The worst part is some don’t tell you how to properly install the string into the knobs and his method with turning the string. I broke 2 strings already because of that. This is my first time changing strings and believe me I was dreading for this day.
The most common rule of thumb is pull each string (2) tuning pegs past the specific peg for each string. I go 2.3 pegs past just to be sure. I use a different method for the first wrap than some videos. Just make sure that you have some sort of bend of the string over or under the string in the first wind to ‘lock’ it. Wound strings (low E, B, and D) strings, pull the end of string over the rest of string. Wound strings (G, B, high E), wrap first wrap over and second wrap under the rest of string. Too much extra string winding created more potential for tuning issues. Hope this helps.
Play guitars for many years, always had a little struggle with stringing the guitar. This is the first video who shows me a clear and GOOD method to restring. Never was finished with restringing so quickly as with this method. Thanks.
The best explanation with the clearest footage of exactly how to gauge the slack and how to wrap around the tuning pegs. If you’re not a super frequent player (like me) you need a quick refresher each time. Save this vid!
I been restringing my guitar all wrong 😅 Yours looks very clean and mine comes out all to the point of the string almost over the peg.. I will do it next time like this when I restring it . Thanks for the great video
After 2-3 yearsof playing the electric I learn this method. Damn, I have missed out. This is the best way to do it by far. Thanks so much bro, you saved moe so much time and suffering.
This is the best video for changing guitar strings, I always dread changing them, and this made me feel confident in doing it, and was the best I have ever restringed my guitar.
On Stratocasters and guitars with floating bridges, I prefer to put the strings on one at a time and bring each string to close to tune. This keeps the bridge tension in the same relative position. If I take all the strings off, then the bridge has collapsed due to spring tension. This results in time-consuming tuning to bring the bridge back up to its correct balance or neutral position.
Thanks for the video, it's very useful as I have only restrung guitars with locking tuners up until now. One thing I would add is it's worth also making a note of which strings go through your string tree if your guitar uses one - different guitars have different strings held by them and they can be positioned so it isn't always obvious which treble strings go under them.
The part where you have to wrap the string around the peg I cannot get that part right.... i wrap it around and then it just pops loose and back over the peg.... do you have to pull the string tight to kind of secure it in place before you start winding???
After you wrap it, keep hold of the string and keep tension, then with the other hand bend the excess up and then wind with that hand, the whole time keep tension on the string with the hand you wrapped with.
I just tried this method for the first time today, I find it way easier to just pull the string through, pull it back a bit, pinch it, and wind it, it looks way better
Aaron, I felt like an idiot because I could not string an S style guitar. Your instructional video answered all my questions and showed me exactly what I needed to do. Yours is the best video on this rather basic topic, specifically with regard to string slack and the proper methods for wrapping around the post. It was only after watching your video, several times, that I restrung my Strat exactly the way I wanted to, pinching the end of the string between the upper and lower wraps. Thank you again. Stewmac is the best.
Great video. Used this technique and changing the strings just flew. I found it way easier and faster. I always had trouble with the thinner strings but doing it this way I had no trouble at all.
i finally changed strings for the first time ever. hadnt changed strings for over a year. took a bit of trial and failure but when i first got it i was very good
Great vid - brief, to the point. Hate to admit I took a break from playing long enough I didn't remember exactly how to restring a guitar. Need a refresher so I didn't mess up a string or 6!
I never comment on people on UA-cam, but heck that was pretty painless and straight to the point educational for putting on the guitar strings. Stay down with your bad self
based on the fact that I have started the adventure with my electric guitar around 25 years ago, when I was 12-13 years old, I doubt I would be cutting the strings because as a kid, you you would still keep them safe as a "spare ones" Nowadays.... 2 days ago ordered a new set of strings for a price (with delivery) of a coffee from Starbucks. How times are changing.....
Thanks! It's been over 20 years since I've changed a string and that was an acoustic. I don't recall Ever changing the whole fretboard. So I appreciate the info to make sure it's done right!
Excellent tutorial. I especially like the tip for slack (length of one tuning machine), and then wrapping the slack around the machine, although I didn’t follow that part when stringing but oh well, you live and learn.
Thanks for the awesome video, I hadn't changed my strings in over 6 months and I kinda forgot so this video was a nice refresher. I only broke one string but I had a spare then I installed the rest without any issues.
I re-strung my old electric for the first time in years. Despite leaving plenty of slack, every time I threaded a string through the machine head and wrapped it around with the tuning peg once, the strings all sounded very tight -- like they might snap at any moment. I actually snapped by high E after barely getting it above the correct pitch. So now I've got a 5-string guitar and they all look pretty unstable and I'm getting a little buzz when I play on the 12 fret of the B and G strings... can someone tell me what may be wrong anatomy-wise with my guitar? Thanks.
Check that you've got the ball-end tight and the string is completely in firmly. And more trouble, take it to a good repair shop, they'll help you out.
Been playing over 20 years. Just changed my first set of strings ever after watching this. I've tried I bet a hundred times and always broke a string in the process. Not anymore!
Remember guys to wait a while to tune your strings after you change them, they can sometimes need time to stretch out after being loose for so long, I snapped my high e string trying to tune it immediately after
It can vary based on the guitar but we'd recommend at least 3-4 clean wraps for an unwound string. That amounts to about 2-3" of slack. You can use the space between your high E and G string tuners as reference. Thanks!
Whenever i try to manually wrap the slacked end around the peg the ball end on the opposite end of the guitar catches and i dont have enough room to wrap around. I give myseld more slack and the same thing happens???
On a Strat or a Tele I would cut off almost no string at all on the top strings so that the strings go down from nut to string tree and down again from string tree to tuner. Extra winds on a post are less 'sticky' I've found, than a butterfly tree
It was really hard for me to wrap the steing around the post and they ended up not completely snug around the post. They kept bouncing off before i could start tigheting them. Any advice?
Another good thing about cutting the old strings prior to removing them, is you won't get them mixed up with the new ones, in case you unpack everything at once :D
I need the tabs to that amazing solo, you've guys posted these vids with the craziest solos at the end and i just need to learn em. I'm a beginner so how long would it take me to learn em?
Thank you for an extremely well explained video. I have just bought a Hofner Contemporary Bass. Should I use the same method on my Bass guitar? Thank You
I know how to change strings....I've known for years since I been playing but I'm just trying to see which locking method is best. So far I've used this locking method and I haven't tried the around-under-and over method in years. Anyone who's done both recently wanna share their favorite method and why it's better for less paul style guitars perhaps?
what does it mean when the strings are plucky? and not tune? i put new strings on my guitar and the thin strings dont play, just sound plucky. any ideas why? have i put them on wrong or stings are faulty?
listening to this without watching gives me 'patrick bateman explaining which huey lewis and the news albums were genius' vibes.. in a (clinically) good way lol also thank you, super helpful video. gotta relearn everything after 15 years cuz i usually play acoustic electric
Finally a video which gives a method for enough slack all videos just say “get as much as u need” and how am I supposed to know that 😂
Right? Doesn't matter how little or much slack I leave I still end up with 10 wraps around each tuner peg 🤣
The worst part is some don’t tell you how to properly install the string into the knobs and his method with turning the string. I broke 2 strings already because of that. This is my first time changing strings and believe me I was dreading for this day.

