"Make them tell you no" should be taught to all kids growing up for almost all areas in life. I wanted to be a pilot as a kid but my parents told me I couldn't be because I didn't have 20/20 vision, so I never tried. Would I have made it? No idea, but I eliminated myself without even trying. Don't sabotage yourself in other areas of life. It's better to try and fail than not try at all.

Absolutely right. I busted a lot of b*lls to get where I'm at today. However, I'm all about brute force and ignorance, if someone said to me that I couldn't do something, by hook or crook, I was gonna get it done, just to spite them. What Mover says in "Make them tell you no" is the same or darn close to the old saying, "nothing ventured, nothing gained. The first step for anyone, to become a fighter pilot, tank operator, or even a crew chief is to get off the couch.

I’m an army guy but I tried to do the street to seat route into WOFT after high school. I didn’t get it. My vision was like 20/400. So I enlisted, got PRK on the Army’s dime while stationed in Hawaii. Learned about the Green-to-Gold program. Applied to that and was accepted. Did well enough in college and ROTC to branch Medical Service so I could fly MEDEVAC. Flew the MEDEVAC mission for a few years and loved it. Now I’m an ATCer. It took years. But I persevered. MAKE THEM TELL YOU NO! And even if told no, rules change, their needs change, waivers can be granted. Find a new way. You CAN get there.

    Hey C.W.
Glad I picked the right time to pursue this. Almost 23 and decided to leave my full time blue collar gig to pursue a military career. My family told me to stay in school but I ignored them.. I changed my mind recently and decided to make something out of myself and go the college route instead of the trades. Just finished a 4.0 semester and turned my life in the opposite direction.
Seems to me that recruiting and retainment is down across the board because my generation is choosing private sector work instead of military. There is no better time to enter and chase the opportunities that the AF has.
Just signed up for AFROTC at my school. Would love to go guard but want to be an active duty officer above all. Working on my BA right now at my local CC before I transfer to my AFROTC host school. Going to put in for rated boards. Thanks for all of your help and guidance sir!

My grades are exceptional I currently have straight A’s and I spend the rest of my time in the simulator. I study Law and my biggest concern is whether or not the ANG will give me the contract I’m looking for. I want to be a pilot. Not a mechanic, not a crew chief, not ordinance tech, but a pilot. I’m willing to give of myself to the military for X amount of years but not for a position that the recruiter screwed me into. The contract needs to guarantee the position or else I can’t sign it. My question is, how can I get my staff sergeant to get me the right contract?

    • @CWLemoine

I was not a pilot, but I did enjoy backseat qualifications in the Hornet as a mech for 106.
I didn't graduate high school first. I did everything from Waivers. Was told I would never enter service as a rated person because of high school. I joined anyway and became an AD AC, BUT I really wanted a fighter jet squadron. I was told I'd never use my Aircrew skills in a fighter squadron so I made my way to the FRS and became invaluable to my unit and waiver qualed E-5 duties as a turn mech while still E-3 then got my qual for the Jet at NAS Jax and Cecil, flew Cross Country for repair jobs and early Detachment to the Boat, anytime a seat was available for me I hit it.
If I hadn't become disabled I dare say I would have worked my way to Officer and got that front seat spot.
Never take no for the answer. Find your way somehow to get that goal. Make yourself invaluable when you get there.
P.S. I can virtually Sim fly from the front seat after years of wondering what that was like, so even now, I'm still finding a way to get my dreams fulfilled.

For the first time in the sim, I did a maintenance turn up, and everything worked very well. Even the fuel transfer and electric power start has a good feel to it for sim versus rl. This is just a total trip for me. I'm like 4 months into learning how hard the pilots had to work. It looked so glamorous from my younger eyes 😆

Besides the obvious requirement for a college degree, would an applicant's LSAT score possibly be taken for consideration? It's the mandatory entrance exam needed to attend law school (similar to how the MCAT is required for medical school), while it isn't part of a college transcript, a high score on the LSAT is a great indicator of merit and hard work, the average individual doesn't just waltz their way in to a 160+ LSAT without taking it seriously and dedicating several months (possibly a year+) of dedicated study before they ever sit for the exam. I guess I'm just curious as to what is taken into account when considering an applicant other than physical fitness and their schooling/programs attended.
