He means that you don't want to wind the "tuning machine" towards the body of the guitar. Wind it the other way, just the way that he doing. If you look carefully at his hand, you'll see which way he's turning it.
From the hole in the post, each wind should be below the next so that you don't have string above the hole. Start at the hole and make each wind a little closer to the headstock.
I have always done it the way shown in this video, but I have recently seen people suggesting a better way would be to make a loop to secure the string to itself around the post. It's supposed to keep it more secure, and make it less likely to come out of tune
Great video - it’s not that I haven’t changed guitar strings countless times before, but having locking tuners most of my playing career has made things easy. Now that I finally got around to changing the strings on my acoustic with non-locking tuners, I had to turn to the internet for guidance. This was a big help - thank you!

So glad I found this video. Just bought a used guitar that I want to clean without replacing the strings because they're still good, but every other video has mentioned clipping the old strings so they come off easier, but I just needed this video, told me how to unstring and restring without having to cut anything. Thank you sooo much.
Gabrielle Lee Jarrett you know you really shouldn't take all of the strings off together? A guitar is balanced to keep tension with pitch tuned strings in place. Therefore, only remove/replace one string at a time to keep your guitar healthy 🤘🏻
Something that may be worth looking into is a set of locking tuners. Just stick the string in, and screw the knob tight and you're done. Ive actually forgotten how to string standards at this point, since i've become so spoiled.
I watched this because I could never wind the string round the machine heads very well, and I tried to restring my electric a few days before I watched this, I tried winding the string round the machine head by hand, as soon as i get my new chrome bridge pins for my acoustic because one of the regular ones snapped in the bridge when i intended to change the strings on that (which you can get out by putting your hand in the sound hole, feeling around the bridge for the pin then when you have found it push it up and it'll just pop out) I will try the method he has shown for my acoustic in the wrapping around the machine heads. Also he says about leaving some string because that's what wraps around the machine head, if you don't know how much to leave put your little finger up to your finger near the thumb facing upwards, rest the new string on that then pull it through the machine head and that is a good amount of string to leave to wrap around the machine head. One last thing is that I've seen a comment saying getting the string off the way he had done damages the finish, i don't know if that is true but if you're scared that it is then another way to get them off is to loosen the string so it has no note to it anymore, and is considerably loose, then cut the string with your tool to cut strings at the twelfth fret, then getting the string out from both ends, some guitars have the string come out the bottom of the guitar like mine, or through the bridge. I'm not sure on this because it is an assumption but I've saw that people have not known how to get the string out the bottom end, if the strings do not come out either ways i have mentioned then there will probably be a part off the bottom to unscrew around the bridge area, or a back off the bridge to unscrew but make sure if you unscrew near the bridge that you don't adjust the bridge height. This is as far as i know as i am only a 15 year old guitarist. A few days ago when I was changing the strings on my electric i made a mistake on the low E string and tuned it an octave too high and it snapped meaning i had to buy a new string, so be careful of that. I used Ernie ball, gauge nines which are perfectly good strings so if strings have snapped you just need practice. Incase your a beginning guitarist and don't know what machine heads are they are also called pegs; the part of the guitar the strings are wound through. Hope this helps some people
I don't know if anybody else mentioned it, but a general rule of thumb for how much slack you would need is you would measure to the next tuning peg. that should be enough to make enough revolutions around the head of the peg that you're running the string through to not have too much wrapped around the peg (which looks hideous 🤣) or too little to keep it tightly wound.
THANK YOU SO MUCH! I was so done with going to my local guitar center and spending 50 dollars to getting it restrung AND having to wait 4-5 days for them to finish I only needed to restring my high E and it’s not the prettiest where the knob is but it gets the sound I want and need so works for me😂 THANK YOU!
I haven't strung up a guitar in years and used this video to re-learn it. I found I was using way too may wraps. A person commented that a good way to measure how much string is to use the distance to the next tuner. That gave me almost exactly 3 wraps on each string. Thanks for the video. What would we do without these teachers?
yesterday i bought a new set of strings. then i eagerly replaced my old strings with the new one. but i was ignorant and thought i could do this with my own. so the 6th string snapped and i bought another one today. now i'm watching this very helpful video. I learned my lesson!
Best instructional video. I'm no pro but have had a guitar for a few years. Whenever I need to change strings I come back here to make sure I do it right. I don't play much but my strings last me around a year.
Maybe a good tip for beginners aswel is that you'll have to do it one by one! If you just cut through your strings or loosen all of them up too fast the pressure change will be high and not good for your guitar.
Only issue I have is which way to wind the string, I think you go above the original positioning then every one after that goes under the original positioning and he even says that, but in the video continues winding above. Any help?