I did this method and ended up with loads of winds around the tuner
I've played guitar for literally decades and still dread changing my strings. Great instructions, best video I've seen, best it's ever gone for me.
I hate it. All this fiddling. Ever tried smoking a J before? It makes you actually enjoy changing your strings.
The restringing part was a game changer for me. Successfully changed my strings on the first try. Can't thank you enough for making this video man.
Your method of wrapping the string back around the post before turning the tuner is excellent and appreciated! Thanks!

God damn finally a good technique for giving slack that’s not just “Give it as much as you need”
Clearest lesson I’ve found, with perfect close ups.
Great guide...just restrung two guitars following this and it went flawlessly. Great advice on the slack.
On Stratocasters and guitars with floating bridges, I prefer to put the strings on one at a time and bring each string to close to tune. This keeps the bridge tension in the same relative position. Excellent point!
1:49 Perfect view. Was struggling with this bit. Thank you!
I personally skip the first step because I like risking my eyes.
Thanks for the video, it's very useful as I have only restrung guitars with locking tuners up until now. I'm having the same problem.
After you wrap it, keep hold of the string and keep tension, then with the other hand bend the excess up and then wind with that hand, the whole time keep tension on the string with the hand you wrapped with.
Yes after you wrap it over pull it tight and then use your index finger to hold the string down then start winding.
IM HAVING IT TOO
I just tried this method for the first time today, I find it way easier to just pull the string through, pull it back a bit, pinch it, and wind it, it looks way better
One of the best videos out there! Really easily explained and I strung my guitar in no time! Thanks for putting out there.

Just restrung my guitar for the first time ever with no issues in less than half an hour, great video thanks for this!
Okay, these are actually helpful.
Highly underrated technique here.
THIS IS AWESOME TY
1:50 Just a note for this part don't be afraid to pull the string a little bit it gonna be scary but it worked
1:36 Best bit of info right here.
Noice
And 2:36 too
how do you know how much string to leave on the neck of the guitar before doing this?
@@Ok-kk1nx What do you mean "on the neck"?
@@INeverWanted2010 sorry im new to guitar and never opened up a new pack of strings, but i meant how much string to leave through the pickups?
Great video. Used this technique and changing the strings just flew. I found it way easier and faster. I always had trouble with the thinner strings but doing it this way I had no trouble at all.
I finally found a video that really taught me how to restring properly my guitar. Thx a lot!!!
The best restringing video on The Toob.
I've seen countless ways of restringing guitars and this is my favorite.
Didn't know Starlord was a guitar technician
😂
Underrated comment
BAHAHA
Hah I was thinking more like the main guy in the Limitless series. Jake McDorman.
Yeah, this is the best restring video on UA-cam. Perfectly done. Thank you man.
i found myself needing slightly more slack than this to get it wrapped around, but i followed this for my telecaster & it looks great! no problems
i finally changed strings for the first time ever. hadnt changed strings for over a year. took a bit of trial and failure but when i first got it i was very good
Thanks, I’ve been rocking vintage tuners and came to a dark realization when restringing on a new guitar with modern tuners.
This is the perfect method for getting the string to lock, now my strings look as neat as the day I bought the guitar, thanks.
Excellent and easy. I'm going to string my guitars like this from now on. The part about slack was pretty good.
Great vid - brief, to the point. Hate to admit I took a break from playing long enough I didn't remember exactly how to restring a guitar. Need a refresher so I didn't mess up a string or 6!

