F-ing ridiculous that Samsung removed this simple function.
I still use the S6 and this feature is a must have for me.
I use my S7 still just for this feature and have and NEVER or EVER will update or upgrade my phone untill it's totally non useable 🖒.

Handcent next sms is also works like that and with quick popup on main screen. And smart notify also gr8 applications... Textra is so nice.

This is so important to me. I always liked this feature over every other customization feature. It came stock in my Blackberry days.
Yeah not what I was looking for, I was hoping to set up stuff from my music play list as text notifications like I could with my ringtones.
Download zedge and if you have a samsung then go to notification sounds and press add. Should be in the audio file.

PunnyMegan zedge allows you to give ringtones individually but no option for sms tone. ive got zedge and have been abke to assign different ringing tones to each of my family and friends but when i want to give a different message tone to each of them there is no option

How do you customize the sound for individual contacts? I see how to do a conversation, but not an individual.

Can be done stock! In a message conversation tap 3 dots (top right), then notifications, then custom.

It depends on your phone and android system. I have the 2018 Galaxy J7 with Android 8.0.0.... There is no option anywhere on this phone that allows contact sms tone customization.
Be lucky that you have it though. :)
That's only the message conversation, so if you delete it, your tone for that person disappears
Yeah after some amount of time it asks to have you pay to stay ad free. Plus it's just setting the tone per conversation, not exactly per contact. I also don't like that it's not that compatible with the gear s2 or s3. You can get and send on it but no way of going into it unless you recieved a message, and you can only deal with that message. Not scroll through others if you needed to send someone else a message. I hope samsung fixes this back the way it was.

Great video as usual Jimmy! Yeah I've been using Textra for several years with no problems. I think it's very worth paying for the ad free experience IMHO. When they took away the ability to assign individual text tones for contacts in the new Samsung updates, I didn't feel the sting. I use Textra in conjunction with Zedge to download cool ringtones and notification sounds and assign them via textra. It's very seamless. People that give textra a bad review don't know how to work the settings properly I'm guessing... Idk. Cheers!

Going to look for your follow up video. If not addressed, before update I was also able to customize Contact profile pic to attach to each text bubble. While not near as important, can't find this feature on Textra... suggestions?

Textra is free. 14 days in fee for ad-free. Yes you can customize per contact as per S7 setup. Only draw back was sending MMS takes a few seconds longer than Native S9+ app. Best especially if you use dark themes or searching Gifs. The MMS might be a deal breaker for some but trade off for customizing worth it. App support is within 24hrs and very helpful

Thank you for this video. Tried Textra awhile back, didn't have enough customization for me. I've been using a messaging app called Yaata (available in the play store). It has so many things you can customize, just what I was looking for. If you're ever in the mood to try something different, I say give this app a try. Or another nice one is Mood. Always love watching your videos!

I've used Handcent before and got rid of it after a month or two. I'm digging this one, but I'll look into that one as well to see how it feels sometime

Used this years ago and it was fine, but I got bored and swapped over to Chomp. I have just tried it again and am surprised it doesn't seem to have progressed from my last time. Back to Chomp which continues to be the best messenger presently
Jimmy, Thanks for showing me how to personalize text sounds for my contacts but I'm still having an issue getting getting a different out going message sound . Each time I send a text the out going sound is always the same as the personalized sound for that person my phone is Samsung A50

What about the fact that my text tones sound like my email and other notifications? I cant make them sound different. I don't know if I'm getting a text or a damn email without looking. Annoying!

Rejoice! Finnaly an app on my S8 that allows me to assign text tones to a contact. My God....why couldn't Samsung so this? Slackers....
You should do a versus of texting apps. I started using the Verizon texting app after samsung messed theirs up. It allows for individual text tones but every once in a while I'll get a notification that my messages are syncing but it doesn't tell me with what or allows me to turn it off. Seems suspect to me.

I have a Samsung S23 Ultra and I purchased the TEXTRA app as I really wanted to add custom unique sounds by contacts, however in trying to follow your video I can never get to the point of seeing the down arrow that you mention. Please help!

Should should check out Messenger.....it's a google app, no ads at all and you can set different notification tones. You can't change the background however.
I have straight talk samsung j7 crown. I am glad I found this. I'm gonna mess with this to customize my contacts. I had LG g2 n g5 b4 they were cool but I hated being on a contract with vzn.

I have been very happy with Textra (yes, I paid to support it) for a few years. My one and only complaint is they still have not implemented a way to backup your settings, especially your contact customizations. They still say they are working on it. Otherwise, it is a great replacement.
It's nice that there's an app for texting, but I confess that I'm disappointed.

So the ultra S21 will allow in the message app but if you don't have a text from, say your dad, it doesn't save what sounds you may have set for that contact. So.... I have to save text messages from every single person that I want to have a specific sound notification from. Do you think this Textra app is still a better option then?

1st, your logo is fabulous. I am not able to change the sound. It's stuck on one. Samsung S9 said I had to change who has control of SMS to it. Samsung said I had to use Samsung as the default. Any suggestions? Thanks for addressing this issue. I've found that every update creates issues, such as automatically turning on data so I have to pay for minutes.

I downloaded Textra, tried it, but as it has been several years since you did this video, didn't work the same. So, uninstalled it. I have a Samsung A53 and want NO sound for my notifications (ie the pull down screen stuff, game updates etc) and want a couple different sounds for my MESSAGES, ie texts from different people, seems that is too much to ask despite the price of Samsung phones 🤬
How do I customize my text message notifications using that app but instead of picking one from Samsung sounds, I want to use a voice recoding I have saved in my files????
you dont need an app to set it back up you just need to put the audio file you want to use in the notifications folder then go onto the persons contact card in your phone book and you can set custom text tone it never went away it only changed
That is what happened to the option to customize each contact individual with a different text tone notification so instead of having the option to set a different text tone to each individual they to the customed option and moved it in the messages when you text a contact from the phone since the Samsung galaxys9 had new software update they changed it
This didn't help, there was no sound options in the notification style and I have a S20 Ultra

it isn't giving me the option to choose "notification sound" all it is showing me in the customize notifications is the icon, wake up screen and repeat notifications :(

I would like to use Zedge sounds and not the standard sounds. How do I do this? It used to be easy on the older phones but I can't figure it out on the Galaxy 9.
I believe I just found out what happened to the customed text tone notification for each individual in the contact well Samsung changed that option in order to customized text messages from each individual contact you have to open up the messages app that is installed already on the device when you text a person you will see 3 dots up at the top right hand corner there is a setting option there when you open up the setting option when you are in a conversation with a person you will see customized notification when you toggle that on you can tap on it and pick which song you have downloaded to your phone or the preinstalled one the catch is you have to be in a conversation and keep the thread open in order to customize the text notification now if you delete the conversation you will not here the customize song you choose if you delete the conversation thread it will go back to default if the conversation text thread is deleted