I've never restrung my Electric guitar I've always taken it and had someone else who knows how to do it put new strings onto my guitar this is very helpful
dammit i didn't have one of those wire cutters so i just grabbed any scrissors i could find around the house. now all the scissors we have a visible chip in their blades lol. and that tiny first string is still intact. guitar strings are surprisingly tough!
Really helped. Also one tip, instead of using wire cutters, if you pull the excess string around, you create friction and heat so the end will come off. This leaves a clean end of the string on the post, without any sharp edges. It works on the 3 thicker strings at least for me :)
I see on some videos that the individual wound the tuning heads in a clockwise manner and some do it counter-clockwise. Does it matter which direction this is done or not?
Had to re-string my guitar for the first time. Great video with really easy to follow idiot-proof instructions. Thanks from a technical idiot in the UK.
What you are calling the 'bridge' is not the bridge, it's the 'stop-tailpiece; it's job is to anchor the strings. The 'bridge' supports the the string-saddles, and it's the item closest to the Pickup!
8233Eire This is somewhat true, for the style of guitar he happens to be demonstrating on. Other brands have all of the parts you mentioned incorporated into one unit.

This comment is for a technical communication course I am currently taking. This comment is purely for educational reasons. I do not expect nor need a reply or fix from this. April 1, 2021 UA-cam user “fordummies” Dear fordummies, Your video on how to restring an electric guitar was very informative and easy to follow along with. Since learning to play guitar, I have had some rather annoying times with switching old strings out for new ones, especially with my electric guitar. Your guide to doing that made it much simpler to follow along with and properly restring my guitars with ease. There were, however, a few notes I had for your video throughout my viewing of it, which I have separated into sections below for you. Content As far as the overall content of the video, I found it to be very informative, although a use of jargon was in your video quite a noticeable amount throughout the entirety of the video, such as the use of the term "post" when referring to the part of the guitar that the bare end of the string slides through to begin tuning. If you have less-informed viewers watching this video, they might be confused when you mention the post, so a quick point-out or explanation of what you're referring to could be much more useful to your less knowledgeable viewers. Also, I noticed a few instances where the camera zoomed in too far when you were showing certain parts, such as when you brought the string through the post and explained to leave a bit of slack for the string, it was hard to get a good view of about how much slack should be left on the string before you begin to tighten it through the post. I would suggest have the camera not be zoomed in so much so viewers can see better what is going on behind your hands with the string: about how much slack you’re leaving and where you’re putting tension on the string while tightening it through the post. This would make it easier for users to get a good idea of how much slack they should leave while restringing their own guitar so they don’t pull it too tight or too loose. Organization The overall organization of the video was very well choreographed, yet I can’t help but feel like a minor step that could be rather important is missing. This step would be the very first thing you go over when bringing out the new string to replace the old one: how to properly unwind a guitar string to not form any bends or kinks in the string to get the right tone and tightness when tuning. Many a times have I brought a new string out of the package and tried to unwind it by hand, only to get it even more coiled up or cause a slight bend in the string that’s very noticeable when trying to play. My suggestion would be to show a step before pulling the string through the bridge of you unwinding the string the proper way: by grabbing the bare end and letting gravity take care of pulling everything apart in a seamless effort. This way, viewers can be sure not to form any kinks in the string, and it keeps with the overall organization of the paper, following the same chronological order you have laid out in your video of how to restring an electric guitar. Style I believe the overall style of the video was very straightforward and easy to follow along with. My biggest suggestion would be to make sure you aren’t using too many terms that not all viewers would understand as to avoid a sense of being lost or confused. This way, viewers of all ages and experience levels could follow along with ease and have a better time when it comes to needing to change their own guitar strings. Delivery Personally, I felt as though your delivery of the entire set of instructions was great, the biggest flaw I noticed throughout was mainly just the lighting of the room you were changing the strings in. The room was well-lit, a little too well-lit, and there were times when you would be zoomed in on the guitar super close or panned out and it was hard to tell what you were putting tension on, what you meant by “windings” as not many people who are new to guitar playing would completely understand right away. My suggestion would be to film in a smaller room with a dimmer light setting in order to be able to fully capture every twist, pull, and turn you make when restringing the guitar so that all of your viewers would be able to see exactly what is taking place.
I can never get the string wound around the post enough before the string starts to tighten too much, it barley goes around once, what am I doing wrong?
He doesn't explain that you gotta leave a lot of slack when you first start threading it round the peg because I think I just ruined mine by only rapping around once :/
You mean you weren't listening. And what does it matter that it was months ago. It still happened. It's three years ago now. I hope you still think about this moment. The moment you didn't fucking listen.
