I was in ROTC at Samford University (Birmingham Alabama) back in the mid to late 1980s. I had a navigators slot. Just before I was supposed to go off to McClellan AFB in California for training between my Sophomore and Junior year, we received word that the AFROTC program was being permanent closed at Samford. I was so disappointed. I ended up joining the Air Guard that summer with hopes of eventually getting a nav slot in an RF-4C Phantom. My dad and uncle flew F-4s. Well, the Air Force retired the F-4s in 1996, before I could gain a nav slot. I left the Air Guard when the base became an air refueling wing. Becoming a Air Force aviator takes a little luck too! I’m retired now and am working on obtaining my private pilots license. The dream to fly never left me!
Regarding pilot training age limits (4:34). Hasard Lee: "I've never heard of anybody going through pilot training at age 18." Here's your example. I'm a retired Air Force and commercial airline pilot. My first assignment following USAF pilot training (1979) was to serve as an instructor pilot (FAIP) at Sheppard AFB, TX. At that time, our squadron trained student pilots from the German and Dutch air forces. I was given one of each as my first two students. Lt Sander Panis (Dutch) was 18 and Lt Haider Klaus (German) was 22. At that time, Dutch candidates ascended into pilot training directly out of high school after first attending a three month officer training program. Both were talented and hard working and were assigned to fly the F-5A and F-4E respectively following graduation. Two years later, I was privileged to serve as an initial cadre PIT instructor for the Euro NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training (ENJJPT) program at Sheppard, whereby Americans and all of our NATO pilot candidates were trained for a future in fighter aircraft. ENJJPT continues in that mission to this day. So, yes, you can attend Undergraduate Pilot Training at the tender age of 18, and here is your example.
My Asthma got me really nervous for becoming a pilot but it was diagnosed when I was still playing biddy league soccer so I’m good on the asthma front, thanks for the video, af website was very confusing for me
Huge relief hearing about flying with glasses and contacts. I knew you didn’t have to have 2020 vision but I heard that you can’t fly with contacts in. I’ll have to look into it some more to see what my vision is right now, but that was a sigh of relief.
At 25 years old, I'm just now enlisting in the Navy. It was my dream since childhood to become a fighter pilot, but of course life has taken me on different paths. While serving, I plan to complete a STEM degree and work towards achieving my goal of becoming a fighter pilot. Don't ever give up on your dreams!
I want to fly the F-35 for the Air National Guard. I'm first signing up for the Oregon Air National Guard and am going to try my best to score high and become an aircraft maintainer. Then as time goes on, I'll use the money I earn to pay for both a bachelor's degree and a private pilot license so that I could at least TRY to get an F-35 slot. If I fail (which is likely), I can at least say I tried! :)
He didn't mention the accident rate. Most of us did just fine, but of all the guys I flew with about six or eight were victims of the ground rising up and smiting them at 250Kts+. More than six or eight really, but those are the ones I can still picture in my mind fifty years later.

@@HasardLee I am turned 33 in December of 2020. Today I spoke with an officer recruiter and she told me there is no such a thing as an age waiver for pilots. I am really surprised and disappointed I really thought there is such a concept for pilots. She mentioned herself as an example that she was refused due to age and no waiver. Do you have any advice?
I’m a 30 year old who recently graduated college with a 3.69 gpa. I served 4 years enlisted in the Marines from 2008-2012, but got a misdemeanor DUI in 2013 after getting out. Even though it’s a misdemeanor, does the DUI significantly reduce my chances of being accepted to pilot training?
Can you make a video about Commisioning programs that enlisted members can take advantage of to start a path on becoming a pilot? For example ASCP and SOAR.
It’s a bummer because when I was in high school I wanted to fly f-16. But back then you couldn’t wear glasses or contacts, you had to have basically perfect vision. This is the only reason I didn’t go into the Air Force

Please consider joining civil air patrol, it is the usaf auxiliary. You can get your pilot license through it. Also if you get a certain rank you automatically get into the Air Force Academy. They do search and rescue mission. You get free orientation flights. And if you want to get your pilots license it is really cheap. If you have any questions ask me.