Aaron was my go-to guitar tech for a while. Great guy!
based on the fact that I have started the adventure with my electric guitar around 25 years ago, when I was 12-13 years old, I doubt I would be cutting the strings because as a kid, you you would still keep them safe as a "spare ones"

Thanks! It's been over 20 years since I've changed a string and that was an acoustic. I don't recall Ever changing the whole fretboard. So I appreciate the info to make sure it's done right!
Thanks for a great tutorial. I just changed my own strings for the first time
Saving this video for future reference. Thanks 👍
Hands down best channel for guitar maintenance. BUMP
Perfect, just restrung my guitar for the first time and it's good as new. Thanks for the concise tutorial :)
Great tutorial, really well explained. 😎
I didn't even know about that step with leaving slack and now I broke a brand new e string :/
me too
lol, you'll learn kid
Best video for restringing ever, thank you so much!

thank you, very clear, easy to follow, very informative, your string guide was excellent too, all the very best to you
TYVM! This info saved my 7 strings Ibanez. Cheers!
Followed the steps in this video while re-stringing my electric guitar...Thanks. Liked
Great video! Thanks a lot.
How do you get the right slack for the high e string?
Just give it around the same amount of slack as the other strings..?
I re-strung my old electric for the first time in years. Despite leaving plenty of slack, every time I threaded a string through the machine head and wrapped it around with the tuning peg once, the strings all sounded very tight -- like they might snap at any moment. the neck is probably crooked/bowed...an expensive repair ... your room is not humidified enough
Honestly like this method a lot more then all the other methods
Thats what I call clear & concise-thanks
Been playing over 20 years. Just changed my first set of strings ever after watching this. I've tried I bet a hundred times and always broke a string in the process. Not anymore!
Way to go!
Remember guys to wait a while to tune your strings after you change them, they can sometimes need time to stretch out after being loose for so long, I snapped my high e string trying to tune it immediately after
ok, it appears simple enough but how do you do it if you don't own the expensive tools, such as the guitar?
Thankyou... very detailed and well explained
Really helpful, thanks for sharing!
Really great video. Thanks for putting this one together.
Perfect. Thank you
Thank you so much I understand the proper way to replace strings now
I did fine with exception of the A string. I had way too much slack somehow on that string. It’s has like 10 wraps
What about high e string how much slack should i give?
It can vary based on the guitar but we'd recommend at least 3-4 clean wraps for an unwound string. That amounts to about 2-3" of slack. You can use the space between your high E and G string tuners as reference. Thanks!
@@stewmac thanks mate.
As I was watching this, my high ‘E’ string blew like a landmine😂. Guess it’s back to the store for me.
Okay, what happens if the bridge is too high up after I get the guitar in tune?
you'll get out of tune easily. thats why i always hold the bridge while putting the strings on each tuning peg so the bridge doesn't go up
This series is awesome.
Flawless explanation, thank you!!!
Thank you for an amazing video. Helped me alot. What typ of locking tuners is your favorite to use?
Whenever i try to manually wrap the slacked end around the peg the ball end on the opposite end of the guitar catches and i dont have enough room to wrap around. I give myseld more slack and the same thing happens???
On gibson styled heads with three tuning pegs each side how do you work out the exact slack for the D and G Strings
Thank you soooo much it’s soo easy to understand from this vid 🙌
Gave 1 tuner width of slack and it’s not enough to wrap the string back under the folded string 😢
On a Strat or a Tele I would cut off almost no string at all on the top strings so that the strings go down from nut to string tree and down again from string tree to tuner. Extra winds on a post are less 'sticky' I've found, than a butterfly tree

high E and low E

That was a gr8 video but can you please make a video for restringing a yamaha pacifica 012 .........
what does it mean when the strings are plucky? and not tune? i put new strings on my guitar and the thin strings dont play, just sound plucky. any ideas why? have i put them on wrong or stings are faulty?
nice technique
if you do it this way will it cause the neck relief / tension need to be re adjusted?
How much do i need to detune so that the slack go through? I don't know how it works 🙂
Thanks for making this video. This video has the clearest explanations for multiple different types electric guitars.