Bung The Booce There's TONS of videos on how to change strings for Fenders, its the same process just few changes because the design and body isnt the same.
i would just like to say in my own opinion: you shouldnt add "dummies" to the name. i know its giving a meaning as in for people who dont understand but its still not right. Nobody is dumb and nobody is smart, stop labeling people as for instence if someone called you stupid you would be a little upset but if someone called you smart you would be proud. Is smart the #1 label you wanna go by? I think not. As I should say again, This is MY OWN opinion.
its just a slogan that was used to make how to's really marketable, which as you can see succeeded in them gaining those views, i kno it sux tho, thts business
Here's the thing Bear, The term "for dummies" is associated with those yellow books. It's been around for so long, that using it lets people know exactly what kind of video they are gonna find. Even beginner videos might assume you know the basic things. "For dummies" means it is the most basic, beginner video possible. I'm not sure why you would come here just to find something that offends you.
@Disock It sounds like you've got a Fender strat or something of that nature.. If so the white cover normally doesn't need to come off. Just insert the strings through the holes from the back of the guitar (there should be an opening at the bottom of the white cover) and you pretty much follow the same process as in the video.
i wanted to add that when you get to the G-B-E on the gibson style headstock you need to loop the string under to the left. i just watched a video and the thick strings E A D you bend and loop to the right...GBE loop to left i hope this helps any confusion ive read here about guys breaking strings.this is a great video but the gentleman gives the impression that every loop & bend is to the right..only on fender style headstocks are the bend/loops all to the right.
@Stroija It can happen if you don't tie it up properly. It will basically untie itself (hence the tone goes down even though you're winding up) Also new strings do that a lot until they get used to the tension. I like to let my strings rest when I put them on and then slowly break them in by gently playing them a few hours later.
Very simple and easy way. Many thanks!!!! Can anyone tell me why my 5th & 6th strings are too short for electric guitar. It does not reach tuning posts. I have 24 frets guitar. Many thanks in advance.

What does he mean by "you want each new wind to wind downward toward the head stack rather than upwards"? 2:04
He means that you don't want to wind the "tuning machine" towards the body of the guitar. Wind it the other way, just the way that he doing. If you look carefully at his hand, you'll see which way he's turning it.
He actually means each following string winds should be underneath each other I think
From the hole in the post, each wind should be below the next so that you don't have string above the hole. Start at the hole and make each wind a little closer to the headstock.
The best explanation is always turn the strings away from you.

Gabrielle Lee Jarrett you know you really shouldn't take all of the strings off together? A guitar is balanced to keep tension with pitch tuned strings in place. Therefore, only remove/replace one string at a time to keep your guitar healthy 🤘🏻
Christ, I've watched about every video on changing strings and still can barely string my guitar, i have zero clue why i struggle with it so much.
Something that may be worth looking into is a set of locking tuners. Just stick the string in, and screw the knob tight and you're done. Ive actually forgotten how to string standards at this point, since i've become so spoiled.
Pray to Christ to help you before you attempt stringing it😁
Do be so hard on yourself and ask somebody to do it for you
@Arthur Morgan, Formerly 4th Chairman what video did you watch?
@Arthur Morgan, Formerly 4th Chairman alright still thanks
Hope this helps some people
Stuart Terry war & peace man🤘🏻
I don't know if anybody else mentioned it, but a general rule of thumb for how much slack you would need is you would measure to the next tuning peg. that should be enough to make enough revolutions around the head of the peg that you're running the string through to not have too much wrapped around the peg (which looks hideous 🤣) or too little to keep it tightly wound.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!
I was so done with going to my local guitar center and spending 50 dollars to getting it restrung AND having to wait 4-5 days for them to finish
I only needed to restring my high E and it’s not the prettiest where the knob is but it gets the sound I want and need so works for me😂
THANK YOU!
never stringed a guitar before it helped, thanks
I haven't strung up a guitar in years and used this video to re-learn it. I found I was using way too may wraps. A person commented that a good way to measure how much string is to use the distance to the next tuner. That gave me almost exactly 3 wraps on each string. Thanks for the video. What would we do without these teachers?
Thank you so much! My friend showed me this. Now I dont have to go to the guitar center every time just to get it restrung!
yesterday i bought a new set of strings. then i eagerly replaced my old strings with the new one. but i was ignorant and thought i could do this with my own. so the 6th string snapped and i bought another one today. now i'm watching this very helpful video. I learned my lesson!
If you stop at 0:25 you figured out how to be a djent guitarist.
What?
Alex R. What?