Thank you for these videos, its been a lifelong dream of mine to be a fighter pilot. I'm applying to join ROTC this fall, hopefully I'll be a pilot in a few years.
How strict are they on the age requirement. Considering what’s going on in the world today you think that anyone who is physically and mentally capable of the job age would be irrelevant
When I was eight years old, I wanted to be a pilot, top gun hat came out and it was and still is my favorite movie. Well I needed glass and my older brother told me that I couldn’t be a pilot because I were glasses. My father, a B-52 crew chief, confirm that. I was heartbroken.
Two things killed my application in the water: 1) Physical fitness and strength/endurance. I was fit and capable, healthy, but not strong. I was at 18 BMI, not nearly at my best required for the role. 2) Disability Optic Neuritis took out my right eye, making me completely unsuitable for all roles. Best advice I can give is eat healthy and train four days a week. At the end of the day, when you don't make flight slot (like >95% of us applying), you'll at least be in great health for the rest of your life. In short, as anyone will tell you, you're up against 1000's of applicants. If you are not the BEST applicant they have, you ain't in. You weren't the school captain or involved in many group sports and youth leadership groups? Next please. You don't train your body to be in the best shape you can be? Next please. You don't pay attention in school, have bad reports or poor grades? Next please. If I could do it back again, I would absolutely not hesitate on training the physical strength and health up. It's vital, it's crucial, it is not overlooked for "skill". Don't make my mistakes - TRAIN with a sense of purpose.
If you already have a degree then go enlist; it adds a military experience before becoming an officer (pilot), but it is a waste of time if you don’t have a degree because an enlisted cannot be an officer without degree
Even if I got my citizenship expedited after BMT, I've red and heard that the security clearance board wouldn't allow me to go through UPT (after OTS) if my parents are still residing in my country of origin. Probably because of the fear that I might sip some top secret information outside of US. I don't understand why this becomes a red falg when a naturalised citizen already took an oat to protect the constution of the United States would be caught up in this situation. Would you kindly clarify or maybe create another video later to elaborate further on that? That would be helpful. Over all, thank you for the very informative video Hasard. 👍
@Avreus There are a lot of books out there like Barron’s and Trivium... I feel like those are the most popular. But to be honest they aren’t the best... I recommend making an account on air warriors and look up the ASTB, that exam consists of math, reading comprehension and mechanical. The study guides people made relate to the actual exam. But if I were to get a book I recommend the Barron’s Flight Aptitude Tests
@@ChickentNug ASVAB is a lot easier than the ASTBE. I actually just took it a few months ago and got decent scores, waiting for the pilot boards in May I’ll find out in June. Amazing. I meet at these requirements except for the age. I hold a Bachelors degree in Astrophysics with a minor in Mathematics. While in college I got my private pilot cert, then knocked out my IFR, multi, & commercial. I’ve been flying freight since I was 24 in E120’s, Lear 35’s, DC9’s with A LOT of hours in various weather conditions. I’m 35 now and I was told that I was too old. Biologically, I look and feel 25. I’ve always taken care of my health. Maybe I should travel and see if anyone other recruiters will take me, I feel cheated
I’m 22, I meet all the requirements. I have had one year of college. Since I was little I just knew I wanted to go fast. I don’t know where to begin but this video helped. I know I can do it.

The astigmatism clause is probably because you may have a difficult time reading your hud. I know as a shooter that people with astigmatisms will sometimes experience a “blooming effect “ when using a red dot type weapons system, that is the dot will actually appear larger and fuzzy. It’s almost like seeing a rose image instead of just a single dot . Astigmatisms however have no effect when using a holographic type weapons systems, ie an EOtech or the Vortex Huey.
What this info neglects to point out is the fact these are just the qualifications to get into USAF Undergraduate Pilot Training. Once there, there is is a washout rate, which has been as high as 50% in the past. If you wash out, you still have a military commitment as an officer for several years. You might go to navigator training or you might be assigned to supply, maintenance, etc. At some point these days, the remaining class is segregated between those who are going to multi-engine aircraft training and those who are going to fighter aircraft. I say “these days”, as this was not the case in 1969 when I graduated from Pilot Training. We were qualified to fly any aircraft. And, there are still more opportunities to wash out in these programs before you get your wings. So, the Air Force isn’t going to just assign you to fly fighters, no matter what your youthful dreams are. You have to earn it.
