- Southern Pacific's B-70-44 class 50' double-door boxcars were built for Evergreen in the 1960s. SP bought them second hand and repainted them in SP colors. These unique cars had a special vent system for carrying paper pulp. This HO scale Athearn Genesis model is loaded with detail, and is an accurate rendition of this common SP boxcar. Dan unboxes the model and reviews its packaging, prototype accuracy, paint & detail, and how well it operates and conforms to applicable standards. These cars ranged far and wide, so even if you don't model the SP, you might want to pick up one or two for your model railroad!

I enjoy that you use a standard approach to evaluating model freight cars.
Thanks. I try to keep a consistent and mostly objective format, and having a standardized way of doing reviews helps with that. Thanks for watching!
Nice dan
Thanks for watching!
I have a number of these plug door boxcars and I love them! Beautiful detail and they run great!
They're nice cars. Thanks for watching!
Great review.....I especially like the grading scale you use. I scored this review 100 points out of a possible 100 which earned a sub.
Catching up on comments... I'm glad you liked the review. Thanks for watching and subscribing!
Great product review, glad to see that you recognized the car wobbling issue, i own 1 example of this freight car in the Great Northern 'glacier green' scheme- Tom.
Wobbling is something I test for in all my reviews. GN glacier green is cool. Thanks for watching!
Great Review Dan! I have a couple of these cars.... A little weathering really makes all the details stand out. I replace all plastic couplers with Kadee's. After doing so, the coupler heights were perfect. I did add another ounce of weight - 1/2 oz on each end. It's a really nice running/looking car!
These are nice cars, though I agree, the plastic couplers have to go. Thanks for watching!
Dan that Car would look Grest behind Dads Burlington Northern GP50 and A New S.P. Bay Window with Lights I've seen them and a Caboos looks good anyway behind a few Cars and Engine..
It would be cool on a BN train. Thanks for watching!
Nice review Dan! I love the addition of advice to fix the body wobble and changing the couplers in the video. I love the shelf behind you as well.
Some people have asked about stuff like that, so I thought I'd start adding some simple fixes like that to the review videos when appropriate. I just put up those shelves in an ongoing effort to organize my office (and because I had a ton of shelf brackets I needed to do something with). Thanks for watching!
Great review on boxcar Dan, with excellent details

Nice touch on the coupler change and truck adjust demos. Unfortunately, the car is out of my time zone.
I'm glad you like the stuff I added. Thanks for watching!
Another good boxcar model from Athearn. Would it be possible to change the underframe for a Kadee one with a working cushion underframe?
It might be possible, though since the Kadee car is a completely different boxcar it probably wouldn't be accurate. It would likely require a lot of modification to make it work. Thanks for watching!
@@DanielCortopassi Thank you for your reply.
So did you have to adjust the Kadee #58 scale head coupler after installing it? If so what thickness of polystyrene do you use.
Usually if I have to use coupler box shims I'll try .010 or .015 first. Sometimes I use the Kadee shims that come in those thicknesses. Once in a while a model will need something thicker, so it really depends on the situation. On this model I didn't shim the coupler boxes. I used Kadee washers on the bolsters. I used a red one on one end and a gray one on the other. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for your product reviews. Have you considered reviewing track?
I haven't reviewed any track so far, but I'll consider it for the future. Thanks for watching!
It is ridiculous at those prices you can't get metal couplers instead of cheap plastic junk.
I think Horizon Hobby, which owns Athearn, also owns McHenry couplers, so I wouldn't expect Athearn to change what they're doing in that regard. I agree that metal couplers are better. Thanks for watching!
