    Hey there kids! Its Uncle Ben Eller, and on Weekend Wankshop 237, we are going to learn one of the best solos in heavy metal history: Killing Road by Megadeth, featuring Marty Friedman and Dave Mustaine (from the criminally-underrated Youthanasia album)!
    Ever since i put up my cover video of this legendary solo, i've had a lot of you guys asking for a full lesson breakdown on it... and since i aim to please, here we are! This is an amazing solo if you're looking to learn all about Marty's amazing phrasing and arpeggio use; The Tornado of Souls solo features some great triad licks, and this one may be even cooler, in my opinion!
    In this video, we will talk about the tuning, tones, and all the licks from both of these solos. This is a note-for-note breakdown, so take your time with it! Its a pretty dang tough solo. And don't skimp on that awesome Friedman vibrato!!!
    Using my Ibanez RG550 with Fishman Fluence Classic pickups, straight into my Fractal Axe-FX III using the "Learning to Lead" preset from the Petrucci Rig. I am so amazed by the Axe-FX III, it is INCREDIBLE!
    Thanks so much for watching! What other classic solos would you like to learn here on my channel?

    Youthanasia is indeed underrated! I pimp this album as an intro to Megadeth for the uninitiated. You are right, awesome riffs and harmonies. Plus Family Tree is a super sad and creepy song and lyrically the album feels one of the most honest/introspective of their catalog. This solo is well beyond my current skill level, but Ima gonna try a lick or two. Thanks Benjamin!

      He gave me the pick he used during the clinic afterwards...its an AST Jazz 3 kind of pick. My lucky day on this earth.

    Youthanasia was most definitely a great follow up to Countdown (my personal favorite) and most definitely under rated. One of the best things about this album was the artwork on the inside with the picture of Jesus wearing a Megadeth T-shirt. I found a certain peace knowing that the boss man enjoys good heavy tunes.

  • @PhantomLord114
    @PhantomLord114 5 років тому +21

    Fun fact from a Megageek: the original pressing of the album in 1994 was, in fact, entirely a perfect half step down. Only on the 2004 reissue did some of the tunings get wonky.

      The official youthanasia tab book had the album in the weird 1/4 step tuning

    • @PhantomLord114
      @PhantomLord114 5 років тому +5

      Andy M A word of caution on tablature books. They’re not always 100% accurate, whether it be in notation or album details. Off the top of my head, Elysian Fields, The Killing Road, and Blood of Heroes were the three songs affected on the reissue. You ought to be able to find the original versions here on YT

    • @kommissar.murphy
      @kommissar.murphy 5 років тому

      How did that happen?
      Was it played a half step down, or was it lowered in the mastering phase?

    • @PhantomLord114
      @PhantomLord114 5 років тому +1

      @@kommissar.murphy I can only guess, but there's some really cool footage from the making of the Youthanasia album that can also be found here on UA-cam. Any shots from the studio itself has the guitars tuned a half step down, and it also seems to me that they recorded the album to tape rather than digitally. It's possible that the tape could've been sped up in the remastering process, which could explain the tuning issues.