I wish that requirements was in Mexico to become a pilot, but here they want you to be like the perfect man with a eagle vision and they don't even have 5th gen aircraft. Great video by the way.
im 13 and have a goal to become a usaf fighter pilot. what i did not know before watching this was the part about ADHD. i have not minor but not bad adhd but i still have to take medication for my metabalism. Would this make me ineligeable to become a pilot if i still have to take medication when i apply? if anyone knows the answer please let me know.
Hey! I’m 13 and also willing to join, (saw top gun 2, loved it with every fiber in my body) I just read up online about medication, and apparently you have to be off it for a considerable length time to show that you are able to function properly. I can’t confirm if this is true, but I hope that helped!
If I wanted to fly heavies would that be pretty much the same process I enlisted into the guard and hope to fly C-130s, and would getting any flight hours help me get into a C-130 seat.
C. W. Lemoine did a similar video to this, and IIRC the answer is pretty much "depends". He said they're a lot more forgiving for Engineering and Math-Related majors, which makes sense since those courses will kick your ass. I'll see if I can dig that video up for you. Edit: This is the video. 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale, some boards will cut you slack for STEM Degrees. ua-cam.com/video/neLb4sSO0FU/v-deo.html

Hi Hasard, I got 2 questions, how does the air force treat mild COPD ( chronic obstructive pulmonary disease ) for a fighter pilot slot? For my case the doctor said the test results are questionable and it is not concrete so it might be just due to seasonal allergies. This was 3 years ago and I made some changes to my health. I quit smoking hookah permanently (over 1 year now) and weight lifting. My other question is when does the air force do pulmonary testing for lung health in the selection process ? Thank you for your time !

Huge relief of him saying any degree
I’m currently 15 and I would still love to do this I’m taking ROTC for high school and hope everything goes well
If you get top grades, you'll be much more likely to get what you wish for in the military. It's also just good practice.
Two most important items for becoming a fighter pilot: 1, big watch 2 cool aviator sun glasses !
thanks a lot for uploading these requirements, especially the portion on vision. I had no idea it was that lenient.
Dang man I’m sorry to hear that. I’m glad that you have stayed airborne yourself😁
Great video, thanks for all the valuable info
Love that your starting to get into creating UA-cam content. Loved for your podcast but prefer this above all. Currently waiting for a waiver for some knee surgeries I had a while back. My cousin is Rhett “hero” Hierlmeier. He has been guiding me throughout this process!
Thanks and good luck! Hero and I crossed paths briefly at Luke-you’re in good hands.
Almost certainly
I’m 34, going on 35 end of may.. I’m going to give it a go and try my luck at a waiver
How did it go?
Can you make a video about Commisioning programs that enlisted members can take advantage of to start a path on becoming a pilot? For example ASCP and SOAR.
Thank you this was very much helpful
im in 10th grade planing to be a pilot, i must say i am eyeing my opponents in these comments...
Thanks for the good info .
When you have all the requirements but you have adhd 👌🏽😒
same and i take medicine :( i am very high functioning adhd so hopefully i will still be able 2
It’s a bummer because when I was in high school I wanted to fly f-16. But back then you couldn’t wear glasses or contacts, you had to have basically perfect vision. This is the only reason I didn’t go into the Air Force
Hasard, can you elaborate on why you would NOT got enlisted --> OTC --> Pilot?
Unfortunately I'm already 31 without a degree. I wouldn't be able to get into it. But just once I'd love to be able to go up in an F15.
That's sad dude !
@@williamclark1827 yea but it is what it is. I was too focused on one Dre that ended up having no job security and never got my degree to fly. Maybe in another life it could have been. But still just once I'd love to go for a ride in one.
@@tftrainman What do you do for a living right now with no degrees ?

