Yes!
How about "Anyone who had a heart?"