TDG GAMING uhhhhh..... how does that have anything to do with djent? He's taking the string off of the peg...
+Alex R. do you even know what a djent is
+TDG GAMING Lol
Best instructional video. I'm no pro but have had a guitar for a few years. Whenever I need to change strings I come back here to make sure I do it right. I don't play much but my strings last me around a year.
Maybe a good tip for beginners aswel is that you'll have to do it one by one! If you just cut through your strings or loosen all of them up too fast the pressure change will be high and not good for your guitar.
Great vid! Much thanks!
Side note(no pun intended): A simple video like this goes a long way, even 14 years later.
Only issue I have is which way to wind the string, I think you go above the original positioning then every one after that goes under the original positioning and he even says that, but in the video continues winding above. Any help?
That is the way I was taught to do it over fifty years ago and it does help to prevent slippage if you get that one overlapped wrap.
The high E string?
Nickel is a tough ass metal.
Lol
i used pliers lmao
That tiny first string is called the high e string.
Really helped. Also one tip, instead of using wire cutters, if you pull the excess string around, you create friction and heat so the end will come off. This leaves a clean end of the string on the post, without any sharp edges. It works on the 3 thicker strings at least for me :)
Such a great tip ! I used it and it worked thanks !

Perfect video this guy waists no time and is very clear with instructions thank you so much
I see on some videos that the individual wound the tuning heads in a clockwise manner and some do it counter-clockwise. Does it matter which direction this is done or not?
Had to re-string my guitar for the first time. Great video with really easy to follow idiot-proof instructions. Thanks from a technical idiot in the UK.
now you have a friend in the diamond company
+asha lloyd Business*
Shane company right? lol
I miss the credit man...... Somthin' Somthin' from the diamond center.
Thank you. I knew he sounded like someone I've heard before! The Shane Co. Is this a national thing or just the Denver area?
@@mindless__impulses9672 hHAHAHAHAHA best comment ive seen in a while.
You, sir, are the only guy who has managed to teach me how to put on a string!
tfw for dummies' restringing guide is better than fender's one
What you are calling the 'bridge' is not the bridge, it's the 'stop-tailpiece; it's job is to anchor the strings. The 'bridge' supports the the string-saddles, and it's the item closest to the Pickup!
8233Eire This is somewhat true, for the style of guitar he happens to be demonstrating on. Other brands have all of the parts you mentioned incorporated into one unit.
Shut up
BIGDICKBOOTYEATER Umad?
Best video for re stringing a guitar. You saved me some cash. Thank you
Instructions not clear enough, I set my community pool on fire. It's just a big hot tub now.
thanks man! i was concerned with the length of the video but you actually got straight to the point without unnecessary talk. i like that XD
you know how youtube started putting "recommended for you" videos on the right side? "how to string an electric guitar for dummies" - "recommended for you"
I got pwned by youtube
thanks for posting this video. i recently broke my high E string and was able to get it nice and tight with about 3 and a half winds around the post after watching how you guide each wrap downwards with your finger. now i can go back to jamming out :)
This was SO easy to follow. Very helpful, thank you! 🙌🙌🙌
13 years later, still a great video.
now you have a friend in the diamond business. lol
read this in his voice. sounds the exact same
Yo dont know if you will see this but thank you so much I watched many other videos and one from a good brand and I broke a string withing 60 seconds of this video I changed 2 strings thank you so much man this was really helpful
He says it should be wrapped around two to three times, so I kept tightening, and snap! Just broke my replacement string. Not sure if it was something I did wrong, but viewers beware.
...........
I.....feel.........sorry....for you, DUMMY.
You didn't have enough slack in the string before you began tightening.
This helped me a LOT not gonna lie... I usually have to tie the string before tuning it on the post But this guy made it a LOT better for me o_o
Okay, still out of my league
my guitar is so old that to get the strings out, you have to dismantle it untill it looks like car parts.
Finn Beatty what kind of guitar is it?
+Jeff clarke it's a huffy
This comment is for a technical communication course I am currently taking. This comment is purely for educational reasons. I do not expect nor need a reply or fix from this.

UA-cam user “fordummies”
Dear fordummies,
Your video on how to restring an electric guitar was very informative and easy to follow along with.
Content
As far as the overall content of the video, I found it to be very informative, although a use of jargon was in your video quite a noticeable amount throughout the entirety of the video, such as the use of the term "post" when referring to the part of the guitar that the bare end of the string slides through to begin tuning.
Organization
The overall organization of the video was very well choreographed, yet I can’t help but feel like a minor step that could be rather important is missing.