Hasard Lee great man
"wouldn't recommend going enlisted duty"
Me, a SrA with a nervous smile on my face
To the point information and very useful presentation .
Thank you Sir🇺🇸
Please consider joining civil air patrol, it is the usaf auxiliary. You can get your pilot license through it. Also if you get a certain rank you automatically get into the Air Force Academy. They do search and rescue mission. You get free orientation flights. And if you want to get your pilots license it is really cheap. If you have any questions ask me.
And if you consider doing make sure you tell me
You don't automatically get accepted into USAFA....
@@Andromedon777 yeah I know
@@Andromedon777 I misunderstood it
Thank you for these videos, its been a lifelong dream of mine to be a fighter pilot. I'm applying to join ROTC this fall, hopefully I'll be a pilot in a few years.
where are you now
Hopefully you're getting close to your goal!
How’s it going
Dear, Hazard! There is a die cast F-35 scale behind you. What model is it, who's the manufacturer?
How strict are they on the age requirement. Considering what’s going on in the world today you think that anyone who is physically and mentally capable of the job age would be irrelevant
Gs take a massive toll on the body
I know God will make me a pilot in USAF no matter what
You will do so don't rely on him
When I was eight years old, I wanted to be a pilot, top gun hat came out and it was and still is my favorite movie. Well I needed glass and my older brother told me that I couldn’t be a pilot because I were glasses. My father, a B-52 crew chief, confirm that. I was heartbroken.
that really sucks man. sorry to hear that
Thanks for the info, i dont have perfect vision and feared that would auto disqualify me. But knowing this now, im going to shoot my shot at the ANG.
Two things killed my application in the water:
1) Physical fitness and strength/endurance.
I was fit and capable, healthy, but not strong. I was at 18 BMI, not nearly at my best required for the role.
2) Disability
Optic Neuritis took out my right eye, making me completely unsuitable for all roles.
I start my ROTC this semester, your words gave me courage, thanks!
This is absolutely great video. Thank you.
Why would you not recommend enlisting prior to becoming a pilot?
If you already have a degree then go enlist; it adds a military experience before becoming an officer (pilot), but it is a waste of time if you don’t have a degree because an enlisted cannot be an officer without degree
Got a good TBAS score, got everything perfect, but my GPA ruined my chance back in the day, and ended up getting 13N
I also want to be usaf fighter pilot .......i recently passed 12th with phycics and maths ......plzzz sir reply I'm foreigner
I have to retake my AFOQT, that test way way harder than I thought it was going to be
@Avreus There are a lot of books out there like Barron’s and Trivium... I feel like those are the most popular. But to be honest they aren’t the best... I recommend making an account on air warriors and look up the ASTB, that exam consists of math, reading comprehension and mechanical. The study guides people made relate to the actual exam. But if I were to get a book I recommend the Barron’s Flight Aptitude Tests
how does it compare to the ASVAB? I know it's harder, but how much?
@@ChickentNug ASVAB is a lot easier than the ASTBE. I actually just took it a few months ago and got decent scores, waiting for the pilot boards in May I’ll find out in June. But honestly really depends on how hard you want to study. You can pass anything it’s just are you willing to put in the work
@@captnhutch so did you get the sna slot?? Can I ask your astb scores?
@@TrollerzTV I actually took the ASTBE for the navy I got a 53 6/7/5 and the SNA boards were about 3 weeks ago so I should know this week if I got in or not. If not I’ll just reapply. Idk if I’m taking the AFOQT over again
Love you guys. all you have to be is super smart and in great shape, easy.
You might be able to fly for another countries AF, just saying
Very nice ! 👍
I really want to become an airforce pilot but I'm only 16. so I guess that's just a dream (for now).
I’m 22, I meet all the requirements. I have had one year of college. Since I was little I just knew I wanted to go fast. I don’t know where to begin but this video helped. I know I can do it.
If you can try online college
So glad I qualify in all the above. This dream is looking more achievable every day.
Asthma kills it for me. And im 40...i think they would say... HELL NO. Plus i did have eye surgery done over 10 years ago. I still have perfect vision tho. In another life...
