  • Sunny days are just meant for walking! In this video, Abbie heads out to the Isle of Portland with the aim of walking the circular coastal path. They pass countless sites of interest along the way, including Portland Bill, the southernmost point in Dorset, and investigates the HM Young Offenders Institution, WW2 pill boxes, beaches, coves, ancient castle remains, quarries and so much more.

What a lovely surprise to see our neighbours Andy, Erica and the lovely Monty on your video. They have moved now but many a time I have taken Monty for a walk along those east wears.
Don't let the locals hear you say the R word on Portland. They are very superstitious and believe that bunnies' cause cave ins and rock slides and generally bring bad luck when you call them the R word! I always get shouted at by my partner. LOL.
If you ever return keep a look out for the wild Portland goats that frequent the firing range that you can see on your video at 14.53 and also adders where you sat on the rock. You should also check out Portland Museum founded by Dr Marie Stopes and the Pirates graveyard both near Church Ope.
Thanks for the video, as usual it was very enjoyable, just a shame I missed it last year.

Thank you for all your wonderful videos Abbie. I am gradually trying to watch them all! Those huts at Portland Bill took me right back to a childhood holiday there (in the 70s) where every night was disturbed by the fog horn, or so I remember it.

I spent a day in Portland on a cruise ship earlier this year and did the walk until the lighthouse, but had to take a bus back to make it back on time. This is a nice reminder of everything I noticed on the my walk, past the two prisons, the steep wall of Rufus Castle and the lighthouse surrounded beautiful pink spring flowers. Thank you and keep on walking!

Wow! Well, I'm heading down to Dorset next week (the weather's set to be not so great, but never mind!) so have been watching UA-cam videos to get some ideas of what to do while I'm there. I'm SO glad I stumbled across your channel! Your joyful personality, heartfelt appreciation of the natural world and your infectious smile have me hooked. So even if the weather is a bit "British" while I'm there, I'll take a leaf out of your book and just appreciate what's around me, come rain or shine! Thank you. 😊

Enjoyed the video! That was one of my favourite walks, have not been back in years. I used to end off the day with a trip to Rays Fish Shop for a lovely meal of cod and chips. The Isle of Portland once you get away from Portland Harbour never seems to change, almost like going back in time. I certainly enjoy your videos and miss the UK. Greetings from Oregon.

Lovely lovely place. Walked your walk many times. Thanks for the wonderful film and commentary. The ship you saw was RFA Tiderace. The history of POrtland is fascinating. The quarry industry and its history is well worth investigating. Thanks for taking me along - you brought back many superb memories. As an aside, I hope the person who gave you the blackeye, came of worse than you. Superb Abbie!

I don't often comment on here, but I wanted to say how much I enjoyed your video and particularly your happy, enthusiastic commentary, you are such a positive individual.
I'm lucky enough to live on Portland and like to walk our dogs all over it.
On your walk for future reference you can have a walk around fields surrounding combefield quarry, you just need to avoid the quarry part. Just keep left on entering through the big entrance gates.
I'll be on the lookout for your next video from here on Portland

It took me 5 nights and one morning to get to Inverness, Abbie. West End long stay car park in Ft William after overnight road trip from London then 16.6 miles day day 1, 10.8m day 2, 10.6m day 3, 9.83m day 4, 16.9m day 5 leaving a nice 12.1m stroll into town to catch the 5.30 bus back to Ft William. Those three 10 mile days were really short days because I couldn't pass up spectacular wild camp positions along the high route of Loch Ness and another loch.
My video here if you are interested which showcases the backpack and wild camps: ua-cam.com/video/ciwH30N2t2Q/v-deo.html If you need more info let me know :-)

Really enjoyed that walk round my fave place Abbie thank you. It's a pity that the closed path means you don't drop down into Chesil Cove as it's a beautiful spot & very popular with divers. Agree with all you say about being outside helping our mental health & contemplating our effect on nature. I don't like all the quarrying & sadly it meant the destruction of a huge burial mound, Kingbarrow & a stone circle! Such a tragedy. I'm moving to Portland very soon I hope.

    my home :)
There are quite a few hidden sights, have you been to the ghost tunnels?
btw I don't think it being a heritage site will change much, thousands of houses have been built over the past decade and more are planning on being built and so on, quite sad because in my grandads time this was a lovely place for outside things like camping and walking, still is, but very little green land compared to that time tbh
areas around 20mins are where I went camping last year, quite lovely, lots of wildlife too, adders, lizards etc
at 29:30, I can remember when the coastal path was actually there, a lot further out, but erosion takes its toll and that part of the cliff completely fell off during a storm

What a lovely place to live! I haven't been to the ghost tunnels?!?! What are they!? I love that the more time you spend in a place, the more you learn and discover - if only I had more time!! Hiya, thanks for watching and the comment. I literally just use my GoPro hero 3+ as it is! I switch between the usual shell housing, or an open case housing, and when it rains I put the waterproof back on so the sound isn't good - its a great piece of kit and very versatile. I don't like spending ages faffing with kit so I do my best to keep it simple and stay in tune with the weather around me.