Style
I believe the overall style of the video was very straightforward and easy to follow along with. My biggest suggestion would be to make sure you aren’t using too many terms that not all viewers would understand as to avoid a sense of being lost or confused. This way, viewers of all ages and experience levels could follow along with ease and have a better time when it comes to needing to change their own guitar strings.
Delivery
Personally, I felt as though your delivery of the entire set of instructions was great, the biggest flaw I noticed throughout was mainly just the lighting of the room you were changing the strings in.
Really helped.
I've been playing for a year, but I still need to watch videos like these
I don't really like changing my guitar strings
You really should
Arthur Morgan, Formerly 4th Chairman Change his strings 😕
You know...this is the best tutorial i could ever find..really good tutorial man..
why didn't I just watch the 4 minute video before destroying my only strings
It really does suck just how quickly you can absolutely destroy these strings
Thank you you were the best lesson I could find.No one described how to put the string on like you.You had the best video
Do not turn the "B" string too many times. The string will break and you will have to get more strings. I am speaking from experience
2
Feisal Merali Give it a little bit more slack next time.
Or the e trust
I can never get the string wound around the post enough before the string starts to tighten too much, it barley goes around once, what am I doing wrong?
Shit..intructions not clear. Ended up outside in a unicorn costume chasing rabits around.
Cool vid can you recommend size string on les Paul guitar 🎸 for beginners thanks
Broke a string. Thanks
NOOTH COMEDY not his fault. You broke the string, not him.
thank you so much! the technique of wrapping the end of the string around the tuning machine is perfect
Instruction not clear. I broke my G string.
then you tightend to hard he os very clear
i broke ur G string ;P ...
+Ischyros Ford ill stop...
+Angry Princess Haha, I was literally just about to make that same joke.
Why when I string it the nostes from the 1.2.3 till 12 dont sound good . i do it like in the tutorial and I always get it wrong
AGH thank god new strings only cost $5
$10 at a local store.
Been watching this as reference for years. Love it. Thank you!
He doesn't explain that you gotta leave a lot of slack when you first start threading it round the peg because I think I just ruined mine by only rapping around once :/
Yes he did!
Well i didnt get that impression initially. anyway that was months ago
You sir, are a mouth breather
You mean you weren't listening. And what does it matter that it was months ago. It still happened. It's three years ago now. I hope you still think about this moment. The moment you didn't fucking listen.
Best restring tutorial I have seen....thank you!
I broke my strings 🤡
Same 🤗
I've been putting my strings on upside down for years. Thank goodness I discovered this video !!
Lol
Goddamn it but thats a Gibson not a Fender!
Nope. Not even a Gibson. That's called an LTD guitar.
Greg Krist Sure looked like one, but that isn't my problem, more that I have a Fender which renders this tutorial useless.
Bung The Booce Not really, still the same process it just that the key you wrap the string around is in a different spot.www
Bill cronel I really need to know how to change my strings. I've been asking my uncle for months on end each time they break.
Bung The Booce There's TONS of videos on how to change strings for Fenders, its the same process just few changes because the design and body isnt the same.
Seriously, there's a special place in heaven for people who make instructional videos and upload them to UA-cam
"Tuning machine"
Excellent video, for beginners who just want it explained in a simple fashion!
i would just like to say in my own opinion: you shouldnt add "dummies" to the name. i know its giving a meaning as in for people who dont understand but its still not right.
GiovannaxBear "Nobody is dumb and nobody is smart" may well be the dumbest thing I've ever read.
You should read a book called "How to not be a profesional victim for dummies"
@2:31 so it djents?
@Disock It sounds like you've got a Fender strat or something of that nature.. If so the white cover normally doesn't need to come off. Just insert the strings through the holes from the back of the guitar (there should be an opening at the bottom of the white cover) and you pretty much follow the same process as in the video.
i wanted to add that when you get to the G-B-E on the gibson style headstock you need to loop the string under to the left. i just watched a video and the thick strings E A D you bend and loop to the right...GBE loop to left i hope this helps any confusion ive read here about guys breaking strings.this is a great video but the gentleman gives the impression that every loop & bend is to the right..only on fender style headstocks are the bend/loops all to the right.
just restringed my strat for the first time today, all by myself and thanks to this vid :)
@Stroija It can happen if you don't tie it up properly. It will basically untie itself (hence the tone goes down even though you're winding up)
Also new strings do that a lot until they get used to the tension. I like to let my strings rest when I put them on and then slowly break them in by gently playing them a few hours later.
Very simple and easy way. Many thanks!!!!
Can anyone tell me why my 5th & 6th strings are too short for
electric guitar. It does not reach tuning posts. I have 24 frets guitar. Many thanks in
advance.
