This reminds me of how a friend at my kickboxing gym in 98 told me he had a seen at the beach a guy that had come to our gym a couple of times got a bit roughed up in the ring and never came back. Yet there he was at the beach with a tank top from our gym acting like he was the man. My pal pointed out that it happens often, and most guys don't want to put in the time or take the lumps, they just want the shirt and to act the part. He proposed we start a t shirt company to cater to these fools. We made a logo, but as teens do, got distracted and never followed through. This is one of my lifes regrets. A minor one. Keep in mind this was before tapout or affliction or any other mma apparel company catering to posers had come out. We'd have made a fortune off that crowd.

My father, who was a cop for 40 years used to say if you’re a bad ass you don’t need a T-shirt that says so. I tell my students that the dumbest thing they could possibly do is let on that they know how to fight before the fight starts. All that is is an escalation of violence. You’re basically telling the other guy he needs to get friends or a weapon or cheat in someway to make sure you don’t get to use your martial art. Most martial arts that were originally used for self-defense and not warfare, are used in an ambush or counter ambush method. Meaning you cannot let on that you know anything until they make the first move and then you use their move against them. This is why things like wing Chun don’t work in a consensual violence situation. Great talk, be safe.

There you go saving more lives Dr. Sai. Being a student of Seido Karate out of NYC in the late 80s I bet we know some of same people like Shihan William Oliver, Kaicho Tadashi Nakamura and Kaicho Shigeru Oyama. A great Student of William Oliver was a young extremely gifted Karate- ka was Sampai Lincoln Panteone. He was one of our greatest Black belts. He alway wore his leather SEIDO KARATE JACKET. One night after class a man shot and killed this great fighter. He was still wearing his Seido jacket. I’ve many great black belt but Lincoln was special, he was the future. I’ve been jumped many times and I’m still here. I knew not to advertise any fighting abilities I had. Because I grew up Black in the streets of Brooklyn. Well said! I remember talking with some other guys who know that I box. They don't think I'm Ali or nothing but they know I can box a little bit. I told them the fact that I have boxing experience doesn't mean I can't get my *** kicked and doesn't help me when the person decides not to play the hand game with me and either grabs me or pulls a knife. He may just even be a naturally bigger and stronger person than I am and able to take much more punishment or he may be on a drug that prevents him from even feeling pain at all. Violent non-law abiding individuals DO NOT CARE about rules and will fight dirty. All those things must be considered! I still try my best to avoid bad situations in the first place as I'm admittedly timid by nature because despite knowing how to box I know I'm no where near invincible. Awareness to prevent a bad situation is the best martial art of all if someone asks me and comes before having to use violence

people like Joe Rogan thinking that a guy like Tito Ortiz who's a famous UFC Fighter would scare away a real serial killer for example ... if anything, being a world famous fighter will do you more harm than good, especially if they have a massive ego and cocky attitude, because everyone knows you but you hardly know anyone out there, and if a guy like Tito Ortiz came up to a criminal trying to say steal his car, and the criminal IMMEDIATELY RECOGNIZES HIM, I have no doubt he would just pull out his gun and shoot him ... because he knows he's far too big of a risk to just get physical with or even run away from because he's a pro level fighter and a tremendous athlete ... a bullet would nullify any sort of risk ... THEN run away ... but bjj and mma morons never seem to learn this reality, they think the octagon is reality, UFC rules apply to the street and a bjj black belt can somehow stop bullets lol

If you're from anywhere where violence actually happens you understand that combat sport will be useless against a gun and you realize just how common guns are. You also realize the more cowardly the person weilding the gun the more likely they will actually plug you off of straight knerves alone. Ive loved martial arts my whole life. Last time I actually used them in a street fight the guy whipped a 9 out of his sweatpants pocket. No blatant holster to telegraph it. Luckily enough for me this guy had a sense of honor and we fist fought, ended up shaking hands and walking away. It never left me how quickly i could've died in that moment. All i said was "so what? You're going to shoot me?" Like the immense consequences of literally dying didn't even strike me at the time. It was afterwards. Stay safe y'all. A lot of martial arts movie stuff is hoopla admittedly, but Mr Miyagi did say one of the best "self defense" lessons of all time in my opinion. "Best block no be there". I run a non profit martial arts/combat sports club in my community and showed this video at the beginning of our last practice. Thank you for the lesson in the importance of humility and for reinforcing the concept I have been bringing up at the club for a while now which is simply my belief that having Judo/Wrestling (on the feet grappling/throws/takedowns) is a lot more important than having high level BJJ in a "self defense" or "street" situation.