Do you think being prior service will help or work against you if trying to get age waiver?
Why would it hurt? I have no clue but I imagine if off by a year or two you might have a chance if you look good otherwise.
Very good video
Correct, get off the meds and show you're able to function and be off for an extended period of time
If I wanted to fly heavies would that be pretty much the same process I enlisted into the guard and hope to fly C-130s, and would getting any flight hours help me get into a C-130 seat.
What kind of school grades do you need to become a pilot
So with the degree do you have to get it before you join the airforce? Also what if you still take meds for ADHD?
Im hoping to apply for the German Luftwaffe
I heared one old pilot (US Airforce academy in 1964 - left the Airforce in 1990) say that is is very hard to get a command unless you are married.
I had a hard time understanding what was a joke and what was serious. So I don't know : )
I’m currently enlisted in the AF and on my 6th year and just re-enlisted!! This gives me huge hope. I going to be a pilot no matter what. Believe it!!
Wow I did not know that my home base operates b2 stealth bombers
Hasard, JUICE here with a question...my High School Freshman Daughter (Class of 2025) is well on track to fill her requirements for USAFA acceptance and she wants to serve in Bio Sciences in the Air Force after graduation. However, the biology program she desires is offered at The Military Academy at West Point. I remember when I was in the 98th Air Refueling Squadron in the day, we had a Lieutenant, a Maintenance Officer who graduated from the Naval Academy. QUESTION: Do you have any information on Academy Exchange Programs and could you vector us in the right direction to find more information on cross-service academy programs? Love your channel, thanks for sharing and push it up...BTW, I was a Panton and caught what you said, you Juvat!
How physically fit must you be?
Is it possible to become a fighter pilot with type 1 diabetes?
I've gotten all Fs in school then dropped out, I drink too much, but ive got a good heart. I want to become an f35 pilot , ok, I'll settle for an f22. Thanks
Is it still possible to become a pilot while your enlisted ?
What about tooth cavities? and dental requirements?
Hi Hasard, I got 2 questions, how does the air force treat mild COPD ( chronic obstructive pulmonary disease ) for a fighter pilot slot? For my case the doctor said the test results are questionable and it is not concrete so it might be just due to seasonal allergies. This was 3 years ago and I made some changes to my health. I quit smoking hookah permanently (over 1 year now) and weight lifting. My other question is when does the air force do pulmonary testing for lung health in the selection process ? Thank you for your time !
Anyone else here from the new top gun movie? Same.
Can an International Student join USAF ?
Requirements to become a pilot:
-Take AFOQT
-Pass AFOQT
-Get picked for Officer Training School
-Select Rated Postion
- Then go to Pilot School
so you say that there is a shortage of pilots currently, my question is, do you think there still be in 7 years ? (that's when i should get my degree)
Also i'm french with the dual citizenship, do you recken a french degree is still valid for this.
thanks
What is the Minimum ASVAB score for a Fighter Pilot.
A 90. Which is what I've been told, but I would suggest talking to a recruiter about that.
I’m 32 year old and I call tons of Recuiter and I was told that AF closed accepting Officer this year and apply for next year.. so another AF recruiters told me apply for Enlisted first, then 1 year later switched for pilot. ( Recuiter said since I graduated I could start E3 🤔 )
( My dream job either C17 or B2 pilot 🙏🏻 )
I’m confused what to do??? ( Btw major in Finance )
This is my dream job I have always wanted to be a Air Force pilot
What if your slightly color blind, is there wiggle room to be accepted into PT?
Air Force recently had some easing up on the restrictions for color blindness and the Navy has a reputation for being more lenient in that area. I suggest looking into it
I’m a type one diabetic and am very interested in joining. I’ve had it for over 11 years and I can maintain a healthy lifestyle. Any ideas on what the Airforce would say about that?

The only thing hinders me to apply is my Nationality. If the Philippines continue to be a state of US after 1946 i would have been an air force pilot. Its my dream. No chance it can happen here in my country. Since there is no force in our air force.
